      Hey hey Viacheslav!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      It took me awhile to debate which I wanted, the focus breathing of the 50-100 is what sort of killed me as I didn't want to deal with that too much even though I usually don't get bothered by it, but it was a bit much. This 50-150 really sings with the 18-35 when you add a speed booster to it. It fulfilled the missing focal length between 35-50mm and drops the aputure down to f2.0 which is much closer to the F1.8 of the 18-35 (no booster). These two lenses in that specific combination is my MFT narrative filmmaker kit of choice.

    And another important thing about the Stabilization is how it looks in motion? For steady shots it might be ok. But mostly, it suffers from stuttering and similar issues during the camera panning.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      The OS in this lens does a great job with how it handles movement while staying still or panning and tilting slowly or quickly! I didn't really see any stuttering issues or even hear optical element knocking around when I whip panned.

    He's absolutely right. I've been using it's earlier cousin (Sigma 50-150 APO DC HSM, Nik mount) for years alongside the Sig 18-35... first with my AF100 and GH4, now with my Sony FS5. It has no lack of sharpness, and that version is actually about the same size as the 18-35. Boosted, that effective ~35-105/2 range is a perfect pairing.
    Here's the crazy part... I still use it with a Speedbooster (MetaBones) on my FS5 in certain situations. It absolutely vignettes, BUT, the effect is slight and feathered vs. a hard vignette. For something like a closeup or interview, it's an effect I'd probably add back in post anyway.
    Now, I've also tried it on a Nikon D850 forced into FX mode. With that sensor pairing, the vignette is hard and unusable... so depending on your camera, YMMV.

      This lens is definitely a golden gem that I think got forgotten somehow, I only wished that its little brother, Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, had a similar long focus throw. That was one of the first lenses I paired to my GH4 and while it produced amazing images with the speedbooster, the focus throw was about 30 degrees and extremely hard to follow a subject :( But its ok because we got the Sigma 18-35 instead!

    I bought one for my canon R7 in the second-hand market.
    After my testing, the sharpness of this lens far exceeds that of the Shima 50-100 f1.8 art, especially in the corners. The OS is perfectly compatible with the R7, and the autofocus is fast and perfect。

      That is amazing! So glad you were able to find this lens, they are quite sparse these days. Very interesting to hear that it performs a bit better than the 50-100. I love this lens, unfortunately haven't gotten a chance to use it much since switching to full frame.

      this lense is thrid generation of 50-150mm f2.8 that manufactured from 2011 to 2014 (discontinued),the second generation that without OS was produced in 2008.i have both them.
      Interestingly, the second generation lens is also sharper than the 50-100art, especially in the corners,and the R7 body OS can also work perfectly.
      But there is a problem with the second-generation's autofocus work.
      In photo mode, its focus is behind the focus point when you zoom in to view the image, and it can't be corrected by camera body AF fine-tuning or repair.(I have also tested it on 90d and 5d4)
      There are also similar issues in video mode.
      glad its manual focusing can work normally and get sharp images.
      I found three methods to focus correctly
      1.use MF
      2.first use AF mode (one shot),half press the shutter,then MF it until clear
      3.Using Focus Surround Mode,you will get amazing image
      In addition, in video mode, when the aperture between 50mm to 70mm is below F4 and the aperture between 70mm to150mm is below F5.6, its autofocus can actually work normally! It looks like a usable lens that 50-150mm f4-5.6@@TLDR_filmmaker

    I bought this lens in early 2017 which is almost exactly 5 years ago and this is STILL my ABSOLUTE favorite lens that I own. The image is pin sharp and the F stop makes me able to shoot in low lights while with longerr focal length. For a stage photographer, this is a GREAT lens. The extra 50mm focal length reach is absolutely necessary for stage photographer while F stops might not matter that much. Yes, there are often low light performances but I think zooming is more important since stage lights helps a lot.
    Fortunately, I could get a new one since in 2017 it has already been discontinued. I was looking for it all around the web and this one I think is the last new one available in my country lol. The fact that it was never a popular lens for photographer while it is the APS-C equivalent for 70-200 with great IQ is a wonder. But if you want to get it, I assure you that this is a good purchase.

For cinematographers, these two lenses for S35 is probably the best out there from the sharp image, great focus gear, and the barrel does not extend, simply amazing! It looks like the OS version is now very very rare, I don't see any available in my country either. I definitely won't be selling mine, this lens can work with me for many years.

    I can't speak to the original 50-150 (mk1 version) but I have to say after recently purchasing a used 50-150 mk2 non-OS (and having owned the OS version a few years ago) that the mk2 of this lens definitely should be worth any videographers consideration if you can find a good used copy. Literally about half the weight of the OS version, near beer can size and it still delivers a sharp image (not that I'm particularly interested in absolute tack-sharpness for video anyway).
    It does suffer from a bit more focus breathing than the OS version though judging from he examples in this video, but overall I'd say the mk2 is a perfect companion to the 18-35 1.8 if you're looking for a similar size and weight across both lenses and don't see the lack of OS as a dealbreaker :)

