    I am by nature obsessed with tiny details. When I saw the 2 weaves side by side it was mesmerizing the fine detail of the weave of the better hat. I'd definitely go for that if I was buying a good straw hat. Thanks for sharing. 👍☮️🌞🌟🎸🚴‍♀️🌵🐾

    Hello Greg, Fernando from Ecuador. We make these beautiful master pieces that are known as Panama hats, the real name is Toquilla hat, the bleach ones are made in Cuenca, one of our cities, the one that was shown on your video, isn’t I’m afraid a great sample of what a fine Toquilla hat is. If you visit my country I would be happy to take you to a factory at no cost of course, and tell you more about it. Cheers 😊

      Same quality and straw and the classic Panama,and pioneer. Same features and reinforcements, bogart is a more square in the crown,and nostalgic crown, wider band and slightly larger brim…the classic Panama is more elegant and clean, simple. Same quality, slightly different styling.

    Hi Kevin, Greg here in California....
    Nice to see you took a chance on a budget Tele.
    I had a pedal board made from a guy near Fresno.
    When I went to his house, I found a dark brown Tele in a heap of garbage. The guy made it in high-school and he was throwing it away.
    Well I just couldn't let that happen so he told me to take it.
    I put a chunky 50s style boat neck from wormath done in roasted maple with a skunk stripe .
    That think is a killer player.
    I can't believe I've actually had a couple of guys who played it offered me mony for it.

    I got one of the Glarry Strats and it’s awesome. The free shipping that you get in the States would have really made for a killer deal. But I found one at a shop in Oregon and it was 20% off so that made up for the cost to ship to Canada. It’s a really good guitar and I especially like that it’s as light as a feather. About a 5.5 lb feather. I also bought a Harley Benton Strat and it’s also good and cost about $50 more than the Glarry.

    The value of such things also relates to the person who may buy it.
    I never ever thought that at anytime in my life would I pay four hundred dollars for a hat. But now I know I would pay more to get exactly what I want. That is why I say value also depends on the potential buyer as much as it does the hat.
    I have a bit more money than I used to have but the big change is my own values.

I was going to ask you about the snap brim but in this video you went right to it and showed me how to fix the snap, your the man! Thanks for the compliment! Uh, yeah, assuming it’s the inside of the crown, u can fix it..
      if there are some loose pieces of straw inside, it’ll snag your hair sometimes, find the area inside the crown that’s snagging your hair and cover it with a sticker or some white medical adhesive tape will cushion it.. use the tape for another purpose too..
      you can write your name and phone on the tape in case it gets lost,so a Good Samaritan can return it to you. If you leave it in a cab,or restaurant, the only way it’ll be returned is if u have your number or email on it. Always a good idea.

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 3 lety +1

      Not really, no rain,no swimming,you’ll be fine. They’re no fragile, there is one typical that people do that wears them out prematurely, that’s grabbing it by the pinches..
      So keep the hat upside down all the time, in the box, or on a shelf,or tabletop. That way u pick it up by the brim, not the pinches. Even when I set it down for a minute, set it upside down, you’ll be fine. The Panama I showed in my video yesterday was over 12 years old,and it still looks perfectly new…and that’s after many,many summers of wearing it, just do what I said, you’ll get a lot of years out of it.

    Great video. I love these types of videos. I am wondering what do you prefer a flat cap from Ireland or from any were else? I want to get one from Hanna hats but I want to know if I buy one off of amazon will it feel vintage?

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 3 lety +2

      We sell tons of nice caps, the Hannah stuff is extra thick and bulky, like an Irish sweater..they’re warm and wintery. Also Jonathan Richards makes some of the most elegant Irish caps around. Amazon sells everything, u can get real crap. Or u can buy a $500 Borsalino felt hat.. they sell a wide range of stuff,I don’t know about Amazon.. we have all kinds of caps,
      If I are talking about a warmer cap, then the Irish caps are the best,,the bulkiest and they last forever,
      I prefer Jonathan Richards Irish caps over Hannah personally, I think the Hannah styles are less modern, they’re a bit wide for my taste,
      If u want something lighter, then the Stetson line is gorgeous, they’re made in Europe and very stylish, we sell one called the silk and. Cashmere Ivy rom Stetson that’s probably my favorite cap of all time, it’s a lighter weight,good for many seasons, and they appear like herringbone, but they’re not wool, they’re silk and cashmere, very flowing, gorgeous looking fabric, the way it drapes and feels is just incredible, everyone who wears them loved them and goes back to buy more colors..
      www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-silk-and-cashmere-ivy (Here it is)
      I’d say that’s my favorite..made in Germany by a very,very old factory, they are just perfect..hard to capture the softness and silliness of the fabric online,but these are incredible..if u like a lighter, medium weight cap. Otherwise, I like the Jonathan Richards caps, esp the Snap Driver, it’s one of the only caps that uses a plastic visor,rather than cardboard, which extends the life of the cap..and allows u to hand wash it too, the snap driver is Irish, so it’s a heavyweight cap ,like the Hannah stuff, just more streamlined in my opinion,

    I dig the Bogarts, I got 3, ye be warned though, the blue one is almost purple, the grey one has a bluish tint, almost mauve, and the 3rd color, toast, is is pretty cool.

