Well, it’s been fun. But the time has come for me to move on to bigger things...
Yes, I finally did it! I got the JUPITER-X.
I've been reassessing my studio and music needs, and I have sold off a lot of gear these past few weeks. The JUPITER-Xm has been my go-to synthesizer for 18 months now, but I wasn't using it with my big controller (Novation SL MkIII) any longer. This new JUPITER-X will take less space than the Xm and an unused controller in my studio. And the price on the X is great right now with a $300 rebate from Roland (until the end of June 2021). I continue to be pleased with the direction Roland has taken with X/Xm, so this will be a lifetime synth for me.
NO, the Xm is not really for sale. YES, I will be doing at least one video comparing the two; the workflow, advantages/disadvantages of each, and so on. It’s always bugged me that my Xm-based tutorials might be lost on X users, so I’d like to take some time to address that.
Longer-term I have something else in mind and, for that, it seems important to have both. Also, I've been deeply back into piano lessons and practice, and I decided that I wanted my favorite polysynth to have full-size keys after all.
I truly appreciate the support and interest, and hope to have exciting things to share soon!
Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 by Richard Strauss. Performed with ZENOLOGY Pro using ZEN-Core and Model Expansion Tones

Cool! No need for color sticker for the X! Will you be able to "transfer" your JD800 to the X ? enjoy!

I should be able to transfer that and the Wave Expansions, no problem. I updated the firmware and tested the new Editor with it (👍) but I’ve been enjoying playing it as is so much I haven’t even transferred my own patches and Scenes over yet! One thing I want to do is take the time to rebuild my custom splits, arps, inits and so on with this “new” UI to retrain my brain from the Xm way of doing things.

I told myself I would sell my JD-Xi when I got the Xm but it's still here a year later... it's hard to let go of synths!

I wish that I had the room for a Jupiter X. I am settling for the XM which I am waiting to be shipped from Sweetwater. At least the tiny screen is in the center of the synth. The editor will be quite helpful as long as Roland software behaves. I already have Zenology Pro Analog Icons, but the constant crashes of any host trying to load it (Zenbeats and Digital Performer) have made me hesitant to use it. I haven’t tried it since the most recent RCM update. Maybe it works as it did when I first got it. Congrats on your X.

Space was a big thing for me as well, and the Xm is extraordinary in that it can sonically go anywhere the X can. I’ve been surprised, though, that the X screen was not an issue as I’d worried it might be. Something about pictures of the X make the screen look far away from the player, but it really isn’t.
The Editor is completely standalone so should be more stable. But I use Zenology in Zenbeats on a regular basis (MacOS 10.14) and find it very stable *unless* I leave it open and unattended overnight. Drop a line to the Zenbeats support team (through the menu of ZB). They are very responsive, one of Roland’s best support teams.

Thanks for the feedback. If I continue to have a problem with the software I will contact them.

Congrats as I have been on the fence for the Xm vs X... I mean $1000 is a lot of money, but the small keys are a huge turnoff...time to pull the trigger and just order the X...

    Congrats on getting the X.
I am looking forward to the reviews/tutorials.
I bought the JPX a year ago for myself and around the same time an XM for my son.
My son just couldn’t get into the way of operation of the XM and just prefers using softsynth plugins including the Roland Cloud. Fair enough.
    Ended up selling the XM.
I was on the edge of whether to sell my X, the sounds are great and it has that warm, fat analog sound, but omg! The menu diving!! on that tiny (off to the upper left of the panel) screen!
I have not enjoyed using this synth at all and I much more prefer using my Jupiter 80 to create sounds. The JP80 is an absolute beast, that I get more impressed with every time I use it for sound creation.
I take my hat off to the various users, including yourself, that get great results from the Jupiter X.
    Having said all that however,
the decision to keep my JPX was only made recently because of the release by Roland for a JPX editor for Mac/PC.
Thanks Roland, this is a game changer for me.
Thank you for a great channel.

I think the Editor will make a huge difference, not only using it directly, but giving users a proper “big picture” view of all of the interrelated pieces. As shown in my tutorial last month, I’ve been giving a lot of thought about how to help users break through this barrier, Editor or not. Glad you’re sticking with it for now, and thanks for subbing... more to come!

Yes, I think your right, the editor will absolutely give the “big picture” of what is going on inside the synth.
I am already starting to create my own scenes using the editor.
I kinda struggled before, but in my defence, apart from the tiny screen and menu diving, the JPX is in the middle tier of a 3 tier stand, JP80 beneath it, so accessibility to the X screen whilst sitting is very awkward.
Anyway, thanks again for your great content and definitely looking forward to future vids.
      Cheers 🍻

Cool, say hello, to more controls and full 61 key aftertouch keybed. As far as I'm concerned, I stay with the Xm to preserve my home-studio real-estate :)

Was already thinking from headline that need to unsubcribe this channel, but news were even better, since now i can compare my JP-X to yours directly.

Does the X sound any different than the XM?

    • @RobertSaintJohn
      @RobertSaintJohn  Před 2 lety +2

No, not at all. Absolutely the same synth engine and audio capabilities. It’s only the expanded control surface and better keys that make X feel like a better experience. I still have and use both in different ways.

The morning was crazy and full of distractions, and it wasn't feeling like Christmas at all. I opened it and thought, "Well that's lovely." But once I got it all hooked up and started playing this evening, WOWWWWWWW. I was just telling a friend that I have to figure out what the big difference is that I feel between these two synths. It's not "hamburger and steak", it's not a quality difference. But there was this feeling playing the X where the rest of the world just went away, and it didn't feel technical at all. Same sensation I get when playing my Minimoog. It was like meditation. I just love this synth and I can't wait to tell the world lol
