    Found this video while looking up how to disconnect the hub from the axle, since I need to replace my outer axle boot. Great step-by-step (credit to the cameraman too) and unlike most of the other videos I found, you clearly show what you're doing and don't suddenly cut to the job being nearly done.       @@SimplerKitchen Yep, we figure too much information is always better than too little. I tell people we gear our videos to the absolute beginner so everyone can be successful using our videos as a tutorial rather than just the experienced DIYers or paid mechanics being able to figure out the details we left out. I also tell people nobody is holding a gun to their head forcing them to watch the whole thing. Fast forward to the parts you need clarification on and skip the rest. It's pretty easy but some people just love to criticize, and that's just part of being CZcamsrs having to deal with those people. Some people are just straight up A-holes and those people get blocked from our channel. Luckily, the heavy majority that comment are positive and respectful. We appreciate people like yourself.     Your videos are Exceptional for many reasons but the fact that you get into & explain each & every particular detail, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant is priceless.
    As well as providing options for those viewers that don't have the experience, level of expertise or Especially those that don't have that one particular & usually expensive "Special" tool. "What are the options for removal if you don't have the ( $200 ) factory Toyota tool ? " As well as what to watch out for if you DO use this un-recomended / unconventional technique.
    "Make sure Not to crush the oil seal under the ... Whatever !" for example.
    Most importantly ... I appreciate the fact that you take very special care to place your camera in Great spot -w- plenty of light so we can see everything your doing.
    The Biggest problem for most Car Repair pimp's on CZcams like yourself ( a Yuge compliment btw ) is that they assume or simply overlook the fact that their audience might not understand the terminology or take for granted the certain way "things are done".
    I am quite experienced. Particularly with high-performance Motorcycles so cars are relatively straight forward. But without a doubt ... Many of the biggest roadblocks I consistently experience myself tend to be the some of the smallest & seemingly insignificant details that end up causing the Greatest delays & most confusion. For example ... The direction & precise location of an oil seal or bracket. Which tool will work the best. What you do when something is stuck or slightly damaged. etc ...
    You are needed more than ever with our ever increasing prices in EVERYTHING but especially in our New "Bidenomics" World of insanely priced New cars are for ing the prices of used cars & repairs & Everything much higher. Forcing many of us to do it ourselves.
    So you are playing a much Bigger part than you know.

    I have used the slide hammer and hook to get the axle out, I just had to put my hand in there and hold the claw tight to that lip on the axle while using my other hand to slide the hammer. It usually takes me about 5 or 6 good whacks but I have found it to be the easiest way for me since I can just sit on a little shop stool and do it from outside the car versus laying down and trying to pound it out

      Yeah slide hammer method is definitely a pretty solid option. Pry bar underneath though also works pretty well, but works best with an extra set of hands holding the cv axle level with the ground.

I would appreciate more GX 470 videos for non suspension or bumper related issues. Also, do you have the spec for the seal on the back part of the wheel around the axle shaft?

We are actually going to release a seal replacement video in the next day or so which gives you guidance on install, the part numbers and shows the audience a cool tool to drive the seals in made by WITS END.

    As always great job, Timmy. Was doing my axle seal job on my 3rd gen Sunday (using your part 2 video as my guide, buddy let me try and tackle this mostly myself so only one side took me 8 hours including the brake shoes, next side should go MUCH quicker though) when I realized one of my boots is half torn at the out end of the inner boot. It's not leaking yet and was only showing at full droop up on my buddy's lift. So now I will be using another one of your videos for another major needed repair. Also going to do the OTRE on that side while I'm at it as that boot is going bad on me (which means I can give that part some act right with a hammer instead of using the puller since I don't need to save it). This whole job looks SIGNIFICANTLY easier than the seal though, I'm stoked to get it done and I can do it all at home once I go grab some more tools that I will need anyway for all sorts of jobs.

    Great video as usual! Just an FYI, I was told by a tire shop owner to NEVER use power tools with a wheel lock. They’re too fragile and will break, so always use hand tools.

      Glad you like the video. That's interesting you mentioned that about the wheel locks become Thanh mentioned that to me the other day when we filmed a brake upgrade on his GX470. I've been using an impact on wheel locks for the last 5 years or so and never had an issue. But, maybe I'll start breaking free the locks with a breaker bar instead just to play it safe.

    Too late! Stripped! Glad to find out that I'm not the only one with diff plug issues. Two other tips: brass hammer might help prep the plug. I'm going to go with an air hammer for my next try. Then out comes the heat (maybe).

      Thanh's GX470 is a 2008. There shouldn't be any difference between the 2006 and 2008 in regards to the CV axles.

    Hi Timmy, sic cv replacement man! Thanks for helping all the regular joes out there in the inter webs. So did I miss it, or was the sway bar removed before the install? Using your vids as the how-to, I replaced my inner axel seals (Witt’s End rocks) and had to disconnect the sway bar from the spindle to make room to get at the CV. I used C4rs cv sling to pull them, it worked well for me.
    Keep rocking the vids, even if I don’t need a specific topic, I watch them as there’s so much to learn.

