    As someone quite rightly pointed out, make sure you pump the brake pedal before driving! I forgot to include that in the video.

      I personally always clean the brake piston before pushing it back home so i have less chance of pushing crap past the dust seal and against the caliper seal

    The fact you're doing all these videos on a Fabia is perfect.. we've just upgraded to a Fabia Estate, so these are even more accurate!

    It's good to see you pay attention to all the little bits, i.e wheel wedges and axle stands etc. Recently I had a scissor jack collapse on me, stripped the threaded rod right out. I'd never go under a car on any jack alone without something to back it up, but those scissor jacks have a very short life span. Once you've wound them up and down a few times they weaken quickly. I'd be a leg down if I didn't stick to my guns that going under a car without a stand is a death wish. People just don't get it. Jack's go and go fast. No time for mistakes when you have over a ton on your head.

    This might be a suggestion for the next brake video you do. Most mechanics are well aware of how to change brakes on vehicles, however many people that are trying to attempt this for themselves will watch your video on here and think no bother I'll do my own brake pads which is fantastic.
    However I really think you should add in somewhere about pumping the brake pedal when there done as there's nothing worse then getting in a car to find out someone's changed the brakes without doing it and bang straight into a car person etc.
    Just a heads up mate more than anything

    Great video can I just ask where you got your jack from? Looks alot better than my Aldi one

    • @mrman17
      @mrman17 Před 6 lety

      To be honest, I think more or less any "full size" jack would be better than one of those small ones (whether from Aldi or elsewhere) for anyone doing work on a car on a fairly regular basis. They usually allow you to jack the car up quicker, higher and are more stable.
      Take a look at places like Machine Mart, Toolstation, Halfords or even eBay.
      Just be aware of minimum height (some jacks require more room under the car and won't go under some lower sports cars for example) and maximum height. And unless you're jacking up anything heavier than a range rover, most jacks can handle most of what we do.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage Před 6 lety +1

      Graham Reid there is absolutely nothing wrong with using copper grease on pads I've used it for years and I also use it on my rally car never had a problem on some of the new modern cars they have a special new Ally bellhousing built into the break discs and have special calipers on these particularly cars they do recommend using different Greece but on everything else you will not have a problem

  • @MattP79
    @MattP79 Před 6 lety

    Any thoughts on whether it's preferable to push the brake fluid back into the reservoir, when retracting the caliper, or open the bleed nipple and drain it?

    • @mrman17
      @mrman17 Před 6 lety +1

      On cars with ABS systems, you are "supposed" to open the bleed nipple when you push the piston(s) back. I don't really know of anyone who does or has had a problem from not doing that (that's not to say no one hasn't).

    • @skippyglen6610
      @skippyglen6610 Před 5 lety

      My preferred option is to open the bleed nipple for two reasons. One is that you are changing some brake fluid. Secondly without use bleed nipples have a nasty habit of seizing up. Which is a right pain when you do need to change the fluid.

  • @vcsxivcsxi3109
    @vcsxivcsxi3109 Před 6 lety +2

    Not trying to hate im just wondering are you ment to change the discs at the same time?

    • @mrman17
      @mrman17 Před 6 lety +1

      It really depends upon the condition and amount of wear on the discs. In my opinion, those were getting close to needing to be changed and probably will have to be done the next time the pads are done.

      The Savage Garage cool, I mean open them up before starting in case the supplier sent totally the wrong thing. I took a fuel pump out of a Peugeot once, when I opened the package it was an indicator lease sent in error, annoying as I had the car apart

  • @leoncooney8686
    @leoncooney8686 Před 4 lety

    Probably a silly question but we all got to start somewhere 🤣 but is this the same process for the rear brakes ? Or is there a difference ?

    • @OffGridInvestor
      @OffGridInvestor Před 4 lety

      Almost every time YES. Because nearly all cars these days are disc brakes on the back too. The exception may be a few older commercial vehicles, particularly ones that can tow a few tons. Do realize that in ALL cars regardless of front or rear wheel drive, the front pads wear far faster and you'll likely replace the front 3 times for every 1 back replacement. It's just a momentum thing because you're usually driving forwards so the front brakes take most of the load.

  • @Daedalus_UK
    @Daedalus_UK Před 6 lety +1

    You had some brake fluid coming out when using the C Clamp. I would get yourself a wind-back tool.

  • @thebeerinnandrewmckenna2655

    I recently did my brake pads and disks all round on my Zafira mk1, and they have a piece of metal sticking out, but its not to make a circuit and show a light, it just scores against the disk, then you can hear it when you are driving. I think you rushed the cleaning of the caliper, as I used a bigger wire brush and got a grinder with a wire brush attachment on, and it brought them up nicely. Also, if it has abs, I was advised to use Ceratec instead of copper grease, because metallic particles can get in the abs sensor. Im not criticising, but like to comment, and I learn from your videos. Add me to Facebook, it was me talking about soot in egr and intake manifold. Look up Andrew Mckenna on Facebook.

  • @elliottpeters2996
    @elliottpeters2996 Před 6 lety

    As one person already touched on .. NEVER use grease or copper grease on the threaded portion of any brake retaining component or wheel fasteners. It can cause them to loosen spontaneously and is very dangerous.

    • @TheSavageGarage
      @TheSavageGarage  Před 6 lety +1

      Elliott Peters when did I do that?

    • @elliottpeters2996
      @elliottpeters2996 Před 6 lety

      The Savage Garage You dipped the pins in grease and smeared it around with your finger before refitting .. including the threads. They are actually supposed to be fitted using a small amount of thread locking compound. I am not criticising you in particular .. I think your videos are great. Just making a safety comment in general.
