I am from Belfast but have been in Australia for nearly 60 years. I discovered Gay Byrne in recent years and greatl.y admired him, I have read of his detractors and I can say shame on them because he seemed to me to be a very nice genuine man.
I concur 100% with Michael and Jim. Absolutely incredible interview. Gay was a one-off. We got an insight into Ian's life that few were aware of before. Two giants in different fields....an integral part of our years on the island of Ireland. RIP, Gay and Ian.
I worked in the department of agriculture in Northern Ireland for 2 years in 1997, Ian Paisley was always on the phone & got things sorted for his constituents, a v hard working man behind the scenes
Paisley's family lived next to my girlfriend whose mother a Catholic had a stroke And the council done nothing for her Paisley heard about it and stormed into the council office and raised a racket and within one week she was sorted out ,he was a great councilor and a Christian no matter his policiitics
He was known for fighting for the Catholics in his constituency, we were taught by a republican history teacher and he often commented on paisley and his treatment of Catholics in his constituency I was surprised. I respected that at least.
I'd a pal years ago who was one of his constituents, she's from a Catholic family, she said they used to go straight to him in his constituency office if they needed help with local issues, seems he was trustworthy in that context as a representative.
Gay will never b replaced ,, One of the best interviewers of all time , not just in Ireland but world wide , his technique & his ability to actually listen to the Answer to his question is rare . He always seemed to ask the question everyone wanted to hear the answer to , then he sat back & let them of .... absolutely brilliant...

I'm a southern Catholic myself but I have many relations in the North. Back when the horror of the Troubles were at their worst, many Catholic's who needed help with social problems actually went to Ian Paisley who always did his best for them. He was a firebrand preacher and a world class rabble-rouser but he was a towering figure in recent Irish history who had a huge influence in the events in Northern Ireland from the 1960's to the 1980's. Paisley was a big man with a big heart who was willing to help those he claimed to despise most of all: the dreaded Papists!

The only exceptions to this are obviously for commercial reasons and for a very small number of people who choose to ignore reality and the passage of 25 years during which the people of Ireland have become united in a way few ever thought possible. Many years ago, I, an Englishman with only a very distant drop of the blood of Erin in me, made the uncharacteristic decision to write a letter to him imploring him to take the power-sharing deal with Martin McGuinness, as I had, and still have, friends on both sides of the religious divide from Ireland, North and South. I longed for peace on that lovely island. To my surprise, he actually wrote a letter back! It was brief, but courteous - written by hand by a fountain pen - and he promised that he would consider the best way forward for all people involved. It is a treasured memory, and by that I don't mean the physical letter, but rather a demonstration of the ability of an individual to change themselves for the greater good. Gay Byrne was someone I always envied the Irish for - an almost mythical broadcaster - sheer class!
A true and resolute man... honest...forthright...and I miss his wisdom....I emailed his office for advice.....his wife phoned me at 7pm to talk to me.... the night of the election campaign ....I was upset and she said Ian would phone me when he returned from his campaigning....he phoned me at 1.30am....he was in his 70s...I will never forget this...RIP....anyone that ever met him saw him as he was and few disliked him

Don't have any problem with big Ian's religious views but he was responsible for a lot of the trouble in NI. I'll respect instead Terence O'Neill who tried to reconcile the people and who IP did so much to undermine.

Everyone who actually knew Paisley personally seem only to have good things to say about him. Apparently he served his constituents well regardless of their being catholic or protestant etc and was very a genial man one to one. I’m glad he and McGuinness and Adams forgave and bonded and worked together. Hopefully differences can be resolved again now. Politics and religion are great dividers but actually take these divisions away and people can get on. I heard Paisley and McGuinness had a good rapport.