      Hey Mike, everything we did to get the CVs out was shown in the video. I don't remember having to disconnect the sway bar but maybe we did. We usually do a complete job of showing everything necessary.
      Glad our videos are helping you out. Yeah, the Wits End tool does rock. I love that seal installation tool. That's one of my all-time favorite custom tools, because I know what a pain in the ass the seal insertion is without it.

      @@l33america Yes sir. i did get them installed. I called my local toyota dealership and ordered the exact part # listed here. They had it in the next morning. It went into my 07' GX just fine. admittedly there was a moment of doubt as i sat there pounding on the damn thing w/ a pry bar and my plastic mallet. In that moment i decided to upgrade to a 3lb hammer and it went right in :)

      @@l33america not lifted, i did a whole suspension refresh along w/ this axle install. upper/lower control arms, springs. shocks, links, bearings, hubs, rotors, brakes. all new front suspension. All oem, so it's basically driving like new again :) i mostly tow a travel trailer and daily drive this thing so a lift isn't going to do me any justice, the adjustable oem suspension however makes towing quite enjoyable.

    any updates from the customer on how the GX460/4runner CV Axles are holding up for his GX470? is it 100% interchangeable? Im reading from some forums that more ribs on the boot might cause more friction and tear more easily. While others say more ribs on the boot allow it to stretch out more and tear less easily

      Everything is good with Thanh's CV axles. By the way, he's not a customer, he's my friend. If the ribs are rubbing because of an increased angle due to a suspension lift, the boots can tear from the friction. Some people go with aftermarket silicone boots that can be stretched out further on the shaft to spread the ribs out further so they don't rub. Some do a boot stretch mod with their OEM boots.     I like to wrap a ratchet strap around the inner joint and use a small sledge to whack on the strap to pop it free of the diff. I've heard of people using dog leashes too!

Hey, where can I get a service manual for a 2015 Toyota Sienna… Either from Toyota or a secondary provide? Secondly, can you recommend a brake grease for my Sienna? The local dealer told me they cannot sell me their Toyota approved grease oil. I have try one from a local parts store without much luck. Thanks for you help in advance!

      At some point, Toyota stopped making the physical factory service manual books. It's all digital. I know they stopped well before 2015. What I do is buy 2-day memberships to the Toyota Tech Info website for $25. I can download as much as I want over that 48 hour period.

Then, not too long ago, some guy told me he has no problem accessing that site with his macbook computer. Kind of weird. Anyway, that's how you can access the FSM info you need.
      As for brake caliper grease, I use what you can buy at any auto parts store. It's made by CRC. amzn.to/2OMFPoG

    Hi Timmy - Thanks for all your helpful videos. I am busy rebuilding the front end of my 2008 FJ Cruiser, and I had a question regarding the grease used on the wheel side of the CV Axle where it meets the steering knuckle oil seal. What grease do you recommend using, and how liberally should I pack that knuckle cavity? That said, I replaced the oil seals, and a little grease was applied to the rubber portions of the seals by the shop that did the job.

      The knuckle doesn't need to be packed with grease. Just grease the CV axle splines a little with a multipurpose grease and grease the area where the dust seal rides with some grease and assemble.

      I usually don't recommend anyone buy CV axles from parts stores. OEM is the better way to go. The only ones I've heard decent reviews about is the Napa Auto Parts axles.

      RCV are bomber, but they are also crazy expensive. I guess if you wheel hard and regularly break axles, RCVs might be the way to go. I'm guessing most people that offroad their GX470s aren't going to wheel them hard enough to be breaking axles all the time.

    Interesting and informative. There are so very many tips in this and all your vids, very many thanks. Am just getting into pulling out the front drive shafts on my ’93 Toyota 4x4 (7 and a half inch front diff) as I’ve a split boot one side and will do the other at the same time as it’s a bit poor (everything is original and ~30y old). Unlikely to replace the shafts themselves (part-time 4x4 with AISIN hubs) but will also do the inner seals. On my van the fill and drain washers are the same part. Worth noting it’s possible to get a 10-part kit of crush washers. The part number is (unsurprisingly) ‘12157-10010-10’ and I think it’s handy to have the spares. Glad I’ve got the other diff fill and drain plus that have 24mm hex socket (all 8 on my van). My oil seals also seem to be the same on each side, which is nice. Like the comment on having the C clip opening down. Agree with the cotter-pin comments. Now need to go and re-watch your driveshaft reboot video. Cheers.

