October is the best time to go crabbing in Oregon. Today we went to set our crab traps in the ocean and we pulled up some giant crabs. I'll show you how to clean crab, and do a quick crab boil.
The following is an affiliate link which help me continue to make videos for my channel.

Great video PK…awesome that you and Lynn have been fishing together for so long!! Great friendship and memories
Nice job!
great vid! I would love to have half dozen with garlic butter and wild grain rice. Thanks so much.
Great video !
PK, great video as usual! I loved the aerial and underwater shots. Delicious boil. Sorry you got sick on our account. Hope you recover quickly. Hi, Len! Tight lines, dudes!
Thank you my brother, love seeing you rep the PNW.
The Crack & Crab is starting to be seen a lot here in Calif. Great tool!! I removed the lip on my crab bucket and sharpened it a bit and use it the same way. You can put in some water to rinse too or just put in a trash bag to make it into a crack & trash. The Crack & Crab is really convenient.
Another award winning PK video. Thanks for the catch and cook.
PK i’ve been a fan of your channel for quite some time now I would love to be your crabbing buddy this fall yeah Awesome!!!
If our schedule align, sure.
Thanks for all the great content PK.
Yay my fav vids. Gettin comfy!
Always a great video from you that I really enjoy. Soft shell crab in the east is a delicacy so I wonder why you throw them back. Thanks. Cheers, Colin.
soft shell dungeness crabs contain less meat than the hard shell crabs. when the crabs molt and shed their hard shells the meat/muscle tissue is used to build up a new hard shell so the goal is to catch the crabs just before they molt. we toss them back so they can continue to grow and because soft shells that have just molted really aren't worth eating unless you are starving.
Great vid Pk! Love the underwater and drone footage! You asked if we would keep the one with the dark colored back, I would. Also I would have kept the softshell ones also. Even though not packed with meat, it comes out of the shell easier. When you do a crab boil, cut the soft tissue at the joints. Its a little more prep time, but allows the seasoning to get into the meat.
I'm going to the OBX, NC tomorrow, for a few days, then onto the florida keys for a few weeks. It's a whole different world down there. Still windy af, but its in the 80s in the day and 70s at night...my back and joints are gonna love it. Tight lines😎
Thanks, Roland. Will try that next time. Tight lines!
Next crab boil, use some garlic, cut up lemon, and crab boil. Bring to boil than add whole small red potatos, let boil ten minutes than add corn on cob cut in three pieces, add whole mushrooms and smoked sausage cut in one inch pieces, boil for five minutes than add crab pieces, cook for five minutes than turn off fire and let everything set for twenty minutes to soak up the spices. That's how they do it in the bayou.
Hi PK. Thanks. Awesome show. I used to fish north of PR on the south side of the Abyss. Usually 1300’ of water under the keel. Yellow fin tuna and wahoo and Mahi also the occasional tiger shark. It’s usually 3’-6’ seas around the Virgin islands. I get sea sick sometimes also. I now live in Colorado. Missing the ocean everyday.
Always a good time watching you and Lynn (sp?) sharing a boat, whether fishing or crabbing. Those look delish.
Yup, Lynn. We been fishing together for a long time.
I enjoy your crab catch and cook videos. Btw awesome underwater camera stuff
Scopolamine patches work wonders for seasickness. I can't even look at ocean without getting sick and spent 8 hours in heavy swells no problem.
Will check that out. Thanks.
@Michelle Bryant scopolamine is magic. Please try it. Worth every $.
You teased us for a little about moving to Cali! Haha can’t blame you though! Looks amazing out there
It's hard to be away from Oregon for too long. Even though I live in Stockton now, I still go there pretty often.
Welcome home, PK... HAPPY HALLOWEEN! ~Mikio 💚
PLEASE FIX THE SOUND AND TURN UP THE VOLUME. I LOVE WATCHING YOUR SHOW!
PK, How big's your boat? I'm either getting a new motor for my Smokercraft Alaskan 14, or a nice fishing kayak. Not looking to go anywhere in open ocean (I've been a bluewater sailor most of my life), just protected waters. With your crab boils tho...I'm missing the garlic butter & champagne🙂
my older brother is mover out there in 2020
Only thing missing is a beer!!!.... 🍺🍺🦀🦀👍
yum what time is lunch
Love your crabbing videos PK! Any word on crabbing from the shore recently? Unfortunately I don't have a boat!
Shore crabbing is still good. Go to Siletz Bay. I did a video on it: czcams.com/video/TMmPLq5mErQ/video.html . Good luck.
Great video...!! I always wondered why the crabbers on The Deadliest Catch never did something like this ??? or use a sub / camera to find the crabs...?????
