In this After Effects tutorial I go over how to use the new track matte selection tools inside the 2023 release. This is a new feature inside After Effects 2023 and changes the way we use alpha mattes and luma mattes. I also explain what an alpha matte is and what a luma matte is so that you have a strong foundation for how mattes work inside Adobe After Effects.

where is pick whip in version 1.5.7? cant find it? pick whip for track matte, not for parenting

Does anyone know if there is a way to still use black and white images as alphas as in the pervious versions. Trying to do something more complex than a triangle shape layer. Thanks for any assists. First time in new AE

First of all - Great tut.
My question is -
I have created animation in Adobe Animate, and my background color in the animation is green. Now, I want to apply texture only to that specific green color within my animation (and not remove the layer in Animate). Obviously, this green is of a very specific hue. I assume there must be a way to specify a mask to the texture layer that will follow a specific color that I should be able to eye-drop. But I cant find this option.
Any help?

Very helpful... however, "a staircase"? To me the luma matte icon looks more like a light (luminance) shining from the top left corner. :)

for some reason when I go to set up the luma matte option my list of options is different. Does anyone know where is the luma matte option in after effects 2024?

Yeah but the whole Track matte selection is gone in the beta of AE. Where can I find it?
whenever i try to do the luma matte part it only shows front how do i fix this
Great tutorial. What if you want a layer to be affected by multiple alpha mat layers at the same time? 🤔
To do that, I would probably try pre-composing the layers that are alpha mattes and then link it to the layer you'd like to apply it to.
How do I get the track matte option on the top layer?

Hi there,
There should be a switch at the bottom left side of the timeline panel. Click the switch to turn on the view options for the track matte controls. Hope this helps!
trk matte isn't on my screen, how do I get it visible?
If you right click on the columns in the Timeline panel, you’ll see a switches button. Be sure that is check marked and they should appear.

Hello!
I think I found the solution for this problem. I believe the renderer needs to be set to Classic 3D in order for 3D layers to read track matte settings. This can be changed at the bottom of the composition panel. Instead of Cinema 4D, switch it to Classic 3D.
You can also change this setting in your composition settings. Just go up to Composition > Composition Settings and then in the 3D Renderer tab, change the setting in here.
In addition I found out that the Draft 3D button needs to be turned off at the bottom of the composition panel. Hope this helps solve the issue!

i still so confused. im literally just trying to do an ink splash overlay transition and I cannot figured it out I'm just trying to do an inverted matte. help me pls

Hi!
Sorry you are having troubles with this feature.
To apply an ink splash transition to your footage. First click on the layer that you want to be revealed by the ink splash. Then underneath the Track Matte switch column click the drop down and select the ink splash layer.
By default it will choose alpha matte. You'll need to change it to luma matte. To do that, click the switch next to your footage layer that looks like a gray dot inside a white square. It should change to a sun icon. This indicates that it is a luma matte now. You may need to invert it as well and to do that click the icon next to the sun icon and this will invert the matte so that it displays you footage in the opposite luminosity of the splash layer.

You can try to click the Toggle Switches / Modes button at the bottom of the Timeline panel. Or at the very bottom left side of After Effects, there are more expand and collapse menu options.
is there a way to turn off this new feature and use the old way of track matting?
No, there isn't unfortunately. The only way would be to use a version of After Effects 2022 for earlier.

Why do you consider this change stupid? If anything its stupid they didn’t add this feature 20 years ago.
yeah , I recant this statement. I just wish we could preview transitions without having to open Adobe Bridge lol.. have you played with CapCut Desktop transitions and effects?@@EricPeelMusic
