Attempting the Coast to Coast on £50 bikes - Whitehaven to Sunderland!

  • The Coast to Coast (walking) is something that's been on my "bucket list" for many years. But unfortunately, it's a little out of reach at the minute, being away from family and work for that long, is just a no-go currently.
    So, I said to the lads, "Why not do it on bikes?" - We all agreed and I started planning. We initially planned to do this over 4 days. We're not seasoned pro cyclists, in fact, none of us even had bikes. And that's when the £50 Bike Challenge was born.
    This was weeks if not months of planning trying to find the right bikes. I must have messaged over 100 people trying to get them to sell their £75-£100 for £50. But in the end, I settled for a broken bike for £40 and decided to have a go at fixing her up. A cheap chain and cassette later she was up and running again.
    We ended up losing a member along the way, as his bike was way worse than ours. I guess the £35 price tag should've been a dead giveaway. Mix that in with a fall going into a corner too hot and a tumble into thorns/brambles and nettles, he called it a day and went home.
    But despite this, my brother and i, pressed on and ended up completing the whole thing in 2.5 days. Which in my opinion isn't bad for two people who'd not ridden bikes in many, many years, never mind the distance we covered.
    You could argue that we do a lot of hiking/running etc and in terms of fitness, we were well prepared in that area... but this used a completely different muscle set and was tough on the legs. Each morning got harder and harder.
    As a side note, My brother's bike was initially £30, which was an absolute bargain. But he also bought another bike for £10 with a cracked frame and transferred some bits over. But surprisingly, still came under the original £50 budget.
    But anyway, what an experience and an epic (but very wet) 2.5 days across the Lake District and North Pennines.
    Whitehaven to Sunderland.

    Hugely impressed that you stuck at it carrying those loads on those bikes. I did something similar this summer on a Dawes hybrid I got from eBay for £50 (added new chain, cables and decent brake pads). For anyone one looking to go bike packing on a budget 90’s steel framed hybrid bikes are ideal, they roll a bit better than mountain bikes and are a bit lighter but are super cheap, tough, comfortable, nice low gears and easy to fit bottle cages, racks etc. We used a Dawes Synthesis and Raleigh Pioneer.

      Thanks @hughjaars2285 . Great tip to use some of the older 90's Hybrids.
      It's great to hear people sharing similar stories and showing what you can achieve on a budget.
      I did look at a few hybrid options before the trip, but no joke, as soon as i started showing interest in buying a bike, its like they knew and the prices went up by 50% overnight on Facebook, eBay, Gumtree, etc.... and I got very desperate with only a few weeks to go until our C2C Trip 😂

I have also done 100 miles in less than 4 hours and a 25 mile time of 54 minutes 56 seconds ( average 27.4 mph ) on a Dunlop hotta perimeter tt bike with specialised TT wheels. The speed i did on the charity Coast to coast ride was done at a much slower pace than I was capable of because I was on a normal bike with drop handle bars with TT bars attached and the fact that I knew I had to finish it for the charity and it was nowhere near any sort of a record that a good Time Trial rider could achieve. I have won open TT races in the past, when I was younger.

    What is the app you've used to record your data/travel?
    It's very brave and admirable of you guys to set off on cheap, used bikes. The vast majority of bikepacking enthusiasts use incredibly expensive fancy bikes and equipment. It kind of puts one off doing it ourselves.
    Personally I do lots of 3 to 5 hour journeys, long loops, anything between 40 to 75km (on a cheap 3 speed hub gear bike), there're no hills around here, it's all very flat South Cambs, my local area. Guess it's time I started planning on a cross-country, multiple-day journey. The weather is definitely a deterrent. Rain and wind are a true enemy of cyclists and frighten the hell out of me. I do get soaking wet quite often - it's just about bearable now in the summer, if/when we're heading home.
    Thanks for the idea/encouragemen 🚲. 😅

    • @deanaird
      @deanaird  Před rokem +1

      Hi arturduarte113 , the app I used is Komoot.
      When my Brother and I came up with the idea of doing it on cheap £50 bikes, our goal was to show people that you don't need the latest, greatest, and most expensive gear to get out there and enjoy Bikepacking.
      I'm glad this video has given you the encouragement to get out there and plan some cross-country/multi-day trips. You'll have to give me an update on how it goes 🙂

    • @arturduarte113
      @arturduarte113 Před rokem +1

      @deanaird Thanks again.The 'screenshot' (?) you've posted at the end of your video with the map, and the data didn't look familiar. Hence, I've asked about the app. I'm familiar with komoot.
      For sure, it must be somewhat easier, with higher morale and confidence to have fancy gear, bike, etc, to face the elements, doing Lands End to John O'Groats or what have you (pushing it a bit far perhaps). But as you exemplified, just as much fun to do it in an old banger, even if you tumble over downhill at speed 😆 (I'm sure guys in fancy bikes tumble over from time to time). To do it with friends even better.
      Yes, if and when I'll hv all my gear ready, courage 💪, I'll post it here. Cheers 😃

    The only problem with cheap bikes are the tyre breaks saddle and weight apart from that they are every bit as good as an expensive bike apart from the peddles and gears and crank and chain

    • @deanaird
      @deanaird  Před 11 měsíci

      I think it depends on what you're doing. The purpose of the video is to show people that you don't need to spend £1000's on a bike to enjoy the sport/hobby.
      This bike was more than capable of doing the coast-to-coast on road/gravel track, even with cheaper components.
      But would I send this down RED/BLACK trails and jumps at Woburn... Probably not.
      If I had to make 1 complaint it was the bike only having VBRAKES. It was a white knuckle ride coming down Whinlatter Forest, lol. But the challenge was to only spend £50 (or less) so I can't complain.
