      I recently got into DL and wanted to unlock all the characters and thankfully I got enough tickets from event to get all the cards to unlock characters, I did have to buy structure decks but I read horror stories about people spending thousands of keys grinding for Pair Cycroid. Imagine building a specific deck to grind against Yubel and play the exact same strategy like 100 times to get the 3 yubel cards.

    Master Duel is massively generous considered its Konami and compared to other gotcha games

    • @admontblanc
      @admontblanc Před 7 měsíci +2

      Microtransactions are still expensive as crap, but yeah Konami is slightly less greedy with premium stuff, what really makes up for it are the budget options like how cheap a battle pass is vs what you get from it, the amount of free currency you get from just playing the game and ofc the crafting system. A fully f2p player can moderately compete with at least 1-2 decks per season. So while buying gem packs is expensive (although less expensive than a similar product in gacha games), the rest of the stuff is fairly generous.

    Master Duel may be far from perfect, but I'd still argue it is by far the best place for a Yugioh player to start when trying to learn the game. It is easily the best simulator for the game with the best presentation. Dog on it all you want for its various issues but it is one of the better starting places for any aspiring Yugioh player.

  • @Ragnarok540
    @Ragnarok540 Před 7 měsíci +10

    As someone that has played almost daily since release, I can confirm the game is extremely generous with the gems for daily missions and events, I have been able to build most meta decks and more than a few casual decks completely F2P. I only dismantle stuff if I know I definitely will never play it, or If I realize the deck is not for me (Branded, for example), and in some cases I have been surprised by cards I didn't expect to be fun, for example I got the prediction princess cards while pulling for Rescue Ace and Ghiski, and they were pretty fun in the ritual event, so I didn't felt the need to dismantle them. I can see for a streamer that literally wants to play every deck, and gimmicks like the dragon rulers, the game can get expensive, but the average player doesn't have to spend a lot of money on the game. About the competitive aspect, I reached Plat 1 when it was the highest rank once, and never felt the need to do it again, I think is too time consuming and I prefer to spend time on the events, for me deck building for each event is the best part of the game by far, I wish events lasted longer (except for the duelist cups, those are just ranked but with more floodgates). Overall my experience has been very positive, and if Maxx "C" ever gets banned, I will gladly spend some money on gems.

    N/R, “battle pack” and “legacy” formats seem like easily addible formats to master duel. I don’t even think it would take a away from ranked ladder I think it’s way more likely it would grab people that wouldn’t play master duel otherwise.
    Tcg, ocg and time wizard (2005 and 2010) ladders would be the dream but they seem distant prospects. At least the tcg festival seems exciting.

  • @Alx501
    @Alx501 Před 7 měsíci +5

    I feel like the core issue with Master Duel (aside from Maxx C) is that I strongly suspect that as soon as the game came out it switched over to being run by a skeleton crew of the bare minimum staff needed to keep it functional and doing new cards/events. There are a lot of signs of this, from the bad translations in solo mode to the fact that they just gave up making all banned cards craftable in the unlimited mode to the duel rooms not having much meaningful expansion of options 2 years in etc. Basically it comes down to Konami being cheap and lazy asf particularly when it comes to the video games (maximum profit from minimal effort seems the mantra more often than not).
    Overall it does a lot of things well, especially the aesthetics and the crafting/economy system, but it is missing a lot features and like Duel Links having the same set of events and ranked ladder over and over progressively burns people out. One thing I wish they actually imported from DL is having big flashy events akin to when DL adds new worlds. E.g. adding the ability to do tag duels, historical formats, etc could be a way to bring players back while adding functionality and depth that keeps it more engaging than just doing the same ladder/event rotation every month.

    The festival game modes are quite fun already, and since they alreqdy implemented it. I believe they can do like other mobile games where they have a permanently rotating game mode, where its like 1 festival per rotation. They can then use the stats on that thing and see if theres a game mode they could possibly develop if its played more than the others.

    I once asked someone who knows a lot about the OCG scene if the people there like playing legacy formats, and the answer was no, they prefer stuff like unusual rules or casual/no meta decks settings, biggest example I can find was the Thousand Meeting rules (anime character roleplaying, but meta cards aren't banned you just gotta met certain minimum requirements to count as a character deck). Since Master Duel is a game ultimately developed by and for the japanese side, that would explain why they never considered legacy formats, the demand for it doesn't exist on the side of the world that matters.

