Petman Tests Camo

- The PETMAN robot was developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from the DoD CBD program. It is used to test the performance of protective clothing designed for hazardous environments. The video shows initial testing in a chemical protection suit and gas mask. PETMAN has sensors embedded in its skin that detect any chemicals leaking through the suit. The skin also maintains a micro-climate inside the clothing by sweating and regulating temperature. Partners in developing PETMAN were MRIGlobal, Measurement Technology Northwest, Smith Carter, SRD, CUH2A, and HHI.

I thought the same thing
+Rex Nemorensis agreed. now i want to play half life i miss the gravity gun.
Lol
heh
huh huh huh
Imagine if you're with a team all wearing suits handling hazardous materials. And at the end of the day you all remove your suits and one of them was this thing.
jahahahaha
Thank you for being the one person with an imagination that doesn't go straight to violence when it comes to robotics haha
+Caleb Sålstrom And then the robot pulls out a BAZOOKA and kills everyone!
And then he ask you '' I need your boots, your clothes, and your motorcycle''
+jahahahaha or all of them but you...
jahahahaha then you realize you're the robot,
I need to see PETMAN trying to silently buy something from a store.

Yeah that's would be amazing !!
lmao
id be funny if he tryed vying skittles

It walks like it has the biggest balls in the world

He acts it @chamkampis
With the clothes and mask, this thing is right in the middle of the uncanny valley.
creepy but not as creepy as a zombie would be
Sam Krahn That's not what the uncanny valley is about. Bob. Just Bob. hit the nail on the head. I was about to say the exact same thing when when I scrolled down to the comments it was like yup! Boom! The thing is horrifyingly wrong! It's just so ugh. Disgusting! It is so human like but has something fucked up that your instinct says is wrong that makes you want to destroy it and / or flee.
BaSH PROMPT Actually yes it is, it's humanoid, yet it's not something we are familiar with and therefore don't know if it's dangerous or not. It's exactly the same as the robot.
I was JUST saying how other robots with wigs and fake-human faces don't freak me out, but PETMAN gives me "Uncanny Valley" reaction and then I scrolled down and saw this post. AGREED. FUCKING AGREED.
Bob. Just Bob. Looks pretty innocent to me. Then again, it's just some puppet strung up to test suits, so it's not going to try replacing me any time soon.
Not many people could tell if that was a robot from a distance.
I sure as hell couldn't.
It's just look like someone who needs a massive shit
I don't think anyone could. The only thing that would give it away is the sound of the servo motors...But those probably couldn't be heard beyond 10 feet away. If it was walking across a field at say, 50 yards, I would swear it to be a human. This shit is fuckin spooky
If It was squating dressed up like that I would think it is a gopnik
@Scott Cupp He also walka... Wierd

+lennox285679 To you maybe. Not to me.
+Noah Williams That's good news. Then you won't panic when the government sends 8 of them to crush you into bright red puree for failing to declare your flea market sales last year on the weekends. It is all part of good governance.
Texas Arcane Assuming that it ever will be used for that, and that it's got super strength. And even if it were used for law enforcement the government would quickly find that most of their laws need to be rethought since it can't make judgement calls in complex situations.
Noah Williams Police now can't make judgement calls in complex situations. That won't stop them from getting complete autonomy. Bend over for Mr. Rapey's street correction and grab your ankles, citizen. This will learn you. Everyone will be better when they learn citizenry lessons from Mr. Rapey the buttf*ck robot. Was PETMAN classified? I'm so sad we never got to see any more of him. A truly astonishing robot.
PETMan wasn't classified, it's just that it's no longer being developed by Boston Dynamics, and is entirely used to test protective clothing. They've essentially stopped trying to make extremely humanlike robots and have instead moved on to making robots that walk extremely well, as evidenced by Spot and Atlas.
@@commscan314 sad... but from what you're saying PETMAN is still around? Being developed and tested by some other company?
@@theteddychannel8529 Probably not. I assume Boston Dynamics sees PETMan as a finished product.
@@theteddychannel8529 read the end of the video. It was made for the DoD!
It was just some tool to test clothing.
I want to see them put it in a public area and watch everyone around it get super paranoid that it's going to do something horrible

