Good lessons. If I'm practicing instrument approaches in VMC (instrument rated) I'll always have a second qualified person in the co-pilot seat just to keep an eye out for traffic and obstacles while my head is in the instruments.
Also QADCAPS is a fairly standard abbreviation before starting a instrument descent, it includes QNH set, Aids tuned and identified, descent profile determined, chart brief, audio if using NDB is on, pre landing checks, speed within landing limits.