    • @ryuuohdeltaplus7936
      @ryuuohdeltaplus7936 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Pretty much spot on. "Time Wizard" formats literally don't exist in the OCG. And Draft isn't popular at all since everybody here want to play constructed decks, whether it's anime-themed or archetypal decks.
      Master Duel is pretty much a snapshot of the OCG scene.

    I'd really enjoy a time wizard format festival that was based around the original release format of master Duel. We had adamancipator with block dragon, VFD, buster lock, absolutely cracked Drytron with eva and 3 benten. And tribrigade was nuts too. It was really fun to jump into. Granted it sucked and the format has issues but I'm nostalgic for it now. I'd definitely play to just mess with halq again. Maybe we find out there's a deck even more busted than what we were playing at the time. Post format developments are really cool to see happen.

    For the obtaining cards part in which some Archetypes do not have their own secret pack:
    Let's imagine the Superheavy Samurai and Gold Pride release.
    Why not have that special pack, where both are inside, plus their own packs right from the start. Or at least release their own pack as soon as their combined pack expires? Just to make sure that we do not get the Exorsister Incident ever again.
    This might not be financially good, idk, but I would definitely love it as an F2P. Also, people that join later can actually come into the game and play the archetype that they are interested in!
    I, for example, pulled like no Rescue Ace URs when the combined pack was available...It took me so long to finally get the deck after dismantling a lot of URs that may have been viable in the future, just so I can play the deck.

    48:12 Funnily, that most expensive bundle doesn't even give you the most gems for your money.
    The most advantageous bundle for players is the 1400 gem one, I believe.
    To be fair, the difference across all bundles above that size isn't huge but you'd expect the price of each gem to noticably decrease with bundle size, not stagnate (and actually slightly increase again).

    I've played master duel since the start. I've spent maybe $60 total and I've always had a meta deck. I haven't had to get rid of old decks, and even though I haven't been able to make every new deck that comes out, I still have like 20 decks both meta and non meta. I was SUPER surprised by how fair the monetization was. I didn't even start paying money until recently.
    So anytime I see people complaining about how expensive it is, I wonder what could you possibly be spending your gems on? I've been able to make meta decks like swordsoul or spright or dragonlink or recently with snake eyes and labrynth, and still make non meta stuff like ABC and lyrilusc.

  • @tcoren1
    @tcoren1 Před 7 měsíci

    Hot take: I prefer master duel's crafting system to hearthstone's, especially factoring in that pull rates would be adjusted for such a system. In hearthstone there where multiple decks that I did not craft simply because they required too many epics (SRs), which cost 1/4 as much as a legendary (UR). Having to weigh those rates over every craft is exhausting.
    By contrast in MD I can treat commons and rares as essentially free which feels really freeing, I quite literally do not have to worry about them. And while SRs are a bit more scarce I never really had to skip a deck because it required too many SRs, y'know?

    As someone who came over from magic, I think one thing YGO players may not want as much as everyone says is communication with Konami. Wizards will answer anything and everything and they just flat out lie constantly. Saying things like "we don't pay attention to the secondary market" while having a whole division doing fomo limited print runs on cards based on their secondary market value. Hearing the narrative that they want to sell you on is the best you'd ever get, and I think that it's actually more frustrating than nothing.

  • @TemporalDelusion
    @TemporalDelusion Před 7 měsíci

    I agree with Josh it's gut wrenching to pay this much for a digital version. I paid many times for gems, full price not just sales and 80€ guarantee you 2.5 random URs. That is the worst case scenario, but it has happened to me MULTIPLE times so far. (Not even that because it's not even 50 pulls.)
    For me it's honestly disgusting that worst case scenario I need to spend 80€ on a UR I need when they are releasing most new archetypes with 9-12 URs minimum + staples.
    I would pay a crapton more if I was guaranteed more variety. Hell I'd be down if they released $$$ only structure decks too.

  • @Ralinor666
    @Ralinor666 Před 7 měsíci

    You can make sure draft players keep earning you money and are still interested in ranked easily. You just have to make part of the rewards for draft some number of the latest selection pack, they'll pull the new meta archetype from that and go: "Well I might as well play a couple of ranked games." or "I could complete this deck by crafting just 1 or 2 cards." and just like that you get more profit.

