Decided against VW myself due to cost and converted my imported Nissan Elgrand van with 37800 miles, 3.5L V6 250bhp, selectable 4x4 with electronic Diff locks and electronic 4x4 modes. Comes with Full leather interior, surround cameras with birds eye view for security, swivel captains chairs, BOSE surround sound system, electric drop down TV screens etc.
Purchase price + import costs + conversion (built myself) came to about £13000.
Its also alot of fun at the lights to unsuspecting boy racers..
One thing for sure, any car you bought for the 30k will be worth a fraction of what the camper will be worth in 5yrs time and you’ll have so much fun in it. Cracking job Dan!

As nice as your van is, camping for me is about having fun outdoors for a little as possible. A basically insulated and carpet lined van with a mattress slung in the back, a cheap little gas cooker and a few folding chairs, and you will have just as much fun if not more with a bit of cash left in the bank lol. But credit where credits due cracking job mate 👍
Great job mate. We never get back what we spend on these vans, but I don’t think that’s the point. You build it so you can create memories in something you are proud of, and you’ve definitely done that! Keep up

Van is brilliant, thanks for putting the costings together. Just goes to show how much all the hidden bits and pieces cost. Like you say, you build a van to suit your wallet. Some people might just throw a mattress in the back whilst others spec it to the max. Main thing is you've built something that does exactly what you want it to do, and looks great.

Camper is superb Dan, 30k is reasonable for a bespoke van with everything you wanted, it’s also very saleable to others despite its uniqueness

The fun part of the process is the build and knowing what you do and don't need/want. Using trusted businesses along the way and building relationships. £30k to have a ready to go home from home is amazing. What does £30k get you in today's world? A new Audi A4? Awesome content, really enjoyed it! I'm in the process of pricing up a conversion for my T5.1 🤙

This is why I went and brought and California 8 years ago, it was cheaper to buy a factory built one than it was built it, also everything inside the van fell into the 3 year warranty, not like buy non gen equipment and wish for the best. My California is still reforming perfectly even after 8 years of fun on the road, I will say you can't take away the fun of building your own dream as you wish it to, Quote this post is not to dis your own dream and it's been fun watching you forfill that dream, I wish all the best and enjoyment with what you have created, but for some it maybe easier to make other choices. Thanks for creative content.
I like it Dan. The price is irrelevant when you love something but it's not surprising with prices of most things lately. As you said, the price of a factory new build is mega bucks. This way you've had an active role in customisation 👍

Didn’t really know how much this kind of build costs…eye opening to say the least, Dan. Great breakdown of the costs involved; considering you’d have to add labour costs makes it even more understandable when you are browsing ebay for a completed one! Anyway, now time to enjoy it; I’m sure you are going to have some memorable trips in it, mate.👊

Yep I just dropped 45k inc vat on a 1 yr old highline DSG Kombi + 20K on the build... That's the way it goes I'm afraid! Worth it if you enjoy every day in it! I will when I collect mine...
People really don't appreciate how much these things cost to build until they've done it, it's all the little bits that add up to alarming amounts, since building mine I have a new appreciation for how much converters charge.
I'd say if you were to put labour costs into that you'd be talking at least £5000 so it's a great saving been able to do the work yourself. Thanks for sharing all that with us Dan so are we back on the polo for the next one.

How did you wire the fridge in? I connected mine using 4.5mm twin cable (2mtrs) with an inline fuse direct to the battery and the cable supplied with the fridge but I’m getting an F1 error message which appears to be something to do with voltage🤔
Thanks for watching bud, glad you enjoy them! Mine is wired in on 2.5mm cable into a fusebox. Strange one, not had any issues with mine.

Am 10k ish on my 2014 plate sprinter high milage van way second hand lower milage engine a finished putting in and getting running still need spend anougher 5 on body work and a few bits here snd there but still cheap

Scary when you add it up, but it's worth more to you than £30k. Plus look at some who have spent £50k, £70k plus... we're all having the same fun!

You’d make your money back if you sold it, but as you said the price that you paid was based on CZcamsr prices, although even with the discount codes that you’ve shared there’s still money to be saved, for people who watch the channel. great content watching you build the van
Can you get the air ride to level the van out for when you park up and camp on uneven surfaces.
You can to an extent yes. The 2 sides are still connected by the anti roll bar so there isn’t a massive amount of movement side to side.

Most people would only get the van, air ride & pop top for 30k so I think yours is still cheap 👌🏻
So in a nutshell nothing is cheap anymore. Glad I built mine before covid 😮

Nope it's bloody awful, heavy & terrible economy
Cheaper to buy an actual motorhome on a t5 chassis and have lots more space, nicer bigger bed a proper toilet, shower,kitchen etc etc. converted van prices are laughable tbh.

Those who say get a motorhome don't understand flexibility of a campervan. You can go where you want and park in normal carpark spaces. Alternatively you CAN park 3 miles outside town on an industrial estate or in the B&Q carpark with the builders vans😢
A t5 isn't a motorhome , if you think they're the same you really don't understand the whole t5 scene,
Why not just book a b&b if that's the way your looking at it 🤦♂️
Owning a t5 is a way of life, Its the family daily to go to work drop kids off in school then go down the beach on the weekend

Rubber seals to make the dirt closing sound like a golf is probably the most ridiculous purchase I’ve ever heard of
Its a common modification, people prefer the sound of a nice car door to the sound of a trades mans van. You close the door on £30k you dont want it to sound like closing the wheelie bin.

That's a long list of overpriced rrp products with epic dub tax... I guess much of the sponsorships offered, are so you don't show the fan base cheaper alternatives, which is a shame as it feels like a 12 week advert.. I appreciate you gotta get paid, we all love free/discounted stuff, I enjoy the content, but there's less to take away from this one... I just watched a budget self build that cost 30k, I'm actually mind-blown..

Yes I was sponsored some items but the van is exactly the way I would build it had I had to pay RRP for everything. I may do a budget build at some point but this build was always for myself and is build with the parts I wanted.
