    JD, we really appreciate you watching our video and for making a video giving your thoughts on the tests we did! We appreciate the shout-out as well! You're one of the reasons we decided a F350 was the best option for our set-up, versus the F450 we originally thought we needed!

    I like your position on the F450. Your videos helped me choose the F350 DRW w/ 4.10 rears as a compromise as a full-time RV situation. Pure towing I would of went with the F450 but where we stay two to four weeks in a spot we had to factor in that we are using it as our daily driver when disconnected. My next investment will be the airbags in the rear. Towing I handle the eastern mountains like a boss and never lose speed. Choose what is right for you! Keep up the great work

    JD, you have NEVER said that we need an F450...EVER! You recommend the ¾ ton or 1 ton single rear wheel truck...occasionally you say 1 ton dually pickup truck. You are an engineer so safety is the number one priory for you...and you express that when you review an RV. I appreciate your candor and your opinion on the safety side of your reviews! Keep it up sir!!!

    That Paving New Paths video has almost convinced me to keep my 2016 F350 tow boss. Wide track frt axle, 4:30 rear gear. Platinum edition. Was supposed to be my bandaid for F450 that’s been in order for almost a year!!!!

    Great video JD. I don’t think I have ever watched a video in which you side an F-450 would be the truck to have for any any 5th wheel or TT. You’ve have mentioned 1/2, 3/4 an 1 ton trucks and I’ve been watching your channel for almost 5 years now. Thanks for sharing all the information and content you do.

    Wide track front and fenders look cooler, turning radius, and the F-450 badge on the side are the reasons I drive an F450.

    I was going to buy an F-350, but the dealer didn't have one in stock (model year end deal shopping). When I drove the F-450 and experienced the wide track front suspension, I was sold. Kevin @ Paving New Paths did a great job of doing a side-by-side comparison of the weights, capacities, running over the scales, and turning capabilities. Both are great trucks, but neither is perfect for every application. I'm certain I would have been happier with the better fuel economy on the F-350!

    The travel community is very collaborative and supportive.
    You are spot on that every rig has its place and one doesn’t fit all.

    Great vid. Just bought a 2022 F-450 and I was blown away by the ride quality. Averaging 15 mpg as well so not too disastrous. Love the 48 gallon tank and love that it pulls out 15k lbs. 5th wheel like it’s not there. The tracking on the road is a bit disconcerting but apart from that it’s the best vehicle I’ve owned.

    when we had an opportunity to buy a better pickup for our fifth wheel, a Grand Design Reflection 31MB, i chose a Ram 3500srw with the Aisen transmission and a 50 gallon fuel tank. We have taken 8 trips across Texas from our hill country home and have had zero problems along with better braking and control. The previous pickup worked okay, but was too small and we knew it. My wife did NOT want any dually as she would often drive it often (usually unloaded). She loves the pickup (except for parking, but we live in a rural community). It has been a boon to our travel with plenty of payload and capability, especially since we added the goose box to the trailer! It also is a more practical vehicle than any dually, even though they have even better control. We plan on staying around 12,000 lbs. GVWR on any future trailer so our needs won't change. Thanks for your insane amount of work you do for content!

I went with the F450 and I’m so glad I did as we have a 43’ fifth wheel and the slight differences made so much difference in our application. Like you state… it’s all about your situation and my wife and I are so thankful for your insight and knowledge that helped us be so comfortable and confident with our choices. If ya don’t mind sharing what kinda fifth wheel do you have? We are about 12 months out from ordering a truck and are looking at a Beacon and I am concerned about pin weight.

    • @shanebowersox4415
      @shanebowersox4415 Před rokem +1

      @@Atxjrdguy We have a 43’ Keystone Avalanche 390ds. It weighs in dry at 14,140 and 16,500max. Our F450 is technically overkill but it is extremely stable and when a semi passes, it doesn’t even budge us. As you may have heard… one of my favorite aspects of this truck is the turning radius. I’ve gotten into campsites with ease that I feel wouldn’t have happened without that capability. I’ve even had other campers tell me they never thought I’d get this rig into the site. This truck has given so much confidence with anything I need it to do. As far as pin weight, I can’t say since I don’t know what my pin weight is, but I don’t have bags on the 450 and it is smooth and stable at all times with our camper, and is still level without the bags. Other thing is, those commercial 19.5 rims/tires absolutely make a difference in stability over 17” 350 regular tires from what I’ve learned from other campers with 350’s. Hope this info helps in some way.

    I had watched their video and commented on it and they replied to my comment. I like the looks of the 450 with the 19.5 inch wheels, I like the turning radius, but what drove me to the 450 was the height of the bed the 450 is lower to the ground than the 350 and quite a bit lower than the Chevy or the Dodge and I needed that to get under my fifth wheel trailer so that the trailer would still be level and the truck level. I've had a 2008 a 2010 a 2016 and a 2020 all F450s. And less face it going to Safeway or home Depot and being able to make a 90° turn and park it in a parking spot between the lines the first try is pretty nice. Bigger brakes are nice to have 14 ply tires are nice to have until you replace them.