    Where is this being promoted? Didn't know about it until it showed up in my recommendations.
    Maybe I missed something unless this was being done & thought of very very recently.
    Looking forward to more episodes!
    Also you're correct in that it seems to function in its own space cause if it didn't, a lot of things wouldn't make sense like the ban/restrict choices in some cases seem to be pulled from dataset rather than from historic or researched data.
    The Royal thing is interesting because for a lot of people, it's just a nice touch or more resource. But for the people that really care, not having a proper avenue for getting them other than roll harder means there isn't a vehicle to get invested in the game. Personally I haven't pulled any royals that would make me care about the game more and it plays a small part in the general interest in the game for me cause of that.
    The game didn't feel like a beta, it basically was. A lot of the qol felt like it should've been there already and the lists and events were pretty rough with how they did them.
    Even now the events are very iffy cause of the lack of curation in the lists at times.
    In the later segment about competition, they definitely lied in the marketing, because it's marketing.
    The game is far from an e-sport and they definitely proposed it as or insinuated it would be like paper play when it's far from it.
    It'll never be those things as it is and they've had plenty of time now to make it so and they just haven't which is very frustrating for the people who are or want to be heavily invested into the game.
    That's why there's been a couple departures from content creators for the game because why take the game seriously when Konami doesn't.

    So you guys probably wont read this but at its core this is still a gacha game and a gacha games mentality isnt focused on the average player. Statistcally around 70% of the money they earn come from absolute rich people that have way to much money and time so they do these systems to get the most out of them. Considering that md is already one of the fairest and f2p friendly gachas i have ever seen and is still trying to improve the user experience with frequent structure deck releases etc. Ofc there a lot of things that could be better but im really happy the way they handled their Monetarizion

    58:57 That's a matter of taste. To me, Glossy is the nicest looking finish in the game.
    That it's the only special finish available to cards of all rarities is nice but I actually find Royal is a bad style: it's usually overloaded, too busy, and only suits very few cards such as Mirrorjade (but even those look perfectly fine with a mere Glossy finish).
    Glossy, on the other hand, is a proper style: it's sleek, all cards in that finish have an animated shimmer that crosses all of them on screen unisono, and even without actually seeing that effect the colours on normal finish cards and gloss ones look noticably different.
    The Glossy finish looks a bit like a rarity they don't print often in the TCG (maybe ulti, or ultmate? I'm pretty sure they printed Blackwing Armour Master in that rarity but I don't know what it's called).

    Magic ran into the problem of their online simulator canabilising paper play by such a degree that the Standard format that been the premier competitive format for over 20 years essentially died out in paper. Why would anyone but the most enfranchised grinders by cards for a rotating format in paper when you can just play it from your bedroom for the fraction of the cost? This is the reason i think Konami doesnt do Master duel up to date to current format, why would people buy Bonfires on release when they could craft them online? The allure with paper now seems to be that you get to play with new exciting cards while you have to wait online, so if you dont continue buying paper consistently you get left in the dust (which is not true in Magic, you can only play online amd then borrow the deck you want probably for a big event, costing WOTC paper revenue)

    The previous Pokemon simulator (PTCGO) was pretty good. It had different formats (Standard, Extended and Legacy(?)).There permanent tournament features (8 player brackets) for aforementioned formats where you could win packs. There was also a marketplace where you can trade Packs, Cards, Cosmetics and whatever there was inside the game. A big part of Pokemon is its collectible aspect. Thanks to the marketplace you could also trade up and build your own collection.
    And then they replaced it with the new simulator, PTCGO-Live. The game looks a lot worse, they cut features like the marketplace, tournaments, building a collection isnt possible as it was anymore, and in general it became more of a mobile game. All in all they went from a good game to literal dogshit.

    Master duel has become the fastest way to burn out on yugioh for me.
    I come back once or twice a year for long stretches, but it doesn't sustain. I think it's down to the single format best of 1. Can be very fun but can also be very frustrating. Maxx C sucks the gameplay out of the game, and some other fundamental problems in yugioh are especially problematic on master duel.

    NGL this episode was long but I feel like some of these segments could be the their own videos or at least you could get 2 to 3 videos out of this as there seems to be a lot to discuss (Which is good).
    TBH the fact that Josh doesn't know team duels exist really does show how bad it is implemented as it's pretty tucked away and there is nothing to do with it even though they do team battles in worlds and have team setups for season points.
    Overall yeah I do agree it is shocking how fair and free masterduel is but tbh I really want them to speed up new card releases to catch up and be at max 6 months behind OCG. Also need to use secrets more and I think they are starting as we are getting about 2 secret packs more regularly but man they are still quite far behind and it's ridiculous a person needed 600$ to get a deck. That's tcg levels of deck cost.