      We do it all the time. The jack stands I use are rated for 6 tons. There's been many jobs I've done where we have all 4 wheels off the ground. So now instead of 4 jack stands, you're saying I should now have 8. I understand the benefits of redundancy but now I'd have less room to work with all the extra jack stands in the way. A jack stand failure is beyond rare. It would be like getting struck by lightning or winning the lottery. The times people are really risking their lives is when they rely solely on a small bottle jack or other hydraulic jack to hold their vehicle up. Now that is dangerous and foolish. Jack stands were made for safety. So, I appreciate your concern for our safety, but we are being safe by using jack stands. That what they were made for.

      @@dc5723 CV axles are pretty easy to remove so it's not a huge deal to me. For bigger and more involved jobs like a timing belt job, I'll replace all the seals I can while I'm in there.

    Interesting that Toyota Parts is selling their own reman axles now. Do they have these for the FJC and 4R’s yet? Last time I looked at replacing my factory ones in my FJC you would be around the $7-800 range.

    Hey Tim! I noticed that the part numbers for the axles you used are 4Runner / FJ Cruiser parts. The Lexus part number is 43430-60061 and covers 2003-2009 GX470s. Are the Toyota parts the same? They're $100 cheaper brand new!

      Thanh did research and said the axles he used were supposedly better. Toyota and Lexus parts are quite often interchangeable. The axles we used in video worked fine, so they should work for you as well.

      I would assume so but I can't say for sure. It wouldn't make sense for Lexus to change the axles for the a different year of the same model.

    What I should have said was as extra precaution I always push the wheel I have taken off under the vehicle so the car can't flatten you if it wobbles off balance.

      Yeah, I've shoved the wheel under the rig before as well. But, I've gotten to the point that I believe if a jack stand actually failed with me under the vehicle, it was divine intervention, because it is so rare, it would have to be a miracle. I take more risks driving in traffic everyday and riding my mountain bike.

    Hey Timmy I have a question I test drove a 05 gx470 and when I tried to use the 4wd I went from neutral in the trans and shifted to N in the transaxle and tried going into Lo but it was grinding then I tried going back to Hi and its also grinding is that normal ?

      I've had that happen to me in my 3rd Gen 4runner. If you make the shift faster, it will grind less. It also makes a difference if the engine is cold and the idle is high. When the idle is normal, it will grind less.

    Would the better inner boot you mention be something that average Toyota parts guy would not know about, therefore not having the part# you mention in this video???

      You don’t have to if you lift that side of the vehicle up high enough to give it enough angle not to leak. But leave it level, and you will have gear oil spill out. If you haven’t replaced your gear oil in a long time, this would be a good time to do it.

    How long do you heat it each time?

      I'd say between 10-15 seconds each time. I probably used a bit more heat on the first round. You just keep heating it up and trying to break it free until it pops free fairly easily with a 12 inch ratchet or breaker bar. If you go to a longer ratchet or breaker bar, that's a ton of leverage and when you apply force to it, you have a decent chance of stripping it. So, you just have to be careful and use your best judgment. If you strip it, now you've created more work for yourself.

      The wheel nut, ball joint and the lower 2 knuckle bolts are all that has to come off. Whole unit pulls off the axel and you have plenty of room to knock out the inner part of the axel. I am a complete noob at mechanic work. Love you videos! Did one your way and then did one the other one the other way and it was much easier not taking out the other things.@@TimmyTheToolman

I always prefer to get the outer tie rod disconnected from the knuckle to have plenty of room to work. I also like to avoid tugging on things like ABS sensors so I don't damage them because they are very expensive to replace. By the way, the method we showed came straight out of the Toyota factory service manual. Sometimes there's ways to cut corners like you've found in other videos and that's great if it works. I just don't appreciate the initial comment you made. It's 100% negative toward our efforts to help people. What I know is if people follow our tutorial, they will be 100% successful. If it means they possibly disconnected more than they needed because there was another way it could be done, that's not a concern of mine. We showed them how to get the job done based off the Toyota FSM instructions. As far as I'm concerned, we did our job and did it well. I have no problem receiving constructive criticism if the delivery is respectful. Instead of just saying what you said, you could have said it something like: "Hey Tim, great video. I did however find you can actually get the CV axle out without having to disconnect the outer tie rod or disconnect the ABS sensor." Do you see how that comment would be better received by me than your original comment which basically shit all over our hard work? From your picture, you're not exactly a young dude. I shouldn't really need to explain "Tact" to you when speaking with people, but your first comment lacked tact in a big way. So Matt, I hope you learned something from this exchange. We put a lot of effort into our videos all in the name of helping people. When people come at us like you did, it's never received well.

      WOW. You got some thin skin. My initial comment was very simple observation to let the VIEWERS know there were other methods to seek out if they wanted to do the job "easier". How the hell did I say anything rude? Did not even mention your name. Even gave you a thumbs up. WOW. You need a reality check. You are not the best mechanic on the internet buddy.     Hi When I look that part number up 43430-60082-84 on line its for a later model 4runner or a GX460 will it still fit a GX470?
