Jeez! I've been in school for 16 years of my life, and I still have trouble using commas. Thanks for the great material; it really helped!
You need to place a comma after the word life, because it expresses a complete thought. I think....
@@brianblackburn-author7531 ahaha.. well done, sir!
@@brianblackburn-author7531 After the word life, there's no need for the comma.
Comma after life, period after comma and capitalize thanks.

Got hearted, so for anyone interested I passed CAE with 203 points out of 210, meaning that I have a C2 Certificate (Basically, if you pass CAE with at least 200/210, your certificate is marked at C2 level insted of C1)

Thank u Ms Sparkle, u teach so much better than my high school English teachers ever could... I'd like grammar lessons
Thank you so much it was very easy to understand .When I have a writing assignment I usually have a hard time where to put the commas .
You should have used a comma “ Thank you so much it was easy to understand. When I have a writing assignment, I usually have a hard time where to put the commas”
I just love you guys correct each other lol
@@Happypotato917 Your suggestion is optional. "When I have a writing assignment I usually have a hard time where to put the comma." - this sentence is perfectly OK. Your suggestion and what she wrote have slightly different implications. However, Zhian Johnson made an accurate correction: "Thank you so much, it was easy to understand." You missed a comma.
I have the exact same problem with my writing
I was never taught this in school, and now I understand it. Thank you, so much!
It has been 30 + years since I was last in school. I'm taking a basic English class to get back on track. Your videos have helped immensely so far! I realized how lazy I have become about formal writing. Your videos are so easy to follow and the practice really helps. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Juli! I appreciate the kind words.
Hi. I usually struggle with grammar and punctuation as a fluent English speaker. This video has given me clarity and the confidence to be able to apply the rules. It has also given me hope to retake the transcription test. Thank you :)
That makes me so happy to hear! I wish you all the best of luck on the transcription test when you take it again!
Hey, I'm also here because a transcription test at GoTranscript.
Are you here for the same reason?
I am going back to night classes, and I am 53 years old. I had to leave school at the 5th grade, and tonight the reading and writing class, I had tonight has assignments, where do we use commas, and I had a problem figuring out where to put commas. When i saw your video I learned more from you, then I did in the 6 weeks I had my classes. I got them all right, because you explained it very well where I can understand what goes where. Thank you for taking the time to do this video. It has really helped me understand what I need to do. God bless your heart.
Thank you so much for your kind words! You should be so proud of yourself going back to school! ❤️
I’m an ex-English teacher, and I love watching your programs. I got mixed up on the use of the comma with quotation marks. I read a lot of British novels and non-fiction, and I’m used to seeing the British rule apply. I had begun to write following the British rule for quotations!! Also, thanks for explaining the Oxford comma. I use it, as I believe it often clarifies items in sentences. Thanks for your great work!
You are welcome! Thank you for your lovely comments. I'm planning on doing a video on American VS English punctuation soon because I get a lot of comments about the differences between North America and the UK. (This is made even trickier because here in Canada, we use a mixture of both!)
Thanks Sparkle English for explaining punctuation marks perfectly! I have been struggling but you have built my confidence in writing .
Such a great teacher you are😊, You give me confidence to try the transcription test on the platforms you suggested, it has been so long in writing English which is not my first language, but I love it, and I just like to polish my writing skills and be confident again after a long period of being numb due to depression, it is interesting to motivate myself through your lessons 😊.
Thank you so much for this video 🙏 I just couldn't find any other info on the internet that explained the clauses as well as you did in this video. What a great lesson on how to use commas! Very easy to understand.
You're so welcome! Thank you for your kind words and support!

The series of videos about the punctuation marks, especially the use of commas, are very informative and easy to learn. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thank you so much for clarifying the eight comma rules. I’ve always been unsure at times in regards to this particular punctuation. I wrote down the comma rules so I’ll never forget.
Dear Ms Sparkle, this helped me so much. I am trying to improve my English writting, and I am not a native English speaker. We weren't taught about commas in school yet, but I really needed to know how to use it. Thank you for easy explanation and clear speaking.
I'm still having issues with understanding the use of commas with an independent clause + dependent clause, but this helped clarify things more. Thanks!
I did learn a couple of things. My high school English teacher told us that she was not happy that they had made her teach. She had been the librarian. She wasn’t in it if you understand what I mean. I have wanted to understand English since learning Spanish. Thank you for your easy to understand help.
Hi Maria, thank you for the tutorial. My accuracy was surprisingly correct. I look forward to your next lessons you offer to aid my skills and improve my writing abilities in the future.
Thank you for this :)
From grade school to university, the English language is part of our major subjects, but until now I still get confused with the use of comma, colon and semicolon and also subject-verb agreement 😅
The clearest explanation that I've found so far. Thanks a lot!
Love these refresher classes in prep for transcription exams.. (spotting the style guide preferences and how their different from generalised writing became way easier)
I couldn't find a basic grammar video anywhere else online. You do a great job of explaining the comma rules. I needed a refresher like this and your voice is pleasant to listen to. Thank you!
Thank you. It was a very easy-to-understand, methodical, and consistent approach.
I’m using your videos in conjunction with a proofreading course I am taking, and they are so helpful. Sometimes you just have to hear it out loud. Thank you, thank you.