    GREAT !
    i have 18-35 and this lens for my m43 system.Crop sensor lens is the best for m43,m43 lens is ok but when you have both crop sensor(canon)and m43 setup,the crop sensor lens can give you extra zoom range and much more cheaper than the same on m43.Giving example of this lens comparing with Olympus 40-150.Although 40-150 is smaller and 40-150 to be 80-300, while the 50-150 would go to 100-300 and having image stablizion weight 400g more and much more cheaper even on second hand.Because i don't have 40-150 so i can't compare the quality these two lenes but 50-150 is quite good compare to my other m43 lens at least at 2.8 aperture i can fully open and no problem at all!
    And at first i am considering do i need to get 50-100/1.8 or this lens.For extra 50mm(100mm) is more important than 1 stop of extra light because this lens has image stablizion .For the creamy bokeh,i can zoom all the way into 150mm/2.8 compare to 100/1.8.While the image quality i think it is likely the 50-100/1.8 is going to win but it is not much by surfing on dxo website.

      Totally agree, I think when it comes to the world of videography, having the sharpest craziest lens isn't as important since we're almost moving. I have owned this lens since new and it is the sharpest lens in my bag period. I wish they had a 17-50 to match it's sharpness. Yea they have a 17-50 2.8 but it's not as sharp as the Canon 17-55 2.8.
    My only issue over the years was the OS system goes bad after time. Since 2014 I had it at Sigma to replace the OS twice and it is at Sigma as we speak to change it yet again. I was thinking seriously about getting the 50-100 or a 70-200 to replace it but the amount of work I use it for (weddings and portraits) makes it hard to let go. Hey! Thanks for engaging. I haven't done enough film work to warrant my thoughts to this question. But coming from a photography stand point and since I have experience with the 18-35 and this one as well, they both have impressive resolving capabilities and while I only do real world studies, keeping that in mind, both lenses are incredibly sharp for my humble needs. From a filling background but it always helps to have a decent focus ring grip and focus throw which I feel the 18-35 does better owing to the Art series features. But going by what's said in this video, the 50-150 is great too. Hope I could help in some way.

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 5 lety +2

      Hey hey again Nate!
      The sharpness is quite good from what I can tell and I'd say is comparable between the two lens generations. However I may be at a disadvantage in terms of doing a full optics comparison as I only have my GH5 to go off of (non-boosted) instead of C100 or C200 that you have to film with.
      But all in all I think this lens, given its added 50mm reach, onboard OIS that works really really well, puts it ahead of the Sigma 50-100 in terms of deployability for me.

    I bought this lens over a year ago (and this video helped with that decision). I have used the 50-100 1.8 previously and like you mentioned in the video it the focus breathing was way to heavy, plus I use a shoulder rig and having stabilisation is pretty necessary for telephoto lenses. So I was super excited to be able to pick up one of these lenses in EF mount for my Blackmagic Pocket 6K. But long story short a couple of weeks ago this lens was misplaced and was left outside in some long grass for 2 weeks. When I collected it there was no sign of it ever being out in the weather. I apprehensively put it on my camera and straight away the iris clicked into the right f-stop and the image stabilisation worked! I couldn't believe it! Very lucky! And a testament to just how well constructed this lens is. Just to be sure I'm going to take it in for a professional check up/service.

    Awesome idea! Really like your way of giving fast and valuable content! I'm considering this lens for my new XH-1. I couldn't be more happy with my Sigma 18-35 and the fringer Pro adapter. Maybe the Sigma 50-150 would be the perfect addition! I was wondering: Is this lens really parfocal? I've read it somewhere.

      I definitely feel the 50-150 is a great companion to the Sigma 18-35, especially if you have an electronic adapter but don't have a camera with IBIS, that this lens does have OIS in it.
      I just gave it a test with a non-boosted adapter to mimic your XH-1, unfortunately its not parfocal on my setup, its slightly off from focus when I zoom to and from the extremes. However this could potentially be the problem of the cheap non boosted adapter in which the flange distance is ever so slightly off that it could hinder the parfocal ability.
      I know with my Sigma 18-35 when I had a boosted adapter, I adjusted the booster optics and it made my Sigma nearly parfocal, not perfect, but pretty darn close. Unfortunately this wont be possible with your XH-1 because the sensor size is already the same for these Sigma lenses.
      Hope the helps! Thanks again for stopping by and hope to see you in the next one!

    Speaking of sigmas, I am having a HOOT with their monster 50-500 (OS, HSM) that I use speedboosted on my cameras. It's actually super usable speedboosted for s35 (feels like 35mm) or natively on full frame. Surprisingly like your 50-150 it has zero breathing. It's wild I don't know how they do that. I also have the 18-35 and 50-100 as tempting as the 50-150 is I'll keep the 50-100 for consistancy as it's always paired with the 18-35. 50-150 non-speedboosted for me is not as usable as the 50-500 speedboosted which "feels like" a 35-350mm which is usable as a semi wide like a Canon 30-300.

      So glad this video was helpful! I don't think its a big deal either between 1.8 and 2.8 at the telephoto length especially if you put a speed booster on it for M43 sensors. I no longer use a booster on my sigma 18-35 and only boost the 50-150. This essentially gives me two lenses that go from a 18-105mm with the only difference being f1.8 and f2.0. Its perfect for M43 shooters!

