Polaris Ranger 500 Gas Tank Removal & Cleaning "Cutting out problem Continues"

  • Here I remove the tank to clean it out thinking something is blocking the pickup. I did clean out some debris, including a pretty big flying ant. Found that someone had cut out the screen too. More evidence that this ranger has had this problem for awhile. The ranger still cuts out every 3-4 days even after I cleaned the tank.

I just got a 06 500 Ranger from a police auction for $900 it has about 790 hours. It didn’t run when I bid on it but after I brought it home n jumped it n sprayed sum ether down its throat she fired up briefly but just couldn’t stay runnin. I think she’s got hope but I hope I didn’t make a bad buy. Good videos even thou they ten years old!

If it fired up, you probably have a fuel issue. Very common with these. New fuel pump, filter and clean the carb. The CDI goes out on these as well, but it wouldn't have fired up if that was bad.

@@mossman381 good to know ! I think I’ve watched every video of u working on these classic rangers. You might be done messing with these older units but I’ve learned a lot watching you rebuild em. Thanks again!!

Took mine in to the shop. They agree with you that it is the fuel pump. They replaced it and so far in limited use, it seems ok. It will obviously wait until it is a couple miles from the camp house at the deer lease before it decides to act up again! I'll let ya know if the problem persists. Good job on the pick up coil, looks like you finally got it!

I am need to run it tomorrow and then upload the video tomorrow night. I cleaned the pickup coil off. It had metal shavings from what looks like a starter ground up. So far so good. 7 days of no problems.

So far I have not had the cutting out problem come back. But my starter went out. If it's not one thing it's another. Hope your problem is fixed.

There is only one screw to adjust and I have it set to what the manual states. According to the spark plug it is running perfect now. Just every 3-4 days I get a cutting out problem. If the plug was fouled or something I would agree that the carb needed adjustment. It is actually running better than when I got it according to the spark plug.

Well since you've ruled out fuel then it's got to be electrical. I would guess there's a wire somewhere that's shorting out. Looked like a tough job!

Your good with that kinda stuff moss. You will figure it out. I tell ya I don't know about you but I already miss plowing in my Dmax ! Put EFI live on it 2 weeks ago with a 100hp tune. Look into doing it moss. It's a whole new truck. Still need to do the damn cp3 pump. Buried deep in there !

Vapor lock is not my problem because it has cut out on me twice as I was backing out of the driveway. There is a lot of heat under the seat. The reason why it might not vapor lock when it is new is because the machine is running perfect from the factory. Years of fuel varnishing, carb out of adjustment, old fuel pump. Might be causing a lean issue and causing vapor lock. Just a thought. If you are having issues after it is warm maybe your fuel pump is going bad. I think I have mine fixed.

Hey mossman381. I have an '04 Polaris 4x4 with a 500cc engine. Only use it on the hunting lease and only have about 250 hrs on it. I am having the exact same problem as you, mine only started a year or so back. I was hoping that you had solved the problem and was watching you go through the steps. How frustrating that you can't yet figure it out!! I read some other blogs and the idea from them is that the heat from the engine is boiling the fuel

I missed plowing a week after our last storm. I am going to get a tuner sometime. I will post a video when I do.

It wasn't that bad of a job. Just finding all the bolts and the tank was stuck to the skid plate. I am leaning towards the pickup coil being the problem. I have been all over the wiring and don't see any problems.

and causing vapor lock. There was a polaris owner in west texas that uses his in extreme heat 95-100 degrees who was also experiencing the same problem. He cut out the panel below the seat and installed a fan to increase the venting and keep the engine cooler. Haven't seen yet if it solved the problem or not, but to me the question that begs is why didn't the ranger do that for it's first several years/hours of operation? It still doesn't make sense.

The ranger uses a 160 degree thermostat stock on the 500cc engine. However the stock fan comes on around 220 F way too hot. I switched to my own switch turns the fan on at 160. Works great never vapor lock. The stock radiator is big enough to cool the ranger without needing a larger radiator. The ranger 500 and our 1937 John Deere B are the only 2 vehicles I didn't need a bigger radiator for. Oh and I am in Texas and it's hot here!

Try changing the carburater slide and diaphram if nothing else works. Can be changed from top of carb without removing the carb. Just remove the top plate of the carb.

How did you end up fixing this ranger. What was the main root of it cutting out?? Thanks for the vids!

    • @mossman381
      @mossman381  Před 8 lety

It was the ignition switch. It was shorting out I think.

I don't think Polaris would be any help. They are not known for the best customer support. It is odd that it can go so many days with no problems.

It started up fine. The machine would just cut out randomly for no reason. I never did get the cutting out on film because by the time I got my camera out the problem stopped. It was the key switch that was bad.

If ya ever have that issue again, try changing your fuel if its been sitting for more then a month if it blended. Blended gas is the worst thing iv ever seen for polaris rangers or any of them for that matter. Use methol hydrat regularly as the blended gas sucks in moister and separates after only 30 days