    Different game modes that let you draft. Or hell just play roulette like you guys do would be so damn fun and a great way for old or not the most efficient cards to shine instead of just being dust for my meta deck because why play anything else.

  • @aeonicx

    I still believe the main reason why no one plays team or casual is cause there is no rewards attached to it. Ranked and events are the only way to get gems to make more decks and get more cards. Why waste my time with casual or team and get nothing from it

  • @MDagonic
    @MDagonic Před 7 měsíci

    About the different mode and format most other online card games lock modes much more behind player level than Master Duel did.
    So I do not see why there would be any real issue having those. So it really has to be a development thingy.

    I think the only thing that disappoints me about the game is not being able to test against players for tcg. Promethean Princess already being in the game is nice, but I wanna try Fire King Snake Eyes, or even Salamangreat stuff but I got Princess but not Raging Phoenix smh

    50:46 That's not true. At least if you care about keeping singles or playsets of cards, the best packs to get UR dust are Secret packs with only four different UR cards featured.
    Half of the pack will be Master Pack anyway but this way your chances to pull duplicate UR cards are the highest (i. e. as high as in Selection Packs with the same proportion of UR cards featured).

    MD definitely exceeded expectations considering duel links lmao. Maybe this is just me being spoiled by LoR (rip) but I really wish you could trade in lower rarity CP for higher rarity. I don't care if the exchange rate is bad, just make it possible (like idk 500 N for 1 UR or something)

    A thing to note about the OCG that TCG players doesn't know, is that "legacy formats" or "time wizard" formats basically don't exist, there is little to no interest in playing old formats among the OCG playerbase. At the same time, draft is unpopular because people here much prefer to play with constructed decks, even in a casual setting.

    1. They want Master Duel to have it's own banlist to differentiate it from TCG/OCG/Worlds, they don't want the formats to feel the same when watching a tournament. It makes Master Duel feel like it's own thing instead of secondary to the TCG/OCG.
    2. They don't want to create a gamemode for something like Edison because they cannot release new cards for it, meaning that the players in that gamemode will stop spending money once they build all the relevant decks. However, players will need to continue to buy meta decks in the main gamemode.

    I think drastically different rule game modes (w/ corresponding banlists) would be cool.
    Like the draw til 5 w/ unlimited normal summon, or 100 card decks and extra decks, or chronological resolution, or hydralander
    Adjust the cardpool(banlist) for each set or rules. Master duel is bland.

    Konami would be foolish to think having older formats will hurt their bottom end. They already have over 2 decades of product created for us, we just have no real way to use it.
    Give us a place to use our favorite cards from the past and I guarantee people would open their wallets to do so. Nostalgia is the biggest product Konami has to sell, I think they are missing out.

    This is my first ep listening, and I would at least try to give some feeback.
    I am aware that what I say here may not be possible, but I would still like to put it out there:
    I kept feeling during the entire podcast that it needs another host. It is cetainly not that it is bad, but I feel like the chemistry is only halfway there. Josh is very knowladgable and well spoken on the actual discussion topics to an extent that I feel Farfa can't entirely keep up on his own, and on the other hand I feel like Josh is also a bit too.. well...German. Lol. Now that is who Josh is, and we people love him for it, but being in this cast it feels like it makes Farfa not being able to really be himself. He is not really acting like the Farfa you know from the streams and other people he interacts with, and I feel like that is such a waste.
    I feel the show really needs someone else who can sort of be in the middle of Josh's abilty for down-to-earh discussing, and Farfa's more wilder and jokester type of personailty.
    Rooting for your cast to do well either way.

    Unsurprising for Yugioh players to have awful taste, have you ever actually looked at a glossy card? The shine is practically unique for every single card based on the art like a real foil, they look fucking beautiful. If anything the big flash of white is a negative because it stops you from watching the glow effect.

    I hate how so many yugitubers main focus is Master duel (hi farfa). If the game was actually good I would understand but it’s terribly boring. Not the gameplay but the fact there is nothing to work towards in game other than ranks and the occasional worlds qualifier event.

    It's very simple why the game modes are either not there, suck, or not pushed. Konami doesn't like making video games that aren't just basic boring nothing. Look at the other games they make, that answers your question