Im trying to find a video that compares 150mm with 200mm (how much zoom diffrence). Sigma 50-100 can be also a 100-200 with no speedbooster ;) Nice Video :)

      I agree, would have been awesome to see some of these legacy lenses continue their life with the new mirrorless mounts that works for Sony E and even MFT. As much as I love that there are adapters that allows these other format lenses to work, there something to be said for native mounts!
      But...not sure if you're a MFT shooter, but with Panasonic teaming up with Sigma for their new "S" series full frame line, I'm interested to see what Sigma brings to the table or if they are just simply creating L-mount versions of their current FF line of lenses.

      While I don't have direct experience with the 2nd version of this lens + viltrox on the GH5. The IBIS and aperture will most likely all be fine due to Sigma having always done well with its electronic protocols while Tamron have had weird communication through adapters with their older lenses (newer Tamron EF lenses don't seem to have the problem). So I wouldn't be worried based on Sigma's track record with their older lenses and electronic adapters.
      However if AF for photos is your main needs, then each lens will vary in terms of AF performance. Native lenses would definitely be the best way to go.

      The reason this lens won't work on a Full Frame Camera is because it was originally made for a sensor size that is smaller than a full frame sensor. If you are talking the official Sigma MC-11 adapter, I would double check to see if someone has use this lens with it. The reason I say this is because that adapter is mainly for the newer generation of Sigma Art lenses and it could have some trouble with its older generation lenses (weird I know). If this is the case you may want to go with some other 3rd party adapters where they have some basic profiles that will at least handle the lenses aperture adjustments and transferring focal length data to the a6500 for IBIS purposes.

      I just have a couple questions, are you looking to use this for video or more for photography? Also I am on the GH5 micro43 system, will you be using it on a native APS-C camera body or something smaller with an adapter like I am?
      Because I do mainly with videos, the optical quality is not the thing I look for because all my pictures are moving constantly, so sharpness is not a big deal for me. This lens is sharp and matches up with my Sigma 18-35 quite well. I've used it on a feature film shoot, but I don't have access to the footage yet until the movie is released later next year.
      If you're using it for photography, there are a couple videos of the non-OS version that you can check out. From what I can remember people enjoyed using it for photography and this version of the lens only gets better from the original non-OS versions.
      Hope this helps!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +3

      Hey Jeremy!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      I think it depends on what factors you're considering the 2.8 aperture for,
      1) If we're talking about overall light gathering of the lens, then yes its definitely not a great as a 1.8 aperture. However I've learned that even though lenses can get down to insanely wide apertures to concentrate as much light to the sensor as possible, it's a pain to film with such a shallow depth of field and you sort of loose composition when the entire subject is not in focus but only a part of the subject.
      2) For narrative filmmaking I have a slight luxury of having time to light a scene so that I can comfortably shoot at f2.8 or higher depending on my depth of field needs. For a documentary filmmaker this could potentially be a problem, however this problem has been lessened with cameras like GH5s and A7s series.
      I think with the rise of DSLR cameras for filmmaking, some filmmakers are mistaking what the aperture is really for and instinctively think F2.8 - 5.6 are undesirable lenses. If shallower depth of field is what you're going for in your shot, then 2.8 could be a limitation depending on what focal length you are using. If uncontrolled low light is what you mainly film in, then the aperture should not be the adjustment you're looking for rather you should invest in a camera that lives in higher Native ISO's. A well selected camera body in these situations are worth more than a lens thats able to get down to f1.4. Having both would be the ideal setup, but if I had to go with one or the other I would selected a Low Light Camera body.
      Somewhere along the line I believe filmmakers mistakenly started gauging their exposure through the use of aperture adjustments instead of using lights or using a low light camera that is able to operate cleanly at higher ISO's. When you look at larger budget films they are usually filming at f5.6 and only reserve 2.8 and below for special shots, but definitely not the entire film.
      I hope this helps clarify a little bit where I come from in terms of my opinions on this lens and the lenses I select to use in general. Thanks again for stopping by! Check back every Wednesday for something new! What kind of films do you enjoy filming?

      Hey tns incp!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      Unfortunately I deal more with videography with the lenses I choose to use so I may not be a good eye for what someone needs for photography. The question I get asked a lot is, "is the lens sharp?" for a filmmaker, yes they are sharp for the resolutions we work in, but to a photographer it may be hideous because they need to print their work. Sigma does make a 70-200 f2.8 but it's a previous generation design, not sure if they will be updating it to their new ART series design. I've heard some good things from the newer Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2.
      But alas, I don't think I can give much of a recommendation on which one to go with as I don't have those lenses, and also because I use these lenses manually and don't have native camera bodies to test how fast their Auto Focus really is. Sorry I can't be of more help :(

    Lately I have watched several TLDR Filmaker videos, and Im impressed how I can find answer to almost all of my answer. For my Fuji X-T3 first I used my old Sigma HSM 17-50mm lens, but I really hated it, it had some focusing issues, with front focus, It was really hard to properly set the focus, so I sold it, and for some extra money I bought, the legendary Sigma ART 18-35. One of my favorit lens ever since, it solved all of my issues. But obviously I wish to have a telephoto lens, and I was about to save some money for the ART 50-100 1.8, but I found its price even on the used market a bit too much.
    But are you telling me, that this 50-150mm lens is almost as good in sharpness, and even have better focus breathing? For its cost its almost unbelivable. Im a bit sad, that there too few test video about this lens, however Ive found a Sony A6300 test video with this lens, and it was actually really convincing too. I've never used Nikon cameras so I'm not as familiar with their own Nikon to Nikon adaptors. As long as the adaptor transfers electronic data like aperture, then it should be able to do single focus for photography (results may vary). If you are wanting video continuous AF, that I cannot say as this uses an older type of focusing motor. The adaptor will need to take this into account when trying to keep focus working during video work. Hope this helps!

