    Love that people are working with The forgotten but not un loved 3.8 V6. The big issue here as we all know is the glass transmission. In the day when I had my MKIII VR6 Jetta(n/a highly modded cams, BVH/P&P, intake manifold, etc.)I always thought The GTP was a beast.

    Those 3800's can take some abuse, but need some mods to support higher horsepower builds. ZZPerformance sells a modified oil pump spring that helps keep the oil pressure up. Ring gaps are too tight from the factory and need to be opened up to support higher boost levels. Throw on an intercooler and the motors make great power. I run solid 12's with mine on pump gas and a conservative tune so I don't blow the transmission.

    Always have been a fan of the 3800. They make good power and are reliable. If I get my hands on something that needs a GM v6 swap I will get my hands on one.
    I used to want an intrigue with a gtp swap, I feel like that would make an awesome sleeper while still being a comfortable sedan.
    I also really like my snow wmi kit. I have the "stage 2.5" on 2 of my turbo cars.
    One of them is mounted on the outlet of the intercooler and gets to ambient and sometimes under.

I always tell people if they race a supercharged 3800 car and lose just keep trying cause the more heat the slower they get. The second run is never as fast as the first. It is currently 10.5:1 if I remember correctly and I'd like to think cam choice would play a part in keeping it alive (duration, cyl pressure etc). The thing I would really like to know is how this would affect MPG. Doing dyno work is always cool to see the results but we all know, we don't run our engines at WOT under max load all the time. Yes getting more peak HP and TQ makes us smile and maybe something else un mentionable but we need to be emissions minded, and mileage minded as well. Then there is the issue of dependability also as this video brings out. Who wants or can deal with knocking bearings and cranks out frequently. For Richard to be able to just go out and source another engine to grenade is fine for him I guess but eventually it will come when they are not so easy to find, even though they were produced along the comparison of the VW Beetle.

    • @stlchucko
      @stlchucko Před 2 lety +2

      A narrower LSA would build more torque at a lower RPM and fall off at higher RPM, but it’s less necessary with supercharged stuff since the boost already makes more power down low. More torque probably isn’t ideal since most applications that use this motor are FWD and most of the trans “behind” this motor don’t like the stock , let alone the extra torque of a hot rodded one. Torque tends to be the thing that kills parts; both driveline and engine. Look at his Big Bang series, where he’s stated that loading in lots of boost early likely caused the Gen 3 5.3 to fail. It’s also the reason people don’t spray nitrous at low rpm. A “150hp” shot makes 150 lb/ft at 5250 RPM, but makes 300 lb/ft at 2625 RPM.