Fascinating to listen to Paisley. He was a man of his times. An absolutist when it came to the Bible. His childhood did not seem like it was fun like many of our childhood’s. he spewed so much hatred. Yeah, you read stories where he was kind of the dichotomy of being human. Not really sure what to make of this interview. I feel for it empathy for the pain and not a very joyful energy coming from him. Who knows why people are the way they are He’s a literalist when it comes to the Bible yet he couldn’t hold us suspended believe for communion fascinating religion needs to be taken out of government separation of church and state. The tragedy of Paisley’s life is that, like countless men who lived at the forefront of history, he only came to see the necessity for peace and justice toward the closing of his life. Youth is all fire, old age is all regret. And that fire of his cost so many young men and women not just their freedom but their very lives. The tragedy is easy to define- that only in old age do we realise the utter stupidity of hatred and division. In the end, the war in Ireland quite simply wore everybody down to the bone; nobody could stick it any more. It’s absolutely true to say that not a single family in Northern Ireland has escaped the Troubles- my own included. Even all these years after my childhood in the 80s I’m still finding out more awful secrets in the family- stories of death, depression, suicide, armed conflict...things I was never told back then because adults tried to shield us from it all. Every family has had a member killed or imprisoned or beaten or otherwise brutalised. Every family knows someone permanently maimed or someone who took their own life because of a loss they could not endure. The simple static number of deaths does not tell the whole picture- the pain is far wider. But Paisley was not alone- not at all...there were countless hundreds of thousands of people just like him on both sides- all of them determined to “make the other side pay”. In that sense, the Troubles itself “grew up”; it got old and it even got sick of the old men pushing the violence. What a horrendous shame that the price we all paid was so vast before we ever even reached the stage of simply apologising to each other. But we got there in the end. The process of recovery continues, and an unspeakable number of people in Ireland still live with unimaginable sorrow. Let us only pray that they can leave the past behind them. If the immediate victims of the violence can do that, then there’s no excuse for the rest of us. God’s love for us ISN’T conditional- if we wish to be Godly then our love for our neighbours cannot be conditional either.
It cannot be disputed that in the Irish sea there is one large piece of rock which is ireland for everybody to live on and enjoy it never was there with barriers from the north of Ireland to the south of Ireland.. The large piece of rock known as ireland was never meant for England to come and still the north of that piece of Rock for themselves England should stop behaving like Barbarians in the world and give back what they stole over a hundred years ago... As a reformed evangelical christian in the US I have an enormous respect and appreciation for Rev. Paisley and his preaching. We have lost a great one. We'll see him again some day together with The Lord, and all those who trust in Christ ALONE and the price He paid for the forgiveness of our sin. Trust Him today and REPENT.
It was interesting what he said about his early, firebrand days: that if the protestant people of ulster didn't have a strong leader in those days, things could well have turned much worse than they did. If you look back in horror on what a strong leader did, imagine what a weak leader may have done.

If you ever needed proof of the damage that religious conviction does to society there you have it. Paisley was apparently a hard worker who stood up for constituents in both communities. I found it very soft. Byrne could have easily asked much more pertinent questions. Paisley is at least indirectly responsible for lots of violence, hatred and intolerance against the Catholic communities in the North of Ireland and even here in Scotland. He was certainly a big man in every sense of the word... His intentions I believe were always pure no matter what his politics..I'm from Dublin myself and always believed he incited tensions for his community and fear into the Catholic community up there but since the implementation of the peace process I believe we saw and experienced the real man of love and peace in Ireland 🇮🇪 God bless them both and their families ❤️❤️❤️
Met Big Ian twice. The warmth of his heart & the merriment of his soul blew me away. I saw Jesus in him.

Everyone who actually knew Paisley personally seem only to have good things to say about him. Apparently he served his constituents well regardless of their being catholic or protestant etc and was very a genial man one to one. I’m glad he and McGuinness and Adams forgave and bonded and worked together. Hopefully differences can be resolved again now. Politics and religion are great dividers but actually take these divisions away and people can get on. I heard Paisley and McGuinness had a good rapport.

Its quite hard even with his change at the end to look at this man with nothing but contempt. The hate and harm he caused is hard to get past.
I lived in Ravenhill rd for a while very close to Ian's flag church in early 90s. I dont know he is such a funny dude.

Fascinating to listen to Paisley. He was a man of his times. An absolutist when it came to the Bible. His childhood did not seem like it was fun like many of our childhood’s. he spewed so much hatred. Yeah, you read stories where he was kind of the dichotomy of being human.
Not really sure what to make of this interview. I feel for it empathy for the pain and not a very joyful energy coming from him.

