- Hey house lovers and explorers!
Today we take a look through 2 very distinct but very different styles of the 50`s.
The first is a classic waterfall art deco style home at the beach and the second is a massive 1959 built home in the foothills.
Hope you all enjoy. Cheers for watching :-)
I love midcentury and art deco homes, both are my favorite styles of all times. Sad that they tore down two beautiful classic midcentury and art deco homes just to replace with boring homes. Both have so much more character than homes built now days. People think they can copy these old styles, but it just simply doesn't happen. Great video!
I agree, So sad that those places weren't just rehabbed.
I don't think that 1st house was worth saving. The lot/traffic is a huge no.
The 2nd one ...yes, it has a great lot and the house seemed in good condition overall.
I'm puzzled over using the term
'art deco' for either one of these
homes.
@@poorthing A waterfall style is considered and came about during the big "art deco" time frame and has always been considered art deco and the waterfall style is basically considered an offset of that movement. At least that is what I've read for years. I think art deco, midcentury and other styles during that time frame all just seem to have some of the same characteristic of each other. I find it sad that so many of these styles slowly faded away to more ranch and basic homes over time.
From everything I've seen, there seems to be more waterfall style homes in Australia that in other places. There are house that are close to this design, most were built by Frank Lloyd Wright many years after this style was popular. The empire state building is considered art deco too, thus the reason so many different styles are considered art deco.
I am obsessed with house #1. I have never seen a waterfall house such as that. Made me wished I lived in AUS so I could beg and plead for them to let me save it. Stunning
Very Unique for sure inkeddog :-)
We have a 1954 waterfall front home here at Grange. 🙂
I am too. There are alot of old homes in the city I live in but nothing even close to this style. Truly gorgeous.
I was going to comment just the same thing. I am obsessed with the first house. It’s heartbreaking that it’s set to be demolished.
All of the unique features and details, the original beauty, it’s so lovely. I don’t know how somebody didn’t step in to save that wonderful house. I would have loved to have gone in to salvage some is the original bits such as the vents, the light fixtures, so much beauty to that home. ❤
Too bad that house is being torn down, although the inner layout is a little funky, a few changes could make it a lot less closed in. Knock a few walls out give it a more open plan.
I live in San Antonio Texas in the United States but I'm telling you I would give just about anything to be able to afford to have a house like one of these they're gorgeous
That close to the beach, the '2nd' bathrm was probably an outdoor shower so as to not track in sand from the beach. Beautiful style.
I thought the same thing also--well pretty much, but it also had to do with swimming.
I'm pretty sure that back was larger. That included a pool and more landscaping. That mansion probably took advantage of an aging person....
That first home was so clean. Its a shame these homes are being torn down.
There is so much character in the older properties. I guess the old trees and bushes will be lost too. So sad 😔.
I was thinking the same thing..I love the really old houses..
You and some of your buddies could buy them…
@@redfishswimming you people will blow other peoples money on just about anything, won’t ya?
@@binfacelardgod1906 I agree..I love old houses..I even dream about going inside them..in the dream..the house is big..the stairs are falling down and I'm trying to get ppl to see the beauty in the house..🕊❤🦄
I love the second home. The way it sets and with the pictures you can see how the landscape looked too. Definitely 💯 my favorite!
The first home was great, the second was breath taking. Most certainly upper level of Society, love the outdoor area. Wow
I'm amazed the homes survived the vandals this long
With the cost of living and housing crisis, you would think some company or charity could fix these up for families struggling. Such beautiful homes. I always cry watching these vids. So many of us would cherish these homes. But I've also seen first hand ill health and elderly, families that abandon people, and they can't keep up maintenance of such beautiful homes.
I with you Pinky, I would cherish a home like these and even the older ones I show. Sad to see the empty lots after they are gone :-(
Sadly, due to mold or infrastructure issues/get up to code, etc... it would cost far too much to make them liveable and get your money back. It would only be if someone had the money and loved it enough to do it, but people with that kind of money can usually find something in better shape/bigger/etc
Neighborhoods change, too, from decent to crime infested or commercially developed so that no one would want to live there anymore. The traffic on the street at the first house is horrendous.
