If an order is unethical, illegal, or immoral you have a duty to disobey, no matter who ordered the code red. Ever since the Nuremburg trials where the German soldiers said they were just following orders we have taught our US military members the rules to disobey. I served 20 years and commanded a squadron with UCMJ (uniform code of military justice) responsibility.

      Meant no disrespect here.
But, you can't really compare the Holocaust and a Code Red order.
And without all the health conditions of the victim, he most likely would've been fine after receiving the CR.
And since CR was a common practice under Jessep's command, there's just no way Dawson, Downey, or any of the other men would question, let alone, refuse that order.

There's a fantastic story on Jack Nicholson's last speech and the rehearsals, or rather when they were filming the lines and reactions of the other actors during the speech; Jack Nicholson volunteered to give his lines off camera just so his cast members would have something to bounce off on. Apparently the director Rob Reiner got a little worried that Nicholson was blowing some of his best stuff while they weren't even filming him, but as it happened each and every line delivery was exactly like the one they wound up filming when it was Nicholson's turn on camera. :) Consummate professional right there.

A masterpiece courtroom drama by Rob Reiner. Cruise, Moore, Nicholson, Bacon, Sutherland...every actor just killed it. The screenwriting (so many good and even iconic lines), the close up and tense camera angles...Just one of the best movies of it's genre that will ever be. Awesome reaction to a stellar film, Madison.

I was actually in front of a Navy judge in a military courtroom four times in seven months-- I didn't kill anyone, it was all for traffic offenses on base. I was able to plead one of my tickets to get thrown out but not the last 3. I was ordered to go to traffic school or lose my driving privilege on base. Each experience was actually very fun and interesting. I was also disappointed to find out that military courtrooms are NOT as fancy as the one you see in this movie.
Also, in the military, you are required by law to follow orders from your superiors. However, there is such a thing as unlawful orders and you are obligated not to follow them. However, determining on your own what's lawful and what's unlawful is a position you never wanna find yourself in. If you follow an unlawful order, you're as guilty as the superior officer ordering you to do it, however if YOUR definition of what is unlawful doesn't match what your other superior officers feel is unlawful, then you're guilty of disobeying a lawful order. It's such a sticky situation. Military law is a mess but then again so is civilian law.

Fantastic video, Madison. Your Film Fridays are hitting on all cylinders. Congratulations on reaching 13,000 subscribers. I'm not sure if _A Few Good Men_ is the first Aaron Sorkin-scripted film or TV series you've watched, but considering you're a writer, I'd strongly recommend diving into more of his work. He's made some useful observations on his writing process that I don't always agree with, but are illuminating and certainly serve him well. Sorkin is big on what he calls "intention and obstacle."
"What I need before I can do anything is intention and obstacle. Okay? Someone wants something. Somebody is standing in their way of getting it. They want the money, they want the girl, they want to get to Philadelphia. It doesn’t matter, but they’ve got to really want it bad and whatever’s standing in their way has got to be formidable. I need those things and I need for them to be really solid, or else I will slip into my old habit back when I was twenty-one with the electric typewriter of just writing snappy dialogue that doesn’t add up to anything."

Fun fact, some of the dialogue shot from the back of Jack Nicholson's head was added in with the assistant attorney (Kevin Pollack) doing a Jack Nicholson impression. Nicholson's lines were completed, and he costs a fortune a second to be on set. Rather than bring him back, they asked if Pollack could do the lines, and Nicholson agreed. Pollack was a comedian who did impressions in his early career. He was pretty good. He would do famous roles as if played by different actors, and it was great.

As a veteran I am so happy you watched this movie. "The we were supposed to fight for Willie" gets me every time. Yes, this is exactly right. I loved your reaction. Conduct unbecoming a US. Marine unfortunately the military has standards of honor, integrity, etc. so that is the only charge really, they failed, but the poor men were misled and used as scapegoats. The military does allow for you NOT to follow an unlawful order, but even then, you may pay consequences in the moment for not following an order, but in the end not following an unlawful order means not being held accountable or brought up on criminal charges. For Demi Moore's character she wasn't selected not because she wasn't a woman, but because they knew she would fight, and they wanted the cast swept under the rug. This cast was amazing. Demi was great she knew she wasn't lead but she saw potential in Tom's character. I loved it. It was cute their semi flirty relationship too. Jack Nickleson always plays amazing villains.

