    Its Day 5, the pain is getting worse. I can’t sleep. I can’t stop looking at the clock to take my meds. The maximum sleep I can get is of 3 hours. Then I wait the rest 3 hours to take a painkiller. I also had my adenoids removed. What’s legit making me cry is my ear and jaw pain, it is unbearable. I hope no one has to go through a pain like this. Stay strong guys, what’s done is done, can’t go back but definitely not forgiving the doctor who said I’d be okay in 1-2 days.

    I’m 28 years old, I’m on day 8 post surgery, every morning the pain is crazy for about 25 minutes straight until the tablets kick in, literally having morphine tablets every 6 hours and paracetamol in between, can eat 1 meal a day now and only drinking water and juice, the pain in the mornings is next level, the doctors need to give more realistic expectations about recovery. Saying you will be okay after a week is ridiculous. Good luck to anyone having them out, make sure you get plenty of pain management

    I’m so glad I had my tonsillectomy, my quality of life has improved tremendously. So I’ll start with that. I had mine out at 35, and it was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced. That was even with alternating Vicodin and Percocet every three hours, 24 hours a day. I’ve had a lot of surgeries and generally don’t find recovery to be painful, so I often don’t even need to (and I don’t want to) take the prescription pain meds. However, with the tonsillectomy, I really needed them, and even then, I felt they almost didn’t touch the pain. In spite of this, I would definitely do it again.

    I had my tonsils out November 21st 2022 (this past monday) the first few days after surgery weren't terrible definitely still painful but manageable. It wasn't until Thursday or Friday of that week just 4 days after the surgery my pain went through the roof! I couldn't eat,drink water,I couldn't talk or swallow, and sleeping was impossible. I've always felt my pain tolerance was high in general but as a 32 year old man there was times I felt like crying because I didn't know what more I could do for the pain. I was taking the medications on top of using ice packs on my neck. Im sure once everything is healed it will be worth it. But for anyone looking to get tonsils removed dont be discouraged but definitely be prepared it will be a miserable 2 weeks it definitely isn't a vacation from school or work..

    The worst constant pain ever 🥺... Omg. I'm a cancer survivor and I thought i would be okay. But it's been a week and I feel like the pain is getting worse.
    I can't take Motrin. And Tylenol is not enough, plus I can barely swallow anything even spit.
    It's so difficult to eat anything 😭 because of swallowing and the swelling in my throat. I have stopped breathing a few times because my Ulva is so swollen. Oh this is awful 😞😩. And I can't wait for it to end. I am sleeping as much as possible, I don't want to be up in pain. And let's not mention the "ear infection" like pain in my ears, and the "i just got my wisdom teeth" pain in my jaw. Oh excruciating geez... I know it's going to be better later, but ohhhh how i want to be there now. Today is day 7, and all I can do is cry 😢😭😭😭😭😭😭 and moan and groan 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨. I had mine removed at 42 and man it's been so hard. I was constant victim of tonsillitis and strep throat from the age of 9 years old. Then I grew up and got tonsil stones 🤢 yucky yuckky yuck yuck 🤢. To say the least. So this is kinda helping, typing this is taking my mind off it. But I am almost finished, now what will I do. I'm out of pain meds.... HeLLLP MEEEEE 😭😭😭😭😢🥺... GOOD luck my fellow tonsillectomies.... I wish you quick and full shifa Inshallah 🤲🏾🤲🏾🤲🏾 Ameen may Allah Subhana taAllah bless and be with us one by one. Ameen 🤲🏾

    I’m 30yrs old and on my post-op Day 7. I’m still in excruciating pain and it’s unbearable. Yes it’s true they say you need around the clock pain medications. I’m taking acetaminophen 500mg every 6hrs and a breakthrough pain medication of ibuprofen 600mg every 6hrs. These medications usually wears off after 2.5-3hrs and I feel like I will be waiting and watching for the 3hr time period for my next dose of medication. This is the worst pain I ever felt. Worst than my hemorrhoidectomy. My husband bought me last night a Vicks cool mist Humidifier and it helps a lot. Drinking lots of fluids, ice chips, ice packs, icecream, cold water helps hydrate my throat. However, I usually take pain medication before having my meal. 30minutes or until the pain medication kicks in. Rice and vegetable soup are my favorite, mix them together and Enjoy. As long as it is soft and will still give you the nutrients you need.