  • @acdii
    @acdii Před rokem +2

    Nailed it on the steering. That the #1 reason I went to an F-450, because really, other than more payload and TPMS, the F-350 DRW doesn't have an advantage for MY use case. Getting my 43' long 5th wheel in my drive with the F-350 SRW was a PITA because the truck would get into the ditch on the opposite side, and the F-450 clears is easily. The DRW F-350 would be even Further into the ditch.

    Good video JD , no since bashing anyone,Paving New Paths did a very informative video, retired out of the trucking industry , and been pulling 5th wheel campers with duallys since 1994. A lot has changed, saying it mildly! I presently have a 2020 450 King Ranch and tow a 21K Mobile Suite [scaled weight] up and down the east coast either on 95 or 81 and cross over to 95 via 77 and have to say it's a very comfortable no stress experience.I'm tow at around 64mph, and get a constant 10.2/ 10.5 mpg is about 1mpg better than my previous truck.I think the generation 3 Powerstroke , the 10 speed and the 4;30 rear is a perfect application for heavy towing, if your in a hurry and tow 70/75 your going to Pay AT The Pump! To each their own!

    Enjoy many of your videos… love all the RV and Truck Tech as I head toward retirement & new 5’er purchase. I just found this video, which is another informative video! Your comments toward the other video which prompted this video, was gracious.
    I found the other video informative, and agree clearly a lot of time was invested. Although following & reading comments it became forefront to present the F450 as misleadingly advertised, misrepresenting and F450 Buyers were essentially fooled and purchase of F350 was the best choice; Which for his needs & budget probably accurate, although not accurate for Others.
    The focus of justification was on payload legal caps which is an important variable but certainly not the deciding factor for many Buyer / Owners. The greater design limitations for weight & tow of the F450 clearly exceed the F350, and that has value to many Perspective Buyers & Owners. The greater design capacity, load stability and steering provide greater confidence, and if weight is exceeded, which likely is more common than expected. Both trucks are derated, although F450 much more.
    The ride may be little rougher, but upper trim line isn’t as noticeable… and a few mods help.

    I just replaced my 3500 dually Ram with a 2022 f450 lariat. I switch back and forth driving the 2 trucks and here are my opinions. The Ram has 110k on it and has been reliable except for needing a turbo at 100k. The main reasons I went with the 450 are the turning radius, 10 speed trans and bigger brakes. I tow boats and many of my customers trailers don't have functioning brakes. The larger brakes on the 450 make a huge difference to me and although the powerstrokes exhaust brake isn't as strong as the Cummins I find that manually downshifting I get almost as much slowing as the Cummins but I do miss the sound. It only took driving the Ford a few hundred miles for my brain to adjust to the wide track axle being out of the wear grooves in the highway. When the grooves are really bad I just move over to the second lane which is often since I live in Ca.

    I've towed Rv's for over 40+ years and even spent 4 years towing 'joint's' with a class 8 in my young years. I've followed you for~6 years and feel you do a great job explaining the trucks & tow capabilities. Yet you receive a lot of half cocked responses with people misquoting you and or trying to make absolutes where there may not be one. Yes a 1/2t can tow over 6k # but lets talk averages and reasonable average skill sets. No one ever complains they have too much truck; but Lord help you in high winds or down a steep hill with a large load pushing you and you need to stop; not having ample vehicle. There is a huge difference between towing 8k with a flatbed or a boat or a TT with high sides. There are very few absolutes and one must weigh their abilities, comfort & uses wisely. People tow RV trailers with Class 8's as well.

    I just got an F350 duelly king ranch from my dad. The trailer I wanted was too big for my tundra and my dad had two f350s and he unfortunately got to the point that he could not use them anymore so he offered me one for free. He had a 2001 f350 and an 07 350 Duelly. He wanted me to have the newer truck So I took it. It’s got 87k miles and is bone stock and well maintained. I’ve had it for a few weeks and it’s the best truck for towing but the second best free truck I got from my dad.
    The best was his 1970 Chevy CST/10 shortbed 402 big block TH400 4:10 12 bolt. I got it in 1997 when I was 16 and still have it. Great truck for towing but needs overdrive. I’m working on that. Dad passed last Saturday. He was a great man, great father, and has been my hero my whole life. Miss you pops..