The tragedy of Paisley’s life is that, like countless men who lived at the forefront of history, he only came to see the necessity for peace and justice toward the closing of his life. Youth is all fire, old age is all regret. And that fire of his cost so many young men and women not just their freedom but their very lives. The tragedy is easy to define- that only in old age do we realise the utter stupidity of hatred and division. In the end, the war in Ireland quite simply wore everybody down to the bone; nobody could stick it any more. It’s absolutely true to say that not a single family in Northern Ireland has escaped the Troubles- my own included. Even all these years after my childhood in the 80s I’m still finding out more awful secrets in the family- stories of death, depression, suicide, armed conflict...things I was never told back then because adults tried to shield us from it all. Every family has had a member killed or imprisoned or beaten or otherwise brutalised. Every family knows someone permanently maimed or someone who took their own life because of a loss they could not endure. The simple static number of deaths does not tell the whole picture- the pain is far wider. But Paisley was not alone- not at all...there were countless hundreds of thousands of people just like him on both sides- all of them determined to “make the other side pay”. In that sense, the Troubles itself “grew up”; it got old and it even got sick of the old men pushing the violence. What a horrendous shame that the price we all paid was so vast before we ever even reached the stage of simply apologising to each other. But we got there in the end. The process of recovery continues, and an unspeakable number of people in Ireland still live with unimaginable sorrow. Let us only pray that they can leave the past behind them. If the immediate victims of the violence can do that, then there’s no excuse for the rest of us. God’s love for us ISN’T conditional- if we wish to be Godly then our love for our neighbours cannot be conditional either.

It cannot be disputed that in the Irish sea there is one large piece of rock which is ireland for everybody to live on and enjoy it never was there with barriers from the north of Ireland to the south of Ireland.. The large piece of rock known as ireland was never meant for England to come and still the north of that piece of Rock for themselves England should stop behaving like Barbarians in the world and give back what they stole over a hundred years ago... All of the people in Ireland must come together in peace love and harmony... What ever your way of life what ever your beliefs are you must be free to explore the whole of your ireland.....
Why had Paisley such faith in God and preached so much evil in his life and misery to others done the right thing in later life though in having a friendship with in what he saw his enemies.

As a reformed evangelical christian in the US I have an enormous respect and appreciation for Rev. Paisley and his preaching. We have lost a great one. We'll see him again some day together with The Lord, and all those who trust in Christ ALONE and the price He paid for the forgiveness of our sin. Trust Him today and REPENT.

It was interesting what he said about his early, firebrand days: that if the protestant people of ulster didn't have a strong leader in those days, things could well have turned much worse than they did. If you look back in horror on what a strong leader did, imagine what a weak leader may have done.

At one time in my life, Dr. Paisley seemed like an Nazi, but today, I have much in common with him regarding religious orientation.
I remember him doing a speech in a church on netherfield Road liverpool in the 80s a great man a true gentleman
What a metamorphosis in character and strange that noone even thinks of him now. The title he was given was empty and rang in noones ears.

Will Paisley's Heaven have Catholic's ? Words do not describe what a divisive political leader he was. Any element of political progress in the North of Ireland, he opposed including the Good Friday Agreement of 1998.
@KnightOfTheKing I accept entirely that Jesus died for me as an act of pure and unadulterated love and I accept that I am sinner and will be judged accordingly. I also accept that Jesus gave us the gift of reconciliation, that I can confess my sins and seek forgiveness. I accept that by the 'Grace of God there go I'.................The point that I was was making about Paisley was his inability to reconcile himself publicly to Catholic's in Northern Ireland and to oppose any form of reconciliation......I grew up in Southern Ireland in the 1970's and 1980's and all you would hear is Paisley speeches was hate for his fellow countrymen and opposition to any political settlements........It would have been better for all if he was a character for reconciliation rather than division...

If you ever needed proof of the damage that religious conviction does to society there you have it. Paisley was apparently a hard worker who stood up for constituents in both communities. An otherwise good man who was tainted by his religious beliefs. Yet he felt that he had 'God on his side' and it was his duty to defend protestantism and some book written by peasants in the desert a few thousand years ago...

I found it very soft. Byrne could have easily asked much more pertinent questions. Paisley is at least indirectly responsible for lots of violence, hatred and intolerance against the Catholic communities in the North of Ireland and even here in Scotland.
Many of the bigots at my school worshiped this man... he seemed to vindicate their furious hatred of all things green.