    Had my tonsils taken out 5 days ago! The past 5 days have actually been ok! Pain is manageable since I have been staying on a routine with my meds! I was given t3s and was told to mix/rotate those with Advil! Which has been good for me. I had to cut back on the T3s as they started to make me extremely nauseous yesterday! My doctor also had given me steroids to take starting yesterday, and I took my last one today! Those were to help my swollen throat and they were actually super helpful. But..My throat started stinging/burning last night. It’s always the mornings and evening that are most painful for me! During the day it’s good and I can talk and feel human! I have eaten everyday. I’m trying to keep food in my system so I don’t end up feeling worse without having food in me! Day 1 I ate cold Mac and cheese, day 2 I had mashed potatoes and I mashed up a hamburger into mush so I could eat that as well, day 3 I had Mac and cheese and more mashed potatoes, day 4 I ate chicken noodle soup with soggy crackers and buttered bread, and today (day 5) I had some pancakes soaked in syrup. Also every day I’ve been having popsicles as well and frozen yogurt. LOTS LOTS of water. I can’t tell you how much water I’m drinking. I tried Gatorade but the flavours are so weird after the surgery I just prefer water over anything. I’m sure I still have a lot way to go! Hasn’t even been a week yet! I hope it stays manageable

    I am officially on day 4 today.. My surgery went well even though the surgery took over 1 hour. My pain is different, one day it is 5/10 and other days it is 7/10. I sleep fine, but it's a bit hard to swallow at night, so that wakes me up. A good piece of advice is to always eat something cold or drink something cold. I eat everything, just needs to be cold. I eat ice cream and ice cubes several times a day to keep the swelling down and it has helped quite a bit. I take my medicine on time and that has also relieved me quite a bit. Right now I'm dealing with tonsil foam which is really uncomfortable but I think it will only last for 2 more days and then hopefully it will go away. I have also become constipated because of the medicine I take, so remember to eat plenty of fiber so that the stomach is constantly working.

Not sure how to proceed. I’m going for a second opinion with another ENT next week. I’ve done all the other checks to rule out any other possible causes. Blood tests, swabs, seen 3 different dentists who all say teeth & gums are in excellent condition, even done a Gastroscopy to check if the bad breath is stomach based but everything else is perfectly normal. This has gone on for months now almost a year 😢 and has affected my quality of life. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

One of the first signs of upcoming chronic tonsillitis is bad breath and tonsil stones but I can’t believe the first one didn’t check for anything else!!?? There’s also a size scale, 0, 1,2,3 and 4 which are the size of the tonsils. Usually people who have chronic tonsillitis or have had alooot of strep/ flu in the past have the larger tonsils and 4 means they’re touching or blocking breathing. Among like tons of other things your ENT should’ve probably checked for like if they’re cavernous that should’ve been one of the first. Second day of recovery: no pain! swallowing is easier than yesterday. I ate scrambled eggs, noodle soup, pudding, and vegetable cheese soup :) I’ve also been chewing gum. Praise God! I still don’t think I’m in the clear tho, and am curious to see how I feel when it starts to scab back there. I’ve heard that can be painful. Also interested to see how I feel when I run out of Oxicodone. So far, I only take it every 12 hours and I take maximum strength Tylenol in between. My main focus has been hydration. Having a moist and cool throat feels amazing.

    • @DeniseTimmons
      @DeniseTimmons Před 4 lety +5

      3rd day: pain has set in. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 3 for today. I’ve had worse sore throats. The worst part today? The awful, disgusting taste in my mouth. Oh my gosh. It’s repugnant. I’m so grossed out all the time. I think the taste makes me feel more unwell than any level of pain or discomfort I have experienced so far. The diet is hard too, as it’s too sweet for my liking at this point (fruit juices, oatmeal, pudding, jello...). I also got a slight headache and jaw pain, but not terrible. Again, the taste in my mouth is the worst part, and it’s the one thing I can’t get rid of.

    • @DeniseTimmons
      @DeniseTimmons Před 4 lety +4

      Recovery day 4: I’ve been finally able to catch up on sleep!!! Sleeping was hard initially because I wasn’t able to lay back, as it felt like my throat was shutting close, and I couldn’t breathe well. Today, I’m able to sleep comfortably in my favorite position :) so that’s been the highlight of my day.
      Eating mashed potatoes was easier today than it was yesterday. Swallowing is definitely getting easier. The back of my throat looks white and disgusting, but I figured out how to not notice the taste as much! Apparently, I used to breathe in a way that my breath would also come out of my mouth, even tho my mouth is shut. This way of breathing is not ideal, as it makes you taste the scabs more. I am now breathing properly through my nose, and that helped not deal with that awful taste as much :) success!!
      Today, I have not experience much pain :) most pain is still a 3, and only after I wake up. What’s the most challenging thing for me today? The diet. I want a burger.

    • @DeniseTimmons
      @DeniseTimmons Před 4 lety +6

      Recovery day 5: Nausea. I think from not eating before taking oxycodone. That’s been the worst part of my day. Pain is easily managed with medicine. I was able to eat salmon and Mac and cheese without pain, just some discomfort. However, I do have to stay medicated or it does hurt. I have to take medication every 6 hours, and at the 5th hour, I notice pain starting to set. Nothing excruciating, but definitely not fun. An interesting pain I felt today briefly was neck pain. I wonder if it is from the weird sleeping positions I’ve tried. Anyway, because of the prolonged nausea, I would say today was my least favorite day. Curious to see what tomorrow will bring.