    • @quadrogong1111

      The grey ones were turning a little pinkish with u.v.. sunlight etc. I think we stopped ordering them. The navy ones are all different, some have a little indigo purple color, some didn’t. They were all completely different, some were deep navy, others more purple navy.. Panama straw doesn’t take dyes that well, to be honest, generally most of the colored straws are Milan or hemp, or sisol,other straws.. but u are exactly right, the BLEACHED, the NATURAL and the TOAST are on the money, no issues at all w color. The black ones were black, but not the darkest black,
      It’s tough w Panama, the dyed ones all look good at first, but they react to UV light differently, some colors fade in an odd way. I think it’s an issue with almost my colored/dyed Panama, except the toast because they use a very thin, transparent dye on the toast. Good advice, though. That’s an amazing hat, I like to stick with the natural, myself. I think they’re the nicest variety of all the bogart panamas. Thx. Kev

    Hi Kevin, very articulate and informative video, thank you...well, if I eat chocolate it will definitely by the Godiva never ever Hershey. I've thought about the Panama hat for a month and yesterday i did make the purchase of the classic by Capas but after this video I think i made the wrong decision and will exchange for either the Palermo or the Pesssaro. I've been fighting about the natural and the bleach but I must go on your recommendation, you know hats and if you can really feel the difference that's where I want to be the extra money isn't a consideration....So the question is Capri Pessaro vs Borsalino Palermo, I know the Pessaro has the brown band...the Pessaro does come in natural but I'm assuming the bleach is going to have the wonderful feeling you are speaking of....I suppose for some the tighter weave will be hotter on the head and that would be a consideration....So the Pessaro or the Palermo? Also I know the Pessaro is #8 straw what about the Palremo doesn't say on the website.

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 3 lety +1

      That grade 8 thing is created by one of the hat companies, it doesn’t mean much,,there’s no standardized system, the grade 8 bleached is very nice,soft..the grade 8 natural is not as noticeably better.. it’s nice, but not “twice the price of a Capas Classic” nice.
      The Borsalino Palermo is not the finest weave really, you’re paying more for the styling and just the quality of a Borsalino Panama,the weave is not particularly fine. But it is a gorgeous,gorgeous hat, this is tough.. the Palermo in bleached will feel very nice, expensive, soft, fine.. in natural it will look very close to the Borsalino, minus the Italian styling. It’s a tough one, Me? Personally? I’d go with the Borsalino simply because it looks gorgeous. It’s brand new stock, just left Italy recently. While the other models that are on sale have been in the basement for 3 years or so, which is why they’re half price.
      It’s so tough to say, because the quality is so similar, but there’s not a bad choice there, any of those will be very,very nice,
      (I know , I’m not helping) uh.. the Borsalino is going to have the most elegant cut and overall look. It’s like buying Armani,or Mercedes Benz, you’re getting the best designers on the planet, and it’ll look like a million dollars.
      The grade 8 stuff is super soft and fine..but only in the bleached,
      The natural or the tan colored ones will be only slightly finer than the Capas Classic Panama.
      For me, I’d go w the Borsalino if u want a really knockout,elegant natural Panama.
      If you want something that looks and feel soft, and very fine,squishy and not crunchy..go with the bleached grade 8 stuff. Especially on sale,
      it’s gonna look and feel like a $300 + weave,and last very long. The natural is nice,too. But the bleached is the standout for me.
      Those are the two I like a lot, the bleached Pessaro or the natural Borsalino. If there’s a sale now, maybe just get the Borsalino.. there’s really nothing like owning one, once u start getting compliments on it..it makes u aware of just how elegant it is.. I’d say, if u can afford to get the Borsa, it’s spectacular looking, it doesn’t have the fine, soft, squishy,feeling of a grade 8 bleached Panama…but remember, the finer the weave, the less air circulation there is, so the Borsalino will feel the coolest,lightest.. and probably look the best of all of them. I’d go Borsa if u are going natural. Unless u want to save a little money, then do the classic by Capas.
      But yeah, owning a Borsalino is like owning a Gibson Les Paul,or a gold Rolex..it’s something special that you’ll cherish for a long time,
      If you’re really looking for something special, my customers have been really happy w the Borsalino..it’s beautiful. I’d go for it, personally..especially if there’s a sale.
      They’ll disappear very quickly,and we can’t reorder them, they take a half a year to have custom made. So once we run out, that’s it. Hope this rambling rant helped!

