- BOOK LAUNCH SPECIAL! To kick off my book launch ( grab a copy here: amzn.to/2BDJiQz ) I thought I would make a video about how to create and fill a raised bed from scratch. A raised bed is a fantastic space to grow food and gives you a lot more freedom with what you can grow in comparison to containers.
Measurements:
7.5cm = 3inches
15cm = 6inches
30cm = 1ft
4ft = 1.2m
6ft = 1.8m
10ft = 3m

I can't believe my book is now out!! Make sure to join in for my first every livechat this Sunday @3pm UK time - I would love to see you there!
Your book (mine now) is due in the mail today!!
@@dinetk3125 Yay! :D
HuwsNursery - Grow Organic Produce Inexpensively Congratulations on your new book. Hope it will soon be available in the USA 🇺🇸
Congratulations. Fairplay to you. Will have it by the weekend.
Book is here, and i’ll be there on sunday too!
Baby faced huw is so cute 🥰
Can't thank you enough. I have just managed to get a large allotment 5meters by 12 and half of it has become quite over grown and neglected. A fellow allotment holder suggested that I should clear the area slowly but first start a raised bed to get planting. Your tutorial was very clear and concise and I will definitely be purchasing your book! Obviously I am also subscribed to the channel. More please young sir.
Love how I found this video AFTER building a huge raised bed by hand, with nails, a hammer and scrap pieces of half-rotted wood. I just found your channel today and I love all your advice on how to grow your own food
True about doubling the height for root crops Huw but don't forget that after the bed has been in place (on soil) for a year or two then the ground underneath will be usable by the crops (no dig theory).
The book arrived today!
Steve
I live in Burbank California. Though our climates are opposite. I have learned loads more information from your insight and knowledge, then I have from my local nursery specialists here. Lol Plus, you have great presence, and explain things thoroughly with great aplomb. I just purchased your book. Look forward to receiving it. May all your hard work, and garden passion bring you much success to come. Thank you my Welsh gardening kin 🙏
Congratulations for the launch of your book Huw! I love the boards from British Recycled Plastic, they look really tidy.
I just got home from work and my copy of your book is here waiting for me. Looking forward to sitting down and having a read through, then making a start on a raised bed this weekend. Cheers.
Thanks for great info. Not sure as an older person if I can do this but am preparing to begin anyway. Lol. My beds will have to be smaller and a bit higher. I’m trying to think of ways of using “found” objects. Love your channel. Inspiring. Hello from cold Southern California! 👍🌴🇺🇸
Hi Huw. Your book arrived today. Fantastic! Well done!
I know I'm a bit late to the party. I got the book for Christmas and have just found your CZcams videos. I'm addicted. They're great. Looking forward to more from you.
I don't know Brittish fauna, in Hungary we have lot of moles.
So if I buid a raised bed itt's most inportant to fix a chicken net or a mole net onto it's bottom.
I thought the process of choosing and installing a raised bed was very clearly explained, with clear demonstrations given throughout. I’m shortly about to be allocated an allotment and the practical knowledge gained from your video will come in very useful. In the meantime, I do hope your book has reached the wide audience you had hoped for.
Will try to build my own raised bed this year and I will fill it with my compost with your inspiration thank you.
That is a gorgeous book cover
Just got notification from Amazo, my pre-order will arrive here in NY on the 25th! I am excited to read this book and to share it with friends :)
Thanks for your channel.
Wow, dead excited, book has arrived, it is brilliant, great job
Thank you so so much! Please feel free to leave a review, best wishes, Huw
MY book is on its way! thanks Huw cant wait. Hope can apply to my area and climate. Just had another 4 inches of snow.
Great how to build a raised bed video Huw. Will be great to go along with the book. Congrats on it all
Great video. Thank you. Looking forward to more. Lost my allotment, garden all tubs and pebbles and a greenhouse full of veggie plants looking for a home. Will buy your book.
Congratulations on your book launch huw.
Great video. Thanks for sharing Huw.
now the rainy season, the perfect time to start growing vegetables for the family. I started by making plant beds using wood
so i looked at the materials from the british plastic site. they seem to only sell in 'raised bed kits' and for the closest to the recommended 10x4 is nearly 700£! I'll be looking at the pallet one I think lol
Lovely vid, can't wait to watch the next video!
Thanks for all your amazing information! I live in America and enjoy learning from you. Elise
Awesome timing, I got an email this morning saying your book was being delivered today :)

Congratulations on your book launch. My copy should be with me tomorrow hopefully. I can't wait so excited.
Yay how exciting Tracy! Thank you so much!
