  • Join me on a visit to the Spencer Opal Mines Mini-Mine self-collecting area in Spencer, Idaho. For $75 you can fill a 2.5 gallon bucket with whatever you find in their pile-o-rocks. Thank you to Erin for the intro on how to look for opal, and to Leo for the interview!

Great video. And if anything you’ve got a pretty decent haul of practice pieces. I’ve been really considering getting into some lapidary work and have been researching equipment and tooling, and buying some rough to work with.
It seems to me in the USA, while there is opal to be had, one would have to be very lucky to find some real gem quality Opal, while other parts of the world has really Gemmy Opal in abundance. But even so, I’d absolutely love to have some American Opal with some fire or play of color one could brag up so to speak.
Good luck in your adventures !

    Interesting interviews.
I have not heard of zeolites coming from the Spencer mine, I will have to dig into that subject some.
Spencer Opal seems like the type of place a person should go to twice, like the first time collecting it is a learning experience and the second visit you really have an eye for it.

Yes I think I'd do much better the second go-round.
Leo mentioned zeolites when someone found a dark red piece. I didn't find anything quite as dark as theirs, but I'll try and take macro photos of mine.

How much fun was that? Both interviews were super interesting and the opal you brought back was awesome. Thanks Patrick!

We pass through there every time on our way out to our gold dredging claims in SW Idaho, thinking about stopping on the way home if we can't find any on our claims. Mostly just agates, Chalcedony, and some some decent sized jasper chunks but I've watched outback opal hunters for years and always wanted to find color. About to head out in a couple weeks and this time I've got rock splitting equipment and might try breaking some of the rhyolite that makes up our canyon in crevices and see if anything is in there, or possibly just washes down the creek. Found one for sure piece of red/yellow fire opal, but I don't even remember where I found it... Glad to get to see what's there before going, that's better color bars than I expected! In other peoples videos the cameras weren't good enough to pick up any color ever.

It really is frustrating trying to film opal with a cell phone. It never looks as good as in person. Good luck on your claim!

I've heard from a couple of people that buying rough online from Spencer Opal went well. Hope you get some cracking good gems!

We just found out that you sold the Opa; Mine to a Company in Canada. Congratulations. So there probably be no more public mining..
