Eat the puck. Drink the onion.

Onions in coffee's a very, *layered* concept. Some might call it appeeling..
I dunno, the whole idea makes me cry.
@@ross-carlson There are so many layers to it though!
A fine ogre drink.
Any way you slice it, it’s still a blooming novelty
It's all ogre now
I saw the word "onion" pop up as a notification forna Morgan Eckroth video and had a mini heart attack
Fair
Don't tell Starbucks about this. They'll add it to the menu next to the olive oil stuff
I’m kind of here for an entirely savory coffee menu
Starbucks version... onion powder with a squirt of coffee flavor.
Hear me out, sautéed onion espresso
Honestly, French onion soup made with a bit of espresso powder sounds great
As a person who only likes coffee when it’s drowned in sugar and milk, I fear that day (says the man who drinks tea more tbh lmao)
If you're already making a syrup, I wonder if you can go for a caramelized onion latte....
I was gonna say, I could almost see my way to a really creamy, buttery, caramelised onion latte but green onions no thanks 😅
Awesome. That’s the only way this would work.
That's exactly what I thought when I read the title. I've heard carmelized onion in like vanilla ice cream is pretty good, I could totally see something like a carmelized onion syrup latte or sweet cream cold brew working
That honestly sounds real good and I hate that I like that idea as much as I do 😂
Recently I toasted some green onion in the oven and it came out so freakin delicious.... that might go better with coffee
Hi! We put green onions or chives in lots of dishes in Vietnam, especially deserts! Examples are coconut banana pudding, cream of corn pudding(not soup), coconut taro pudding…good job Morgan!
I love how the video just got gradually darker the longer into these experiments you got 😂
It was an omen of the terrors to come
“$5 says I can get people to put onions in their latte” 😂😂😂
One hundred percent. No way is anyone really doing this.
There's an old recipe out of France from 1769 called coffee eggs. It's essentially scrambled eggs but instead of cream they use coffee. Would love your take on it.
There's a Sephardic jewish dish that basically marinates and cooks whole eggs (I think boiled?) in coffee grounds and onion peels. I've heard it's really good
First olive oil in coffee, now onions. We just need people to try chicken and then potatoes and we’d be able to have an entire dinner meal at your local cafe
Well, potato coffee is a thing in Korea… sweet potato is quite popular, which somewhat makes sense, but I also saw lattes with fries sort of sprinkled(??)/floating on top
Southern fried coffee
@@thelion43 or, dare I say it, Kentucky Fried Coffee! 😂
Olive oil will definitely send you to the loo
By this point it's soup with coffee in it.
"I kind of miss this dread I feel in the pit of my stomach" sounds like something an old veteran hero would say after an inexperienced teenager who is the new chosen one convinced them to get back in the saddle and ride off for one more adventure
Come back from my garden with green onions for some stir fry and the first words from this video I hear are "I have all the ingredients for this onion latte". Here's hoping it's not a room on fire I come back to...
In Taiwan there's a savory breakfast dish that's just soy milk with flaky crunchy fried dough and green onion. Adding a shot of espresso to that wouldn't be too far fetched in my mind!
Yes! I was thinking the same thing. Or the green onion ice cream that I honestly love.
I'm vegan so I instantly thought of soy milk as the best non dairy alternative to pair with an oniony flavor. That breakfast dish sounds pretty delicious though, what's it called?
I really enjoyed this video. The concept of taking a not very coffee friendly ingredient and workshopping it to fit a coffee drink is always really fun. I think this could be a series with other (viewer suggested?) ingredients.
This was my first thought seeing the video title, didn't think it'd be so green 😂
"Don't comment on my knife skills." I will thank you. Because they were perfect. Got stuff cut, you didn't get hurt, and heck you even adjusted your 'guide' hand for better safety. This sounds bad, but great job!
My Fiancé loves lattes and hates green onions. I feel like she would start a riot if she saw someone selling this in a shop.
