She and her husbands family do all her arranging and she tours with her church band and backing singers. She’s also a sci-fi author and a music teacher. She’s been offered big money from David Foster and other American music producers, but she knew she’d lose creative control, and that it didn’t require a big contract for her to sing to comfort people. Kim So Hyang is a South Korean gospel singer that has been active since the mid 1990's. She is likely one of the best vocalists on the planet. Her covers of 'I Have Nothing', 'Lean On Me', and 'You Raise Me Up', are all world class performances. And 'Everyone' is a clinic in singing. For some reason not too many people check out Hug Me (DMC Festival 2018). For me that version is absolutely the most dramatic, heart-wrenching, performance of hers that I've seen. Does she hit a B5 in that one? Nope, but she was in character from start to finish and stays in it for a bit after the music ends. Really reminds me of Lara Fabian, who also puts everything she has into telling the story within the song and when someone does that, they cannot just release and be cheery right away. It does take time to regain the sense of self. For me, that is one of the indicators of a great performer. Not showy with her expressions, no pointless vocal acrobatics (although she totally could have pulled those off), understands the lyrics and the music, and tells the story truthfully. She's also one of those rare singers where you can get to relax and enjoy her music without having to worry that her voice might not come through for her. You know it's going to be reliably amazing and the only thing you have to do is listen.

I’ve followed her for 7 years & obviously I echo the comments regarding her talent & many I’m sure will recommend that you check out her back story & why she sings etc & why she’s not well known outside of her homeland etc but what always amazes me is that when you hear her turn on the power & seemingly unlimited breath control you wouldn’t necessarily think that she looks like she does if you’d only heard her before & never seen her, she is tiny in both height & build!! She’s not just a one trick pony, this living angel can anything & there are video’s available to prove this & not only can she sing all these different genre’s, she sings them to an exceptional standard, rock,pop, blues/jazz, the big power ballads goes without saying,RAP (I just thought I’d type rap nice & big for you in case you thought your eyes were playing tricks on you) traditional music to name a few, but het heart is with gospel music & elements of gospel can be found in her arrangements of songs that are not usually associated with that genre in its original form. I have not yet seen her tackle country music, nor have I heard her sing anything opera ( well full opera at least, I have seen a couple of performances that you may call ‘operish!!) but in both cases, I have no doubt wotsoever that if she decided that she would like to tackle these genre’s she would succeed.

Short run down on Sohyang. She started as a gospel singer in a CCM band, got married and diagnosed with early stage ovarian cancer at just 21. She had to have both sides removed leaving her not only sterile but also with hepatitis which gave her many bouts of pneumonia through the years. First I love So Hyang there might be only one other singer that can come close and that's Morissette of the Philippines. That isn't my point, I tend to be tangent prone. Who doesn't love ADHD?!!!! O.K., O.K., I would like you to listen to her back up singers. On everyone of her live performances in the competition she is in here. It is a stellar group of singers and they add so much to her songs. I do not know who they are or if they are a regular group or if each singer was picked by So Hyang, or what. But they sing like they are knitted together somehow vocally. They remind me of those birds that fly together in a huge flock and all change direction in an instant and you wonder how the change is communicated because there is no lag at all. These singers do the same thing and it is a marvelous thing to hear. I just wanted you to know this in case they get lost in her greatness.

So Hyang is a preacher from South Korea, I have literally watched reactors completely fall apart while watching her videos, I have also seen vocal coaches begin to weep and cry and not know why, I have seen them completely shut down the reaction because they could not control their emotions, you may ask what is doing that? It is the Spirit of God in her that is causing these intense emotional reactions, plus her amazing talent.
Sohyang is not a formal minister with her church. She is a music director but conservative Christian churches like hers do not ordain women because of what Paul said in his epistles. Sohyang speaks openly about her faith and even runs a Bible study in Korean on her CZcams page but she is not ordained.

