  • In this video, I use the Kreg 520 and 720 pocket hole jigs and give you my honest review. My situation is unique as I am working in a tight space as a result of MY OWN ERROR. Regardless, it still helps to see how useful each jig is in situations you didn't expect.

    Not sure if I’m missing something here, but I usually do all my pocket holes before I assemble something

    i really appreciate your honesty here and showing the real life pains of needing to do the holes after the fact and how the tools handle it. Well done!

    The 720 is great for what it's designed to do. I had never done pocket holes before, so I was new to building with them. I built my first custom book case. What made it go smooth? Drill the holes PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY.

    For situations where you already started assembly & forgot to add some of the pocket holes would it be easier to use the 320 model?

      It could be! I have one somewhere, I'll try and find it lol.

    I've got the 720, and I like it a lot.
    For pocket holes that I've forgotten along the way (and for furniture repair, the main use) I've got one of kreg's mini, one hole at a time drill guides. I rarely forget to add a pocket hole, but yeah, using the bench mount 720 unit for upside-down inside-out operations like that seems like a huge pita.

    I don't think they're made to do what you're doing. They have the small ones you can clamp on.

    You may want to get the Armor tools pocket hole jig, or the Massca Pro model. Those are great alternatives. I have the Kreg K4 and I have to agree that one was really well designed.

    • @TheWebbRanch
      @TheWebbRanch  Před rokem

      I love the K4 and have really started to love the 520 because my old brain keeps forgetting to male the pocket holes before I assemble lol. I've been using the 720 here and there and it gets the job done but I'm still not in love with it

    I too have the k-4 and I love it. I was sadly disappointed when they changed the entire system. I was going to upgrade to the k-5 about the time the 5/720 's came out and then everywhere I had seen the k-5 no longer had them. The k series in my opinion is the best. All the guides were interchangeable and could be used separate from the jig.

    • @TheWebbRanch
      @TheWebbRanch  Před rokem +1

      My k4 is still my favorite but I have to say, the 520 has been AMAZING. I am definitely in love with that one. The 720 just sits in a drawer as a backup now.

    • @wulf67
      @wulf67 Před 6 měsíci

      @@TheWebbRanchWhy don’t you take it out of the drawer and clamp it to a bench like it was made to do, and then you would see it and remember to drill your holes before you assemble?

    An old carpenter used to tell me that “failing to plan is planning to fail.” He was wrong. This video shows just how much effort and meticulous attention to detail can go into planning to fail.
    Instead of searching for tools that make it easier for you to do things the wrong way, why not just commit to training and conditioning yourself to do it the right way?
    I’m not busting your balls. I have ADD as well. I have to leave myself cues everywhere to remind myself to do simple things at the right time. I would 100% be the one who would forget to get my kid out of the back seat of a hot car. People would curse and spit on me and ask “how the F could you forget something like your child in a hot car, asshole?”
    How? I saw a squirrel, that’s how.
    Why don’t you clamp that jig onto your assembly bench and leave it there? Put it right in the middle of where you do your glue-ups so you will see it (or even have to move it) before you even get started assembling a box without drilling those holes first.
    How much easier would it be to just drop each piece in that jig at the same place, the same height, and the same angle every time, compared to twisting yourself up like a contortionist trying to bleed the clutch hydraulics on a ‘94 Ford Ranger, discovering eight brand new yoga positions just to drill six pocket holes?

    I’ve used a Kreg jig since I first saw one at a trade show in the mid 90’s! Forgive me for saying this you must be an idiot to continually make the same error over and over with this system and then make a video admitting it to the world! It is almost idiot proof. I have to admit that I don’t have this newer version, mine is the older pre K4 model. I have made hundreds of things with it and it still goes and goes. I have made errors of course but one thing I will agree with you is that this creation is very bulky compared to the slimmer model. Let’s say this is more a consumer model than a pro model, simplified for the casual user who doesn’t have time to RYF manual. Yet pros use it all the time why, because it gets the work done in a spectacular way economically almost every time and it’s dead simple!

    this is a great video, very informative and helpful, however you need to fix your sound levels my guy.
    i feel like right now you are doing not much to the audio track when editing, which is keeping the "peaks" in the recording as the loudest volume. from a viewing perspective, this means your talking is way lower in volume than other youtube videos, so what is a comfortable device volume for other videos is suddenly too quite for your video. this means people have to increase the volume of their device to hear you properly, which would be fine, if your audio didnt then spike to the new max volume when your drill runs.
    try watching a few of the top trendng videos at a comfotable volume level, then try watching this one to see what i mean.
    not sure what program you're using to edit, but i'd recomend watching a video or two on optimisng the audio track. i almost turned this off the first time the drill ran it was so loud after having to turn it up to hear you properly haha. getting a handle on optimising the auido will really take your content to the net level.

    I'm waiting for 3rd party (Chinese) counterfeits made of metal. Kreg needs to stop making cheap crap out of flimsy plastic if they want serious customers and not just home-DIYers. The 720 is over-engineered IMHO. I use and love an all metal knock-off pocket hole jig modeled after the K4 and mounted to a wide base that is clamped for bench-top use and it works great.
    I bought the 520 because I got sick of trying to fiddle with an old R3 when I need to drill holes in existing projects (tight/odd spaces), but gladly pay 3x for an all-metal version. Yes, sometimes you need to drill holes after a project is assembled.

    Even the k4 or k4 wouldn’t be used that way.
    It sits on the bench flat.
    If you used your k4 like that you need to not be a woodworker and take up colouring books with fat crayons….do you walk around wearing a hockey helmet ?