      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      I would highly suggest you check out one of my lens buying videos here: czcams.com/video/XzHW45n_XqI/video.html
      I unfortunately cannot give you an honest answer to which lens is best for you because I do not have the same creative eye as you. This video breaks down lenses to its basic attributes on what they do and what I look for to determine my lens purchases.
      Long story short, lenses wont inherently make your video or film good, there are other skills involved. Someone with a $50 lens is more than capable to make a better movie than someone who spent $2000. I trained on a very affordable lens before I eventually got enough experience to justify a more expensive lens.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by, check back every Wednesday for something new!

      For me, I'm primarily a "narrative filmmaker" working on "independent movies" (action movies) which means I do not require certain focal lengths compared to a wedding videographer or documentary filmmaker. Because of this, the Sigma 18-35 with a Viltrox EF-M2 and Viltrox EF-M1 adapter on my GH5 is the most useful lens for "me."
      Again this is "my" experience with "my" needs as a filmmaker, "my" situation may not be the best advice for someone that does not film what I film. I'm not sure if you're just beginning filmmaking or just wondering if the lens is a good upgrade, but if you're a beginning I would still highly suggest you check out the video I made above.
      Hope this helps!

      TLDR Filmmaker I’ve planned to film mostly cars etc for a vlog with a friend (b-roll), and other cinematic stuff, not sure when the 300mm will be used though, guess it has its place.. more often will the sigma 18-35, 50-150 & “Leica” 12-60 f/2.8-4 be used!
      Is there any chance that you tested out the 300mm f/2.8?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Cool! I think in terms of cars and vlogs, the Leica 12-60 would be more than sufficient with its focal range and fast AF performance with the GH5. Though if you find yourselves doing car shows that are in darker settings so people can show off their light kits on their cars, then you'll probably want to have the Sigma 18-35 with thee Viltrox.
      Id say for now, see which type of video work you'll be doing the most, if cinematic works are not as frequent, I would hold off on the 50-150 and 300mm for now. Those lenses don't start to shine until you have ample distance between you and the subject.
      I have not had a chance to test out the 300mm, I hope as my channel grows I'll be able to work with either BHphoto or maybe a camera/lens rental house to provide more videos for anyone wishing to know more.
      Fun fact, I found an unbranded Japanese 500mm f5.6 lens at a flea market two years ago, the lens is quite cool! I'll need to dig that lens back out and see what I can do with it, I only shot some initial tests back then just to see what the optics looked like.

      Most definitely those lenses will come in handy for drifting! Here I thought it was just car show stuff, I was wrong.
      I'll definitely get to that 500mm for everyone.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey hey Yannick!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      This lens is definitely the counter part to my Sigma 18-35 with a twist. I made a video about how I am leaving the whole speedbooster idea off of my Sigma 18-35mm because I simply don't need the wider end and the extra light does not affect my work as I get to light my scenes. So the booster is actually sitting on my Sigma 50-150. The reason I do it this way now is because it more or less bridges the missing gap between 35-50mm. Without the booster on my 18-35, it behaves like a 36-70mm. With the booster on the 50-150, it behaves like a 70-213mm. Then you take in the light gather equation of the two. the 18-35 is still technically at 1.8 and gathering that kind of light, while the 50-150 is now boosted to f2.0 (more or less) which closes the light transmission gap between the two lenses as well. Its not perfect, but its close enough to get these lenses to blend from one to the other.
      Of course if I need wider, I'll just slap the booster over to the 18-35 for that shot, no big deal.
      Lastly as this video shows, the 50-150 does not suffer the focus breathing problems of the 50-100. That may or may not both some people. But that is a plus for me. I also get the extra 50mm reach. I have OIS which will be handy for your BMPCC4k. So in my eyes, I actually prefer this lens to pair with my 18-35mm. They may be different generations of lens coating, but they are still similar enough and sharp.
      Hope this makes sense and helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

      TLDR Filmmaker thanks so much for taking the time to give such detailed feedback man! I’ve been thinking for so long on what is the right Telezoom lens to the 1835. I’m suprised you mostly shoot at 36mm and upwards. Maybe I should considerate that too, as I use the 1835 mostly at 35mm with a speedbooster, as I prefer the look. I never shoot lower than 1.8 anyway. I think I’ll try to get my hands on the 50-150 then. Only found one used, but for a price of 525€ which seems like a good deal. Stay safe and healthy, too!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 4 lety +1