It's the last classic from a string of classics that director Rob Reiner made in different genres from 1984 to 1992. Brutally honest here - the people responsible for Santiago's death are the medical personnel who lazily diagnosed him with heat exhaustion because they couldn't be bothered to treat their patient as a human being rather than an obstacle to them getting off work early. He co-starred with Paul Newman in The Color of Money. A film which got several Oscar noms, and for which Newman won best actor. Years earlier, a very young Paul Newman starred with Jackie Gleason in a film called The Hustler. The movie centered around a pool match between legendary Minnesota Fats (Gleason) and Fast Eddie Felson (Newman). The color of money finds an older Eddie Felson trying to teach Cruise's character the ropes. Really 2 very well done films.

Yep, the UCMJ says you’re required to follow the lawful orders of the officers appointed over you. With code reds having been prohibited, the order was not lawful. So the question becomes did Dawson and Downey know (or should have known through reasonable diligence) about the order banning code reds. Apparently the jury believed so.

Great commentary on an all time classic. I know another great court drama that not many people know about. 'Breaker' Morant, about the Boer war in South Africa in 1903. No happy ending, I am so to say, but a classic. Plus I haven't seen anyone on CZcams do Charlie Wilson's War, a great Tom Hanks movie about the CIA supporting the Afghans against Russia in the 80s

This was a really great video.
It’s such a delight to see your raw and honest response to such excellent filmmaking.
And I really appreciated your personal thoughts on Tom Cruise as an actor.
Your acknowledgment and appreciation for his honed skills at his craft.
There is a weird flow in the ether of how people perceive him.
He’s a brilliant actor who’s made many extraordinary films.
    Going to recommend two of
    Tom Cruise’s greatest performances.
“Born on the Fourth of July” (1989)
    “Interview With a Vampire” (1994)
    Both these films are extraordinary.
And Tom Cruise is as you’ve never seen him in both of them.

The film was written as a Broadway play by Aaron Sorkin, who was also the creator/writer for The West Wing, The Social Network, Newsroom, The American President and many other award-winning shows and films. It was also directed by Rob Reiner. Excellent film! I love Sorkin's stuff. I'm a huge fan of The West Wing and Newsroom.

I'm really enjoying your reactions. This is a great film. Another you might like is A Time To Kill based on the book by John Grisham.
Kiefer Sutherland is such a great actor. He plays a bad guy so well. I'm sure he's probably super nice in real life (I hope he is), but he nails the bad and creepy roles perfectly.
Looking forward to more reactions from you.

I really like how how you take the time to actually get into and enjoy the movies you watch without the constant talking throughout. I understand that you reactors have to do a certain amount due to copywrite but some of the people can't seem to stfu long enough and dig the movie which makes them miss what's going on. Btw I love this movie as well and have watched it a ton of times. Should watch Spinal Tap also directed by Rob Reiner and is a great comedy.

The US military does not employ terms like Code Red. As someone who grew up on a Marine Base, if there were an individual displaying certain behavior, then the other Marines or Soldiers would give that individual what they called (an attitude adjustment). Either that person would get with the program or that person would NOT be allowed anywhere near guns or any kind of ordinance.

And you're right, even though it would be very hard, if a person in the US military gets an unlawful order they are obligated to refuse.
Also, I think that you would probably like Tom Cruise in Born on the 4th of July and Interview with a Vampire, also starring Brad Pitt.
    Again, GREAT reaction!!! Huh

I have to say, I really appreciate Madison's reaction style. You can tell she genuinely pays attention to the movie and gets involved, because she goes for really long stretches saying nothing. I mean, I get why the "other kind" of reactor is popular, the ones with flamboyant personalities who always have funny quips. But sometimes they drive me crazy because it feels like they're barely paying attention to the movie and are just trying to put on a performance themselves.

Knowing where it would end up, I chuckled when you latched on to "the right man for the job". Also, the exchange between Jo & Sam about their attitudes perfectly summed up where Jessup went wrong. He may well have been a good Marine at some point, but he forgot why he was on that wall.

For another good court drama you should watch "12 Angry Men" (1957). Granted it's an older, B&W movie shot mostly on one set, but it has many great actors from that period including Henry Fonda playing the lead, and a story you will get really wrapped up in. Saw you've done only one '50s movie (Rear Window), and it would be a good addition to your video library from that decade.