I really enjoyed the house tours. They were so unique compared to the cookie cutter stuff of today.
My heart and soul cry for these beautiful homes...
I can’t help but think about a women lovingly planting and caring for that yard. Having dinner ready as the husband comes through the door……… this is my childhood. Mom’s didn’t work, dinner was all made the old fashion way, no mixes, no shortcuts. Moms wore dresses, dads in suits, and before dinner cocktails……..kids were washed, and off to bed early. Can’t you see the black and white tv? Ed Sullivan, honeymooners, the untouchables……. Romper Room! Who remembers the magic mirror? …..” there’s Johnny, and carol……hello Betty….”
Hi Lori :-) You describe a better time which I wish I could visit :-)
I could not believe she never saw me through the magic mirror!
This was my life as a youngster!!
And blacks lived in their own area, had their drinking fountains and bathrooms. Weren't allowed to buy a home. Yeah those were good times? What is wrong with you. Whites lived well but nobody else.
Did you ever ask your mom if she was happy or had dreams of her own?
I loved the second home so much. Those huge windows stole my heart. I appreciated the real estate photos showing how beautiful this home once was. Some family must have really loved their home! The art deco waterfall is one I have never seen but I think it must have been fun & quirky in its time. Thanks so much!!
,
Great video. Thank you for sharing!!! It makes we want to cry that both houses were torn down. But I am very grateful to you that I got to see them before they "died" (my grandfather use to say that every home/house has a soul) Thanks again!
Thanks Kelly :-) I think your Grandfather was right too :-)
Gorgeous. Should be protected and preserved. Sad and shameful :( These places are our history and heritage. We are still a very young country
Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end . . . Lovely home. Thank you for sharing. I wish my mother and father were alive so I could ask them thousands of questions about life back in the day. 🥰 *Rest in Peace, Mom and Dad. I love you so much.*
Cheers Holley :-) And you are welcome :-)
The Art Deco home is adorable. I admit I have a soft spot for curved walls and windows. The living room is lovely with the curved bay. The real show stopper for me was the vent cover. It has wee birds! Be still my heart. The second home has such a wonderful front garden. I used to not appreciate Mid Century homes but I have a great fondness for them now and this one is a gem. I love that they left the kitchen unrenovated. I just cry when I see an old home with a brand new kitchen. Then there is the bathroom. Wow. Sad to see the ugly things going in, in it's place. Thank you again Paul. Waving from Maine.
Hi Susan! :-) Glad you love the little details like the bird vents, these homes always deliver a few unique quirks and retro features. Yeah I think Mid century is now becoming more vintage as we see more ugly new boxes! lol. Thanks for watching :-)
I was going to comment but I think you said everything I wanted to say lol! I agree with your whole comment 100%.
@@JamieM470 my grandma lived in a brick house with a basement that was built in 1961 on a road with other houses from the same time. I would always imagine what the insides of the other homes on the street might look like, as they likely all have different designs to suit either a bigger front room, bigger kitchen, or more or bigger bedrooms. But alas the EXACT same homes in that neighborhood are being sold for so much more money now that no one can afford to buy them, even despite the homes being decades older now and crime and development in the area having gone up exponentially.
The saddest thing for me is that I looked on a map for homes that might be for sale in that area (which by the way are being sold for $400-$500k when my grandparents got theirs NEW for $24k in 1961), but all of the ones for sale on the map the insides are all "updated" with black or stainless steel appliances, newish looking cabinets and doors, and walls painted gray which I hate 😥 Pretty much all of the 50s style seemed to be gone from them all, including even the most basic of things. That broke my heart because I knew that whoever came into posession of those homes had only done things to make them look more modern so that they could try to justify charging $500k for a house that sold for $24k when it was BRAND NEW. But I love the classic old look of homes that were built during that time, and I would love even more the fact that such a house would likely need to be far less expensive if it had not been updated. But it seems these days that all anyone cares about is money, and it means they are perfectly willing to destroy a vintage house if they think they can sell the house four more money than they would by leaving it the way it is. Which is just sad 😞
@@wrestlerx8494 I agree, it's very sad. Real estate experts say that young people buying homes want everything primer-white (including beautiful woodwork) and modern. So that's why re-sellers "update" everything (and destroy the character).
