It's hard to balance great tone and power in your singing... Especially when you're trying to hit notes you may be uncomfortable hitting!
Well, a quick study of Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme will help you attain both great tone and power balances!
Josh does a fantastic job making notes and phrasing count. And he uses subtlety as his main tool, which is why unpacking his isolated vocals on their song "No One Knows" is so much fun! Plus... we get to dive into some cool vocal recording nerdiness :)
Let's dig in!
Nice to finally see an analysis of Josh's vocal technique! Hopefully we can get an episode on Mark Lanegan someday as well. That fella has a pretty unique and interesting voice
2nd on the Lanegan (RIP)
Very cool analysis ! I believe the whispered parts were recorded by bassist Nick Oliveri. There is a making of video of the song, in which Josh Homme says they gave Nick the lyrics and asked him to record whispered words or lines. Nick was free to choose which words he wanted to whisper. Meanwhile, the rest of the band was betting on which words he would whisper. They probably got "pills" right
In that same video Eric Valentine (the producer) explains how they recorded: three mics, one clean, one overdriven by tape and one room mic with a bit of slap back echo. No double tracking except for the background harmonies.
Damn guys where do we find that video??

4:55 I think at this point we are all wondering if is this worth it
Josh will not discuss any of his production or device techniques but at the same time, I bet he loves when you discover and discuss all the fruits of said techniques, as much as we do. Thanks for this examination.
He's loosened up a little now. If you watch his Guitar Moves video he talks about how he used to want to be mysterious, but he realized if you don't say anything then eventually people stop asking and he realized he actually wanted to share what he learned. He still hasn't done a Rig Rundown or anything though...
@@emmarossignol4445 I’m always hoping he’ll flip and suddenly find gear talk the most interesting and fascinating part of his journey because he and his band have done so many interesting things at a time when interesting and new on guitar, was a thing of the past.
the back vocals really sounds like a mellotron with that wierd vibrato tape sounding really cool
'He's not that straight' - Chris Liepe about Josh Homme, 2021
Eric Valentine, the producer of Songs for the Deaf, did a pretty in-depth breakdown of this song. I think it made Josh mad, so he pulled it off CZcams. It's still out there if you look, though. Those background vocals; he said he used a plugin called "Vinylizer." Josh did one pass, and Eric said they copied and pasted it again to the end-part. QOTSA do not use click tracks, and it's a testament to how tight and consistent they keep tempos. Fun video.
Yes!!!! Josh Homme! One of my favorite singers out there. Thank you Chris! I've been waiting for a Mr. Homme voice analysis for so long!
I never noticed those whispers in the lead vocal track! The beauty of these subtleties and layers in production is astonishing. You never know what are you going to find in this isolated tracks, it's amazing. I had a lot of fun discovering my voice with those vowels too. Great work as always Chris, thanks!
I love love LOVE QOTSA! My favorite band recently along with Deftones.
Julian Cascablancas would be a nice addition to this series.
Well , Julian cannot really sing !
yess
+1 for Julian casablancas!
@@Oltaa His vocals were rough on the first album, but besides that you're embarassingly wrong.
@@Oltaa yeah and you are obviously an authority on singing.
2:12 That was like seeing a person doing a Pokemon evolution.
Dude that chorus you recreated sounds 95% like josh haha. This was cool!
Thanks!
One of my favorite bands who don't get enough recognition thank you again brother excellent video I learn so much from u
'That's a diction thing'.
I heard, 'That's an addiction thing'.
I was like woh. Feel good hit of the summer and all.
Julian Casablancas is a very versatile and interesting vocalist. There's A LOT you can talk about when it comes to technique and character. I'd check out his vocals on The New Abnormal, Is This It, and Tyranny (the Voidz (JCs other band)). PS: Great vids man. You taught me to sing! Thank you!
Absolutely.. the man has style!!
I’d love to see one of these for Hayley Williams. Love her voice! Also I’d love to see how you mix your vocals. You get such a great sound really quickly and I never seem able to
Hayley Williams is indeed a brilliant singer. She evolved so much.. to really study her singing you need to re - visit every step of her journey. Since 2005
Chris, your voice is very very beautiful. This was so interesting…
Interesting! Would be great to hear you explain Alex Turner's singing voice
The whisper vocals is probably Nick Oliveri, it fits his singing style. I think he does it in First It Giveth as well.
Love the video.
How about a video on Paul Banks from Interpol ? Specifically, Obstacle 1. Thanks !
Hey Chris! Great pick. You should make one of these about Blink-182. The isolated vocals for songs like Feeling This are very interesting. Keep it up!
