In this video, I design some nautilus gears and turn them into some amazing interactive and moving artwork. No matter how long I sit and stare at the finished piece, it just doesn't seem like the gears should work with one another... but they do! Check it out for yourself to see how awesome both pieces turned out!

Absolutely gorgeous, love the tiny hand operated gear version but wow the plug in, larger gears with inspiration of nature… just are fascinating and amazing and I like how the concept of unity or marriage fits with it. Very complimenting message and work of art
Glad you like it! Thanks a ton!
DREW!!!! Your sense of humor surpasses your ability to construct interesting things... Regardless of whomever lives next door to you, they deserve something in return for all the vicarious assistance they've provided for all your projects over the years. I got rid of my (mega-$$$) turntable when I digitized all the albums I'd collected over the decades (first pressings off masters), but I could just see you disassembling your neighbors prize, new, mega-$$$ turntable for a DC motor to turn this project. (I didn't wet my pants laughing, but... it was close)!!
You touched a nerve with the gears, though. Back in my youth - after the kids were grown and gone - I raced a Lotus 61 formula Ford. I had an old milling machine and lathe in my garage and, unable to purchase gearsets for the Hewland gearbox, I made my own. Now while an individual gearset might take me forty-hours to machine, not counting my time, it was cheaper than buying that same gear from the manufacturer. Was it worth it? I won seven championships in the eleven years I raced the car. At 75, my days of making exotic things have passed, but as long as I'm upright and wasting oxygen, I'll continue to enjoy your channel!
Oh wow! That sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you're liking the videos. :)
With tales like that from your past you're FAR from being an oxygen thief! Respect to your technical skills and fearless driving skills! 👍
@@elguapo1507 NOW you've got ME curious how you know about my driving skills. Law enforcement EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) instructor, former chief competition driving instructor for Historic Sports Car Racing-West, seven championships racing my Lotus 61 formula Ford....
@@carlmclelland7624 Well, I saw you backing in to that space at 60mph between the two Porsches last night wearing your sunglasses Carl! 😁😉
I own a cnc machine and finding creators brave enough to use one in a video is refreshing. I get why they are polarizing , but they are still a ton of fun to use to create things with and isn't that what the "Hobby" is all about. I can't believe your neighbors dont have Ring cameras on their houses. I mean the amount of lumber you have taken ....... Have a Blessed day .
You said it! There's still plenty of "woodworking" that's required when using a CNC. The folks that don't know better just assume that you put a log on the CNC, hit start, and 30minutes later it's a chair.
WOWZA!
The most unique channel on CZcams. Always enjoy your videos.
Appreciate that! Thanks! :)
Your work and your neighbors are the best!
Thanks. :)
I Have no words except AWESOME!!!
I have no words except THANKS! :)
Watching and listening to you do your projects, is more then educational... It's great stress relief! Who couldn't help but laugh. Maybe you need to be a stockholder in Oral-B!
Hehe thanks for watching
Duuuuuude. You outdid yourself!
Haha, thanks!
Very cool. Your poor neighbor must think he lives in a bad area. Stuff just goes missing every time you make a video. Lol😂
I think you just crossed well into the genius category. Awesome project.
Thanks a bunch!
I would stare at those gears all day!
Mesmerizing, right?
Boy you are just KILLING it with the CnC machine. I want to get one but would need to use my neighbour’s driveway to park my cars on. And they’re nowhere near as accommodating as yours is.
Thanks for putting the flathead screw and walnut into the full length video. Armageddon has been averted once again.
An incredible project, once again. You always make my day. Or week. Or sometimes, month.
Haha, thanks! Glad you liked it
Mesmerizing is such an apt word!
You'll get lost in it if you stare too long
at about 3:15, I was thinking, "boy, woodworking is amazing". - great build! I need to get a CNC at some point.
Thanks! :)
Love “Project Nautilus “. Completely nerding out over here😆
Haha glad you liked it!
That's a super-cool project... you're right, it's hypnotic! Well done.
Thanks!!
Woodworker, artist, philosopher!
And, maybe marriage counselor?
Oh yeah….those were great uses for a toothbrush. I don’t really use them for brushing teeth either. Wonder why they’re called that?
Hehe, I'm thinking I'd probably see less of the marriage counselor if I didn't take her toothbrush.
You had me at Freedom Units.
Freeeeeeeeedommmmm!!
Very nice project. Not seeing the out takes it looks flawless. Lol. Oh Bless you who ever sneezed.
Been thinking of getting a CNC still on the fence. Keep up the amazing work.👽
Haha, thanks! I appreciate that
Absolutely genius......love it but I wouldn't get anything done because of sitting to endlessly watch it!!! I'm sure you're right that it is totally mesmirizing. Thanks again for another awesome video, good laughs and sharing your amazing skills!
