  • From 'A Swingin' Night at the Sabre Room' with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, 1977. I own squat, not the pictures or the audio, but this is definitely worth a listen.

      The look on Jerry's face when Dean walked out... Jerry wasn't so happy . Only Frank could have pulled that off .... Noone was about to refuse Frank anything .

      Jerry was shocked. And very happy to see Dino but you know they had been seeing each other. Just a few weeks before this they were writing notes to each other in lipstick on the mirrors backstage where Dean did his show. The 20 year feud was a myth

    Saw Dean right around this time, Summer of '77, at the Sahara Tahoe (I was a lucky kid who got to see a lot of those tuxedo era cats at that time, thanks to my folks). And this is what he did. And he was hysterical. You can't tell a story with that much finesse if you're Really drunk. He just had that ability to make it sound like he came straight from the bar to the stage, and then could headline like the pro he was.

    I always thought it strange about the break up. It wasn't the usual I go my way, you go yours. They cut off contact with each other totally is my understanding. These guys knew each others family and had the same friends. At least I think they did. Lewis said it was time for them to do their own thing and I believe that may be true for the split of the partnership but not for the animosity. Even after '76 they rarely appeared together in public. Lewis till today, at age 90, says it was the most happiest time of his life. Something had to have happen. Something severe. No one is talking though, probably for the best.

      Troy Bettencourt You may have raised a very good point. As I understand it for many of the 10 years of the partnership they were very good friends, so it does seem possible that there was more to it than just the dissolution of the business relationship. Maybe something much more personal that was never made public? I know that in later years Jerry admitted to being jealous of Jeannie and the hold he thought she had over Dean ("he was my partner and I wanted to keep him to myself") and according to Deanna's memoir of her Dad, after the split Jerry did make some disparaging remarks about Jeannie in the press which of course caused Dean to spring to the defence of his wife, so there is that... But, as you say, it's something that the public will probably never know. Unless of course, we are both barking up the wrong tree and 'causing two and two to equal five!'

      There was a lot going on. People telling both of them they could make it without the other. Jerry's ambitions and being a workaholic. Dean never getting recognition in the act, articles would be how great Jerry was and if they mentioned Dean at all they'd be like "oh he sang a bit". During the filming of 3 Ring Circus, the original script had 20 pages in between the 2 of them meeting, which caused them to fight with the studio, but even after revisions, the movie was all about Jerry's character rather than their friendship in previous films. Also during that filming, Dean found Jerry doing a photo shoot without him, sounds silly, but they were partners and shared everything 50/50, or that was their plan. Plus add that Jerry did all the work with the writers while Dean played golf. According to Jerry, at the end of the relationship, he was telling Dean how much they loved and still cared for each other and Dean told him "You're nothing but a fucking dollar sign to me". Then there's the fact that Dean didn't want to play a cop in the Delicate Delinquent and would have preferred the character be changed to a detective and Jerry told him that they would have to just find someone else. There were def personal feelings involved.

    The more read and hear about Martin/Lewis split the more it reminds me of another acrimonious breakup that between John Lennon and Paul McCartney. In both cases, they were true creative partners and one day one just had enough. In both cases there was jealousy with spouses. And of course in both cases they rarely saw or spoke with each other again--too painful. Bromances are as tricky as romances I guess.

      +Tony S Not really. They wouldn't have stayed together for 10 years if it'd been hell for either one of them, even with money involved...it would've lasted a couple of years tops in that case. They truly got on and loved each other and created stage magic together....for at least 7-8 of the 10 years it was great until the pressures of fame, all the sycophants and family and press got the better of them...Also, Jerry was a comedian, who are by nature over the top and moody (not his fault) just the way he was then...Dean had his faults too remember...in summary they were both awesome and there will never be another duo like em' :)

      @@valarienicoel Sure, that's it. The slaps and thrusts in this episode are real, meaning Dean Martin puts more force than he should. It's the last episode of Colgate before the breakup. And despite pretending that everything is fine, the tension between the two is visible. You will notice that around 14.14 Jerry gestures towards Dean putting a hand on own head after the slap. Dean hurt him. I have read everything from an absolutely reliable book on these two: Side by Side. The most reliable one taking into account what is known. Although I am convinced that the TRUTH, the real one, about their breakup, has never been told.

  • @matthewgallagher1761

    The Dean with Jerry was the real Dean and, I think, the vastly more talented one. The whole "drunk act" became too much as the years went on - and it's evident here. When he was with Jerry, you saw a whole range of talent - beautiful singing, dancing, great comedic chops, and he could be real. Same with Jerry. The Dean Martin "act" seemed too much a put on and it took away from the range of his talent, which was immense. Yes, he was still great, but when it was Dean and Jerry, it was the real thing. And you could tell that from just watching one moment of it.

    • @jerrylewisthekid5479
      @jerrylewisthekid5479 Před 3 lety +4

      Exactly. Jerry hated Dean's drunk character and he was right. Dean got burned with that character, he was trapped in it until the end. Frank also said that if Dean took himself more seriously as a singer he would become immense. Just like Jerry said. (but Jerry is always the bad one apparently).
      Dean has NEVER taken himself seriously.
