Believe it or not, this is based on the true story of William Alvarado. He was a Marine stationed at Guantanamo Bay and was the victim of a code red. He was attacked by 10 other marines and was tied and gagged. During the code red, he began to choke and cough up blood. The code red was ended and the Marines did get help. Alvarado survived and one of the Marines, David Cox and 2 others choice to stand trial stating that they were under orders, like in the movie. Cox was found guilty of assault and served 30 days. He finished his service and left the Marines in 1989. He did see this movie and some of the other Marines involved, I believed sued Castle Rock entertainment. David Cox disappeared in 1994. The American TV show "Unsolved Mysteries" did a segment on this incident.

Yup. Aaron Sorkin's sister was the one who defended the marines. The idea for the film came from a conversation they had. You could argue Daniel Kaffee is based on his sister Deborah. 10/10 film for sure 🙂

Strange I never heard of it and I served in the USMC in the late 1980's. Was even at both the Leeward and Windward sides of GITMO. But enlisted ranks disciplining their own, was common throughout the Corps. I don't recall ever seeing any directive from FMFLANT on this (even though 'Code Red' allegedly was solely limited to MSC on GITMO).

I think this is one of Tom's best movies. Love his action stuff, but this fit both his personality and strengths of his acting skills well. Another movie which is very underrated but one of his best performances is Collateral. Hope you might watch that someday.

    • @sweetnumb
      @sweetnumb Před 5 měsíci +1

Collateral is such a masterpiece as well. I definitely echo your sentiments. Although you have to admit that Tom has been damn good in a great many movies. Mission Impossible 3 was a damn great performance as well. To be able to hold your own in a room with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and not be overshadowed is pretty legendary I'd say. Collateral is overall my preference as far as movies go (which is saying quite a lot), but I'm not sure it showcases his skills better than MI:3 did. Tough call though, his performance was definitely great and more nuanced in Collateral.
I'd say for the average viewer MI:3 is a must-watch Tom Cruise movie, but if you appreciate all the little details then Collateral may well be his superior performance. He's just so magnetic on the screen in pretty much every part he plays though.

This was the launch pad for Aaron Sorkin, who wrote this as a play for Broadway first, then the screenplay. Sorkin is now one of the most respected and desired screenwriters in Hollywood, and has even gone back to the stage at times as well. His films The Social Network (which earned him an Oscar), The American President, Moneyball, Molly's Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Steve Jobs, along with the TV series he created like Sports Night, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The Newsroom, and the beloved The West Wing are all a testament to his talents as a writer.
Dawson was not a trained actor, in fact, he was a location scout for the director's production company and read for the role because the director couldn't find anyone for the part. He knocked it out of the park.
All actors, even with this film, are required to learn their lines letter perfect because of the rhythm of the dialogue that Sorkin writes. No improvisation or "ums", "ahs" or "wells" are allowed.
Jack Nicholson did not work for very many days on the film, but during the big courtroom scene, he was on set doing everyone else's prompts at full power, as if the camera was on him and not the other actors in the scene who were on camera. then when the camera was on him, he did it just exactly as he did it for everyone else. All of the actors and director have told this story. It's a credit to Jack as a professional who loves his job.

2:48, this actor is John M. Jackson playing Captain West. A few years after this movie came out he was a costar on a tv show called JAG. JAG told the story of a team of Judge Advocate General (JAG) officers in the US Navy. Jackson played their commanding officer Admiral A. J. Chegwidden the Judge Advocate General for the entire US Navy and Marine Corps.
Because Tom Cruise portrayed a US Navy pilot in Top Gun and a US Navy JAG officer in this film, veteran tv producer Donald Bellisario came up with an awesome idea - "What if Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun and A Few Good Men was the same person?"
So JAG was launched in 1995 and ran for 10 seasons. A lot of the show was courtroom dramas like A Few Good Men. But also the show did a great job of portraying the life issues of US Navy personnel and their families.
From JAG was launched a spinoff called NCIS. NCIS portrayed stories dealing with the criminal investigative units for the US Navy and Marines. NCIS has actually ran longer than JAG and spun off many sister shows that take place all around the US and Australia.

30:35, the director Rob Reiner said in the original script that there was a whole romance subplot between Kaffee and Galloway.
However, he decided that having these two officers be in love was unnecessary so he removed it from the movie. Quite frankly I think the subplot would have cheapened both characters as she is his superior officer. So I totally agree with it not being in the movie.

Not much else to do on break then go grab a seat and watch 15-20 minutes of the movie. I always would hear the punchline of that bit. Finally on a a day off I was able to watch the whole movie. For some reason I was the only one who laughed at the set up of that bit on the ballfield.

The consequences of lying in court and/or under oath only apply if you get caught lying. Lying under oath is "perjury" and is usually punishable in the military by 1) 5 years confinement, 2) Dishonorable discharge, and 3) Forfeiture of all pay and and allowances. In the military, honesty is more becoming of a soldier than lying. And Lt. Kaffee was right when he said it doesn't matter what he believes, it only matters what he can prove. The movie featured one of the best scenes in movies, with a heavily parradied/mimicked lines "You can't handle the truth!" Chances are you heard the line before despite never having watched the movie! It also featured a parade of actors who would go on to have pretty good careers!

Fantastic film with a stellar cast. And has one of the most quoted lines in cinema history. The story is inspired by true events. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the play and then the film, has a sister, Deborah, who is a lawyer. She spent some time in the JAG Corps. and was tasked with defending marines who had assaulted a fellow marine. The marine didn't die in the real-life version, though quite a few of the facts are used, in some fashion, in the film. Worth checking out. If you like Tom Cruise movies, I suggest Rain Man, Eyes Wide Shut, and ofc, the Mission Impossible series 🙂

When Jack Nickolson wasn't answering the question I was worried you were going to miss something because you kept repeating "he has to answer the question". Just trust the movie. Enjoy the drama.

I like the complexity of this film. The characters and the issues are not black and white, there's a lot of gray area. Jessup wasn't just a bad guy movie villain, he had a tough job and a big responsibility to defend this American outpost and he acted according to his principles to accomplish that mission. But he crossed the line and had to be brought to account for what he did, even though the JAG lawyers grudgingly grew to respect his dedication to his mission. The two Marines were victims, acting under orders, but also had to bear responsibility for their part in the killing for following an illegal order and not putting a stop to it. To me the overriding theme of the movie is that we have to bear responsibility for our actions, even if well-intentioned.
I loved the salutes at the end, they finally earned each others respect.

Also a great lawyer movie with Tom Cruz is The Firm. and Murder At First 1995 a movie based on true movie about injustice. Also Erin Brucvich is a great movie. Fyi I recently learned the real story that this movie is based on is very strange and shocking for one thing the Santiago character did not die. The Dawson character dies in a real strange way. Also a great boxing movie with the Downey (James Marshell) character is Gladiator 1992.