      You're most welcome! Yea a lot of people don't understand why I consider 36mm good enough for my wides. Mainly because I'm a narrative filmmaker and a 24mm look is really only good for an establishing shot, not good for medium shots of actors. The difference of a 24mm to a 36mm FOV is maybe moving the camera 2ft back, I usually have space so thats not a problem to reframe, and it gives me more background compression to work with. Since you go to the 35mm end with a booster, that means you're feeling best at about a 50mm look (full frame terms) so if you decide to forgot and get a non-booster for the 18-35mm, you'll want to be around use 25mm (approx) to get the same look. Heres the kicker, because you don't use f1.8 all that often, this may be an advantage to you because when you go to 25mm to compose the shot, your depth of field technically gets a little deeper. So if you did shoot that 25mm @ f1.8, you'll technically have the DOF of f2.5 or so, while still gathering the same amount of light as f1.8. (aka, you don't need as much light to obtain the same type of shot as you did before with a booster shot at F2.8 or something).
      It's really weird how all this works out, but thats the magic of all this crop factor business while using faster lenses without a booster. Hope it kinda makes sense, feel free to experiment how to use the 18-35 with and without the booster! Hopefully you can find a 50-150mm OS version soon, until then keep creating!

      Hey hey Ru Lash!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      Yes, this lens does work with the Viltrox Adapter in terms of AF for stills. There are some times where it misses focus the first time (depending on your AF Area settings) but usually will catch it on the second try.
      That being said I wouldn't count on it for fast moving subjects, works nicely for stationary subjects.
      If you do the occasionally video then the AF won't work that well as the lenses focusing system was not built for it as well as GH focus system doesn't track well enough.

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey hey Dimitri!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      A booster takes your lens image circle and focuses it to a smaller point, this only works for Full Frame or APS-C lenses that are going to a smaller sensor size. You can take a MFT lens and booster it down, its physically impossible due to the mount design. Canon EF is the most popular lens to be boosted to other sensor formats. The benifits of a booster is that your lens will actually become brighter at each F-stop, and you will regain the wider FOV when using a APS-C or MFT sensor. This is just a crash course description, hope it makes sense!

      This is an APSC lens because the crop circle can only cover a APS-C sensor. However because it is not a canon brand lens, it is using a Full Frame EF mount. Meaning it can be used on a Full Frame camera (if it has a sensor crop mode) or APS-C sensor cameras that have either a EF or EF-S mount. Hope this makes sense and helps!

      I'm not sure how well these lenses would pair to a Nikon body via an electronic adaptor. At minimum you should be able to control the Aperture of the lens, but Auto-Focus in photo or video modes might be hit or miss. You may want to look into the Nikon F mount of this lens as it was built in that era. Those lenses with a F to Z mount adapter may yield better results.

      Unfortunately I probably won't be getting/reviewing the Tamron 35-150 because of the variable aperture, generally I'd like to have lenses that stay constant. Another reason is that Tamrons, when I use an adapter into my GH5, have traditionally not worked well. When I used to own a metabones, Tamron lens chips would burn out, I lost two lenses because of it. So ever since I've stayed away from Tamron as I'm not sure why their internal chips are different versus Sigma and Canon that have had no problems communicating through an adapter. Its a shame as I do love Tamron lenses :(

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey volverdesign!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking some questions!
      - No, a Sigma SA mount will not work with the Viltrox EF-M2, you will need a EF mount lens for that adapter
      - This lens was made in multiple mounts, I personally always suggest people to purchase EF mount lenses because when it come to development of adapters, EF mount is always the first one to come out and have the most support. Do not purchase a Nikon len and then adapt it to EF mount because you will not be able to talk to the Nikon lens electronically. Fully functioning Nikon adapters are really not present in the market.
      - Yup, the conversion is the same as the 18-35 ART, both of these lenses were made for cropped APS-C sensor cameras

      The Stabilization does work with the Viltrox or Commlite adapter, you need to make sure you have the OIS turned on before powering on the camera. While the IBIS does work alongside the OIS it will not work in the way of IBIS 2 where they work in conjunction so you may get some weird movements from the IBIS. I would suggest just using the IBIS only as it does a great job on its own with this lens.

      I did not specifically use this lens for that shot, that shot was done with a vintage Zuiko Olympus OM 70-150mm f/4 with a passive cheap speedbooster zoomed to 150mm.
      You are correct, I was playing around with lens compression by using a longer focal length while framing my subject as if it was a medium wide shot to achieve the look of that building being much closer and larger than the wider shorter focal length shots.
      I will eventually do a video series of how I compose shots and determine what focal lengths to use. But I do briefly talk about lens compression and what it looks like from many different focal lengths in my video here: czcams.com/video/XzHW45n_XqI/video.html

      I'm not too sure how well this lens will CAF on a Fuji system, I have not gotten a chance to use a Fuji camera yet. This being an older generation Sigma lens, I'd assume you'd be able to just change aperture and it may possibly relay focal length information for IBIS. But as far as CAF performance, I generally would advice to get native lenses if CAF is the top priority.

    Is there any way to adapt this lens to a Panasonic S-Series L-Mount? I know it would show heavy vignetting depending on the focal length, it being an APS-C lens on a full frame body, but I wonder if an adapter, possibly a speedbooster could somehow lessen that issue.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hey hey Starman!
      There are adaptors out there like Sigmas MC21. It'll give you control of Aperture and basic AF functions for photography. Video AF I am not for certain. You also have third party lens adaptors, Viltrox maybe, that will get you the aperture control but AF for video probably won't work well. AF for photography may be spotty compared to Sigmas Official adapter.
      No a speedbooster will not help, it will make the vignetting even worse. Speedboosters shrink the image circle instead of expanding it.

