24th August 2005 the National Hurricane Centre in Florida scrambled its hurricane hunter aircraft, their mission, to fly into the heart of a powerful new storm that was building over the Bahamas. It was the eleventh in a busy season and had been given the name Katrina. Like all tropical storms, Katrina was powered by the surface of the ocean, warm moist air sucked high into the atmosphere then sent speeding back down to create an immense whirlpool of supercharged wind and rain.
Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest and most destructive Atlantic tropical cyclone of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It is the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. At least 1,833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods. The most significant number of deaths occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed.
As the centre of Hurricane Katrina passed southeast of New Orleans on 29th August winds downtown were in the Category 3 range with frequent intense gusts and tidal surge. In the City of New Orleans, the storm surge caused more than 50 breaches in drainage canal levees and also in navigational canal levees and precipitated the worst engineering disaster in the history of the United States. By 31st August around 80% of New Orleans was flooded, with some parts under 15 feet of water.
Between 80 and 90 percent of the residents of New Orleans were evacuated safely in time before the hurricane struck, testifying to some of the success of the evacuation measures. The Louisiana Superdome was used to house and support some of those who were unable to evacuate. Television shots frequently focused on the Superdome as a symbol of the flooding occurring in New Orleans. The disaster had major implications for a large segment of the population, economy, and politics of the entire United States.

1,300 people died in New Orleans because of the city’s negligence. They knew for many years the levees were faulty and needed to be reconstructed..so much damage and lives lost which could have easily been avoided...Smh

Most folks who stayed done so cause they wanted to or they "didn't think it was going to be so bad." Well, guess what. as someone from louisiana, we are raised to help our neighbors no matter what bc we get hit w hurricanes almost every year. we literally have a ‘hurricane season’ thing going on. people are still living in those terrible FEMA trailers, there are places that have been shut down forever since katrina and the 2016 floods. trust even when the world won’t help us, louisiana got each other’s backs in the end

I used to get so aggravated when all I hear is “NOLA this NOLA that” when the subject of Katrina comes up. Over the years I got over it but I can at least say that Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama were all affected greatly by Katrina. However people who were not in MS during Katrina’s impact/wrath will never understand the frustration the media caused us when our MS coastal cities all looked like they were nuked by an atomic bomb - then when you talk to other people from other places about Katrina, people ask “Oh I thought the storm hit New Orleans?” -_-
During Katrina in MS, I watched a tornado touchdown and wipe out an entire FAMILY (yes you read that right!), buildings collapsing, waves of water, 9 hours of constant 120mph roaring wind, dead bodies all over the beaches, etc. and then after the storm, we lived outside for two weeks praying that it would rain cause of the heat and dehydration. That experience really messed with me physically and mentally.
Yet, the levees break in NOLA and all of a sudden (me as a MS Katrina survivor) according to the media, I was no longer classified as a Katrina victim. Don’t get me wrong, what happened in NOLA was messed up! But let me just say this, Mississippi got the brunt of the STORM, Louisiana’s main issue was the levees breaking -which was due to poor management and the priorities of the city.
No this is not a competition of who got affected more by the storm. We can ALL agree that Katrina affected us all. The point in me adding this post is because of the media. The media hates our state for some reason... I guess you would only understand if you lived here. A nuclear bomb could literally explode in the city of Biloxi and the media would somehow make it about New Orleans. It’s annoying always being the shadow of another city for no reason at all. If it’s not NOLA, it’s Mobile. 🙄 (I love both cities by the way! Nothing against you guys that live there, you know what I mean)

I know it had to be HARD for your city to SUFFER AS IT DID and to be totally disregarded. My husband at the time and brother N law came down after the storm to Biloxi(I think that's where we came too initially)they WORKED TO CLEAN UP AFTER KATRINA. We purchased our own trailer(those FEMA trailers were large/nice)but too costly and later determined to be health hazards with that Formaldehyde in them. The location in Mississippi where we parked our trailer did look like an atomic bomb had struck the area. I have my own video footage to prove it. So I know exactly what your city endured, it was HEART WRENCHING TO SEE & EXPERIENCE even arriving after the storm. So what you are saying is WARRANTED and TRUE.

YES it was Biloxi, MS where we stayed. Lance what was one of the strongest things in my mind that I saw was a LARGE!! and I do mean LARGE PIECE OF IRON or STEEL that was wrapped around a McDonald's Sign as if it was rubber!! It was something that I never knew was even POSSIBLE. You could not have told me, even SEEING IT WITH ME OWN EYES that it was possible, I WAS IN TOTAL DISBELIEF. That let us know the severity of Hurricane Katrina on Biloxi. And along that stretch of beach(I'm unfamiliar with what you all call that area), there was a church we were told was OVER 100 Years old that was totally GUTTED. And everything along that stretch for MILES was obliterated. I took photos and video because people sitting at home behind their TV screens had no idea of the REAL IMPACT. Lance this is bringing back so so many horrible memories right now for me, so I could only PRAY for what it was like for you all as actual residents of Biloxi. I know there are places in your city that probably NEVER RECOVERED or was never rebuilt by your city. One thing Hurricane Katrina showed me was the POWER OF A HURRICANE or STORM OF THAT MAGNITUDE.

yea they told us. a lot of people did leave, my family brought in some from new orleans and after it was done they moved states. we still hear from them:) some people couldn’t leave because they couldn’t afford it, didn’t think it was gonna be that bad (we get hurricanes every year. we call it ‘hurricane season’. it’s why we some weren’t worried cause it’s a common occurrence. if you lived your life constantly every summer being hit by them it wouldn’t worry you as much) , and some didn’t have anywhere else to go. there were thousands of people in that city who left. most on greyhound busses. all of multitude of reasons to stay or go

TJ Devereaux 😂 man where are you from? This is the south we have some of the oldest neighborhoods and houses in the country. Here in New Orleans most of the houses are literally 60 or 70 years old and a lot of the people live below the poverty line which means they can’t afford to make the structure stronger. Now after Katrina most homes that had to be rebuilt from the ground up are built better, but a lot of homes only got water damage which means they only fixed the inside of the home but they made no effort to stabilize the homes.

nola is known for its tiny streets in the main areas. it’s cause it was built back in the 1800’s where there were just horse drawn carriages. you can only have one line of cars at a time on those streets, mainly everyone is walking. it’s a largely historical place and a main tourist attraction for louisiana bc of that. please do research guys before jumping the gun to judge others with bad attitudes💀

Actually the city was flooding before the levees broke… I was 15 when Katrina hit. I stayed home in New Orleans east and I lived directly across the street from the levee on Lake Ponchartrain. Feet of water was pouring over the levee…
