The Boys is a darkly satirical hit for the Amazon Prime streaming service, a brutal send of superhero life as depicted in blockbusters like The Avengers and Justice League. It makes sense that the satire is so dark and biting when you realize that the show is based on a comic book series by none other than Garth Ennis. Ennis’ other popular title was the joyfully blasphemous Preacher and his follow up takes an unflattering picture of what a world of superheroes might more likely turn out to be like. From the petulant Homelander for whom the only thing keeping him from just murdering all of humanity is the need for approval, or the revenge crazed Butcher who will stop at nothing to get his revenge on Homelander for killing his wife. While the series retains a number of big hallmark moments in the comic series like A-Train running through Hughie’s girlfriend or Homelander and Queen Maeve’s failure to save the passengers on the plane, there are some key differences. In some cases it’s in the form of a character in one medium but not the other, like Translucent who only appears in the show, taking the place of Jack from Jupiter who doesn’t appear in the show. Main characters like Hughie and Annie, otherwise known as Starlight, are given a little more agency and decisions in what they do next while other characters, like The Deep, take on the sins of characters like Homelander, A-Train, and Black Noir. Regardless of what shade of dark you like your series in, the show continues to impress. Let’s look at some of the changes that have happened.

I like how they changed Stilwell to a woman. It makes Homelander’s relationship with her more interesting and uncomfortable
But comic book Stilwell seems more interesting cuz of him not being scared of Homelander
@@satellite3253 I think that's the role Edgar takes tho, so that's fine
See i disagree. Stilwell as a man acts as Homelanders father figure, and goes quite a bit into Freudian psychology. Their dynamic is far more interesting than the shows I feel
@@samuelwood8010 Idk man. In the show, they delve deep into the Oedipus complex. To the point of being incredibly uncomfortable.
@@thomasstewart1380 for sure but even so, it's a totally different sort of breakdown. Still interesting but not what it should be y'know?
A-Train doesn't run through Hughie's girlfriend in the comics. He throws a bad guy hard enough to rip her arms off and slam her into a wall, turning her into a pancake.
The show was more brutal with it tho
@@deathserpent9747 I mean you literally see her smushed body in the comic
@@pandogstudios1512 you also see her broken bones and intestines in the show. Atleast she had a body to bury in the comics
@@deathserpent9747 Oh my bad, I thought by brutal you meant like more gory or unsettling or whatever, from like a reader’s pov. Getting obliterated like that is more brutal, fair.
Also a train is black in the show and he's white in the comics lol
I definitely like how they just took the comic, and formed new stories, characters, and all around basic universe instead of direct convert.
They kind of had to. There is no way they could put the comic to screen as it was. It's just so gross and hateful.
@@benyspensierijr.5973
Hateful in what way?
@@Wizard_Pikachu I read that The Boys creator is cynical and while the core story of the colic is good, it’s too dark.
@@mackshearer974 how you gonna diss his writing if you’ve never read his work. Fucking ignorant prick
Differences between the show and the comics lol @
"No one stays dead in comics except Uncle Ben" hilarious
What If Uncle Ben survived: @Jay J hold my beer...
Don’t forget Batman’s parents
@@parkermielke5328 Thomas Wayne has his variations. But not Uncle Ben.
A version of Uncle Ben is out there where he became Spider-Man. He comes out in the spider-verse storyline. He ends up becoming Grandpa Ben and taking care of baby Ben in marvel universe 2 also being there for spider girl.
And Batmans parents, and Jean Grey
I just want to see Billy Butcher take some Compound V and watch him throw Homelander around in an episode.
@patrick hizkia yeh that would be great
Even in the comics where butcher is op af no amount of compound V will put him on even terms w homelander it’s not happening
well, no way, in the comics where's he's much more powerful he didn't do it, imagine in the TV show, not happening
Like in the comics everyone has access to compound v and use it to fight on even terms so they don’t need supers unlike the show, also most of the heroes on the show are pretty true to the comics in terms of strength, with the only exception being the boys (who are so much stronger and also act as an actual CIA branch in the comics, they can take out B tier teams like nothing).
Isnt compound v only possible on babies tho?