      I do have some plans to do a review on the new GH5 firmware that was released today, but I won't be getting to it until after June 10th. I am on the final home stretch of the feature film I am D.O.P'ing for and want to make sure I keep the firmware of my camera consistent all the way through. Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      Unfortunately I only work in the field of videography and not so much photography so sharpness is a bit subjective to me because I work in the confines of 1080 to UHD 4k resolution, and in most cases they are viewed on a Smartphone or Tablet so sharpness really becomes less of worry for me.
      The are a couple people on youtube that you can check out to see if they have a review on those lenses as they usually dive into sharpness tests etc.
      - Christopher Frost Photography
      - Tony and Chelsea Northrop
      - Fro Knows Photos (aka Jared Polin)
      I know Christopher Frost has looked at the 50-100 as well as Tony and Chelsea Northrop. Jarid Polin has looked at one of the version of 50-150 but I'm not sure if he look at my version with the OS. I'm going to assume Christopher Frost has looked at the Canon 55-250 because that gentleman has touched just about every modern lens I can think of.
      There are also some online resources that you can check, I think its called DXOmark. They usually have a library of tests done to lenses and camera bodies I think.

      Hahaha yup a real human reply! I try my best to answer all comments, even on old videos, when I have the time to do so. Theres probably going to be a day where I can't keep up.
      I personally have since moved onto Sony cameras with their E-mount design and lens options. One of the main reasons I left was because Panasonic wasn't giving me what I needed and I was done with adaptors for electronic lenses. So far I have not regretted my move and it's beginning to make more sense as the Canon EF mount seems to be legacy now and no one is developing for it. It does make me sad as now you're forced into one camp or another when it comes to lens options.
      For me it may hurt if Panasonic ever finally gets their act together with their AF, because that was the only thing I wish I could have with their cameras, and if it rivals Sonys I may switch back over time. For now the Sony lens lineup and feature set works well for my current needs.

    Hi, I'm hoping you can help me with something since you are the only person I can find with this same setup. I have the Viltrox M1 and M2 on a GH4. I just received a used 50-150mm from KEH. The lens looks great, but there is a slight clunking noise when the lens is shifted back and forth. I heard this is normal when the lens is powered off, but it continues when the camera is powered on, resulting in an image shift as it clunks. Do you have the same clunking noise (off or on)? Is it possible the Viltrox isn't engaging the OS power, or do you think this is just a faulty lens? Thanks!

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 5 lety

      Greetings Tev!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question.
      I have two copies of this lens and both of them do not clunk when the lens is off or on. One quirk that I found to engage the OIS for lenses attached to the Viltrox was that you needed to have the switch already set to "ON" before you turned on the camera. If you had the lens "OFF" and then tried to engage the "ON" it would not work. Not sure if this is fixed with newer firmware from Viltrox as I have not updated mine since everything works fine right now, "don't fix what's not broken"
      Otherwise the clunking seems odd... I know the older Canon 24-105 f/4 clunked around, but my copies of the Sigma does not. My guess is its possibly a faulty lens, but if you have not updated the Viltrox Firmware and turned the OIS "ON" first before powering up the camera, I would try that first and see if that fixes anything.
      Hope this helps! Definitely check back and let the community know of your findings!

      Thank you so much for the reply. I suspected as much. Since I only had a few days left to return to KEH, I processed the return just in case. Luckily, I found one for sale on Craigslist the same day. It was nice having played with the KEH lens because I knew what to look for. I tried the Craigslist one on my same set-up and definitely no clunking, on or off. So, yes, it seems the lens was broken. Great video BTW. This video was a major reason I decided to try and find this lens in the first place. I really didn't care for the focus breathing I saw in videos of the newer 50-100mm, plus it's longer, has optical stabilization, and the F2.8 seems like it will be plenty - the DOF can be made quite shallow and the focal reducer knocks it down to F2.0 for extra light.

If not, make sure you don't have the OS on the lens turned on, as I've noticed that contributes to the vignetting. Hey hey Framer of worlds!

      This lens is a little tricky because its focus ring is a bit on the thin side in general. I personally don't have a lens gear on it however if you have a caliper to measure the diameter of the lens, there are companies on amazon that have full 360 focus gear rings for various lens diameters that you'd have to just fit the lens through. geni.us/i6s8 (affiliate link, Amazon)
      I purchased one for my Olympus 12-40. All my other lenses with larger focus barrels I use this: geni.us/5Yvg (Affiliate link, Amazon). I think they have thinner ones, you just have to make sure its long enough for the diameter. I LOVE these, they don't just out of the lens as much, super solid, and have held up for years. These are more preferable for these larger lenses. If you have a small vintage lens you'll want the ones that jut out further like the one I have on my Oly 12-40 lens. Hope this helps!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Hey Ryan!
      I would honestly say that theres no major differences at the end of the day. In my first narrative film, that samples were shown in this review video, I had my camera ops deploy a Rokinon Prime, Sigma, Panasonic 12-35 on gimbal, and a vintage Olympus 70-200mm zoom, just to get all those shots you saw.
      While optical performance is definitely a concern and we'd like to make sure our images turn out sharp no matter what f/stop we're at. Generally speaking modern lenses are all acceptably sharp wide open, and we may actually find ourself closing down the lens to get the right depth of field for the shot or lighting conditions. We closed down the old vintage 70-200 and it sharpened up nicely for the specific shots I needed.
      TLDR: They are about the same, the difference would come in terms of contrast, color reproduction, subtle optical distortions, and flare characteristics. All of which our audience members don't wonder about and would never notice even if we told them to look for it.
      Hope this helps! Are you asking in terms of you're about to invest into your first set of lens/lenses beyond the kit lens? If so, definitely ask me any questions you'd like answer in my series of lens videos that are coming!