@@HuwRichards no thank you. I'm already hearing so many good things about your book from many in the gardening community here on CZcams. It will help me organise myself so much.
Just bought 2 copies. Will give one away on my channel. Good luck Huw - you rock sir. Well done 😊👍
Fairplay Tony. Im getting mine at the weekend.
Nice one! I built a load of raised beds using cardboard and compost on top of an old stone driveway; It works! Next year I’ll give it a go on the other quarter acre of old Grassland! We’ll see how it goes! 😊
Got my copy. Great stuff!
Thank you so much Josephine! :D
Nice one. Thanks. I'll also keep an eye out for your book. Cheers.
Received my book this afternoon, looking forward to using it on my allotment as I tend to waste a lot of space between growing stuff and never sure what works best together
My copy of your book is in it’s way to Australia & should arrive next week
OK I am gonna binge watching all your videos now
Could you do a video on which varieties of vegetables you prefer and why ? There’s so much choice that is perplexing as to which variety to go for
Great video!
Nice one Huw, look how far you've come! How lovely to have your book published - best of luck with the launch. I look forward to seeing it in print. Thanks for all your hard work in producing the videos over the years x
Hi Huw lve just ordered you new book,Thank you
Wow thank you so much Pat!
Your book arrived and I'm so looking forward to reading it. Well done!! What a great job you're doing. 👍👍X
2 drills; great idea!
I've got your book today 😊 I have a allotment but feel like I should do this one raised bed too, I have some decking boards I could use.
Awh yay! Good luck with it Kimmy!
Congrats and Thank you
I'm in Australia and I just purchase my copy through my affiliate with "The Book Depository UK". They do world wide postage for free! Congratulations Huw.
Sadly owned by Amazon now :/
I bought Your book yesterday from ebay:)
I built a double high cinder block garden bed over concrete, its just perfect
Nice learned how to make bed - was quite scared on how to do it. Thanks.
More helpful from others vedios I liked it. Thanks
if you take a look at the comopany you recommend, their raised beds kits are really expensive, a bit of a contradition with the idea of making growing food accesible which is the whole point of your book. if would be nice to see more affordable alternatives
Great video 👍🏻 those raised beds are awesome but I wouldn’t use them down my allotment due to them being quite expensive, definitely in my own garden though.
Whilst watching your video the door bell rang and your book turned up! Coincidence or good timing? Looking forward to reading it.
Haha
Good job
Thanks for broadcast makes it less scary!
Thank you so much Kathy
@@HuwRichards You are so welcome!
Dear Huw, I'm looking very forward to get your first book. Because of living in Germany I have to wait a few more days for delivering via amazon. I preorder the book. Kind regards from Germany, GaHou
First time subscriber..so excited to follow you😁..sad cannot get your book across the pond. 😞

I really appreciate how youre helping begginers like me :) i have a question regarding the amount of bean harvest in the 4 by 10 feet area which you recommened, about how many kilos would one harvest? (For example if we planted white gigantes beans or mung beans.) When planting, how can we calculate the resulting harvest to know how much planting space we would need? Thank you :)
Good episode as covered a topic on my mind lately, would you use any amendments to the raised bed prior to planting/seeding?
Excellent advice. I made mine out of decking and purposely over tall (50cm), which looks nice saves my back and avoids slugs!
Hi Steve thank you so much for watching! Wow what a lovely depth there! Almost tall enough to avoid carrot root fly too
@@HuwRichards But terrible to fill up!
Try hugelkultur:D
@@HuwRichards Hey, I told Erica about putting logs in raised beds! Totally stole my idea with her video! Hee, hee! Great minds eh.
@@MrBobthephilosopher Hehehehe there we go Erica is in the center of the universe :D
Hi Huw, congrats with your book. I have ordered it from Waterstones to collect in the shop as I still have a voucher I can use. I was making a jigsaw puzzle on my iPad when an advertisement came up where you advertise your book. Well done. Eveline
I do this every year what ever I can grow , thank you guys for helping
I would love to marry you
Hi Huw, brilliant series on building raised beds. Your book looks excellent. I’m hearing some great reviews. I’ll definitely be looking out for a copy. Are you doing any signed copies? Take care. Nick
Great information !!! The place I need to put my bed currently has an invasive plant on it. If I cut the plant down and dig out most of it, will that be enough to keep it under control? I think it is a mertensia????
Thank you!
Huw: “You might have a tiny tiny garden”
Me: 🙋🏼♀️
My garden is about the size of a postage stamp! But! I’m working on putting in 3 raised beds stair stepping up the back slope. Thanks for the tutorial!