CZcams is getting real comfortable with these double unskippable ads. Huh
Soundcloud and Spotify as well smh
They're trying to make us buy YT red
Note, if you foward the video until the end and then rewind and foward and so on, all the ads go away or you will only get one but its a small price to watch without other ads
@@Quottidomin13 thanks!
Bruh can you not copy comments word for word though
In the comics, "compound v" is reserved for the Boys only. They take it. It makes them more super than the supes, making them feel weak in comparison to The Boys. It's just a completely different story, more about revenge than satire.
So is this basically how season 3 will play out? I'm guessing they'll find some way to get ahold of some super-er version of compound v. I kinda figured, at some point, they would do something like this i'm just surprised Butcher didn't inject any yet.
@@doomdude3034 I think it’d be more shocking if tv-Butcher did, considering he’s not just anti-corrupt supes, but anti-superpowers in general.
@@FragmentedR_YT but just like in the comics, the comic butcher is way more anti super than the tv show, and in the comic book he took the v, so I think it would make sense
@@mrpepper1743 yeah because he realize that need he needs to become one if he wants to beat one
I dont think the boys are stronger than the 7 in the comics. The 7 overall are more powerful, but the boys have actual strategic planning and coordination that make them more effective overall. Its discussed directly in the comics when some organization (i forget which) is theorizing over who would win a Boys vs 7 conflict.
I just finished every single comic book of the Boys and trust me, everything is different. But I got to say I love them both, the show and the comic.
I low key perfect the show because of the darkness and it tells a bit of a better story where comics are just random most of the time
@@DailyDoseofShortsVideos I agree to that, I also love the fact they have zero powers on the show, what makes the threat even greater.
Tell me about mommy milk
@@DailyDoseofShortsVideos yeah I couldn't get into the comics that much, but the show is legit all around great
I tried to read the comic. It was unreadable for me. Horrible comic. The art style was all over the place and I didn't really like the storys either. The series on the other hand is amazing.
This is such a base level understanding of the boys, it’s not just a satire/ parody of superheroes but also a satire of how the worlds run today. We put celebrities and people in charge on such a high pedestal that we turn a blind eye to when they abuse their power, just like in the boys.
Very true! That's why I love it.
Base-level understanding is CBR’s speciality
@@gplgs4640 lol word
That’s true for the show but the comic is more parody like. Honestly the show is wayyy better than the comic in that aspect
yes! I can also add that it satires modern media superheroes too, look what they did with she-hulk, they created a garbage product and will try to defend it, no matter how bad it is, they go balls deep into trying to convince you thay it's good, and slowly turning al super hero content into a money producing machine instead of dedicating enough time for to be good
Him: "Stretchiness is the worst superpower"
Me: "I'll let Arm-Fall-Off-Boy know he's off the hook"

I think changing Stormfront to a woman was a stroke of genius.
Interesting that Homelander has a relationship with both the gender swapped characters.
I'm ok with the gender swapp8if they stayed faithful to the character. This wasn't it chief. She was just another boink partner for Homelander.
They should have made Maeve a dude
@@Micolashcage1 considering they left out the propaganda that was in the comics, it makes no sense to call her "queen". The shock of compound V being public wasn't so bad in the show as it was in the comics.
@@chudchadanstud of they change the gender/race of a character it damn well better change what happens story wise because if it doesn't, what's the point?
Just a quick correction. Simon Pegg is English, not Scottish. However the character of Hughie in the comics is Scottish. Only his likeness was based on Pegg
Glad someone else picked up on this Ha Ha Simon Pegg is a pretty well known English actor
well, we can say they both are british
It’s kinda crazy how half the stuff on here is being implemented in season 3. It makes me even more excited to see what they do going forward
Simon Pegg isn't Scottish; his wife is. He's English
the simplest of Googles bears this out. Lazy editing.
Question: Why wouldn't they put Simon Pegg in The Boys? It would feel like a match made in heaven.