2nd this. I'd love to know what effect is going on at the start on the drums too. My friend sent me a recording the other day and showed me a clip recorded on a phone and moved from the screen to the speaker while recording and it had the same kinda sound so I wonder if it's some kind of panning and low pass trick or something.
@@originalvonster its a flanger effect
@@joerandl9252 thank you
@@originalvonster yeah the whole song is a masterpiece of production
Great video. I am still hoping that you do a Brandon Boyd (incubus) or Mike Patton video. Brandon has forever been one of my favorite singers.
I’ve done a mike Patton video! Check the in the style of playlist!
@@chrisliepe cool. I must have missed it.
Alex Turner or Julian Casablancas next please
love the breakdown/explanation.....hardest part to discern most likely is the self induced "not getting enough sleep" and harnessing the tension that induces....QOTSA might be the modern/rock quintessential example of this....also maybe for having such understated attention to detail throughout nearly all of their music....
Top notch Chris. Such a unique approach to helping people break on through to the other side...
Amazing Analysis! - But I want to point out, that the credit for the whispers actually belong to the band's (former) bassist "Nick Oliveri"
You can hear Nick's full voice on these Queens of the Stone Age songs, where Nick us the lead singer, not Josh:
- "You think I ain't worth a Dollar" / "Millionaire"
- "Quick & to the pointless"
- "Six Shooter"
- "Gonna Leave you"
- "Just another love song"
- "Bloody Hammer" (Robert Erickson cover)
- "Autopilot"
+ The background Choir are Josh & Nick together
Cheers dude from Cologne, Germany.
PS: I just met Nick on his solo "Death-acoustic" tour. I was allowed to play / open up for him back in April.
I’m not sure they used protools for this album. I think it was all done on tape.
Amazing analysis. I’d love to see your take on Rise Against
They did use pro tools and tape. They used a mix 24 setup
Please do a video about Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocalist of the Mars Volta)! I love singing them songs, but it hurts after 2 or 3 songs and would love to know how Cedric (or you) would do it. Also production-wise, I'm stoked to know how they done it! I would love to do something like Cedric in one of the songs in the band I'm playing in.
Your content is the best, Chris. There's always so much to learn from them. Thanks!
Very happy to watch this and see I have the same headphones!
Amazing as always. Would love to see you breakdown a Glassjaw track. Daryl has such a unique voice
Thank you so much for this i jumped out of my seat
These videos are so interesting and helpful. Thanks! One other thing I’d be interested to learn is what notes are being sung for the harmony vocals. Would be a good learning point for composition. Thanks, Chris!
Begging for a video on Jordan Billie and/or Johnny Whitney of The Blood Brothers! Their screams are awesome!
Great video! Cool vocal tones, and what you were able to dial in, with an originality for each singer that tries out what you discovered.
Awesome video, Chris! I’d love to see you cover Brian Aubert from Silversun Pickups; such a unique voice in alt music!
Absolut awesome analysis. Very helpful 👍👍👍
Julian Casablancas please!!! Would love to know his fundamentals
Also I'm still very certain you'd have a blast with Pete Murray. I bet you'd NAIL "Sunday" from his Lo-Pro years 😊
Thx for the lesson. I’d love to see one of these videos on Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria. His voice/style had always been intriguing to me.

@@chrisliepe You’re amazing. Thanks!
That's a GEM Chris, thank you so much!
I loved all of this.
Thank you for the great vidja.
First of all: Thanks for ALL of your content, it's really helpful and enlightening!
Second: I would love if you could also do a vocal analysis of QOTSAs 'Go with the flow'. It is one of my fav songs of all time, but I can't quite seem to grasp the melancholy in his singing while trying to maintain pitch and power.
Great Video , Chris!!1 Thanks for your content !!
I was wondering if you would analyse Dylan's Meet Me In The Morning , from Blood On The Tracks. He hits a lot of B4s in full voice.
I was thinking maybe you could explain that , and discuss how dylan's nasality helped him mix his way to b4, Also maybe Eric Burdon's vocals in the Animals House Of The Rising Sun!
Thanks for your time and content!Wish you all the best !!
Chris! Qotsa has to be in my top 5, amazing video as always, thank you! Btw, if you want to hear an interesting voice, check out Gustavo Cerati, the lead singer of Soda Stereo, which is the biggest band in Latin America (no contest). I know it could be a treat for us (wink wink).
great analysis, really cool stuff. i'm pretty sure the whispers are done by the bassist at the time, nick oliveri. maybe a bit pedantic of me but it probably helps the whisper tracks stand out a bit more against josh's voice. love the content, thanks for all the work you put in
This is so cool man, thank you with all my heart!!
