I first quit my day job to freelance and went back to my old job after six months.
Six months later, I quit the same job again. That was five years ago.
I’m 2 years late, but in case someone comes across this, this is one of the most realistic responses. I’ve been freelancing for a few years and just got my first real full time job as a producer in news. One of the reasons why I took it was because I wanted to invest more money into my freelance work/equipment and I just needed a break from the grind. Plus it paid more than what I was making lol. I’m young, but I know this is only temporary because I know I can’t do this for more than 2 years lol😂 plus you never know where that 9-5 could take you💯

Matti! Man, I needed this. Thank you for posting. I’m fairly confident I meet all of the conditions you mentioned. It’s scary taking that leap but the time is now.
I already quit about 8 months ago... it's not an easy path to pursue but I've never felt more fulfilled in my life. Poor but happy hahahaha. Hugs!
Great insight here, Matti! I can relate to a lot of what you said about freelancing. For me, since I'm not living on my own yet and I don't have a family to provide for, I've been doing some freelancing to get a feel for it. It's awesome to get paid to do what I love! But it does take a lot of discipline to balance with school.

Matti I didn’t know you came from a church media background!! Super comforting and encouraging. Sometimes feels impossible to “break out” of the church world to make a name for yourself in the visual storyteller niche.
I was so scared to actually take the leap into going full-time in my business doing photography! I had so many people telling me you're ready before you think you are and I thin that's so true. I actually got fired from my last job which I took as a MASSIVE sign it was my time to actually give this thing a go. And it's been the best thing that ever happened! :)
I was just having this discussion with my wife and when I opened CZcams this video was at the top. What a coincidence Matti. Great points and almost all points do have a checkmark for me but it's still a bit scary to take that leap 😓
The biggest thing for me is that with time commitments that come with the job I have, its bloody hard to get out there and do the work I need to do to break away. Also assuaging the fears of family members is pretty hard. Not gonna give up though!
I have a business that is bringing me an almost passive income. When someone calls in sick or go on vacation, I have to go in and cover (not often). I have it good right now but I don't know how long it will last. I spent the past two years Freelancing doing video work for small companies. I've made a decision to not take on anymore Freelance jobs to focus more on my CZcams Channel. You and Peter are truly inspirational to me! Thank you for being awesome. From another Canadian.

Incredible timing. Been working at a church for 4 years as the Communications Director (video production, live production, photography, graphic design, web design, social media). On the side I have a media company and this is year it has began to overtake my church job both in money and amount of work. That's hard to do considering I have a lot of tasks at my church job. Anyways, big decisions to make in the next year or so! Great video Matti!

I recently graduated art school as a filmmaker. I actually chose to look for employment first. In my country, employees are decently well protected. You can't just get fired.
And I fall into the catagory of people who get stressed by the unknown. I want to be sure I'll have income the next month.
I also don't like aquisition. Taking that initiative and getting the gigs is really hard for me.
So I'll be working for a company for now and I'll feel happy doing it.
Bro- you’ve created some phenomenal content, but this video set your content over the top. I’m in Alaska and am in a major/calculated transition to freelancing. Thank you so much for this.
Also, that "comfortable, cushy, reliable job" isn't necessarily what it used to be due to layoffs and economic uncertainty. There can be much more financial stability in a solopreneur or freelance lifestyle. The perception of comfort is a paradox. If you're a lawyer working a salaried job at 80-100 hours per week, you would make more per hour and work less on your own versus at a corporate firm. I've been working for myself since 2005 and only tried out a "regular job" once for 2 weeks and never went back. If it "doesn't work out," you can always go back to the status quo, standard 9-to-5. With sufficient planning, it's possible for more people to achieve this than they might think.
I'm not ready to take freelance full time yet, I am working to it, but for now I need to continue to work on my craft.
In general, I completely agree with most your tips, plus have 2 more. (1) Being good at what you do and (2) Proof of concept/already making money are both good indicators. As well as (3) your motivation or "why" - the reasons have to be legit and personal! Regarding (4) diversified skill sets - not necessarily. If you focus on one niche and become an expert in one field, you can dominate one form of video production without spreading yourself too thin. I was successful starting out with 1 revenue stream and adding more as I went alone. There's a reason why "jack of all trades/master of none" is a thing. (5) too much work is also a good indicator that you're good at what you do and the potential to work for yourself is there. HOWEVER - I would also add that (6) people should have a really good idea of their finances before freelancing (what they need to live and run their businesses, also doing their taxes and tracking expenses), (7) try doing it part-time as a side hustle before "taking the leap" and also to ensure that they will be extremely organized and self-motivated without the structure of a boss or corporate environment. You have to have a plan and be okay with being self-reliant.
I say quit your job if it's not making you a better person.
But sometimes you just need to pay the bills too

