For those confused, there are many Delhi overlapping each other.
There is old Delhi, new Delhi, union territory of Delhi, NCR Delhi, Delhi metro.
What about Cleveland's dehi
What about hongkong delhi
New California Republic Delhi? did the NCR got from Vegas to India? (joke)
@@yuyoshida2076 wow
What about my local Delhi store?
As an Indian just wanted to say that the greater Delhi metropolitan area has easily more than 25 mil people(the number varies on how u divide the city)
If you count greater metropolitan areas there would be many uncertainties because no country divides it the same. Paris for example would be more around 12M instead of 2M.
all of it is included in the city of new delhi so idk if division of city makes any difference
Bro's indian 💀💀💀
yeah beacause isnt there a difference between dehli snd newdehli?
Delhi can refer to the union territory or old delhi or the whole metropoilition area
The Thing, that often throws you off, especially in Europe is the city versus metropolitan area. Often the capital has outgrown the historical political borders and if the capitals area wasn‘t expanded the population seems low, because politicly people live in a neigbouring town, not the capital itself
The same case with Delhi vs New Delhi
The population of Paris was at it's peak right before WW1 start with 2.8 Millions inhabitants (It was the most populated department back then) ,then it's population dropped until today where is has 2.12 Million inhabitants (It's the 2nd most populated department nowadays ,behind The Nord (aka The North),Lille department, which is the most Northern French department ,has a frontier with Belgium and it has 2.6 Millions inhabitants .
The only other department that have more than 2 Million inhabitants is the Bouches-du-Rhône (Marseille Department) ,which has 2.04 Million inhabitants ,then in 4th position ,it's the Rhône department (Lyon Department) that possess 1.87 Million inhabitants .
Prime example is Athens Greece
By city proper the source the site uses its 660 thousand by urban, metro and by the people that live in it it's 3,15-4 million people
Interesting thing is that, in croatia its the oposite, boath the old tow and new zagreb count to the population, Also its the only city to have the status of county becpuse of its population
The main difference between Paris and London (and this difference actually applies to every city in France and England), is that the administrative limits of Paris are a lot more restrictive than London's. If you count the metropolitan area, they are very comparable, both between 10 M and 12 M. And if you take that into account, depending on the definition, Paris can be bigger than London.
7:21 the reason india's was so little is because New Delhi (the capital) is only one of 11 districts of Delhi. Delhi as a whole has a population of 32 million
This is news to me, doesn't New Delhi cover all of these districts?
@@onose10000 No, the main metropolitan area is Delhi and New Delhi is one of it's districts which also serves as the capital city.
@@faizsayyed5161 ok, thanks. 😅
E
I was wondering why, thanks
The problem is that the capital's population doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the population of the nation. Frequently capitals are separate administrative centers so they're not in the middle of big crowded cities... but sometimes they're in the middle of big crowded cities.
more like a large portion
The India one even me as an Indian got wrong. Because people Usually think Delhi is the capital but technically speaking Delhi is a territory and New Delhi is a city inside the Territory. As a whole the Territory (which is technically a city) has 31 million people but the area regarded as the capital only has 200k. It's like the difference between "London" and the "City of London".
Same. But the City of London is not the capital of the UK, just London is. I think I wouldn't consider New Delhi to be a city, more like a government territory that controls India and is just part of Delhi, an actual city with smaller cities making it up like Delhi Municipal Corporation, Old Dehli, etc.
Drew is actually correct, but technically incorrect.
@@Aarav.B Yeah, I guess you are right
Well the thing is that London has 9millions inhabitants when Paris has "only" 2.1millions.
BUT london metropolitan area has 14.3millions inhabitants when Paris metropolitan area has 14.7millions inhabitants
yeah really depends on what number they pick, city limits can make for some really low population while the sprawl may be huge
As a french i thought in PARIS alone we were 5 millions. But I know paris is not expanding, only the metropolitan so yea I was surprised Paris alone was so small.
Makes sense why London is more populated than our City of Light Paris if you include immigrants that want to speak English
Yeah if you get pedantic with city limits London only has ~10k
Same for Delhi. The total population of Delhi stands at 32 million
9:41 I love how he got a gif of borat shaking his head after guessing Kazakhstan wrong lol
Brussels City has a "very low" population (still top 10 in Belgium) but the area that's considered Brussels is the Brussels Capital Region which has about 1,3 million people and the Brussels Metropolitan area is at about 2 million... City population really depends on what is considered the city limits...
Yeah same goes for paris, the city itself has 2 million but the metropolitan area is 10 million
@@francy3643 the brussels capital region has the same size as Paris and the metropolitan area of Paris has the same size as belgium so 😭
Technically Brussels is not even the largest city in Brussels... wich just shows it is indeed all about how municipalities and administration is done.
Brussel is wel de grootste gemeente in het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest ;)
The same happens to Mexico city, the city limits hold 9 million but the metro area holds 22 million people
New Delhi - ~250k (its actually hard to verify since different sources state different numbers)
Delhi (all 11 districts) - 16-20 million
Delhi metropolitan (continuous urban agglomeration)(Delhi+suburbs) - 32 million
Delhi NCR (National Capital region) - 46-50 million
10:54 Switzerland is rather densely populated in the plateau, but it is not compacted into cities, but more like one stretched agglomeration from lake constanz to lake geneva. And Bern is only the 5th largest city in Switzerland
Jack: **Don’t Want To Learn the Capitals**
Drew: *”Fine, I’ll Do It Myself”*
The population of a city can vary wildly because you can say the population of the city itself or of its metropolitan area.
Delhi metropolitan area (NCR) has population of 32 million consisting of 11 districts and one of which is New Delhi (capital) that's why it's has 249k population.