@@unfortunatewitnessX he was drawn as a young simon pegg (yep he was the real inspiration) but now he became to old to play "himself"...the relationship with him and starlight would be a bit weird a la "whos your daddy?" style xD but (i think it was kripke) they still wanted him to be part of the show so they made him hughies dad ;)
But........wasn't that why he played "Scotty" in the new Star Trek?
@@PrinceIsot No.. James Doohan wasn't Scottish either.
It's one of the first times where I can say I don't mind the changes, the comics are great, the series is grate, I just hope they don't screw it up like always
The changes are pretty grate.
I'm grateful 🙏
Yes. Grate.
best show going grate actors!
Very grate
I clicked just to see if anyone corrected the spelling, glad no one did. That's pretty grate.
How is Black Noirs drastic character change not mentioned? It completely changes the story
I was looking for this as well. I only watched the series, so I’m pretty interested if they will actually use the Cloned Homelander as Black Noir. It’s been said that we haven’t seen the last of him.
@@DrkEmotionless The series is great. I think they will bring back Black Noir as homelanders over powered and over psychotic clone. It would fit as no one would recognize the difference.
But the stories changed drastically so who knows. Looking forward to see where they take it
I'm sure it's because it's an old video
@@DrkEmotionlesshomelander mentions he can see though his mask and see his face, he would’ve mentioned their similarities. Also, he’s black in the flashback before he gets his face melted.
The actor that plays the fire dependent hero in “The Boys” played Iceman in the X-men movies
I knew it his face look super familiar
Lamplighter is same as pyro in x men and the actor who plays as lamplighter plays as iceman in the x men
@@jaycutler4013 lol that’s crazy how I just realized it’s Bobby from X2 using a Zippo and projecting fire just like Pyro lol
Obviously, Who would forget this?
@@cleanercomet8455 most people forget that Shawn Ashmore exists.
The Stilwell change was fantastic. They gave the cold unfeeling calculated nature that affects Homelander to Edgar, while giving the closeness and this uncomfortable intimacy with Madelyn and Homelander.
I also really like what the series did for Starlight. Watching the series of unfortunate events in one character is far less gripping than what they did with her in the series
Totally! Starlight from the comics sounds a lot like a passive victim, which is grating on several levels. Having her actively try to fight for what she believes is right, but still suffer the indignities of having to work with this bunch of crooks, is much more relateable.
“The legend doesn’t exist”
The legend-And I took that personally
I feel like they should have worded that diffrently like "The Legend hasn't made an apperance"
Honestly, it’s amazing how there are so many Gender swaps from the comics, yet the show handles all of them so well.
@LioSlayer Stilwell, Stormfront, Neumann and Malory. That’s quite a few.
Ya, it literally never mattered. It's almost as if it's the writing that matters.
Damn, it's almost like they're the same characters just with a different gender... How would they handle that poorly? How does one handle that poorly?
@@JowoeBunchaNumbers Marvel and DC have and are about to again.
I've only watched the tv show so can't imagine Stillwell and Stormfront being men, I think them being women makes far more sense. Plus from his description in this video there's a male stillwell anyway when Giancarlo is introduced.
Don't forget that instead of Black Noir being the contingency plan for when Homelander goes rouge, Ryan Butcher replaces him as the contingency plan in the show.
Idk black noir had a few moments where I thought he was gonna fight homelander but hes just waiting on him to cross that line in front of him because there was one scene in particular with starlight where black noir started to get up like he was gonna do something to homelander
@@romellpoellinetz7435 no i dont think so, he knows he isnt strong enough. bullets can hurt so that means hl can laser him
and he may be not strong as him because he hasnt developed his powers yet
@@jancarlosmanon4556 at least in the series he's significantly older than anyone in the 7, he was in the original Payback team along with Soldier Boy, so he couldn't be Homelander's clone
well as of right now, its Soldier Boy thats the contingency for Homelander
Funny how 1 year later we would get introduced into some things from this video, like The Legend, Maeve Alcoholic, MM true reason to hate Vought, etc.
This show is so good. Can't wait to see more.
Is The Legend in the third season??
@@atanaZion Yes
I didn't realize this video was pre season 3 so I was like "what? but the legend is on the show" it took me until I read your comment to realize
You forgot to mention how in comics Black Noir was an evil clone of Homelander, prepared to kill him if things ever went out of control. He was also stronger than homelander.