Even worse, thousands of unique & special older homes are being bought by corporations all over the country...they just demolish them & build hideously ugly apartments or neighborhoods of cheaply-built houses that are so identical the only way you can tell them apart is the address numbers.
Makes my stomach hurt. I would love to own a vintage home with actual craftsmanship & unique little touches like bird vent covers.
@@wrestlerx8494
24k in 1961, is how much in today's dollars?
G'day Paul thank you for showing these beautiful timeless homes its so sad that these homes have to be demolish to make way for modern homes that look like blocks that cemented into the ground
Oh, I hope the let some architecture salvage people in before they're demolished. The vents, and bow windows. The chevron wood floor. Beautiful 😍
Nothing lovelier than the old waterfall homes expect maybe one of those old farmhouses all the way out there 😊❤❤❤
So glad you enjoyed LBET :-) Cheers for watching
love the kitchen and bathroom in the second house. That pink and blue is beautiful.
Two beautiful old homes but I like the second home more than the first. The blue kitchen was awesome and the bathroom too. It's a shame these homes are gone for ever. Thanks for the video and greetings from Germany🙂
I liked the look of the outside of the waterfall home, but I loved the 50’s house with all the windows and the large rooms. Nice brick on the exterior too. While I love all those huge windows, I’m afraid I wouldn’t feel safe since they do provide easy access to the house for burglars. Thanks for the tours!
The second home omg!! Dream kitchen! The old bathroom 😱! I could've lived there easily.
🌟Lovely classic homes soon to be gone forever ♾ the paint colour on the exterior of the first home is textured paint they add baking soda to give it the textured look. I agree it was cosy and quirky very stylish I could live there quite happily beautiful real estate photos. Thank you so much again 😊❤🌟x :-)
Hi Megan, thanks heaps for watching. Glad you enjoyed. Interesting to know about the baking soda technique! :-)
Love the round windows of the 1st house, you're right it looks cosy.
2nd WOW...Love outside, that kitchen YES PLEASE.
Nice terraced backyard.
The realestate pics
Wowwww
How authentic the kitchen and bathroom was in the second late 1950s home. This spacious home appeared to be well cared for. Interestingly unique explores of two different style homes.
Cheers for watching Julz! :-)
I love old homes, I think I was born at the wrong time. I would love to know how to fix them and maybe do the work on my own home. I watch a few channels that ppl are doing repairs themselves. Just lovely.
I love the windows in this house, so big letting in lots of lights.
beautiful blue kitchen
The second was my favorite, loved the bathroom tiles, huge windows and that amazing backyard
It's so sad to see such beautiful homes abandoned and being torn down, and even sadder still to see the rubbish that's slated to replace them. The craftmanship, materials and attention to detail would have so been worth it to renovate them.
No such thing as craftsmanship anymore. Slap them up and collect the cash. No pride anymore.
My favorite was the second house it makes me sick to them vandalized, thank you for showing the pictures of the the day's before,I collect antique everything except furniture I have antique bowls, butter molds ,rollers, churns, utensils and my bed is antique.
Glad you enjoyed it Nita May :-) I like collecting old things/antiques too :-)
Looks like someone was trying to show some love to that house by trying to fix it up..kitchen etc... Someone's nice old place, filled with memories n love!!! Neat, bless em!!
Love the first home perfect for me ashame that wont let low incoome people as myself move into them and restore them
These houses are younger than mine but omg, that 1st one! I'm in love with so much of it. The 2nd I really liked the blue in the kitchen and bathroom, the wood floor, and that backyard..multi level. Wow!!! What a shame to tear them down. 😢
Loved the parquet floor in the waterfall house.
Love the second house with all the greenery outside. The pastel tiles in "her" bathroom seem very 70s/80s to me, though. LOL! They've must've been all the rage in interior design back then, I imagine! LOL!