    • @DeniseTimmons
      @DeniseTimmons Před 4 lety +3

      Sixth day: nausea, low grade fever, headache, neck pain, and ear pain (barely tho). Today has been the hardest day by far (still not as painful as my wisdom tooth removal tho). The throat pain is actually not my primary concern, but the fever and nausea made the day a crappy day. Fever only lasted an hour and it stayed under 101, so no major cause for concern on that end for now.
      I can eat fine today, which is helping with keeping my strength. Diet was oatmeal, Mac and cheese, pear sauce (like apple sauce), and soft pieces of slow cooked pulled pork :) swallowing isn’t enjoyable, but it’s doable.
      Medicine is doing a fantastic job at controlling the pain, and a little scab fell off, but no bleeding at all besides a little streak of blood in saliva.
      I can finally feel the empty space in my mouth from where the tonsils were, and that’s pretty cool! :)
      Hoping for a better tomorrow! I am staying positive!!

    If you're here this isn't what you want to hear but.... It's a dumpster fire. The going under part is actually awesome even though that's what most of us are afraid of. I'd straight up do that for recreation if they let me. Just recently had my tonsils, adenoids and uvula taken out as I only wanted to go through this only once. It's going to hurt like holy hell forever. The only part that doesn't is right after surgery and that's about it. Don't let anyone fool you. Nothing makes it easier. Buckle up and accept you'll be eating your pain killers like candy. And they don't actually stop the pain, just whack you out where you won't remember it. From day 3 on to about 2 weeks sucks absolute ass. Even it could be side effects of the oxycodone, you must go to your physician or ER.

    Thanks for sharing. I had my tonsils removed, I believe my adenoids removed, and a deviated septum fixed at the same time and my recovery has been pretty awful so far. I had stints placed in my nose for the bleeding of my nose and they filled up and dried up with blood the first two days. I am supposed to get the stints removed today, so hopefully I will be able to breathe a little better. I've had so much anxiety about going to sleep because I often get nauseous from the blood in thr post nasal drip and it has made me throw up a few times. What has been helping me with the pain is ibuprofen 800 MG and the oxycodone but I feel more of a difference with the ibuprofen.

    Hey Doctor Liu, I l know I am posting this question late, but I am desperate. Got my tonsils removed 3 days ago. The doctor said they were the biggest he has ever seen. The surgery went ok, no bleeding at all. However, my uvula is HUGE, its so big that it covers most of my throat entrance. That prevents me from proper hydration and yesterday I had to go to the ER because of bleeding. I cannot sleep properly and I cannot drink water. I had cream soups but these do not hydrate enough. How can I get my uvula to a normal size? Thank you very much.

      The more you keep your head elevated, and the more you put ice cold things in your throat, the faster the swelling goes down (and the lower the risk of bleeding). Best of luck!

    Hello Dr.Liu,
    I know you’re not my ENT. I was hoping you could answer a few questions for me? I’m desperate for any answers. It’s been one month since my tonsillectomy ( no complications with healing). I went off pain meds at 9 days ( advil). I started eating normally with no problems or issues. Food tasted fine up until I started forming a salty taste in my mouth. I was told by my ENT in Denver that would go away within a few weeks. It hasn’t gone away and spoke with my ENT’s nurse yesterday and explained my problems and she said it could take up to 8 weeks. My concern is and I expressed this to the nurse is, I started having no appetite or desire to eat anything 6 days ago ( today being the 6th day). I’m aware that the taste will go back to normal with time, but my concern is I don’t want to eat or have a desire to eat. Why would that happen all of a sudden? When I was eating and had my appetite back to normal 6 days ago? The nurse told me my ENT told her it might be a GI issue and to see my PCP. I haven’t come across anyone who experienced anything like this after a tonsillectomy. It’s very concerning. I haven’t been able to get in with my PCP and will have to go to an urgent care. I have a trip to California at the end of this month and I’m completely lost on what to do. Thank you!

    • @GeneLiuMD
      @GeneLiuMD  Před 5 lety +2

      Sorry to hear that you are going through all of this. There are a few possible explanations that I can readily think of, and it won't be possible to know exactly what is going on with you. Without knowing more about the details and specifics around your surgery, your health history, and the examination of your tongue and mouth, I could only offer guesses. It is true that almost every reason that someone would have delayed taste issues are ones that are likely to improve with time.

      @leslieescobedoodell7622 Před 5 lety

      Dr. Liu,
      Thank you, for responding and trying to answer any questions I have. Spoke with my ENT today and was told that she doesn’t believe this is related to my tonsillectomy considering it happened a few weeks after the surgery. She said it is true there are taste disturbances but she never heard of people saying it being salty. With the lost of complete appetite and not eating with the rapid weight lost, I scheduled an appointment with a GI Doctor. I hope to figure out what’s going on and get the problem fixed. Thank you!