    JD , I also am glad that you make these videos even though I own a 2007-1/2 Ram 3500 dually 4x4 with a 6.7 Cummins, my truck has 3:73 gears and I pull my 40’ gooseneck trailer loaded with hay or my 25’ gooseneck with my John Deere 450E long track with a 20ton PTO winch and it’s 6 way blade and have never had a problem with power with my 3:73 gears and small 75hp programmer and the transmission turned up in pressure a lil it’ll bark 3&4 gears loaded. But even saying that I love the F450 because of the tighter turning radius, is it possible to order one with a higher set of gears. I remember way back in the late 1990s and early 2000s Dodge offered its duallies with as high as a 3:56 set of gearing in their diesel trucks

    Great video. I have a heavy slide-in camper that might have been better served with the 350 DRW but I went with the 450 due to turning. As for ride I had the truck lifted and Open Country ATIII tires put on which greatly helped the ride and still have the ability to carry the GVWR. IF you are willing to spend some $ you can address some of the issue he mentions.

    JD, I always get the question, why do you pull with an F-450 FX4 (2020), the simple answer is safety, pull vehicle vs tow. We pull a 2018 Montana 3820FK, I believe the GVWR is 16-17k. Most of our travel is on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Rt 13, lots of stoplights and businesses. We have had to use all the brakes on numerous occasions, people just seem to need to get in front of you to make the turn into a business. We started with a 2018 F-350 Dually, awesome tow vehicle, just not enough safety for me and my family. We plan to get a Tow Hauler, 3 axels, and believe the F-450 will handle the 3 axel push better in a bad situation. FX4, skid plates offer some additional protection from those pieces of semi truck tires that are in the road. Keep up the good work.

    Excellent video. I too have a ruby red F450 (2019). Best truck out there for towing in my opinion. The 4.30 gears, the wide track front axle, beefier front frame section, thicker axle shafts and commercial tires.
    I have a 47' toy hauler (Jayco Seismic), I'm well within the limits that are on the sticker.
    If 14,000lbs wasn't the required limit, the F450's numbers would be much higher than the F350's. Does that matter? Well, there's a certain Ram owner out there with a severely bent fram that would say 'yes'.
    Put the wide track axle on an F350 and I might be a buyer, but that's just too good of an option to give up for a truck that isn't as capable.
    Also, to me, the commercial tires are like gold. Yeah, they can be a pain to get balanced, but when you do, you now have tires that give you a much higher piece of mind as they are much stronger.

    Both are great videos. I've had an F450 on order for about 9 months. Still waiting to be scheduled...I went with the 450 solely for the wide-track front axle. I prefer the wheel/tire and gearing options of the 350, but what are you going to do. As others have said, an F350 with a wide-track axle would be ideal. I'm hauling a 16.5k GVWR 5th wheel, so I don't need the full capability of either a 350DRW or a 450, but I like the extra stability. Thanks for the great videos and info! My opinion is bottom line, if you tow a heavy and longer 5th wheel then the wide track be it a F-450 or a Ram 5500 is the way to go. Personally I tow a 40’ 5th wheel 18,000 lbs with a Ram 3500 ( didn’t have the money to move to the better option so I compromised the steering radius) and have found that turning radius is paramount in many RV parks due to the tight quarters. I drive my nephews F450 towing a 24 ton tag along and the steering is phenomenal. Really makes me want to upgrade, but it comes down to dollars, especially being retired and a full time RV’er.

The current is a CCSB and hate it(not in love witht he 3.31) for the $1800 for the DRW it's worth it. The 17" tires are far cheaper than the 18". The older 450s may have been rough but the new ones are so smooth and ours tracks straight going down the road. The difference in ride is so close empty that you cant tell, when loaded with a heavy trailer, the 450 rides much nicer and smoother! Good video. I went from a 2012 F350 to a 2019 F450 pulling a 18k 5er. The F350 pulled great and we had a great time and it was the longest I've ever owned a vehicle. Time to upgrade and I had heard about that wide track and took a F450 for a test drive and fell in love. To me, it makes all the difference in the world and rides better than my F350. I wish it were as smooth as my wife's F150 but that is the nature of the class. It did wander about in the lane when I first got it but I don't know if it's my driving compensating for it or the tires are broken in, but I don't notice it anymore. If there was one thing I could change, I would make it a variable ratio it that even exists.

    I thought the sulastic shackles civilized the ride of the leaf springs? It seems to me that no brand of pickup is okay in stock form. Both my half ton pickup and my daily driver SUV had to be modified to meet my needs. My wife's 3/4 ton Ram needed new shocks, brakes, and tires to be acceptable. Of course the point of the Cummins over gas is the VGT turbo, since we drive big hills like Conway summit and Tioga pass.
    I agree about the front axle steering cut. My dream truck is a Ford F550 4wd, or Ram 5500 4wd, modified as an overlander. Carrying a 4 wheel pop up camper bigger than the Hawk model, that we currently have. I like how the gearing of the heavier chassis trucks. Allow floatation tires to be added easily, without tearing into the axles. And after the speedometer is recalibrated. A friend of mine found that he had fuel economy competitive with the lighter trucks.
