Thank you for sharing this stellar recording of North’s score, so rich in color and a perfect complement to the film. I had the privilege of interviewing him at the time he received an honorary Oscar. He was kind, soft-spoken and highly articulate, as he shared memories of 1950s Hollywood and beyond.

Based on the life of Emiliano Zapata “Viva Zapata!” (1952) focuses on his journey to become a leading figure of the Mexican revolution. Featuring Marlon Brando, Anthony Quinn, Jean Peters among other known faces and directed by Elia Kazan “Viva Zapata!” marks a fantastic cinematic experience you shouldn't miss.
Concluding the staff of greatly talented people comes composer Alex North, who brought in a fantastically colorful and rhythmical score that became pretty well known among film music aficionados during the years, even receiving two re-recordings by Elmer Bernstein and Jerry Goldsmith. Today we will listen to the film recordings, conducted by Alfred Newman. Enjoy!

Alex North knocked this one out of the park. His studies in Mexico really helped with the writing of this score. The Newman version is great. Perhaps someday you could do the same with the Goldsmith version? Either way, good work on this suite. Thanks Fred.

Anthony Quinn's flow. Brando's brood. And Alex North score.
What more one would wish in a movie.

    Grazie Fred.💥👍🏻
    Viva Alex North!❤👏🏻

Hello, Fred! For one of the great Elia Kazan classics ( written by John Steinbeck ), the nominee composer was indeed North. The son of poor Russians parents, North was so good talented that he always got excellent scholarships. In addition to touring Mexico in 1939 with dancer Ana Sokolow, North stayed there to improve his studies with Silvestre Revueltas ( also composer of soundtracks, with eight works between 1935 and 1940 - year of his death ). At the time of filming, North accompanied Kazan to Mexico, picking up folklore and songs among the peasants. These themes are perfectly integrated into the score, with the use of typical instruments, such as the " vihuela de mano ", the baroque guitar ( played here by the Brazilian Laurindo de Almeida - with was also part of the orchestras of Elmer Bernstein and Nino Rota - in " Zapata's Love ", " Innocente's Death " and " Josefa 's Love " ), and above all, the trumpets: as victory approaches ( " Huerta " ), we hear little pieces of the anthem of Mexican Revolution: the " corrido " " La Adelita ", composed in 1913 by Lieutenant Antonio Gil del Rio ( from the troop of General Francisco " Pancho " Villa ) for his beloved, the nurse Adela Perez, who took care of the wounded. Is " La Adelita " ( which has already been performed by Nat King Cole ) which closes the film and the soundtrack, with an entire verse performed by the orchestra. A great job on all levels!! Thanks and bye, Fred!!

Because of its Mexican spirit and influence, Viva Zapata is reminiscent of Max Steiner's magnificent film score to Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Well, it also reminds me of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, as well.