Matti, the reason so many people are becoming freelancers is because the technology now exists for people to support themselves in other ways outside of traditional jobs. My friend estimates there can be 1 Billion freelancers by 2035. The gig economy isn't even that new - human beings have been freelancing since the beginning of time. The industrial revolution is the 1st time that today's reality of office and factory jobs became "normal." I actually just made a video on the "Worst Jobs for Digital Nomads" and to be honest, being a CZcamsr made the cut for worst ways to make money because it takes so long to monetize. That being said, I encourage anyone who wants to work for themselves or for a distributed company to pursue it in some way. I've been a "digital nomad" for over 13 years now and it's honestly the best thing I ever did.
You're right; the freedom that freelancing or working for yourself provides is an unparalleled feeling. That's also #1 on my list in another blog/video I just published on "The Best Things About Being a Digital Nomad." I write/talk/make content about this topic full time if you want to collab or get more info on how to help people achieve or sustain the remote work/location independent lifestyle.

I was absolutely terrified about going full time freelance. But then something changed at work that convinced me to quit and follow my dream. This was 1 year ago, and it was the best decision I have ever made.
Your b roll is always OFF. THE. CHAIN. Also I managed to find a justifiable ‘part time job’ editing and doing social media - so that I cover a couple of basics! Then smashing the freelance films the rest of the week! Can’t wait to go full time for myself soon!

Can’t believe i saw this video on the day I needed the most confirmation from the Lord. Thanks Matti, I have been considering going full time for too long. I have just been to scared to do it. I already have contracts with several company’s and I have a steady amount of weddings each month. Just have been too scared to leave my job. I love the people I work with and have invested a lot of time and work there. I am going to keep praying on how to break the news to my boss. I still want to be a blessing for the remaining time I am there but I know I need to go and pursue my dream. Thanks Matti for the inspiration!

I quit my job recently as a manager to focus on Photography FULL TIME and have my last day on Sept 8th. I'm so happy that I took the chance, and I'm ready to work for myself, but it absolutely was terrified.
I left my job a few years ago, and I was absolutely not ready. Listening to this video is great though. Seriously. Gotta be honest with yourself about your own discipline and work ethic. I have spent a few years working into it (and was lucky enough to have the money saved from my previous career to support myself as I grew). I'm happier now that I ever was in an office job, but I have a LONG way to go before I can start calling it a successful venture. And I'm very happily fighting my way down that road of slow growth.

Super solid advice. I had anxiety about quitting to freelance full time a few months ago, but realized it wasn't time. And I'm ok with that. I have a good job doing what I love to do any way and have a great opportunity to invest in my skills. I've decided to wait until I'm seeing things like Matti mentioned, like people asking, having too much work, and making the same or more than I am at my job. I have a little bit to go, but I'm excited to take that leap.

I left my full time job of 11 years a couple of months back to pursue Photography & Videography. It's scary but so far I'm getting decent amount of work from mainly weddings :) - Can't wait for the tail end of the year when I can focus on my CZcams to break that 1,000 mark and keep it rising!
Who hates you guys? You all do so much positive things to help people learn new things. You all played a significant role when decided to jump into video making. Because of that influence, I was able to quit my barista job to work for an Arcade full time doing photo and video for their social media. Since day one, I’ve been having a blast doing it while paying down my debt and still doing some side freelance gigs. One of my bosses went to film school and is also teaching me some of the stuff he learned as well like story building, shot lists etc. While I technically don’t work for myself, I am working for someone who does value me as a person and my skills. I am also learning so much more about film making so when the day comes when I feel confident to go out on my own, I’ll have the skills to survive. I do agree with your points and I should definitely diversify a bit more. Thanks for sharing this with us Matti, keep on inspiring!

Nice video, I left a 13 year career in Jan to start a videography company. But I’m not a freelancer and a hate that word now as much as I did nearly two decades ago when I attended art school. If you own your own business you’re a business owner! I owned my last business, now I do something else and I own that too. Freelancing sounds like something you do while you live at your parents house while getting paid only in cash so you don’t have to report it. Just my $.02.
i worked in a warehouse for years and in may i quit and moved to Utah in hope to be able to start doing videography full time.... aaand it didnt really work .. i was incredibly lazy about it, so i moved back to Boise and ive been working harder because i have more connections here and its been going great! im excited for the future.

