this whole program was great- awesome blend of legends with the young and upcoming cats of the time... someone needs to tap carnegie hall on the shoulder and remind them to give jazz a little tlc again!
I honestly can't get enough of this song... I listen to it at least 6 times a day. I'm going to watch James Carter perform in Portland May 11! So excited!!!
Even within the confines of a classically restrictive musical environment, Mr. Carter is able to curtain his pugnacious ferocity and present us a kind of gentleness that is akin to the touch of a baby's skin. Such are the capabilities of one whose creative insights, inspiration and dexterity are unquenchably unmatched - at this time season.
@@MichaelJohnson-yu3vo Much respect to you, my brother. Isn't it so nice to hear Mr. Carter over and over again as he preaches saxophonically with such musical clarity, confidence and, of course, effervescence? Certainly! Lohvissimo!
Nice sax version but I was most excited when I heard the announcer say, "and our guest conductor, Lennie Niehaus". What an icon of jazz, jazz arrangers and musical scoring for films.
This rendition is one of the most beautiful things I've experienced! I thank God for the ability to hear because of performances like this. Impeccable phrasing! The definition of lovely! Well done James Carter!
I've just finished uploading my 3 part video of James Carter at Newport Jazz from August 4th. He was well worth the trip. As great as this version of Laura is, for me nothing can compare to Teddy Edwards version captured on the Good Gravy album [Contemporary OJCCD-661-2]. A good friend of mine named his daughter based on hearing that Edwards version during her conception. Edwards' Laura is not on CZcams, but his smoldering version of Lover Man is. Carter is exquisite and carries the torch !
Conductor/Arranger Lennie Niehaus is truly a classic....In my estimation somewhat underrated, but a fabulous composer as well as a highly capable reedman in the very essence of the West Coast jazz tradition (not to mention an alumnus of the Kenton Orchestras)..this piece is reminiscent of the 'Mancini' sound which pervades my collection.......Oh, and incidentally, Carter is playing rather well himself.
The tenor is a1926/27 Conn 'New Wonder' modified by Martin Suter of 'BLASHAUS' with modern Yamaha type keys.Re-aligned main body with a PanAm neck,'Buck Rogers' 30M style side slung octave mech. It's basically a Conn with rolled tone holes but with modern ergonomics. About $10 k but worth every penny. English 'Lawton BB 'mouthpiece.
@@MrReedmonkey What we have here is the best of the best . The Conn with modern ergos converted by a genius Suter, played by Carter who is a master ,and a real gentle gent , with a Geoff Lawton Mouthpiece , handmade and finished in Macclesfield England . Knowing this stuff may not be important to some but knowing this stuff can add another dimension . Bit like listening to his sister Regina playing on Paganini's Guarneri 'Cannone' violin .It can't get much better. Peace . Jonny .
@@jonviol thanks again Jonny, it is important to me. I don't idolise people, but his playing always brings me to joyful tears. He is a great inspiration, particularly to tenor players like myself. Warm regards, ken
so much technique went into this... it's unreal... the scoops, the vibrato, the flutter tounging, the smears.. it's absolutely beautiful
Connor Teige + circular breathing
The thing that amazes me is how effortless he seems to make it. He has phenomenal control over the horn.

The riff on 3:18 to 19 and the "dirty" look of Lenny Niehaus after.
James Carter is a Maestro
I’ve been coming back to this recording for the past 5-6 years and still not tired of it
I've watched this over 10 times the past few days
Same !!!
"Breathtaking", literally and for real.
James Carter is simply the best saxophonist in jazz today.

What an icon of jazz, jazz arrangers and musical scoring for films.
And let’s not forget that Lennie was one of the best Alto players to come out of the West Coast jazz scene.
Is it just me or is the bassline just great? It goes really well with the sax and the orchestra. It's not overdone and it sets the rhythm well.
James Carter, you have total skill in producing amazing sounds from the Sax.Much success and be sure to share as you play it forward :)
oboe + sax = awesomeness :D
his tone is amazing
Excellent, Fantastic melody and video, Thank you.

Such a great sounding sax.
I'm crying!
Every time!
That bend at 1:32 just gets me every time...unreal
Goosebumps!
For me, it’s the bend at 3:08.
One of the best performances in history of jazz ... this tone..
Gets to the core.of your heart just lovely.
Probably the best sax player today I would suggest, keep it alive!
James is a truly a master of both tenor and bari sax
And I mean he is crazy at alto and soprano as well
Simply.........FANTASTIC!!!
Sublime.
James Carter and the saxophone were one and a harmonic exchange at 2:15. Beautiful.
Mesmerizing is the only word to describe this
An interesting version of the hit recording that was indeed powerful and soul wrenching .

One of many saxophonic peculiarities of Mr. James Carter, isn't it?
Bravo!!! Lo strumento è un mezzo, non un fine, che serve per cantare!!!
