    The movie may be a bit dated by modern standards, even a bit corny, but this overture stands among the greatest heroic themes of cinema history. The brass, strings and woodwinds all complement with fugal imitations, playfully handing off melodies to each other. The timbre vascilates between swashbuckling courage and delicate emotion, breathlessly capturing the selfless spirit of the character. Michael Kamen was an underappreciated genius who deserves a place alongside Horner, Mancini, Bernstein, Hermann and Copland in the pantheon of great film composers.

      @imfsresidentotaku9699 Před 2 lety +11

      Calling something "dated" is a detracting and superficial way of pointing out how long ago it was made, a factor which should not be considered an imperfection. Imagine talking about a movie made in 1991, just to call it "dated" 30 years later. You're essentially saying that it's too indicative of its time period to be good, which is kooky talk. And considering that this film is set centuries ago, talking about it being "dated" is irrelevant.

    Say what you will about Kostner not doing an accent, but his was one of the most exciting and adventure-filled versions of the story done since Errol Flynn's. It was also great how they gave Robin Hood more historical grounding by bringing in Azeem the Moor and the Crusades. One of the best contributions that helped this movie was the fantastic score by the late Michael Kamen. I'm glad I'm able to listen to it outside of the movie itself for the very first time. You can hear all the beautiful nuances of the love theme, and the power of the heroic theme. So good!

      it was a great movie!!! ...except for costner. movie would've been better served if robin was played by someone who could do an authentic english accent and wasn't so... american! the role was filled with pain, but costner could only scratch the surface of it. he did the dashing hero thing well, but in the quiet moments his robin lacked soul. morgan freeman should've been nominated for best supporting actor for azeem. he did much credit to the idea of the wise, educated muslim in a foreign land. if only costner could've matched his depth.

    Despite all the flak this movie received, it is one of the most influential pieces that defined my childhood, especially the soundtrack. I was in my school band at the time and it seemed every school was playing some version of the main theme. Just hearing this after so many years passed, it just brought back so many happy memories.

    After countless incarnations the story about Robin Hood had for the big screen, "Prince Of Thieves" (1991), starring Kevin Costner, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Alan Rickman, was a major success at the time and is often quotet as such. It was even the main base for Mel Brooks' "Men In Tights" (1994).
    Although its storyline is said to have some flaws here and there, the musical score was on point and is surely one of Michael Kamen's greatest (and lush orchestrated) of his entire career. Enjoy!

    I saw this movie when it first came out in 1991 and used it as a teaching aid to my Accounting students at the local Community College and reminded them that this movie correctly historically documents that Robin Hood and His Band of Merry Thieves Did NOT steal from the Rich and give to the Poor as is so often commonly portrayed, BUT that he Recovered the Overpaid Taxes from the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham who had overtaxed the Poor and he returned the taxes as a Tax Refund to the Poor, which is the correct version.

      Hello there,
      of course Brooks combined parts from both. The uniform of Hood and his merry men was based on the 1938's version, but the plot, likewise the flight of Hood from over the sea was based on the 1991 one. Some character-looks, too, like the Sheriff of Nottingham.
      But in the end it doesn't matter. It's a very unique and enjoyable Robin Hood adaptation on its own. :-)

Look at St. Marys Church.. just about 350 yards east is Hornby Castle.. Home of the Conyers at one time.. Sir John Conyers Jr was the Robin Hood of the Ballads aka Robin of Redesdale.. just not the first to use name... he was leader of the York Knights.. Sir Robert Hulderne was Robin of Holderness..he was Captain of the York Rebels.. there is only one record of a man using name Friar Tuck in 1417 and 1429..