What a treat-I loved both homes!
Never heard of that "waterfall house" term before thanks for sharing :). Must have been beautiful in its time.
I love the waterfall art deco house! you're so right, it's cozy, just the right size!
Hi Paul. Two exceptionally nice finds. The first one was so different than anything I've seen before. Absolutely loved the second one. Breaks my heart it got replaced by those ugly space looking things. Thank you again for sharing and thank you Helen. Til next time take care.
Hi Cynthia :-) Glad you enjoyed these homes. Thanks for watching
Hi Cynthia I totally agree with you beautiful classics being replaced with ugly boxes yuck
I absolutely love art deco curved glass windows .
I live in a leafy village in uk , a small block of flats are true art deco , protected and stunning
Hi Paul I agree there - I love the curved bay windows too !! Very elegant they would hv looked back in the day ! Distinctive
Loved the houses, but I must admit my favourite was the 2nd one. The kitchen did it for me.
The parquet floors are gorgeous!
If I could I would save them! So cool
Love the two houses. The second house is wonderful. I love the back yard and the terrace leading to the original garage.
I absolutely love looking at old homes, but this is heartbreaking to see. 💔
2nd house. OM, in it's glory days would have been beautiful! Thanks
Never thought I'd see a parquet floor that I liked (too busy), but the flooring in that first house is gorgeous!
First home had a lot to offer & was clearly a purpose-deigned villa style. very period. The second had the hard to achieve feel of space and light. Back when they didnt crowd you into a shoebox.Used the elevations well, you see that technique in the Hollywood hills. Makes me envious of the old owner to have a retreat like that from the world. Two more recorded for posterity.
The outdoor shower was great for coming hone from the beach
I love the first home x
It’s beautiful. How are you doing x?
I'd love that waterfall home. So beautiful.
Stunning! Thank you.
Loved the floors, pocket door and hardware in the first house.
Hello 👋 how’re you doing?
Greetings Paul, I agree with you I like the home too, very cozy and must have been a beauty in her day 😊
That second house it gorgeous. My lawd Jessica.
Love the art deco house.
THX love the 2nd home, sad the homes will be lost! thx for the post!!!
So happy I found your CZcams account, I live in South Africa, and so many homes in my little city are also being torn down and replaced with dull new builds, I love all the crafted old features as well. I think these houses can still be modernised to a very exclusive standard without them losing all their character, can't wait to binge watch all your vids.
Same here his channel are so interesting. Hi Joanne how are you doing with your family i do hope you are well?
What a amazing old home, I’d love to live in that.
My parents had the same coating on the their old farm house. It is sprayed on over the walls. And that was done in the late 70’s that spray rendering was done.
Thanks for the wonderful tour, lovely homes!
I'm not even ten minutes in yet and I absolutely LOVE this home! I want to live there!!!
I'd totally live in the second house too! I LOVE that kitchen! The crown moulding was fantastic!
Cheers for watching Kim! :-)
I love this house and yard!! Viewed it more than once.
Could you only imagine at Christmas time stockings hung on the mantle big beautiful magnificent Christmas tree in front of those that window plenty of decorations to take up that whole big beautiful window and honestly I wouldn't do a whole lot to it if I had it make sure the electrical and plumbing is fine redo the floors and the doorways of course paint the walls there's things that I wouldn't remove I love those kitchen cabinets I'm not a fan of blue paint but you can always send them and repaint them another color but I love the way they are
the second bathroom, outdoors, in the First House was used after going to the beach. It was a place to rinse off sand and sea water without bring it into the house, that's why there is a utility sink instead of a vanity sink
I wonder does anyone get to go in and salvage anything? The flooring, appliances, wall sconces, etc. How so very COOL!
Yes they do but sometimes I have seen very beautiful interiors and furniture destroyed in the demolition. Cheers for watching phughesphoto :-)
@@urbexindigo5164 Great video but sad at the same time . . . I hate seeing homes with potential that are going to be destroyed! 😢
Greetings from The Bahamas 🇧🇸
I live in a 1946 home, built on a hillside, not many hills here.
My fave style is West Indies colonial.
