  • ►The first-generation Volvo XC90 is an easily acquired and generally reliable choice of transportation, known for exceeding well over 200,000 miles without much fuss. However, every XC90 needs proper maintenance, including suspension work. A strut and spring replacement is critical to maintaining a safe and comfortable suspension system, and it isn't a tough job either. Your Volvo's suspension is specifically designed to give off a signature European feel, but that feel weakens as mileage increases. Eventually, the car will lean, roll, and bounce far more than it ever should, reducing your ability to control it safely.
    With a few simple tools and maybe a friend, you can replace the front struts and springs in no time.
    Follow along with Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er, as he walks you through a strut ad spring replacement on a P2 Volvo XC90.

    Another video made with perfect explanations, no annoying background music drowning out instructions and camera angles from all needed vantage points. I wish more video makers would follow your example. I would like to know where you recommend getting some of those tools you used. The digital torque wrench is off the hook. Thanks again.

    This really helped. I did notice you cannot fit the three bolts through the top engine bay area any old way. It actually is fool proof, and it will only align one way (the straight part facing the outside of the vehicle). I rotated it just to see if it could be installed incorrectly and you couldn't. FYI

    Identical for all P2's. When I did my V70 with Bilsteins I had to improvise some rivets to hold the ABS wire clip to the new struts. Upper spring seats wear out fast! Febi Bilstein no! Genuine Volvo yes.

    • @zzoinks
      @zzoinks Před rokem

      The Bilstein is no good?

    • @reallyhappenings5597
      @reallyhappenings5597 Před rokem

      @@zzoinks They are fine although I wish I'd gone with the B4 rather than B6. I was saying the upper strut mount/insulator tends to wear out. My so-called heavy-duty IPD replacements are clunking. Pretty much every "HD" part I've bought from IPD fell short of the factory part it was meant to improve upon.

    On full assembly's, is there actually any difference between left and right fronts besides the ABS bracket? One brand is selling a single unit for both L and R, other brands have different SKU# for Left and Right...

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  Před rokem +1

      The same strut is used on either side. Our kit is linked in the description below, which shows part numbers and all that is included!

    On the top end of the strut assembly, is the large rubberized skirted washer supposed to touch the bearing surface or it just floats above it, with some gap between the skirt and the bearing?
    What is its purpose?

    • @tylerocarz7153
      @tylerocarz7153 Před měsícem

      When it is being pushed in the force is on the cross nut. When it is extending the force is on the top rubber washer. The top washer is there because when the strut is being compressed and decompressed quickly it will not separate from the piece with the bering. It has rubber on it to prevent any clicking sounds from the mount.

    so just for a noisy part at the top you are replacing the whole unit?

    • @tylerocarz7153
      @tylerocarz7153 Před měsícem

      I think hes replacing it because they are cheap quick struts and will need replaced soon anyways. I just found out someone put duralast quick struts on mine before i got it so i am doing the same. They actually don’t handle bad but they are starting to make some noise.

    Spring seats (upper insulator) fail a lot on these, annoying.

  • @ryanwilson6162
    @ryanwilson6162 Před rokem +1

    Seems like you guys could make some coin selling the complete strut assemblies so folks don't have to mess with the coils. The cheaper aftermarket brands seem to offer this with the tradeoff of lower quality.

    • @alainvoit4862
      @alainvoit4862 Před rokem

      Since there are many spring variations for each volvo model (basic vs sport vs Rdesign vs etc...), I might guess that it would better to do it this way instead of fitting "one spring fits all"

      FCP did offer " quick strut " assemblies from Sachs like 2 years ago, put pulled them off market because they said they had too many returns and problems with them.