Thank you for your video! It really helped me to prepare for my HESI entrance exam for nursing school. All 8 points were a great refresher and each point was very informative with complete explanations. Thank you for all your examples too, they were all very helpful.

Great video that explains each and every details in,a simple and easy manner.
I wouldn't know how useful only 17 minutes video was until I watched it I was so happy with what I learned 🎉
Thanks so much! I have been trying to learn commas to help my grammar. This sentence is most likely incorrect, since I’m still trying to learn how to use commas correctly. your video did help me understand commas better, but I’m still gonna try to practice. Thanks again!
I did very well, thank you. All in all, the video was easy for me. The part I had the most trouble with was the FANBOYS. Fortunately, I got all of the practice sentences correct. The most difficult things when I learn English are vocab and grammar. Thank you for your good work, Sparkle! Keep it up!
The class was easy to understand. thank you!
Great content! Clear, concise and, most importantly, simple looking visuals. As for improvements, it would be good to have the practice examples include some of the mentioned exceptions to the rule.
This is awesome! Thank you so much for covering all punctuation rules so well
Love this! Just what I was looking for. I did pretty well with the exercises after you're explanation of the rule. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for this video. I was really struggling with using punctuations a few weeks ago and i began to read my high school English books and it really helped me improve my use of punctuations. This video is also helpful and very informative. Right now, I'm working on improving my use of semicolons and colons along with the other punctuations like em and en dashes. There's one thing that you haven't really covered with the use of commas but similar to addressing someone. It's calling out with their name. Example would be: John, where are you?..A few weeks ago I was also struggling to place certain punctuations on sentences. One example is: Hey, thanks for the donuts, pal. I didn't know at first that there should be a comma before the word pal but then I realized that I need to. Thanks again for your videos. I'll be watching your other videos as well.
Thank you very much for this helpful tutorial.
I have a question about the coordinating conjunctions. When should I begin a sentence with them? Because I'm having some difficulties and I'm getting confused every time I want to put a comma or a period before them. (For transcription purposes.)
Very well-made videos! I’d be interested in seeing one on the use of commas before vs after parentheses, as well as quotation marks. Also, a video on the use of parentheses and dashes within a sentence. Love your work; you’ve got a new listener 👍
I needed help with Rule #5; even though, I completed English at all four levels at University. This punctuation rule aggravated my writing because I missed it in High School. Thank you for the video. Your presentation is crisp and clear. cr
Wow, how did you teach me more in 15 minutes than I ever learned in school? Great video, you’re an amazing teacher.
Thank you so much, Nate!
Honestly, you made English very easy to learn. By far, this is the best English lesson, I’ve ever had in my entire life. Thank you
You sir, forgot to use an exclamation mark at the end of your sentence; or maybe I'm wrong!😅🤣
Excellent way of teaching.
I have been stuck with these rules before this lecture,in which I got to know many things.Thank you

Thank you so much for making this video! I’m 34 years old, and I’m just now getting my life back on track. I’m a bit rusty, high school wasn’t yesterday after all, but I found your videos to be super helpful, and easy to understand. I still have a ways to go, but I’m feeling more and more confident with each passing day.
I start my college courses soon, wish me luck !🍀
As a teacher of children and adults, I found this very easy. However, I’d have loved my students to watch this whole series as it’s often a better understanding. I can use and explain punctuation, but we weren’t taught why or when we needed punctuation as a child.
I’d get my students to read another person’s paragraph out loud. They’d realise when a pause was required to make it easier for another person to analyse. In Tasmania, Australia, our spelling is different , based on English grammar and spelling. That spelling can certainly make a difference ie ‘favourite’,rather than ‘favorite’ would jump out to me as wrong! At times we focus on the spelling more than the punctuation.
Good lessons thank you, great examples as well! I wish I’d seen these videos 60 years ago! 🙏
That's exactly what I'm searching for! Thank you a lot! I'm going to try myself in transcribing, though I'm not a native English speaker. All your videos are very helpful to me.
Thank you so much, Alina! Your English is excellent so I think you will have a lot of success and it is always great to keep practicing too!

