Does this Cloudhammer S5 Steel Sword Justify its Premium Price?

  • I bought this sword secondhand, from somebody else who also bought it secondhand, so I don't know the exact price. Looking at Cloudhammer's webpage, they have similar swords also made of S5 steel for around $800. In this review, I go over the sword in great detail, explain why I had the grip rewrapped, and put the sword to the test with cutting, including some slightly abusive tests against wood.
Please keep in mind that when discussing the properties of S5 steel, I am no metallurgist and I probably got some information incorrect. This is an "average Jeo's" take on "super steels," not an expert's!

shad's channel reviewed an S5 katana by these guys and they were stunned. They were able to smash it edge first repeatedly into a chunk of blue stone, chipping off good sized pieces of it, yet the blade did not suffer more than superficial damage, and was able to be work sharpened back to paper cutting in just 2 minutes. I decided to look into what this wonder steel is used for and low and behold, it's they stuff they make jackhammer bits out of lol, no wonder it's able to laugh at even hard stone! The novelty alone is hard to resist. when they it it edge on edge with a wallhanger sword, the wallhanger did nothing but was gouged a centimeter deep in multiple spots.

Thank you so much Kyle! On a smaller note...you mentioned saving up just bit more cash to buy an Albion.......but Albion quotes 2 years out to get you a sword. I spoke with him 3 weeks ago. Wow..2 years.

Yeah, Albions wait times have been going up more and more recently. I don't blame anybody for not wanting to deal with waiting 2 years! Luckily there are other options - Kult of Athena has several in stock (link below), and if you can make it to one of the few in-person events Albion goes to (SoCal Swordfight and Combat Con), they usually bring a good number of swords. And there's always the secondhand market as well.

Very interesting offering from Cloudhammer. Thanks so much for putting it so carefully through its paces, and showing what it can and can’t do. S5 has a few interesting possibles, so it will be neat to see how the sword market makes use of it in the future.

Interesting that it dulls so quickly by hitting branches lightly. I've cut branches green and dry using different swords, none of them has dulled so noticeably. The tip just bent far too easily, granted it's tapered into big of a needle point, which is great for European swords, but the way it bent didn't even happen with any impact. I've hit sword's tip into walls, concrete ground and metal rails in the past and while some suffered some tip deformation, none of them deformed to this noticeable degree, even the needle points on Albion swords, or very thin points on LK Chen swords.
I know their S7/S5 steel katana has performed well in durability tests against both wood and metal, but this demonstration you have done shows it's not heat treated nearly as well on at least this sword, which has some unique and interesting designs, but still shows tons of room for improvement. They really need to go back to the drawing board on their European offerings. Consult some experts, have a better understanding of the history, purpose and design specifics of different European sword types. It can't just be a jian with a longer transition to a more acute tip, with a doorknob as a pommel instead of a hollow Chinese style jian pommel.
Maybe the owner didn't want to do it this way himself, but the person who originally commissioned this specific one gave them the specs and requirements, but it simply wouldn't suffice. It's a lot better than many other entry-level makers, but it needs to do better to rival its competitors at this price range.

Thanks! I really enjoyed this review. As I mentioned before I am mostly a smallsword and spadroon guy, however I recently got my first sharp longsword. I probably would have got the current Cloudhammer S5 longsword offering had I not found the hilt so not to my taste. The hilt on yours is more appealing to me than the current one. The current one is way too long and the quillons to strait and square for me. I was (perhaps still am) really hopeful about the S5 steel. Not breaking or badly chipping in case I accidentally do a 'MattJensen' on it is more important to me than edge wear resistance. Anyway this review was just very pleasant to watch and not too long and not too short.

Thanks! If you're interested in buying one not currently listed on Cloudhammer's website, I would reach out to RVA-Katana to see if they can do a custom one for you.

Good review - such a shame that the tip is now bent hopefully you can get it straightened out!

I quite like it. I definately want something similar, but it seems Cloudhammer mostly had Katana in S5 and everything else is slim pickings or de-listed entirely. Katana are _okay,_ by I sitll like western swords after all, especially hand and a half.

I wouldnt worry about cutting small diameter limbs etc. At least I figure one shouldn't have to worry if their sword can handle what a waffer thin $10 machete can handle cutting.