Whereas in the show black noir appears way weaker than homelander and has an allergy to nuts. He also doesn't seem like a clone.
He's an actual black dude
@@Zenocius Well, that's just outside of the show. In the show, they haven't revealed his true identity. He could even be an alien for all we know.
Worst part is, they literaly have this comparison on the thumbnail.

Why wouldn't they put Simon Pegg in The Boys?
I still want to see the legend played by Danny DeVito
We got Paul Reiser!
@@jackcayman honestly he was great
this show is a fantastic example of how you can take a piece of media and adapt it differently to improve it. The Boys is great as a loose adaptation, mostly because the story in the show is so much more compelling and better.
This is a rare case where i agree and think every change is for the better.
I’m pretty sure A-Train knew Popclaw in the comics because he was formally on the same team as her which is “Teenage Kix”. But hey we don’t know we have no evidence.
Stretching isn’t the worst power ask luffy
Then again luffy is made of rubber
When he was talking shit about stretchy powers all I could think of was Luffy’s KKG like sure, ‘worst power’ that can fold a fucking island
Eh, in the context of One Piece it actually doesn’t offer much of anything in terms of additive ability outside of being all but immune to blunt force attacks. *Luffy* (who is a super prodigy according to Reileigh) spent 10 years learning to make them usable.
Not bad in bed too
The superpower that made the pirate captain unable to swim.
In the comics, as opposed to just The Deep sexually assaulting Starlight, the other men of The Seven do so as well. I believe it was Homelander that initiated it in the comics, as well. The comics are way too wild to be adapted more directly. I think one of the biggest differences is the relationship The Boys have with Compound V in the comics. I enjoy the comics and the show, but they are almost as different as they are alike.
Well. In the comics its just the 3 guys, Black Noir, Homelander, and A-Train. True though, where I think the comic series is infinitely better, its way too wild to have a direct adaptation. Homelander (cough) devouring a baby is kinda intense.

What is his story in comics tell
@@aguyinabox5098 I’m pretty sure his mother worked in a factory and was exposed to compound v causing MM to develop powers and also become addicted to his mothers breast milk hence the name (will actually die without it) his mentally handicapped brother also had powers but died brutally due to them manifesting, this made his dad file a lawsuit against vought basically solidifying them onto their shit list

The Boys isn't really a critique of superheroes or the superhero genre, it's a critique of American capitalism
If it really were accurate there'd be a socialist superhero simping for megacorps
@@diesemautokerl2181 What is Queen Maeve if not a neoliberal girlboss?

@@diesemautokerl2181 socialism isn't the only criticism of capitalism
I think the legend got a throw away line by Maeve. When she was telling Elana about this producer who sat next to her at a premiere or something and was talking to her all night but Homelander killed him? Idk sounds pretty plausible to me
I know you probably know by now but the legend is introduced in season 3
@@joyc9844 The perks of living in the future.
Legend is back in S3, though he talk more about Soldier Boy and snorting cokes occasionally
So far I feel most of the changes work very well, especially Hughie being American, cause it just cuts out the middle man of him needing to then go to America after his girlfriend's death.
I'm going to spoil the comics a lot now, so Spoiler Warning. I doubt Black Noir is still going to be a Homelander clone in the show, which he was in the comics. The thing that makes me sure about that more than anything is Diabolical, since Black Noir went out of his way to help Homelander and protect his image, potentially being the only person Homelander can actually trust. In the comics, Black Noir was created to stop Homelander in case he went off the rails, and went crazy from being told "kill this man but only when we tell you to" then being kept in close proximity to him. I believe Black Noir does end up killing Homelander, and he's left damaged enough (literally torn apart) from the fight to then be killed. I think Homelander's son will be filling in for this role, since he will also have Homelander's powers, and has the potential to become just as, if not stronger than Homelander, though hopefully won't be insane.