I've been living in China for a year now and I've never seen or heard of something like this! I don't even know of anyone who likes olive oil in their coffee over here. I can't help but wonder if you stumbled upon some douyin video that viraled too close to the sun. However, absolute kudos to you for designing a drink that actually sounds interesting out of such mismatched ingredients. Really liked this video!❤
This is the same country where they created this monstrosity czcams.com/video/wNEJUB_U6c0/video.htmlsi=jsWghqy8qnOJrWbZ
I had another idea. Finely slice a white or brown onion and caramelised it until sweet and syrupy, then add to the latte. Caramelised onions have a much milder flavour and a lovely sweetness that may go well with the coffee.
You might be correct for a coffee drink but i can think of hundreds of dishes that are onion and dairy milk/ cream based
“We’re not a cooking channel” I loved that 😂
Yessssss! Good correction on the fingers when chopping those green onions ! Keep em' tucked no losing fingers today!
I'm so glad someone exists who's willing to seriously try things like this
I think it needs a bagel to accompany the first version
Perhaps a bagel for dipping
@@morgandrinkscoffee I have to say, I appreciate your cutting skills. you kept that claw grip solid. keep it slow, keep it safe
Could you use the green onion garnish as a straw?
oh god
was going to comment this!!
That’s an awesome idea for a Bloody Mary, but I don’t think this green onion latte thing should be pursued any further.
This reminds me of the garlic ice coffee drink my friend bought at some store for us to try
I had a weird dream last night where a barista asked someone if they wanted onion or milk in their coffee. Now it became a reality.
“it came to me in a vision” -technophobian2962
If the food is cut and you're not, your knife skills are fine - you're not a commercial cook.
I have never heard of this (I'm not on tiktok) and I find it HORRIFYING 🤣 props to you, Morgan, for experimenting with it!
Ok... I eat at diners quite often... and I always order coffee at a diner... many times I'll have an omelet or eggs... and sometimes those egg creations will have scallions in them... but never have I asked for the scallions on the side so I can sprinkle some on my eggs and mix the rest into my ☕️...😳😆
Saw this title and was like... "OMG EW" even though I love onions. Your reactions are priceless though. Not going to try this myself but its interesting and really pretty. Also from a former line chef, your knife skills are pretty good!
Thank you, chef 🫡
Ahh but here’s the real question: Onion latte or the taco spiced coffee of yesteryear?😂(sorry Morgan, I’ll put myself in the naughty corner now 😅)
I still have nightmares about the taco spiced coffee
Seeing the title I thought some caramelized onions couldn't hurt but the onions weren't caramelized and I believe in some small way we have all been harmed.
their face at 6:40 needs to be immortalized with "That makes me sad."
I love green onions. They're among my favorite ingredients.
I think savory ingredients in coffee are underrated; sometimes I will salt my coffee enough to not only eliminate most of the bitterness, but enough to taste a bit of salinity in the final brew.
I am still extremely skeptical of this drink, no matter how many people say it's good.
This is awesome that this content is for free on CZcams, I love your channel ❤
I wonder if it could be made more enjoyable as an alcoholic beverage. Maybe coffee liquor could overpower and mellow some of the onion flavors and you could workshop a coffee based bloody mary.
I haven't been following for too long but have really gotten a lot out of the posts so far. I couldn't help but laugh almost the whole way through this. Your expressions were by far the best part of this video. Thanks for sharing!
This was so fun to watch! And the idea of a syrup? You`re so creative
Your videos are so enjoyable yet so relaxing. :)
❤❤❤ love your channel. I thought it was SO smart to make a simple syrup and make a soda! I love that you just go for it and try to make it work, its awesome to see
You're a true friend for tasting this. Way to take one for the team.
I got a l'or espresso commercial during the video where they made a poached egg with an espresso gravy/syrup!
I… what… Morgan, do you need help? Are you ok? This is not something I would EVER think of seeing together 😂
I have a feeling coconut milk might be a good addition here! I had a Tom Yum espresso soda while I was in Poland that used chilis, lemongrass, and ... something else with coconut milk and it turned out really well.
I was also thinking about using a chashu flavor profile and going in with ginger and maybe even soy sauce???