You're very welcome!
You did it!! What a thrill!!!
A video on Daniel johns from silverchair would be awesome!
GREAT idea!
Been wating this a life time.
Thxs a lot
Wow, that's on point. Thanks a lot.
I can't figure out how Michael Sandler from Saga sings how he does. It is special. He reaches high notes but it doesn't really sound like headvoice, belting or anything/anybody else i've heard. His vibrato is kinda special too.
Nice. Good choice Chris!
Chris, love this video! Please do "deadman" by Karnivool!! You would be the first to do so and trust me, it's so worth it!
Oh oh a request, Dallas Green would be a great artist for a video break down! Such an amazing vocalist who has range in spades.
Yes Dallas green please! :)
Awesome stuff Chris!
Can you do Rag N Bone Man I feel he would be a great addition to the series
Most underrated band In history
Can you check the Villans of Circumstance on BBC Two? The only live version of I've seen Josh sing clean and without abandoning the high notes. I think Josh doesn't have a great range but he knows his limits very well, I would like to hear your opinion about that.
Can you make a video about billy corgan's singing style? It took me awhile to realize he has an extraordinary voice but now I'm pretty much obsessed haha
@@Mark95876 there's gotta be a way to mimic and at least learn what he's trying to do with his voice :)
@@Mark95876 lol billy wrote all the material and their parts for them , she forgot to mention
Billy has an awful voice
Jim James !!! My morning jacket
I'd love to see one for Donovan Melero of Hail The Sun! Or Jason Butler of Letlive/Fever 333.
This guy is good
You the king man ♥️
Have you done or would you do a Candlebox analysis? You or Far Behind would be the likely choices. I would love to hear your analysis of Kevin Martin's dynamic range and technique. Cheers.
Please do Josh Ramsay of Marianas Trench or Jimmy Gnecco of Ours. They’re so amazing I wish I could express like they do.
I love his singing. I wish Josh Homie was my Homme.
This is amazing
Hey Chris. Would you consider analyzing Randy Blythe singing style?
Yeaaaah Ginger Elvis!
Landon Tewers from The Plot In You would be an interesting vid
hey can you do one "how to sound like goody grace"? he sounds pretty good
Nice
Hi Chris. I would really like to master vocal fry, like Layne Staley did very well. Can you give me some tips or make a video about it?
Lots of videos on the channel about Layne and singing with distortion!
@@chrisliepe Thanks! I'll check those videos out
Need to see Craig Owens from Chiodos and Vic Fuentes from Pierce the Veil isolation breakdowns/Sing in the style of or whatever! Lol I just found this channel and you're definitely good at what you do!
I love your work completely!
Please...please...please add these extremely difficult head voice/falsetto mixed voice singers! They're not human lol
Yes Craig Owens please!!
Nice video man, any chance you could do a vocal analysis of Andy Gibb or Barry Gibb's vocals?
Yes!!!!
Please do all QOTSA songs lol
Perfect summary of what he does - I think.
One thing of attention - if not yet 'fixed'. After your intro the bumper follows and the background music during that is irritating/distracting a bit. Might just be me though
Very cool but there is most definitely no autotune on Josh’s background vocals
Hopefully this doesn't get taken down, apparently Josh isn't overly fond of his musical choices being unearthed. I know a video had do come down on a production channel that I follow
Here's Eric Valentine explaining: czcams.com/video/q3HzuDvPHY0/video.html
I hope so too!
I wonder if the whispers are Nick Oliveri
Can I recommend a song if you want to make a react?
Stoned Hare - Rabbit Hole
(It's a brazilian band)
Creepy whisper could be Mark Lanegan?
It’s Nick Oliveri
I mean he doesn't sing it like this though
I think it's more likely it's been ran through some slight modulation and echo and that's it
Those artifacts seem big enough that one should hear them in the mix, right?
Perhaps so... I always hear new stuff tho when I do these iso tracks... LOVE IT
Maybe a sing like Steven Tyler video?
where do you get these split vocal tracks?
Great video, now Marilyn Manson ;)

Do you know yungblud??
Not well... will check them out!
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 114
Is it not that he's actually feeling the tension of what he's remembering along with the emotion he felt at the time? Then the radio police come along and produce the shit out of it. i Don't want to put you out of a job but, the best garage punk hits relied on the lack of production, in a modern sense. The Sonics broke all the rules. What happened to experimentation? All music evolution comes from fans trying to copy their favorites. The ones that fail badly are those who don't make mistakes and become cover bands.