We really are all…just dust in the wind. Such beautiful homes.
It would be so lovely to see homes like this restored and fixed with modern amenities. They would be so unique and interesting. It is a shame that developers don't see the potential that these homes have.
I really like both homes, the first kitchen was nice and clean, very pretty, the second kitchen was very spacious it has enough room for everything, mixer, bread machine etc.I really like pocket doors, hardwood floors, fireplaces.Another great video thank you.👍❤️🇺🇸
I love this old house 🌹❤️
Quite stunning, both different, but beautiful in their own way, I would love to have lived in both.
Amazing houses! So precious, but I guess developers' big money is more important. I LOVED your pictures showing how the rooms must have looked when new in the second house. Pure beauty! Thank you so much!
It’s a beautiful art deco house, just imagine it if it was brought back to it’s original style it would be amazing
Such a beautiful blue kitchen & bathroom!!
Love the waterfall house
I love that second house so much!
I love the kitchen in the second home. It was so pretty and spacious.
Hello 👋how’re you doing?
I started watching this in the morning and finally get to finish it!!!! These places were amazing, so pretty and eclectic. I would have salvaged the birds of paradise from the garden in the first one!!! thanks Mr indigo!!
Glad you enjoyed it Heather :-) Cheers for watching.
I'm so retro, love these homes...=)
I enjoy seeing photos of the house in it’s original condition. Sad to know it’s being torn down but it looks like the area will house many more people in the future and that’s never a bad thing!! ☀️
Thanks for documenting these old gems 💎!!
Very cool!! I love how you see the beauty in the decay, as well
love the large windows in the second house was a beautiful home
The windows are actually nice. Hi Kim how are you doing with your family i do hope you’re safe from the Covid?
Both homes are fabulous but i really like the first one for its style, wonderful woods and feeling of a home. I also like the second one but for completely different reasons. The space and the windows, the amazing yard plants and the kitchen cupboards. The pain colors that remain, the style of the doors. All in all a wonderful showing of fantastic old homes, thank you.
Thank you so much Paula, glad you enjoyed :-)
So dad to see such a lovely home become a string of box homes.
Loved these houses, the 1st ones Bay windows, Yet 2nd was my favorite, the original garage area with the upper terrace, yard, The extra large windows.❤🌹
I actually shed a few tears while watching this video. The smashed blue sink did it for me. It was a visceral reaction that I had. My, how beautiful that house must have been! Seeing pictures of it in better times was wonderful but I wonder what it would have looked like in person in its glory. I wonder what it's selling for now?
Thank you for the tour of two beautiful homes.
As a gardener…that second house though😍😍😍😍😍
This house is so cool..i like the layout of it...the stain glass window really fits the location..just a cool home!!!
The second house had an amazing piece of property with it. Love all the foliage and the view
2nd house , view through the picture window in the formal living room it's amazing. I can imagine what it was like when it was well taken care of. Thx, this was excellent.
Loved both of the homes for different reasons.
Both homes are beautiful! I'll take the 2nd please!
My parents bought there first home in 1951 in Northern Virginia, New built 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, 900 sq ft. Those small room were normal for middle class houses. I moved to Florida in 1970 and rember that a lot of houses still didn't have air-conditioning, we are very spoiled.
2nd house
Was that Star of David etched on the pocket door glass panel?
Star of David aka Hebrew Star, or Magen David (Shield of David)
2 triangles set on top to form 6 sided star, a hexagram.
This was a spacious home, beautiful lot,
Large windows.
Wonderful to see the 'new' photos, the kitchen drapes are still there!
I'd loved to have lived there.
Beautiful
House 1. "...demolition fence is up...." Aw, that sucks. This house would be so nice fixed up. I love the symmetry in front.
House 2. real estate photos aren't from the 1950's; they're from the 2000's. This house was once loved, and kept nice. Makes me wonder what happened.
Hi. That first house was really clean. I'd never heard of a Waterfall style home. It was pretty. The 2nd home is beautiful with the dark rich hardwood floors and huge picture windows.
Oh ok same here. How are you doing?
