Manual boxes are great when you have a sympathetic good driver, Worked on the big fleets and the maintenance went down massively when they went Auto and it evened out the Fuel Economy over the Fleet, Running Renault T's now proving to be decent vehicles for what they cost with the superb Volvo Transmission.
Great Blog Dave. Very well explained and recommended. Should be mandatory in every cab. Vital information provided I'm sure that most experienced drivers could learn or remember things that could be the difference between losing your licence, or worse still , your life. As you say yourself, every day is a learning day. Hope you enjoyed your holiday. " Peace 🎉out" 😄
My DAF is 3 over 3..... pain in the ass in the town centres. When you bob her into reverse, do you have to bob her in 1st before reverse? Stops it from grinding... That 2023 diary is great. Super useful. great video keep it up!
Well explained, 4/4 preferred, although the MAN comfort shift is great, a clutch for setting off and a button on the handle of the gearstick as a clutch to press while going through the box. Slap over HH box on merc axor/Actros was a rare to see.The majority of drivers I speak to cannot drive a manual and walk off on agency jobs.
Any driver who can’t use a Man box should have his licence removed…and for walking off a job 😮…my 1st artic job was running 36 tonne of coal in a Volvo F7 (240 bhp) with a 16 Box you changed gear a lot…if you hadn’t used a range change and splitter you soon learned…you got plenty practice…
Although I'm not a HGV driver it is clear to me how important this information can be. This diary would be very handy aspecially when laws or anything als has been changed induring a year. So i consider this information vital and you did explain it very clear! Thank you very much.
I'm starting up as an Owner Driver to do Spain and Italy and learning from you and take Aid to Ukraine and I've been in Ukraine 17 years on and off and I'm Welsh
Totally agree re manual box Learnt years ago in 13 speed and 18 speed roadrangers More control over the truck especially here in New Zealand where we can run up to 58t
Not going to lie wasn’t interested in the dairy at all as a new driver. So skipped through abit caught you talking about it ended up going back and watching. actually sounds very useful… think I might get one sounds like a good bit of useful information. Found myself needing an answer to something trying to google it and not getting an straight answer. Be handy to have it all written down.
Hi Dave, great video keep up the good work, received the HGV diary as a Christmas present and as a new driver I give it a massive thumbs up, stuffed full of information and easy record keeping. keep the VLOG's coming.
Hi dave I passed my test in an AEC mandator v8 6 gears but double de clutch through the gears up adn down bit harder than today I agree more control.pete.cheers.
Been driving since early 90 lol been there done that got t shirt and ain’t a day goes by ya don’t learn something when driving and those that say they don’t are the ones that get in trouble at the first bend 🤷♂️
Hi Dave as a manual Driver whats your take on Freewheeling/Coasting (aka Silent Seventh)in Neutral up to a Stop sign or roundabout like they do in US/Canada ?
Mate, I understand why and it's fine doing that review for the book for free. But when YFoods etc, come calling don't be so quick to say you will do it for free. Doin ads for companies like that are totally different. Take the extra money while you can!

Comfort Shift was great if you didn't rush it hardly anyone has a clue it ever existed 🤣
As an old retired driver only ever using a manual box, it was great to go back down memory lane. Thanks David, keep up the good work. Ross 🏴

Hi Dave, in regards to Manual vs Auto gearboxes on the HGVs, would you save more money on fuel using an auto box or manual gearbox?
Manual/automatic … oh boy