Very helpful and much needed information about the use of commas. Your examples help clarify and make clear when to use commas and when not to. I would like to know what an Oxford comma is and the way it's properly used. (I could look this up -- and have - but it seems not all transcription companies are in agreement. ) When I leave it in, they take it out, and vice-versa. My understanding is that a comma is used in place of the word "and." So when you put it before the last word in a sentence, it's sort of like saying "and " twice. From your experience, is it generally preferred to put the comma in or leave it out? I'm looking forward to more helpful videos!
Hi Sondra! I've never had any bad experience using the Oxford comma or seen anyone get penalized for it. Consistency is definitely key. Let me share an example of how it's important.
Take this sentence, for example. Imagine someone is accepting an award and they say, "I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents, Lady Gaga and Jesus". Now without the comma, it is like the person is saying that their parents ARE Lady Gaga and Jesus.
If we use the Oxford comma it becomes "I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents, Lady Gaga, and Jesus". This way it is more clear that they are three items in a list. There are many examples like this. In terms of transcription, every style guide is different.
I would quickly search for "commas" in the style guide section to see if they have any particular preference regarding this.
Please make more such videos. They are really helpful to understand grammar. Also, congratulations! You earned a subscriber. You're doing a great job helping us with short Grammar lessons ☺️
Thank you! This was very helpful. I look forward to watching more of your videos!
I think you did a very good job braking down every step. I found the examples very helpfull and the practice round was the icing on the cake.
I can't thank you enough.
Can you cover colon and semi-colon? When to properly use them.
I love all your videos, I never pass them up.

Wow, that was pretty clear as explanation. I had some confusion to use this punctuation, but now on I am going to enjoy my writing skill. Thank you very much!!
Thank you for this video!! This truly helps!!!
Thank you so much. I learned a lot 💜
But I just want to ask a question right now.
Is it right to put a period after a quotation mark? Like for example: I said "I want to go home," then she replied, "I don't care!". She's so rude.
So that's the sentence. Is it alright to put a period after the quotation mark or it isn't needed to be there?
And one last thing, it is ok to not capitalize the first letter of the quoted text? Like for example "don't cry." or it must be "Don't cry."
Please help me for this. I'm a bit confused.
Hello.
My take on your first question:
1. I said, "I want to go home." She replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude.
or
2. I said, "I want to go home." Then she replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude.
For your second question, it says we need to capitalise the first word in a sentence that is a direct quote.
When quoting, the first word of a complete sentence should be capitalized, regardless of its placement within the main sentence.
Example: Matthew said, “In that case, I'm going out for a walk!”

To be honest, I like languages that are phonetically consistent. Also, these videos help me a lot with my English. Very quickly though, what is the difference between a comma and a semi-colon?
Yes, there is. A semicolon is used to join 2 sentences that are related. Something like that.
Thank you. I like the way this video is put together for the use of the comma. It would also be nice to know the rules for using hyphens and dashes, just like you did in this video.
That was pretty street forward. It was really easy to absorb information. Thank you very much for your help!
Excellent! Thanks a lot for the lesson.
Jennifer Marie, how do I get better at sentence structure? I work as a transcriptionist, and a lot of times I get markdowns on sentence structure errors. I really don't know how I can improve on this one because I don't totally understand it. Does it have to do with grammar? I feel confident in my work, but this keeps coming up repeatedly. TIA.
You're so welcome! This is a tricky question. When you are transcribing, you can't really control the grammar or the flow since you're typing what someone else is saying. So if someone has poor sentence structure in their speech, that isn't really something you can control. The only thing I believe they may be referring to is how you handle breaking up sentences. If possible, never begin a sentence with a conjunction and try to create as many compound sentences where possible using conjunctions. Also, make sure to avoid run-on sentences. Correct usage of commas is also a part of correct sentence structure. It's difficult to obtain perfect sentence structure when transcribing because you're at the mercy of the speaker who decides the sentence flow! If you try to use commas correctly, and avoid too many sentences that begin with conjunctions, you should be okay.
@@SparkleEnglish You're amazing! I appreciate your reply and explanation. This is really helpful. Have a great weekend.