For some reason not too many people check out Hug Me (DMC Festival 2018). For me that version is absolutely the most dramatic, heart-wrenching, performance of hers that I've seen. Does she hit a B5 in that one? Nope, but she was in character from start to finish and stays in it for a bit after the music ends. Really reminds me of Lara Fabian, who also puts everything she has into telling the story within the song and when someone does that, they cannot just release and be cheery right away. It does take time to regain the sense of self. For me, that is one of the indicators of a great performer. Not showy with her expressions, no pointless vocal acrobatics (although she totally could have pulled those off), understands the lyrics and the music, and tells the story truthfully. She's also one of those rare singers where you can get to relax and enjoy her music without having to worry that her voice might not come through for her. You know it's going to be reliably amazing and the only thing you have to do is listen.
You might try her "everyone" it's a roller coaster ride. Love her no matter the song. You give great reaction keep up the good work.

OMG believe when I saying that every performance is pure gold.
I’ve followed her for 7 years & obviously I echo the comments regarding her talent & many I’m sure will recommend that you check out her back story & why she sings etc & why she’s not well known outside of her homeland etc but what always amazes me is that when you hear her turn on the power & seemingly unlimited breath control you wouldn’t necessarily think that she looks like she does if you’d only heard her before & never seen her, she is tiny in both height & build!!
She’s not just a one trick pony, this living angel can anything & there are video’s available to prove this & not only can she sing all these different genre’s, she sings them to an exceptional standard, rock,pop, blues/jazz, the big power ballads goes without saying,RAP (I just thought I’d type rap nice & big for you in case you thought your eyes were playing tricks on you) traditional music to name a few, but het heart is with gospel music & elements of gospel can be found in her arrangements of songs that are not usually associated with that genre in its original form. I have not yet seen her tackle country music, nor have I heard her sing anything opera ( well full opera at least, I have seen a couple of performances that you may call ‘operish!!) but in both cases, I have no doubt wotsoever that if she decided that she would like to tackle these genre’s she would succeed.

Short run down on Sohyang. She started as a gospel singer in a CCM band, got married and diagnosed with early stage ovarian cancer at just 21. She had to have both sides removed leaving her not only sterile but also with hepatitis which gave her many bouts of pneumonia through the years. Her ongoing health and faith are why she remains an independent artist, so no large label backing, hence her also not being as known as she should be.
Sohyang is has a wealth of performances, both gospel as well as other genres. This one on Immortal Songs 2 is a cover of a classic Simon & Garfunkel Folk song from 1970. Wasn't sure if you knew since you didn't mention them. Immortal Songs 2 that she has been on numerous times is a type of celebrity sing off. The night has a theme and the artists who are invited on have to re arrange a song. This is her own arrangement.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. He invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Do more from her, Sohyang is a terrific singer and storyteller, with an innate ability to make you feel exactly what she feels when performing. Her English covers are really, REALLY good, but watching her emote in her native language is actually an experience in itself. I'd suggest you try something like "Arirang Alone" or "Everyone" next (if you go for the second, search for a video with eng subs, you will need them). Cheers..C:

First I love So Hyang there might be only one other singer that can come close and that's Morissette of the Philippines. That isn't my point, I tend to be tangent prone. Who doesn't love ADHD?!!!! O.K., O.K., I would like you to listen to her back up singers. On everyone of her live performances in the competition she is in here. It is a stellar group of singers and they add so much to her songs. I do not know who they are or if they are a regular group or if each singer was picked by So Hyang, or what. But they sing like they are knitted together somehow vocally. They remind me of those birds that fly together in a huge flock and all change direction in an instant and you wonder how the change is communicated because there is no lag at all. So Hyang is a preacher from South Korea, I have literally watched reactors completely fall apart while watching her videos, I have also seen vocal coaches begin to weep and cry and not know why, I have seen them completely shut down the reaction because they could not control their emotions, you may ask what is doing that? It is the Spirit of God in her that is causing these intense emotional reactions, plus her amazing talent.
Sohyang is not a formal minister with her church. She is a music director but conservative Christian churches like hers do not ordain women because of what Paul said in his epistles. Sohyang speaks openly about her faith and even runs a Bible study in Korean on her CZcams page but she is not ordained.
Truth, seen it many times! See is such a Special Performer!
She's only a "preacher" in a very conceptual sense.