      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Gotcha! Hmm... if the 18-35mm is on a speedbooster there would only be about a 4mm focal difference between the Rokinon 12mm and the Sigma 18-35, both optics are sharp and comparable so you may not gain too much from the Rokinon.

      I try my best to respond to as many comments as possible, the parfocal test was something I did not think about at the time. But now I know! "Affectively Parfocal" is a great way to put it! Now i'm not sure if a booster optic would change this because you'd need to make sure the optic itself is lined up correctly for the lens, so you'll have to do some testing and recalibrating of the booster optic to make sure. I know with my Sigma 18-35 back in the day when I used to use a booster, I turned the optic out of alignment with infinity slightly and it actually caused the lens to become affectively parfocal.
      I assume as long as the optic is calibrated to the 50-150's infinity point, then the lens should still act the same way boosted to a GH5.

Tamron has always had some nice optics.
      In the grand scheme of things, it depends on your future plans. If you're staying in the Nikon camp you may or may not eventually step up to a full frame camera for your work. If this is the case, then I would get the Tamron as it would be the better longer term investment.
      Another plus side is if you're working conditions are mainly handheld, that VC on the Tamron will definitely come in handy for you to capture your shots, including combating the slower 2.8 by reducing the shutter speed to match the extra light on a 1.8. The Sigma is definitely more of a tripod or monopod lens, unless you're mainly shooting outside where you can up your shutter speed to cancel the motion blur.
      So in the end, it really comes down to what you see in your future and what you're goals you have for yourself with your creative work. When it comes to lenses they are an investment for the long term, not the short term. So I would write down a checklist of the ways you'd use the lens like.
      - Outside or inside primarily
      - Handheld or Stabilizers
      - Professional work or just for fun
      - Buy new or Buy used (This could be a factor cause used Nikon Sigma lenses go for cheaper than Canon Mount Sigma's)
      Once you figure out all your uses for the lens, with price factored in, you'll be able to get an idea of which lens will best suit you for your current and future needs. Hope this helps!

      Thank you very much for the reply! Sorry about that I didn't mention the particular Model of Tamron. Yes I'm referring to the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 :) I'll be mainly be doing photography but would also be interested to tap in to the Videography World with this lens (Tamron or Sigma).
      I'll be staying in the Nikon Camp since I have Lenses which are for Nikon mounts. I have struggled in the past where in situations needed an Image Stabilization so that feature really gets me to lean towards the Tamron but the Sigma offers a solution for that for having a faster apeture opening so that made me having a hard time in deciding with what lens should I go for.
      The only thing that's holding me back to go for the Tamron is because they are built for FF cameras whereas I have an APS-C camera which is a perfect match for the Sigma lens and acts like a Full Frame 70-200 on an APS-C. It makes me worry about the crop factor being incorporated with the Tamron where a 70-200 f2.8 will perform 105-300 f4.2 on a Crop Sensor Body.
      Would like treat either of the lenses as the "Jack of all trades" lens in my arsenal for Landscapes, Events, Portraits,Vacation, etc.
      Thank you very much again and have a wonderful day :)

      One thing to remember is that with the Tamron, even though it gives you the look of a f/4.2, it does not mean that the light gathering of the lens is a f/4.2, you will still get the same 2.8 light gathering but with a cropped in image.
      I personally think you may be better served with the Tamron 70-200 because you have the VC that can cancel out the 1.5 f stop advantage of the Sigma. And of course, you may eventually upgrade to a full frame camera as Nikon continues their development.
      A quick question, what other lenses do you have in your kit?

      TLDR Filmmaker Thank you so much for this information. I'm starting to lean towards the Tamron G2.
      All I have right now is an ultrawide lens Tokina 11-16 f2.8 DX ii and the standard Kit lens Nikon 18-55 f3.5-5.6 vr. I mostly do landscapes shots and outdoors and now I want to tap in to the world of low light and portraits with a fast zoom lens and still having the capability to do other types of photography :)

      On a different note, I almost wonder if maybe you want to look into getting the G2 24-70mm f/2.8? It tops out right at a very popular 105mm portrait look. For me I haven't played to much in the longer telephoto range so I'm not sure what you have planned on the longer end with the 70-200mm. But just a thought, depending on what other types of photography you want to go for.

      It will work just fine on the BMPCC4k with or without booster. With the booster you may start to see a soft vignette a the telephoto end of the lens. But this has definitely been a great telephoto zoom lens for when I need it. Nice sharpness and contrast.