Homelander clone black nior version is stupid anyways. Doesn't make sense, vaught thought "ohhh we are going to make a super un-killable insanely powerful evil Superman that can wipe out the human race if he wanted to, and our contingency plan is to make 2 of them!!! " Dumb plan
With season 3, they confirmed your suspicions with Black Noir literally being black
@@lilricebowl9731 didn't the original black noir die in Nicaragua?
@@aarnavchaturvedi2552 no you see him still alive, he just can’t talk and it seems like he got brain damage too
Welp, the opposite happened in the serie, Homlander killed Black Noir, the serie gonna have different ending after season 3, I mean, having Becky alive and the Ryan already changed the story permanently
The Legend is now in The Boys.
He was in the new episode 5 that just came out
The only thing you need to know is that the comics is disturbing enough that no studio would dare touch some of its subject matters, not even Amazon.
like Tek Knight getting it on with a meteorite
It's more that the comic is honestly pretty edgy and convoluted
@@ThePipojp My problem with Ennis' work in general. He does a great work with some of the pre-existing characters (Superman, Punisher, Wonder Woman), but his original work is most gross, disturbing stuff for the sake of shock factor and the story isn't always flashed out enough
"The Legend doesn't exist" didn't age well 😂. They've introduced him now. Thanks for making the video by the way, because I was never going to check out the comics myself.
They went and made an irredamble character in the comics one of the MOST tragic characters in the series. I felt so bad for what happened to Noir, he was arguably one of the few 'good' supes in the series
"Nobody in the Comics is dead except Uncle Ben"
Peter Parker: I know, I know...
The Hulk was not the result of super soldier serum - He was bombarded with Gamma radiation.
That’s Comic Hulk. MCU Hulk was the result of both.
Hulk was an attempt to recreate the "effect" of the super soldier serum. Not the exact formula. As was Luke cage, wolverine (as well as everyone else in weapon x) and most other government experiments
@@fox2569 The default cannon for super heroes as far as I'm concerned is their original appearances. In this case, the comics.
He was exposed during a job he was doing for Gen Ross to recreate the super soldier serum.
Frenchie, in the series, calls Hughie as Petit Hughie in the first season even though Jack Quaid is over 6ft tall. He even retorts, "I am not that short.". This is because comic book Hughie is a short, portly man.
8:50 it looks more like: what if celebrities got superpowers.
"Ezekiel had the worst powers known to superpowers, stretchy."
I mean, One Piece makes having a rubbery body seem pretty sick.
Well after the reveal his main powers are not just a rubbery body but the powers of Sun God Nika too
I'd like to throw in that A Trains side effects from abusing Compound V are all things that would technically make him faster
The single biggest difference which was also included in the thumbnail of black noir not being a clone of homelander is somehow not in this video but the fact that terror is present in the show...less than in the comics is
Cbr: he has the worst super power stretchy powers
Luffy: am I a joke to you
Luffy is a joke tho
@@aro4322 I mean kinda
@@aro4322 Snake man was dope though
Plastic Man: hold my gear
MM not having powers makes things a lot different but the whole soldier boy thing now has given him a nice new arch
Side note: In context the female's origin in the comic is presented as anything but a reliable narrative, especially since it is related by Frenchie (and take a look at his origin tale).
The legend made his way into the series now, love the video
Actually, villains can also go through tragic losses. Villains aren’t just evil by default, something terrible must happen to them as a reason. Example, a bully intimidates others to avoid getting bullied again :/
Fun fact: Different from media shows, bullies usually are surrounded by friends, they always act in group. The bullied is always the quiet person, with no friends and who dont punch back.
Not true
He's talking about villains in the sense of superhero media. The classic villain is generally someone who comes into great power and abuses it. (and the first definition for 'villain' is literally 'a wicked or evil person' so one can argue they ARE evil, if not by default then by definition lmao)
Jack homer breaks that rule
Hope they get a boost in funding for season 3! I feel we’re in for a big supe fight soon
4:14 and what a turning point that was! It really caught me off guard... Rarely I have felt disgust and anger watching a scene play out, and oh boy how this one delivered! Definitely a scene worth an award for the show.
"No one stays dead in comics....... except uncle Ben" had me on the floor
"The worst Power in Super Powerdom, Stretchy Powers "😅😅 I think a certain Pirate named Luffy turned that around .