To answer your question at the beginning, the reason that so many people are becoming freelancers now is because the technology exists to allow people to do their jobs from anywhere. In fact, humans have been freelancing since the beginning of time. It's only since the Industrial Revolution that working in office buildings and factories became "normal jobs." One of my fellow digital nomad friends has calculated that there may be up to 1 Billion freelancers on the planet by 2035. Once corporate culture catches up with modern-day reality and it becomes socially acceptable again to work for yourself, there will be a boom in the amount of freelancers and remote workers around the planet. I study these topics day in and day out for my own job. It's super interesting and an exciting time to be alive. I have been working for myself since 2005 and wouldn't have it any other way! FREEDOM is by far the #1 perk of the lifestyle.
Great points! I've been a freelance musician since the age of 15. But I became a full time freelance musician at around the age of 24. I agree with everything you have said. I also began learning about photography/videography at the age of 25. I only just started making money out of it now at the age of 30. I think for my future, I would like to split my work between music and photography. I love both!

Yep, and to add to the "wait till you're making as much money freelancing as you are in your day job," also, freelance for at least a year (still following the money rule) to see if you can sustain that income. This way, you can see your slow parts of the year and not quit your day job until you know that you can make money on a monthly basis as a freelancer, instead of just having a good month then quitting. It is a good amount of time, but it's better to be safe than sorry and if you're planning on going freelance permanently, its good to lay the groundwork first.

So important to be in it for the right reasons! I'm freelancing in photo and video whilst I'm at university - my degree is actually biology but I want to set myself up in a career as a creator because that's where my real passion is :) making crazy progress at the moment so I can't wait to see where I'm at when I graduate next summer!

Matti, I had a very successful restaurant for over 20 years. Had a wonderful friend who was a doctor. He loved to bake. Hatted the whole medical bull that he had to deal with everyday. I used to let him use my ovens in the evening after we closed. He was a master baker. Ended up quitting his practice and following his dreams became a baker and ended up one of the most cellebrated bakers in the states. He is happier now than he was ever doing prostrate exams. the moral of the story is follow your dreams.....you can always make more money,,, but you cant buy one minute of time.

Right right Matti, it's important to have a clear goal and understanding why you wanna do it. Not just because everybody starts doing it. Especially gaining their audience in non-authentic ways ( i guess you know what we mean).
How about sharing some tips about growing your community in a fair way? It's easy to fall for easy ways to grow the follower's count.

I'd be really glad if Matti or even someone else can help me out at this point. I know that it's completely my decision, but I can ofcourse use some piece of advice from all of you.
I'm currently studying Mechanical Engineering abroad in Germany and to be really honest I'm neither enjoying the curriculum, nor being able to handle it on my own. I have been looking at this Engineering field so as to have good financial security for my future as I'm adequately good in science and math. However, I know for sure where my heart lies. It lies in videography, it lies in expressing myself or sharing and creating stories. I write well and I also can shoot decent video as of now. However I want to polish my skills and I'm considering quitting my Bachelors (I've just completed my 1st year) to take up Cinematography for Bachelors instead.
That being said I'm very nervous about taking this step, and don't know if it's the right thing to do. I know that it will 100% keep me happy as I'll be following my deep lying passion. I cannot stop thinking about Cinematography at any point of time. It's in my mind 24/7 and it keeps poking me. I find myself in this position at the moment and can really help myself with some of your words.

Matti you make some very good points in this video. I hope to someday be able to get to a stage where I can freelance and work for myself - that's the ultimate dream. I can only imagine that having that freedom is incredible and that is what is lighting my fire to keep pushing to get to that stage, hence why I started a CZcams channel and have decided to register myself as a Sole Trader to take that first step! It's a scary thought to not have that financial security of full time employment but I'm sure the rewards are well worth the gamble once you take that leap. I'm trying to generate business through uploading to my Instagram and making CZcams videos so any love you could send my way would be so much appreciated! Keep doing your thing and inspiring us all!

Personally, I would like to freelance one day and I fulfill 80% of the requirements you listed, but at the moment it just doesn't make sense for me. My plan is to get a job at a friend, who's shooting commercials, events and stuff like that and with the money I earn there, realise my own projects in the free time.

Wow...I actually worked in a church...and my work involved marketing and videography and photography a little bit...and I had this passion for editing and animating, mostly...and suddenly I find myself in the situation of not having enough time to take the work that people asked me to do outside...and started to be hired and paid for direct clients and also some producers...and had to ask for permission in my full time work to make this camera o editing work for example...that was the triger for my freelancing about 6 months ago...and I´m full of work and developing myself and growing as cameraman, editor and photographer 👊😄