Catch and cook in one video....sub'd
Hello PK, after you use the immersion blender add some heavy cream and all the crab meat then you would have a Crab Bisque, man wish I was there. Have a wonderful weekend, take care and God bless you and your Family always. 🇺🇸☕️🍽👼🏻👼🏻
Man, that sounds really good. Thanks for the tip.
PK welcome
Good stuff, PK. Good to see you in open ocean more. But 2 1/2 hours and you’re sick? Come on, man. :)
Mike from Pasadena
keep in mind he's sitting in a 15 foot lund in a northwest ocean swell, it can be a very unpleasant experience even for a very experienced sailor.
Awesome, just got my Promar blue round pots like yours. Can you send me a link to your video that shows how to freeze and preserve crab.
Thanks!
Sitting here eating a big bowl of Tom Kha I made...watching this makes me think some Tom Kha Pu would be awful good!
Edit: So..umm..fresh squeezed troll tears? Gotta be a story there...
Ooo it so would. I made tom kha last week. I was on a liquid diet forn4 days and lived on the broth. Soooooo yummy
PK, where do I buy the CRACK'N CRAB CLEANER AND GAUGE, with the (pool noodle) attachment?
tealcrab.com/
Between all the different kinds of things you've used to catch crab, traditional crab pots to the Crab Hawk, what are things you'd recommend newbies focus on when buying their first crab pots? Price not necessarily being an issue.
Hard to say, it depends on where you crab. Most pots you buy are fairly light, so weighing it down is a good idea. There is always a swift tide current in bays in Oregon, so I would add about an extra 3 pounds for the pots. Also, make sure they are vinyl coated to help with corrosion protection. I'm liking the conical traps more and more since they have very little setup time. Good luck.
Everything good with that PON PON?
wHY ARE SOFT SHELLS NO GOOD?
They have just molted and are not full of meat yet.
But in the east they’re a delicacy that I cannot get enough of. Egg and breadcrumb the whole, cleaned, beast then pan fried until golden brown. Yowza.
@@protocolofficer2629 totally different species of crab in the east. i'd love to watch an easterner consume a dungeness crab the way you guys do it, that would be fun to watch.
Is it Heavy?
Great catch! What's wrong with softshell?
They’ve molted recently and haven’t filled back up their meat yet. Their leg shells are spongy.
PK, I’m new to crabbing and I live about 1 hour 30 minutes from Coos Bay. When I go crabbing I want to keep the crab alive until I get home and cook them. Can I keep them in an aerated cooler until I get home, do I have to clean them when they’re alive at the coast and put the meat on ice, or cook all of them at the coast? Everyone has their own opinion on how to do it and I’d like to hear your view on it. Thanks a lot.
Keeping them in aerated cooler would be good until you get home. Some people clean them at the coast and put them on ice. Both works. For me, I just put them in my cooler without water, then cover them completely with soaking wet paper towels. You can cover them completely with paper towels first, then pour water on the towels until they are all wet and soaked with water (fresh or saltwater, don't mater).
The moisture from the paper towels keeps them alive for hours - never failed me yet. Just leave the lid slightly open for ventilation. Cheers.
PK Thank you!
Where was the emergency call?
Coosebay or Newport
Newport
All you need is a small grill for some ribeye steaks.
Are soft shells illegal or not good eating?
They have very little meat so most people tend to throw them back. They're perfectly legal as long as they are male and are 5-3/4" across the shell.
2nd time i see this video
which port do you leave from ?
Newport Marina boat ramp.
Hey PK, where are you fishing out of, I know you like fishing out of Coos Bay?
Newport, Oregon.
@@oregonlife I was there yesterday bay crabbing and it was very dismal, there are allot of male crabs, but very small. I have heard reports up and down the coast on how crabbing this year is very poor on the bays. We walked away with 4 keeper crabs. :>(
@@flexk9996 Crabbing this year has been really lousy in Oregon. Luckily you got 4 keepers.
@@oregonlife Unfortunately it took me 7hrs, 3 pots and 3 rings to get those 4 barely legal crabs. LOL Not a great year in the bays.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
PK, I have never been crabbing, let alone on a boat. Will you take me on one trip? I would love the experience.
So you shake the fat out?
because of past industrial activity and water pollution it is not considered healthy to consume the fat or liver/tomalley of crabs here in the pnw so most people clean their crabs before cooking and shake/rinse the leg clusters. for the same reason it's not a good idea to fish for anything in ports with shipyards, lumber mills or copper smelters.... but, some people still do.
Man, I hate hearing that pan-pan call.
PK, a guy who is over a thousand miles from the ocean but used to live in Vancouver, BC could very easily hate you.
First victim hhhhhh.
Great video!