Also, Hughie's dad says "Jinks" at some point in the show, referencing some of the very first pages of the comic, where Hughie says it and the soon-to-be dead Robin brings it up.

Im happy they changed homelander's son's actor from season 1 to 2. The one from season 1 looks like a bully you'd see in disney movies. It's a lot easier to sympathise with the one from season 2
Well the show's writers did a great job because often than not changing things fail and they still managed to pull a great story from it
I like how in season 3 they introduce The Legend
Crazy the legend just appeared this season
Anthony Starrs acting as Homelander is the second best acting I’ve seen in Comic book media
Whos 1st

@@Thouxanbanquincy Heath Ledger is No.1 and then 3rd is Jack Quaid
Watching this after season 3 has started makes me realise what new things they are bringing into the show and their origin.. the legend, temporary V and a few other points have seeped in.
Black Noir in the comics: Literally dismembers Homelander, eats a baby and kills Butcher's wife and is a clone of homelander.
vs.
Black Noir in the live-action series: Schizophrenic dude, not homelander.
7 new base : massive yacht
You didn’t even get into Stormfront being a dude in the comics
12:30 now we know the legend DOES exist
This deconstructs the superhero genre with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.
watching this video a year later and Paul Reiser is are the legend. I love how they stick to the comic Origins for the show
I'm a sucker for super heroes and brutal violence..not to mention the great mix of modern humor and perfect reflection of the problems we face today with politics, media, and social culture. My respects mmhm.
If Starlight turn electric energy into light energy. Why then didn’t she use Stormfront’s power to charge herself?
And to add she should be able to use electrical energy humans produce to charge her power.
Humans doesn't generate nearly as enough energy for it to be interesting to her. At ease, we generate the EQUIVALENT of 100W, but almost none of that is actual electricity. You couldn't light a bulb with that... Even less so recharge a supe.
Well a familiar questions was asked. And someone said Stormfront powers are plasma and not electricity if you get what I mean.
I was literally thinking of this as they were fighting, like shouldn’t pure lightning be more than enough to like supercharge her powers??
Every change they did was remarkably well done.. usually you get hundreds of thousands of angry people when you change anything but The Boys is the 1 outlier
Awesome video
Talk about spoilers with that thumbnail lol
We got the legend in season 3
Well well well, season 3 is here and the legend has arrived
At this point you would need to make a 'what is the same' between the show and comic. I love how they both stand on their own.
Speaking Of The Legend!
I wanna see James Stilwell in the show being played by Walter white
It's Bryan Cranston not Walter white
RIP NOIR
As a guy who just finished season 2 i really got disappointed with the thumbnail after searching it
they aren’t doing it in the show so dw
11:40 queen maeve rounds out the holy 'trinity' of the 'seven'? There is a lot of things wrong with this sentence 😂
In the comics, Maeve, Homelander, and Black Noir are considered "The Big Three" of the Seven (irreplaceable) so it isn't too much of a stretch to call them the Holy Trinity.
It's to continue the parody of batman, superman and wonder woman. They are called the Trinity.
I want the boys to get powers two seasons before the end
The changes arent as bad as they could be, really it helps that the comic creator makes the show
The worst superpower from superpower-dom: STRETCHY POWER
Mr. Fantastic: "How DARE you..." *chokes them with his 'worst super power'*
Plastic Man: *laughs in literally one of the strongest characters in the DC universe*
Interesting, with Season 3 now out I never expected The Legend to be an original character from the comics. Just assumed he was a show-specific parody of Hollywood directors.
Already I don’t expect when a stories is told on another medium it’d be the same, but The Boys is so good about the changes they’ve made like, they actually cared about the story
Lol the used rubber on the Deep's Helmet
Feel obliged to point out that Simon Pegg isn't Scottish, he's English. Still cool to find out why they cast him as Hughie's Dad though
I like black noir alot he doesn't talk much but he's an awesome assassin
I hope The Boys take the Compound V like in the comic.
The Legend is now part of the series (S3), and not exactly what you thought he would be were he to be in it.
Love u guys following u since 2 or 3 years