Thank you! 😊
Cool ranch Doritos, marriage counseling, woodworking… the trifecta!
All in one! I'm swiss army knife of content creation.
Another great job Drew.
Thanks! 😊
Drew, you are one Cool Ranch Dorito. Thanks for another great video.
The highest compliment a man could get.
I like this one! I've been machining gears for 35 years, and been a woodworker for 40, so this is right in my wheelhouse! I've been thinking about a project that uses gears, so... Good video, brother!
Oh awesome! Thanks! Glad you liked it
Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing the different techniques. 👍👍
Thanks so much 😊
Fibonocci sequences are awesome!
Agreed!
Like night & day, Like Allen & flat head screw!
Haha exactly!
All jokes aside it was actually really cool to see the onefinity in more detail after hearing probably 40hrs worth of content about it on your We Built A Thing podcast 😅
Really does seem quite achievable to learn & that gaming controller for flattening looks like so much fun
It is! It's addicting! It's so easy with that little gamepad controller.
Dear neighbor, just a heads up that due to the mysterious thefts of wood and electronics from our home, we are considering a surveillance system to catch these thieves in the act. Disregard the blinky red lights above the inside garage and outside doors. ... Cool project and as always, love the outtakes!
Very cool project. I’m going to grab some tracing paper and a coping saw - check back with me in a couple of years.
Haha, exactly why I didn't even try making it by hand.
Those are both really neat, Drew. When you were choosing the first two pieces of wood, I figured you would just see what your neighbor had that you could "borrow".
Bill
Some of those pieces have been sitting on that shelf for about 6yrs... it was their turn. :)
Mesmerizing!!!!
Right? :)
Now this is a cool project. Great job Drew! I too have the Onefinity X50 Journeyman. Got mine a little over a year before you and upgraded it a couple times. It's been a fantastic machine. Right now I'm making Chess pieces with it.
Oh wow, nice! I'm not that advanced just yet
Nice job. I like your inserted humor too.
:) Thanks
I like the way the nautilus gears overhang the mounting base. I don't know why that's so pleasing, but it shows some interesting artistic forethought.
I thought so too! Originally, I was going to make the base big enough where they didn't, but then I decided against it in the end. Glad I did
I'm glad you found a motor that worked! It's an interesting situation. As the gear spins the amount of torque needed by the motor varies. And like you said, that causes the speed to change depending on the position of the gear. Very mesmerizing!
It is! Thanks for your help, Zach! And thanks for watching!
Very cool project Drew!! Awesome job!!!
Thanks a bunch!
Thats a nice yin yang, you sir have great skills. I love to watch your builds, listen to the very humorous narrative and the outtakes are hilarious. Keep them comen....
Thank you very much! Glad you're liking them!
Love it! I've always been intrigued by gears, too.
Right?
When routing all edges, like round-overs, do the end-grain sides first and that way any tear-out will get cleaned up when you do the other sides.
Only if you're lucky. I've had times when the tear-out is beyond the diameter of the roundover. It's a good habit to get into to do it like I demonstrated in the video.
WOW! that’s neat. Captain Nemo would be proud.
I should hope so... I made it for him.
You should try to make each one into a 2:1 ratio of the previous one, which accelerate the next one at twice the speed. Result is the appearance of acceleration along the run of gears an amazing effect to watch...
That flathead kills me! 😂
But damn, that was a wonderful masterpiece.
You've outdone yourself.
Super-impressed!
Haha, I found the ugliest one I could. :)
This makes me want to do my DIY CNC upgrades to make this. That's awesome!
Thanks! :)
WOW Drew, if it wasn't for me lacking basic intelligence and creativity, I could do something like this.
GREAT piece! !! !!!
Haha, thanks!
That is AWESOME .I enjoy all your videos and the free of charge humor .
Free?? Oh, you'll get my bill. :) Thanks, Mike
Wow Drew so very cool glad to see a new video from you and it was crazy cool great job and funny as always
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Great build! Very cool and the analogy is right on the money! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
That is really cool!
Thanks!
Thanks Drew.
You bet
That was a fun journey, thanks for sharing, great editing as well!
Glad you enjoyed it!
[5:10] > "Fortunately, my neighbor bought a new record player..."
I don't see how that's relev...
> "... and this motor came right out of it pretty easily."
Ah yes, carry on.
😉
I love, love, love it! Not just a pretty face after all 😊
If I had a nickel for every time I was told that I was a pretty face, I'd have five cents.
It ain't a Fisher project without some sort of contribution from an unaware neighbour.😂
The game controller was a nice touch 🤣🤪
Great project! Love those tulips on the shelf
Thanks! Those were made by a friend at Michigan Millworks. Look'em up and buy some
Loved the marriage analogy.
It's accurate! Now gimme some chips
You had me at Freedom Units
It's how Mel Gibson measured his sword in Braveheart.