      yes. You will absolutely LOVE it, there’s nothin, NOTHING,like a Borsalino..and when u feel that straw,the weight, the elegant styling.. it’s like you’ve got the real deal.
      If u can afford it, it’s way,way nicer. I’d always go w the bleached Borsa panamas,
      even over the 1500 monticristi finos.In my opinion, those are as nice as it gets. The 1500 natural finos aren’t as flexible or nearly as lightweight, to me I can appreciate the workmanship, but I’d take a palermo or Verona any day over one of those thousand dollar things,they’re way too hot for me, I probably shouldn’t say that, but it’s true.

    Random question is 4x wool good material

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 3 lety

      Impossible to answer that, it depends. If u mean a Stetson western? Maybe it’ll be fine, those are thick like crazy.
      but in general,I’m not a fan of wool felts unless it’s crushable litefelt, so,e of the heavy westerns from Stetson are okay, but mot nearly as good as a fur felt. Most likely it’ll be fine, but it’ll also be hard,very stiff.. and you won’t get 20-30.40 years out of it like a 100% fur felt Stetson. If you’re talking about an off brand, it can be anything, good or bad. The term “4x” means absolutely nothing, it’s marketing bullshit, wool is wool. I’d suggest going with fur felt, but if it’s a price issue..and u want to go with a wool felt western, expect it to be very stiff.

    Hey Kevin, im having some trouble getting a hat from the store. I placed an order for a hat in stock, but then got an email saying it was a way smaller size. I really could use your help man, im not sure what to do and i need your expertise. Is there a way i can get in touch with you?

      U got an email saying it was a smaller size? I’m mot sure I understand, ok, I’m not really in touch w the store that much these days, they send me a lot of customer emails and stuff, but that’s it. What u need to do it CALL.. don’t email. There’s one guy handling dozens of sales and calls and emails, Benji, and he’s got way too much on his plate,
      Just call him, and find out the deal. 800 622 1911. The holiday hours are
      Sat 7/3 : 11am - 6pm
      Sun 7/4 : Closed
      Mon 7/5 : Closed
      Tues 7/6 : 11am - 6pm
      Call them during business hours, give them 15-20 min in the morning.. so the mail order is setup, computers are on etc.. talk to Benji. He’s the nicest, most selfless person there is.. awesome person, he’s the mail order guy, you can send me emails through the store info@jjhatcenter,com and they forward it to me. or just tell me what happened here, it’s faster, I, mot sure I understood what u meant.. but yeah, don’t email, call them, there’s also a 212 number of toll free is busy, 212 239 4368
      he’s a really good guy,and works his balls off, if anything can be done, he will bust his butt to get it done and make u happy. Trust me on this. but emailing is slow,
      talk to Benji, if u have a problem, let me know. Kev

      @@quadrogong1111 ya it wasnt something they could fix, and youre right Benji is awesome. He did offer to try and resize it, but he said it is most likely too far of a stretch. They told me you dont work there anymore, and it took all the wind outa my sails man. I have to say, they did try and fix it for sure, but it really couldnt work out in my budjet. Major bummer.

      U can’t really stretch hats, it doesn’t work, that’s why I’m always saying buy stuff large and pad it down, even if u successful stretch it, they look like crap, the brim won’t lay right, the only true fix is taking it apart,and totally remanufacturing the hat in a larger size, then u lose a ton of brim size..and it’s a shorter brim. Plus it costs a bundle.
      I don’t think I can do much either, stretching is for like a quarter of a size, half a size..tiny little stretches work.,that’s it, I still work there, but I’m on hiatus, I’m still on unemployment benefits, until September. I’m planning on coming back part time in autumn if all goes well.

      Never, ever buy a hat small or even a tad small,hoping it’ll stretch on it’s own , they really don’t. Not the type with the leather sweatband inside, there’s a Reed in there that purposely stretches temporarily and then contracts, that’s it purpose, to always return the hat to the same round shape,when u crush it slightly,
      Hats don’t really stretch..and if they do manage to stretch enough, the brim will be all wonky. buy your stuff on the larger side and pad them down, get a little weather stripping, out a 5” piece under the sweatband, in back.. I use 3/8” width poly foam weather seal, Amazon or Home Depot