Can people just stop saying this thing will kill people?
It would only do that if it was programmed to!
There is not very much AI software that will make it kill.
-also I know this is a joke I’m just getting slightly upset-
To test clothing... Everyone knows this will be used for waaaay more than that.
We had a robot similar to this in the basement to of my old university as well to test a walking algorithm to help people with artificial limbs be able to walk over obstacles. More practicality than you think, then just I-Robot overload machines.

Imagine you're in a abandoned hospital.
You're exploring, and gathering anything cool-looking.
Then, as you step forward on an empty hallway, you see the figure of a man.
You step a little more forward, and notice its a man on a hazard suit with a gas mask, and he is moving towards you.
You call him out, ask what he is doing here, but he keeps moving.
You grab your pocket knife, but the man stops.
2 seconds of looking at each other later, you hear foot steps behind you.
Its another man on a hazard suit.
But before you almost run in panic, the second man stops and speaks on a robot-like voice:
2-No hazardous entities found.
1-Understood.
Then you walk towards the first man, and then discovers he's not human.

For Anyone wondering Petman was not the predecessor to atlas because atlas was already a thing before this so Petman is either scraped or put into hibernation for the time being.
It seems that petman is more of a prototype for chassis design and mechanical parity of humanoid formfactor, while atlas is the “simpler” body suitable for the software development of autonomy
@@twitte0king petman is designed to test the livability of CBRN rated clothing or clothing to be used Along MOPP
The Japanese have been leading the way in robotics for a very long time, but watching this demonstration, I dare say Boston Dynamics has not only appeared to close the gap in progress but maybe even has a leg up on the them..?
thats cause they have DoD funding hahaha. nothing in america gets the funding it needs till they find a military application for it...

Boston Dynamics = Locomotion.

So there going to be using these electro-skeletons to embark throughout chernobyl or something? Because we haven't had a war which involves chemicals for the longest time. (Unless you count all the chem trials in the air lol)
Officially, this particular robot was actually designed to test military uniforms. It simulates an internal climate like what it'd be like if a sweaty human body were in there, and then it uses sensors to determine how comfortable the uniform would be to wear.
Unofficially, well, y'know. Terminator.
Can we have an update on petman?

Hazmat suit robot:
Amazing!! Good work.
He is one fusion power cell away from being a real live terminator. It's impressive how the thing can move realistically, but he was NOT made so that the army could test gear. You wanna test some gear? Stick a soldier in it.
And see weather or not he dies of radiation poisoning? No thanks...
Unless it's just non-hazmat gear, in which case yeah soldier.
Yeah, because testing hazmat suits by putting people in them and then FUCKING GASSING THEM is a good idea.
You seriously believe anyone would go through the trouble of making this kind of robot in order to test a suit? Please. Oh, it is probably very USEFUL also for this purpose, but it was not the reason why it was built. And Hazmat gear is not exactly a novel invention. Like, we've had exposure protection gear of every variety for about a century. All of a sudden robots are needed to test them? Again, please.
DID ANYONE READ THE DESCRIPTION? PETMAN SWEATS

Great. Now Google will become a defense contractor.
Technically this makes them a defense contractor. This company in particular has an existing contract with DARPA and the DOD. It still has to run out, unless they find a way to legally exit the contract.
Are you being sarcastic? Because honestly, I'm pretty freaking happy that Google is investing in the robot development industry. They have what is needed to make more progress, faster.
If they keep the tech out of the military I will be ecstatic. As a combat veteran these would be tough to take down in the field.
Bruno You know of course that the military is indeed researching this for more than just "rescue" bots.
they hold it with cables so that it does not escape
It looks really impressive and his moves are very natural. More impressive is his silent operation. I cant hear any el. motor buzzing. I wonder how you succeeded that?