If anyone watching only has one person to build these, I have a tip. I connect my boards with the stakes/posts that will go in the ground first, so they're 2 high, but connected. Then I set them up upside down so they form the bed with the ends and lengths how I want them, each side just loosely leaning against each other. Then I use a ratchet strap around the outside 4 corners of the bed, tighten it, and it will hold them all together upright. Do your drilling and driving, then just disconnect the ratchet strap and flip it over. The strap will hold them all tightly together in the bed shape and it makes it easy to do with one person. You can also chain 2 ratchet straps by connecting the hooks together if needed for more length.
sorry I missed your live. I live in the slow lane...
Brilliant. Can I grow most vegetables in these raised beds on top of concrete slabs inside a polytunnel?
Cheers
Would you recommend using raised beds over growing vegetables in the ground ? I am trying to figure out the advantages of this system. Thanks.
Congratulations on your book! You should be very proud of yourself! Any update on the apple challenge?!? My seeds have been planted since you released that video but no sprouts yet :/
Super exciting! Video in the next week or two about that! :D
Drill all the holes first, then do all the screws. No swapping, and you only need one power tool!
Thank you, this is such a helpful video... alas , I didn’t put cardboard at the base, of my bed. I only have one layer of board. Maybe I should extend? Xx
As long as you add more than 15cm (6inch) of material on top you don't need cardboard underneath
HI,
I see in this video what looks like a home made polytunnel in the back ground, I was wondering could you make an step by step video as i need to make one about 6 feet long and 3 foot wide to go on top of a raised bed i will be making soon. your one looks like it can be removed to work the bed that would be ideal for me .
Thanks
Marc
The book looks great congratulations!! Will it be available in the US? Cant find it on Amazon
It’s on amazon.co.uk and you can get international shipping
Hi Huw, those raised beds can they be built in a polytunnel? Also the bark around the outside would that create too much moisture in the polytunnel? And congratulations on the book ♥
Hi Huw great video thank you for uploading. Have you considered measuring diagonally across each corner to check the bed has been built square? Due to costs I am planning on filling my beds just a little each year :)
Thank you so much! If the lengths are all cut perfectly to size then it will automatically be 90 degree angles at each corner :)
@@HuwRichards Not
Very nice, indeed! Thanks for the step by step instructions. I'm in the process of planning out my raised beds. Things are moving kind of slow since I broke my arm...lol. but, I'm getting there. Is your book going to be available on Amazon? Thanks!
Yes it is on Amazon now so make sure you go get yourself a copy :D I hope your arm fully heals soon.
@@HuwRichards Thanks so much! My doc says I am healing beautifully, thanks...😁
@@sweetolyve Awh I am so glad!
Great info Huw. Any plans on offering the book on Amazon U.S?
It’s on amazon.co.uk , you can select international shipping
I've got quite a bit of leftover soil from a 'sfg' raised bed about two years ago. So it's pretty much vermiculite, compost and peat moss. Would that be suitable to go in this raised bed or should I start from scratch?
Is raised bed effective with normal planting& what type of material you are using in raised bed....becoz wood usually becomes food for mites😂 in my garden
Hi there,
I have a garden just like yours and I was just wondering, when you make your raised vegetable platforms do you place a lining to separate the existing grass from the compost in the new vegetable patch? I am really worried that all of the insects in my existing grass may feed on my plants and I would be really grateful if you could advise me.
Crikey Huw, recycled plastic beds from that site is way over my cost budget 😢 £342 for 1.5m x 0.5m x 30cm!!
Can I build a bed with three boards instead of two like yours? Or two boards are good enough?
Great advice Huw! I wish we had a company that sold that plastic lumber like this in the USA, if you know any companies doing this I'd love to to know!
Found an answer to my own question I believe this company is comparable to the one in the UK! If anyone ask you can send them here Huw. itsrecycled.com
@@kiltedgardener Ooo great spot thank you! :)
Did the publisher give you any indication of when the book will be available on Amazon in the US?
I got my book on Amazon yesterday as a pre-order, it says I will get it on the 18th of Mar.
Hello Huw, I have built a raised bed on top of my garden using untreated scaffold boards and filled the lot with quality compost. Should I of added topsoil first or is 20cm of compost ok on top of the garden soil underneath?
I just looked at buying recycled plastic planks from the site you suggest. A bed, 1500mm long, 1000mm wide and 300mm wide is a snip at just £374.60. What a bargain!
I have two beds that are 4ft by 2 ft.
My yard is only 12ft by 12ft, so I can't go too big. So I'll have my runner beans and peas in growbags and my tomatoes in window boxes