      @@TLDR_filmmaker Hey, I was wondering how the sharpness is when wide open with a speedbooster since it can go up to f/1.8 with a 0.71x, it would beat the 50-100 1.8 hands down if it is still sharp and usable

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před rokem

      The lens with a speedbooster is sharp wide open. We've used it on one feature film and it performed very well. The specific booster I used was the Viltrox EF-M2 mark 1. I have heard the mark 2 seems to be slightly different in the optic, but I do not have experience on what those differences are. If you go with Metabones, their optics are pretty solid and should keep things sharp for you.
      One thing to note. If you are only planning on using the booster and lens setup for video. Its definitely sharp. If you are planning to use it for photography, that will be a different story because of how much resolution you are getting. 4k resolution it looks nice and sharp.

    This lens with it's power and weight needs stabilization......Good review otherwise .....It will work on a Sony full frame because the a99/2 and a99 "A" Mount models have an aps-c mode........Too bad SIGMA does not make this lens for the Sony "A" Mount, needs an adopter

      Hey hey Howard!

      It's definitely on the heftier side, especially on a GH5 body, the IBIS works well but if its being adapted electronically to a camera that doesn't have IBIS, the OIS in the lens does quite well!
      It really is unfortunately that Sigma discontinued this lens, the range essentially acts like a 70-200 and it's done very well for my needs in certain narrative filmmaking shots.

    hey what's up Tl-dr filmmaker - long time fan here.
    I am currently on the GH5s with Viltrox adapter like you - and I hav ethis old Sigma lens but on a Nikon F mount. I have the first gen. In terms of the adapter I will need to go from Nikon F-mount, tot he VIltrox EF mount - will I need an adapter with electronic contacts?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 6 lety

      Hey hey again Go Polaris!
      Thank you so much for checking out another video!
      Nikon lenses are a bit wonky when it comes to adapting their electronic lenses. As or right now you can adapter a Nikon F to EF mount however you will not be able to control the aperture blades, so you'll be stuck wide open (not always a bad thing).
      There is one F-EF adapter that I saw on amazon that can move the aperture blades manually, but it only works with Nikon G series lenses, not exactly sure if this Sigma would be considered in that camp. But it not having aperture control is no big deal to you, then you can just get a standard F-EF adapter and use the optics of your Sigma.
      I'm not sure how much this effects the GH5s, but it seems like recently Panasonic's new firmware did something weird with how it see non-electronic lenses. People that use full manual lenses with their Viltrox have been reporting that the camera will register a lens error when it didn't use to before. I'm still running old firmware and do not have this problem. Viltrox is aware of the problem and are working to fix it on their end to adapt to panasonic's new firmware.
      Hope this helps! Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting again! Always appreciate it!

    Hi TLDR, been watching this video for some time now until I've finally decided to comment. I hope my comment is not too late as this video 5yrs old now.
    (1) I have been thinking of buying a sigma 50-100mm f1.8. With your nice video, am no-longer considering buying it.
    (2) I have that sigma 59-150mm f2.8 IS version, not used it yet but will be pairing it with a Blackmagic BMCC 2.5K on a forthcoming project soon. Your review gives more confidence
    3. I have bought another Blackmagic, URSA 4K (original big one) and been thinking of buying a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 sport to put on it. Reason is that I saw some technical review on blackmagic website which argued that a full frame lens on a super 35mm crop sensor camera performs far better than a crop sensor lens on a crop sensor body. What do advise? Should I save up for a full frame 70-200mm or I should just get another 50-150mm? Thanks

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hey hey Hussein!
      The main reason Full Frame Lenses are better on a S35 sensor is because you are now only sampling the sharp center image of that lens. Other reasons included that resolving power on a full frame lens is higher.
      The one thing to remember is if you decide to save up for the 70-200, that is going to be a 105-300mm Full Frame equivalent on your S35 sensor, a significantly longer telephoto reach. It will not behave the same as your current 50-150mm. (which is essentially a 70-200 full frame equivalent)
      Will you notice a difference in image quality between the two? Maybe only a little bit when it comes to corner and vignette performance. In my preferences I do not care too much about corner performance when it comes to video because I never frame my main subject in those areas. For photographers its a different story.
      Hope this information helps in determining which lens is better for your needs.

    Thanks for this video. Is auto-focus on this lens working with the Viltrox EF-M2? I've used an old (not the current version) Sigma 70-200 and it does a lot of weird things when using push AF. Sometimes, the aperture will just close and I had to remove and reinsert battery as the aperture just locks up. Sometimes it would focus, sometimes it won't respond at all.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey hey again Clyde!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video deeper in the archives!
      I have not experienced that with the Viltrox and Sigma 50-150 lens. It seems to focus pretty well and accurately.
      There's only a couple things I can think of to try and or why yours may being acting weird.
      1) When you power on the GH5, you must make sure the AF selection knob on your Sigma lens is already set in the AF position instead of MF. If you have it set to MF and then slide it over to AF, the camera doesn't really distinguish the mode being switched.
      2) Could possibly be a firmware thing. I'm actually still on older firmware for my GH5 and Viltrox because I was still on a project when I got these items. So I didn't want to break anything that was already working.
      3) If none of these things solve the problem, I would also give Viltrox a hollar. I haven't emailed them personally, but I hear they've been decently responsive to inquiries. Worth a shot!
      Not sure if any of these things will help, but hopefully it does! Let me know!
