Howdy, guys, and gals. I actually showed too many things in this video. This video explains how we in the stucco industry apply the Dryvit product. This product is located in Hayward at Cal Ply. Their number is 510 429-8877.
We first pressure-washed the complete home. Next, we caulked all the cracks and applied fiber mesh tape over the cracks. I then used my airless sprayer to paint all the eves,
I hand-brushed all the window frames with two coats of paint.
And finally, we applied a Dryvit acrylic stucco finish to the home.

    • Stucco acrylics applied How to apply acrylic stucco.
Hello everyone, take it from a 40-year exterior stucco finishing contractor. All acrylic stucco coatings are not created equal.
In fact, some stucco acrylics are so pathetic that if they offered them to me for free, I’d have to decline, as if I applied these shitty products, I would be responsible, thereby sued or have to redo the work, where the savings in that nonsense.
Some folks would be shocked as one of the biggest names in cementitious stucco finishes is the worst with their acrylic stuccos. How bad is it?
We, as stucco contractors, talk with our fellow stucco contractors and, as a joke, might say, no doubt they used Blaw, Blaw, Blaw, and this is why they are being sued or having to redo their failed acrylic finish?
Our goal is and always has been to say what it is if it’s a great product.
If it’s a crappy or useless product by a company that was sold out to another company or country and used their famous name to sell their garbage, we don’t mention that product!
    We stay positive that way.
(Please note:) all acrylics are NOT created equal. Some are much better than others.
Do your online research well, and Google customer reviews.

Great Videos Kirk & Appreciate your advice & Skills..Here in Phoenix AZ .We use plastic Floats & Pair up depending on wall heights to avoid joints in wall ..Green Floating in Acrylic finish is only done if customer is looking for that particular finish..But not Recommended by commercial contractors..we only use green floats to clean our tools and keep our Plastic Floats clean but everyone is Different long as it puts money in your pocket..its all good 👍

Evening Jesus, we too use the green float to clean our tool but most to pull the sand out of the applied materials.
I have used the plastic ones also.😉

Hey Kirk and Jason, thanks for taking the time to share and put up with the occasional armchair quarterbacks. My Pops always told me, "if you can do better, show me!" He made it to 90 and taught me a lot but I keep learning. Take care Mr.

Hey John, I was doing a float finish with the green sponge float. I would use a steel trowel If I was going to apply a smooth finish or if I were going to skip trowel the plaster.

Hey Tino, no worries, my sons and I have over 300 of these videos at this time and if there is an issue, sometime fellas yell at me, most just let me know. Drag is when I'm doing my job it's sometimes distracting to stop and explain something on film, than resume doing it plus it’s time consuming.
But, fact is I enjoy doing both now. Our newer videos are much better.
Best wishes and have a groovy evening.

Hey Kirk, for a white stucco on a new construction home, would it be easier/better, or is it even possible, to do an add-in white color? I think I seen in one of your videos where you added in a color for a final coat...;o

Good evening John, if you are using La Habra cementitious finish they sell Crystal white, in fact, BMI and or Western also sell the color Christal white, it is the brightest white one can purchase thus apply.
FYI, wear sunglasses when applying, it is blinding when the suns on it.

Hey Kirk how do you handle your scheduling? You know how things can take longer than you though. And you have customers schedualed? I always thought that was more work than the plastering itself. And do you do all your estimates on one day. or do you just do them after work whrn ever is clever? Thank You

      @StuccoPlastering  Před 10 lety +1

Evening Chaddy dude, I take jobs as they come first come first served,
I just take on what I can handle.
If I can't handle it as I'm too busy I usually refer them to someone else if I can.
I try and bid all jobs on the day I look at them, If I get them cool, if not no worries.

that looks pretty rough...do you guys ever skim the walls with primer adhesive and portland, and then throw the finish and float with a niki hard plastic float? it would come out more uniform and less blotchy...those foam and hard rubber floats leave walls very messy looking

Howdy Robert, this was a busy video filmed with a crappy camera long ago, we applied a primer then an acrylic stucco, the sand finish came out beautiful in appearence.

On that type of finish are you supposed to use a plastic float

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  Před 9 lety

Hi Jack Garcia, depends on the type of finish you want.
I wanted a float finish so I applied with a steel trowel and finished with a sponge float.

Since when has dryvit ever said that direct application of finish is acceptable without a basecoat? Color prime is hardly an acceptable form of basecoat. Without a base and mesh structure, how can you figure that the cracks won't come back through? Caulking is hardly an acceptable remedy for stucco cracks. Not knocking, but, I would like your point of view on this. Where I'm from, what you just showed, is highly unacceptable workmanship. I've got to hand it to you though. With the exception of this video, you seem to have more knowledge than most of the shanty swipers online

      Hello Mike Robinson, excellent question.
The Dryvit system that you and I are both familiar with is, say 30 years ago when I was a union plasterer for we did mainly schools and hospitals, Kaiser in Hayward for another example. (lots of commercial projects)
We waterproofed or papered the framing,
Then applied the styrofoam boards, after which we applied a cementitious adhesive by hawk and trowel to embed a fiberglass mesh, with another coat of the same cementitious adhesive to strengthen the mesh.
(We used the Panzer mesh tape for the first ten foot levels for additional strength) as the Dryvit system is more for high rise's where weight is a factor, (no where near as strong as conventional 3 coat traditional stucco)
Of course both system have their advantages.
Lastly we applied the DryVit finish coat which involves a primer and the application of the acrylic color which comes in 5 gallon buckets.
This same finish coat can and is used in the method I am explaining in this video.
My personal opinion is that the DryVit finish coat system out of the 10 different acrylic's I have applied is quite possible the best in all details, I have had the pleasure to apply.
Lastly this is the finish coat that I applied to my own home, maintenance free with color.
Thanks for watching and best wishes.

Dryvit actually does have two textured acrylic finish systems for going over substrates without the use of EPS foam. (Called TAFS 1 and TAFS 2).
TAFS 1 consists of Color prime and acrylic finish, and is meant mainly for going over pre-cast concrete and cement plaster.
TAFS 2 is what you're thinking of where basecoat and mesh are required, and it is meant to go over ICF, cement board, brick, etc.
