This video is also helpful and very informative. Right now, I'm working on improving my use of semicolons and colons along with the other punctuations like em and en dashes. There's one thing that you haven't really covered with the use of commas but similar to addressing someone. It's calling out with their name. Example would be: John, where are you?..A few weeks ago I was also struggling to place certain punctuations on sentences. One example is: Hey, thanks for the donuts, pal. I didn't know at first that there should be a comma before the word pal but then I realized that I need to. Thanks again for your videos. I'll be watching your other videos as well.

    As a teacher of children and adults, I found this very easy. However, I’d have loved my students to watch this whole series as it’s often a better understanding. I can use and explain punctuation, but we weren’t taught why or when we needed punctuation as a child.
    I’d get my students to read another person’s paragraph out loud. They’d realise when a pause was required to make it easier for another person to analyse. In Tasmania, Australia, our spelling is different , based on English grammar and spelling. That spelling can certainly make a difference ie ‘favourite’,rather than ‘favorite’ would jump out to me as wrong! At times we focus on the spelling more than the punctuation.
    Good lessons thank you, great examples as well! I wish I’d seen these videos 60 years ago! 🙏

    Very helpful and much needed information about the use of commas. Your examples help clarify and make clear when to use commas and when not to. I would like to know what an Oxford comma is and the way it's properly used. (I could look this up -- and have - but it seems not all transcription companies are in agreement. ) When I leave it in, they take it out, and vice-versa. My understanding is that a comma is used in place of the word "and." So when you put it before the last word in a sentence, it's sort of like saying "and " twice. From your experience, is it generally preferred to put the comma in or leave it out? I'm looking forward to more helpful videos!

      Hi Sondra! I've never had any bad experience using the Oxford comma or seen anyone get penalized for it. Consistency is definitely key. Let me share an example of how it's important.
      Take this sentence, for example. Imagine someone is accepting an award and they say, "I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents, Lady Gaga and Jesus". Now without the comma, it is like the person is saying that their parents ARE Lady Gaga and Jesus.
      If we use the Oxford comma it becomes "I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents, Lady Gaga, and Jesus". This way it is more clear that they are three items in a list. There are many examples like this. In terms of transcription, every style guide is different.
      I would quickly search for "commas" in the style guide section to see if they have any particular preference regarding this.

    Thank you so much. I learned a lot 💜
    But I just want to ask a question right now.
    Is it right to put a period after a quotation mark? Like for example: I said "I want to go home," then she replied, "I don't care!". She's so rude.
    So that's the sentence. Is it alright to put a period after the quotation mark or it isn't needed to be there?
    And one last thing, it is ok to not capitalize the first letter of the quoted text? Like for example "don't cry." or it must be "Don't cry."
    Please help me for this. I'm a bit confused.

    • @somersethouse5054
      @somersethouse5054 Před 3 lety +1

      Hello.
      My take on your first question:
      1. I said, "I want to go home." She replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude.
      or
      2. I said, "I want to go home." Then she replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude.
      For your second question, it says we need to capitalise the first word in a sentence that is a direct quote.
      When quoting, the first word of a complete sentence should be capitalized, regardless of its placement within the main sentence.
      Example: Matthew said, “In that case, I'm going out for a walk!”

    • @rainy905
      @rainy905 Před 2 lety

      Yes, there is. A semicolon is used to join 2 sentences that are related. Something like that.

    Jennifer Marie, how do I get better at sentence structure? I work as a transcriptionist, and a lot of times I get markdowns on sentence structure errors. I really don't know how I can improve on this one because I don't totally understand it. Does it have to do with grammar? I feel confident in my work, but this keeps coming up repeatedly. TIA.

    • @SparkleEnglish
      @SparkleEnglish  Před 4 lety +3

      You're so welcome! This is a tricky question. When you are transcribing, you can't really control the grammar or the flow since you're typing what someone else is saying. So if someone has poor sentence structure in their speech, that isn't really something you can control. The only thing I believe they may be referring to is how you handle breaking up sentences. If possible, never begin a sentence with a conjunction and try to create as many compound sentences where possible using conjunctions. Also, make sure to avoid run-on sentences. Correct usage of commas is also a part of correct sentence structure. It's difficult to obtain perfect sentence structure when transcribing because you're at the mercy of the speaker who decides the sentence flow! If you try to use commas correctly, and avoid too many sentences that begin with conjunctions, you should be okay.