Absolutely! (insert American flag here, cant's find it in the emojis)
@@FishersShop for sure!!! ⚔ (there's a sword emoji but not an American flag, huh?)
Excellent video!
Thank you very much!
Great project.
Thank you!
Awesome project Drew!!
Makes me want to go out and purchase a CNC machine.
You should!
Looks great and I had a good laugh while watching it. All the best ☺
Glad you enjoyed it
Those look great Drew, I enjoyed the fusion 360 demo too. I didn't know you could reproduce shapes along a line. As always, love the neighbour jokes.
Yeah, that feature was a life-saver
Great idea and great execution ( and only a couple of “Oh! Crap”s )! Nice work Drew.
Haha, thanks! :)
Hope you feel better, Drew.
Exceptional project, well done.
Many thanks!
Will the plans for this project be available for purchase on your web site? @@FishersShop
Brother! Super cool... Love the marriage counseling at the end. Ordering a case of Ranch Doritos from the Amazon.
Haha, nice!
This was another great video done by you!!
Thanks again!
Of course
Love your work as always my brother! Great job!
Much appreciated!
I've been fascinated with nautilus gears for a long time now. Love the way both projects came out!
Thank you!
That was really cool- thank you
Thanks for watching!
That is so cool. Great job.
Glad you enjoyed it
When is your neighbor coming over to see how you have used his stuff?
He's got half his home round there! 😂😂
I love love the big one❤
That's my favorite piece as well. :) Thanks for watching
@@FishersShop i watch all your vidéos love them you have gold in your hands
First video I have seen from you. Your humor is amazing and I loved the project, definitely turning on notifications for this channel!
Welcome aboard!
Great project and your humor never disappoints!
Glad you enjoy it!
Really cool!
Thanks
Nice one!
Thanks!
Awesome!!!
Thanks!!
Way cool!
Thanks!
Great job... love the humor
Thanks!
You could have found that metric screw in the carburetor of your neighbors lawn tractor.
I could have. :)
Absolutely beautiful! Over the years your neighbour has really suffered! From emptying your shop vac in to his new swimming pool to nicking his table lamp cable! 😂😂 Looks life your wife's getting the same treatment too with those toothbrushes! 😂😂
Love your humour! It fits perfectly into your narrating! 👍
Haha, thanks!
Awesome video, Drew!
I saw the small gears on Instagram and was super impressed then. However, after watching this video, I'm even more impressed by the larger gears. The way the wood species compliments each other is really nice. I didn't think Jarrah and walnut could look that good together.
Yeah, I was a bit worried that they wouldn't go well with the walnut backer, but was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for watching! :)
You have a talent. To create something like that is just amazing.
Well thanks! :)
I have a bunch of motors salvaged from microwave turntables like that, I'll have to look into doing something like this.
Oh nice! Do it!
Nice work! CNCs are pretty fun :)
Yes they are!
Nice!!
Thanks!
Very cool
Thanks
Freedom units! Do you want some Freedom Fries with that?
Yes.... yes I do.
Very cool.
Thanks. :)
Awesome! Great combination of woods/tools/design.
Would be really neat if you could incorporate a clock mechanism on one of the big gears. Art AND function :). Keep up the great work.
I almost did but the problem is how the gears spin at different speeds. I could really slow it all down and make one revolution take 1hr and then just put numbers around the end but then you lose so much of the magic because it's so satisfying to see the gears turn together.
@@FishersShop Oh wow! I wasn't even thinking that way. That's a lot cooler than my thought of "replace the flat head screw with a 2-hand clock mechanism".
Good point on the slow speed, that would've taken away the magic for sure. Thanks for the reply and the content!
I'm a bit "shell" shocked at how well the nautilus gears turned out. Amazing project
😉haha, thanks!
@@FishersShop I thought you would appreciate the dad joke
Beautiful work! You mentioned motorizing the piece with the different species of wood. Do you think that if you motorized the middle gear instead of one of the end gears, maybe it would be easier on the system and not break any of the teeth off? I'm not sure if placement makes it easier or harder... or if the resistance is all the same.
I thought of that and you're right... it's easier in the center. But I still think the gears would strip out after a bit and didn't want to risk it
That's mad, Drew... Crazy beautiful work!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
You're close... it starts with "D". lol. Thanks for watching! -Drew
@@FishersShop Damn, that's the second time I call you Dave, Drew... Sorry. 😬
The fact that you weren't able to source a matching flathead bolt for the motor really grinds my gears. Sounds like it's your neighbor's fault. 😁
😉
I like how you use that all-sixteenths instead of a wrench or socket.
Really enjoy the story of how you find everything to build these great projects 🎉😊
Glad you enjoy it!
Your wife and neighbor are lucky to have you around o