Lol, I like your summary of 'I don't think it's awesome'. I can think of another description.... All these newfangled trends in coffee remind me a little of the fairytale, the Emperor's New Clothes. An 'influencer' comes up with an idea, add grated cheese to coffee, says it's great and then all the lemmings follow. It tastes nasty but they all nod and say how wonderful it is - except you, with an honest breakdown. Good video.
Hi Morgan ! I just wanna say that this onion latte came viral in asia because our taste bud is already familiar with green onion, just like mexican put tomato juice in drink, before this there was sweet soya sauce latte became viral in my country, so yes for sure onion latte would be very strange for non-asians, but anyways great video as always ! cheers
Sorry, I have to comment on your knife skills: they're far better than anything I'll ever have.
Missed opportunity to drink from the green onion as a straw! Ahaha! 😆 I loved this video and glad the second drink worked out.
I saw several videos of passionfruit espresso drinks that you could try! Looked intriguing..
I think this might belong to the same school of thought as something a friend of mine does.
In the UK we have "Trebor Extra Strong Mints" - he eats a couple of those and then drinks coffee
Any strong mint flavour would work - this is "takes your breath away" levels of mininess we're talking about here tho!
It definately changes the taste of the coffee - or indeed anything else you taste for about 30 mins
I watched this with mild disgust for the idea of onion coffee, and I say this both as an onion lover and a coffee lover. But it was still enjoyable, which is a testament to you! Bravo!
there is a Shrek joke to be made here lol
thank you for taking one for the team 😂
I was right there with you the entire way! You are far braver than me!!🤣🤣
Morgan's videos are a good 80% of all the times "General Kenobi" went off in my head
"This dread that I feel in the pit of my stomach", "It is most certainly not awesome", "That makes me sad", Morgan describes taking a 4D hit...
Redemption? 10:30 Pepper corns are highly soluble, heed their warning. I would defiantly chose your version over the current fad. If you plan to modify Morgan's result, you can use the onion rule of flavor, with the same 50g. The smaller the onion is processed in to, the more onion flavor will be produced.
I am tempted to build you a removable floor for sliding. Think of an 8' long slip-and-slide for socks that fits between the island and counter. High gloss molding on the sides may auto center you like the kids rails at a bowling ally.
I haven’t made this recipe yet, but I think a charred flavor would go well with this. I’m going to give this a shot and take a blow torch to the onions before making the syrup.
Just in time✨
Kitchen Scissors!! I always chop green onions with kitchen Scissors! So fast so easy so fun
Say NO to Tide Pods. 😂
i think the other way to go with this would be to lean into the onion milk and make coffee chowder
When you said you were going to improve it I thought of sautéing, give it more of caramel flavor. I thought your simple syrup idea was great, so maybe try sautéing the onions then doing the syrup.
I'm Taiwanese and we love scallions. I love coffee and I am NOT going to add scallion to my coffee
as soon as you said onion and coffee the first thing that came to my mind was vietnam, albeit not in a already combined way more in a "have a coffee to your meal" way :D
Great knife skills, Morgan! 😅
Hello there!
I would like to ask, why are we not using simple syrup in coffees?
It's 2 parts sugar to 1 part water brought up to a boil and kept there for 1 minute.
It should last a long time outside the fridge if put into a clean closed container and opened to use normally!
you need to look at "kopi joss" from Indonesia. It' basically putting in a burning piping hot charcoal inside the coffee. It's have gone a long way in history and a very traditional coffee drink
“That makes me sad”
Explanation… Priceless/Hilarious
I'm a cook and your knife skills are superior to some of the people I work with.
I've not seen this viral trend until now and I'm so thankful I hadn't omg
14:47 "you know it's there" is how something like this is supposed to be. You ready could have your own restaurant, if you pair up with a chef.
Just moved to the city and am trying to find a coffee place that feels like your shorts. ❤😊
Well, those were considerably better knife skills than most celebrity "chef's" have 💁
I don't eat onion(..as well as garlic)by rather obvious reason....
It's brave to drink this...
But thanx for video Morgan
I call this latte the colon cleanser in my imaginary cafe. We had to stop selling it because people kept stopping up the toilets.