Whoa, Drew.😏😏😏
A lot of this depends on how you define a city area. A lot of European Cities are much bigger than the official city area with suburbs etc. Greater London is huge so is Greater Paris..
As an Irish woman, in Dublin, I can tell you these statistics are form 2016 ... The current population is at 1,256,000 but both estimates to me sound low... I was sure we had a million in Dublin even earlier then 2016 ... However suffice to say our capitals population is well over that number...
Dublin population in 2022 is actually 1.4 million (for the whole county).
On the wiki for the city, there is 500,000 in the capital, but the number extends to 2,100,000 in the greater dublin area
@@SporeMurph google said in Dublin city 2022 1,256,000 was the population number . As for the whole island its currently 5,123,536 we had a census very recently this year.
7:23 Indian capital holds a lot of ppl about 16 million, but that's actually Delhi a semi state, which is composed of seven districts
And the capital is one of it's district called New Delhi or NTC (national capital territory) population 249k
So the capital of India is a quite big city practically, but not on paper
And there is another thing called NCR (national capital region) which is way more bigger with a population of about 46 million
Edit: even many Indians in comments are confused b/w Delhi, NCT and NCR lmao
Would you consider NCR 1 city. Or a bunch of cities next to each other.
If they have only a single mayor then I guess you could argue that. The entire thing is the capital.
@@Jose.AFT.Saddul i would say NCR consists of different cities because even thane is considered a seperate city and not a part of mumbai
@@Jose.AFT.Saddul Yup there are some debates on this matter to make New Delhi a single territory on itself directly under Central government and grant Delhi full statehood
But there's no such need in reality for it because Delhi State is too small so everyone ignore it
And NCR is a complex thing, it includes territory from two states other than Delhi who won't give up their cities, so we can't make it a bigger state
The fact is solving this unnecessary issue will cost more money and time than continuing it
@@Jose.AFT.Saddul ncr is 50 million and 55000 km.
Its too large to be city.
If it is a city, then it is bigger in area than many countries.
When they talk about delhi as largest city, they show UT plus some closely attached neighbor according to UN which makes it 31 million
@@reddragon100 there are some big cities out there. China has a city called Hulunbuir. That’s 269 953 square kilometers. Or like 6 times larger than the NCR.
I think they broke up NCR Into smaller cities because the population is to large to be handled by a single city.

The thing is that different countries define their capital cities differently. The Greater London area counts in quite a few suburbs, while New Delhi's area excludes the majority of the metropolitan area.
Love these videos drew
Thank you Drew for thinking so hard to make a good video.
The problem is city population is really arbitrary. Different countries define city boundaries differently. This would work better if it used metro area population instead of just official city population, as it's more comparable across national boundaries.
Like Pyongyang vs Buenos Aires is a little bit ridiculous. The official city populations are close, but the metro areas aren't even remotely close. Pyongyang has about 3.25 million in its metro area. Buenos Aires has almost 16 million.

As a general rule of thumb if the capitol is an oasis of some sort in the wilderness a lot of people live in the capitol. I'm not just talking about deserty countries I'm talking about countries with uninhabitable wilderness in general covering most of the land scape with a notable exception in the capitol. some of these are difficult because it all depends on how much land you consider to be a part of the capital. for example, the philippines' manila could have anywhere from 1.6M to 14.4M depending on what you define as Manila. same for ones like india too, for example
London and Paris actually have similar population but the quiz only counts city proper and not the metropolitan area

Bolivia's capital has a small population because during a civil war, another city (La Paz) essentially took almost all the capital stuff from it. 6:58 That's because the actual city of Brussels, the municipality, is actually pretty small in area, yet still very densely populated (187000 people on an area of just 33 square km), but because of the small area, the number of people seems very low.
When we're talking about "the Brussels" most people know and refer to when they're talking about the Belgian capital, they refer to the Brussels Capital Region, which is actually also still relatively pretty small - only 162 square km, the size of a city, but which is still relatively kinda small for a capital city - but has a population of over 1.2 million people, which is huge for this relatively small area and shows how densely populated this area actually is. The Brussels Capital Region also just feels and seems like it is one city (which it should be too imo).
You could kinda compare the Brussels Capital Region to the District of Columbia in the US, and the actual city of Brussels with the city of Washington D.C., with the big difference that Washington D.C. is the only city in the District of Columbia, while Brussels is the biggest one but one among 18 other municipalities in the BCR.
You could compare this low number of Brussels with New Dehlis low number, it's the same situation. This solely represents the number of the actual municipality, ignoring the "actual" population. (Still not necessarily the same as metropolitan areas btw, because these cities are still in capital city states/territories/districts/regions/etc..

This game is tricky, because, first, the capital city might not be the most populated city, and second, it kinda also depends how they define the city in the first place, and they might not include a big portion of the metropolitan area. For instance, I was surprised by the Paris one, but that's because the metropolitan area of Paris has a population of 14.6 million. The city itself "only" has 2.1 million. Meanwhile, London has a population of 9 million, and its metropolitan area has 14.3 million. So despite the two metropolitan areas being comparable, just because the way the city is defined is different, there is a huge gap between the two for the cities themselves.

well, places like berlin or london include basically everything attached to the city, while places like manila and brussels and paris and new delhi are really only a part of the actual city they're in. its like the difference between LA city and LA county.
cities like islamabad, pakistan or dodoma, tanzania are so small because they're new capitals, either planned cities or small cities chosen for their location. DC is both.
