The starter bendix just pulls out. The flywheel bolt uses a 22mm socket (normal rotation). You need a puller to get the flywheel off.

You should make a brush guard for the front of it

Also check your air box lid if it is leaking it will also cause that issue put some tape around it just to make sure

It was the ignition switch shorting out.

    Hey Mossman,
You wouldnt happen to have a wiring diagram for this Ranger?

+Tim Gile I had a repair CD for the this Ranger but it won't work anymore so I can't look anything up. What problem or what are you wanting to know?

I bought a manual and it says wiring diagram is on page number xyz and nothing is there.
I took engine out and rebuilt it. Putting it back together I have a yellow wire with brown line that I cant remember where it went.

+Tim Gile I don't have this ranger anymore but I do have a 2003 6x6. I will look under the seat and see where that wire is. I am guessing it's under the seat and around the engine?

Yes it is under the seat. the y/br wire runs up under the hood to a box that looks like a regulator but it isnt
      the regulator.

+Tim Gile The boxes up front are the regulator and the rev limiter. Mine has another box but I think that has to do with the governor that is on my professional series ranger that limited it to 25mph.

A bad spark plug will do the exact same thing

I was trying to fix a random cutting out issue. There is NO WAY to test for the problem because it would happen and by the time I got the seat off the problem went away. I tried many things trying to find the issue. It turned out to be the key switch shorting out whenever it wanted. I could care less what you think I know.

@@mossman381 Mine does the same thing. It will quit and not start. Pull it back home and it will start up again. Impossible to find.
