  • I do love some easy roadside rockhounding, and it doesn't get much easier than this!
    These UV lights I have really are opening up a whole new world of collecting to me, this is a neat location, but it's unlikely that I would be returning to this location if I didn't have the midwave light to see how colorful this material is.
    The midwave 310nm UV light shown here is from Stimac Engineering - www.perkyboxes.com

    Jared, I laughed so hard at the look Sarah gave you when you said the bird was the word. My wife and I have been married 32 years and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten that same look from my wife. It’s as if they are saying I can’t believe I married such an idiot, but would love. I enjoyed the video as I do all of them.

    Wow? I would go nuts at night up there with a uv light! Thats an awesome road cut and thats a nice sized vein of calcite! It literally is like a little calcite waterfall! And all those crystals just laying on the ground, everywhere! I like calcite because, much like quartz, it takes on so many different looks, but its all calcite! And under uv, calcite really glows! So pretty with all the different colors! That was an awesome spot! Thank you and Sara for this great video! ❤

    Hmmm... I think the universe is saying, Hey Dustin CALCITE! This reminds me I need to check out what I found last week with the UV light. I got a tip from an extremely reliable source yesterday on red dogtooth calcite crystals! It's a road cut location. I'm kind of on the fence if I want to video it. It's exciting but I can't really share the exact location because if I did I'm sure it wouldn't be there long. Anyway... 1000% recommend the St. Genevieve natural history museum. I got kind of a spur of the moment tour yesterday from the museum director and see things that weren't on display. I actually got to pet a dinosaur yesterday! I'm not even kidding! We got to hold a specimen of fossil dinosaur SKIN! Ok done bragging lol. Hope you and the family are well Jared.

    When I was a kid, the local museum had a booth specifically for fluorescent minerals. You would step in, close the curtains, and a uv light would illuminate the display cabinet.
    Do you have, or are you planning to make a UV display for your collection?

  • @denniswood5946

    Really interesting. I am wondering if that calcite would display what is known as thermoluminessence. This is a material's property of emitting light when heated. For some crystals this occurs at high temperatures, say 400c.
    I have heard that some calcite from near mexico has this property due to manganese impurities, but luminesses in visible light at room temp. To see it, you chill the crystal well below the threshold temp and then radiate with high energy x-rays or electron beam to charge it up. Aftward, it will begin to glow as it warms up. I would love to try it on the calcite from that road cut. May have to swing by it sometime.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  Před 4 měsíci

      I would love to see that happen but I don't think I know anyone that can heat things like that.

    • @denniswood5946
      @denniswood5946 Před 4 měsíci

      Any medical physicist can do it with a medical linac. I don't know how long an exposure it would require... but I have used ours for doing some artwork that took about 30 minutes of electron beam. That should be more than enough.