Should try burning the onions in an oil and then use the oil like an olive oil latte. The green onion gets milder and more caramel/toasty combination. At least it's a different profile when used in noodles than straight up green scallion oil.
🤔Y'know this could be more of a brunch or maybe late night drink but coffee and onions (despite it being in eggs and omelets) kinda feels like it's too much in the morning BUT I too want to try it first. Curiosity is the best thing to have for food.😁
I wonder if your modification would be even better with less of a syrup and more of just a liquid, and adding ginger to give it that Asian flavor. Maybe infuse it in some sesame oil, or put it in with the grounds in a French press or pour over.
I often drink black coffee (brewed) together with food, instead of e.g. water. Coffee works really well with food. I guess you can compare it with the thing some years ago when dark chocolate was a popular (kind of) cooking ingredient.
Pretty ok knife skills if you slide the blade more. Big part of my morning when I worked at a Jean-Georges restaurant was slicing about 10 bunches of scallions paper thin. You’re doing ok here lol
you get an idea (think its definitely gonna fail)
you think about the possibilities
you gather the ingredients
you make the drink
it works out and tastes amazing
OOF! THE SATISFACTION!
(recently happened with me, happiness was on another level. when are you doing another weird drinks video btw)
Are you supposed to muddle the green onions first before adding the liquids? I saw someone do that for this drink which might help the flavor.
I had hit a barista creative wall but I feel inspired now, ty
I just discovered you and I feel like all coffee youtubers have great hair. James Hoffman and now you!
Should I drink more coffee or become a coffee connoisseur or something to get such awesome hair
Not that I encourage this but I would have thought maybe a bit of nutmeg like you would put in Bechamel might help with the dairy onion marriage...I sure won't try it but if anybody does let me know :) :)
Thanks for using grams instead of measuring cups or something like that!
This way also someone on the other side of the ponds (or the pond and the pool or so) can follow. Not that coffee with onions would be on my "to-do-list", but thought i'll mention that anyway...
I was measuring out blueberries earlier today, hit exactly 100.0 grams, and also took a picture with my phone as proof lmao.
Normally, I'd ask who cut the onions?
But, today I ask . . . Who brewed the onions?
Okay, at first I was confused, but the moment you said "China", I feel like it makes more sense. I'm from Taiwan, and one of the jokes my friends and I make about the "uniqueness" of our Taiwanese food is topping a food item it off with chopped green onion(灑滿蔥花!). But of course, this is not limited to places in Taiwan, China most likely have regions that do that, too; and thus, the food item gain that specific 'green onion taste'.
The whole "scooping the green onions" is no different than how some of the soups are being enjoyed in our cultures as well.
At this point, I feel like people can understand that this is more of a regional-preferenced taste rather than something that appeals to the widest audience. The type of familiarity that the taste and texture evokes is probably what they are trying to achieve.
With that being said, this is all just my educated guess. If anyone actually had one of these drinks and liked it, their opinion would probably be more valid than mine. XD
Pretty good knife skills tbh
New from the makers of "Turnip Boy commits tax fraude" we proudly present "Our little Onion Boy"!!!
Did the trend originated last month? Like on the first maybe?
It's been trending in Asia because it helps you diet - it's supposed to make you lose your appetite xD
The way I kinda wanted them to use the onion garnish as a straw
Like Twizzlers.
@@nBasedAce…do people use twizzlers like straws?? [ genuine question ]
Thailand and China coffee drink variation sometimes go to the extreme length in which their neighbouring countries still feel "Nah, i'm sticking with the common ones".
You were so close to just making a French onion soup coffee
Oh wouldn't i love to see the cut video from after that first tasting 😂.
Also the sound in your new studio space is very alive and reverbie. You may neend some sound deadining material on walls out of camera
You should do this with different types of onions.
Onion?
I’ll add this to my bone-broth coffee, maybe add a crouton and cheese while I’m at it.
Cheese (fresh cheese) coffee drinks are already a thing, sooo...
What about a Taro coffee? I love milk tea with taro and brown sugar boba - what about a brown sugar latte with a tarp milk foam on top?
