-- Final Cut Pro Tutorial: Complete Beginners Guide to Editing --
Final Cut Pro has taken out the top spot in our 'Best Video Editing Software for Mac' roundup for the past two years running. It's also one of the video editors that we use here at Primal Video to edit our CZcams videos.
So it’s not surprising that we get a lot of requests for a Final Cut Pro tutorial. Which is why we thought it was time to deliver with this COMPLETE guide! While FCP can be a bit difficult for beginners to get the hang of, we'll make it super easy for you by breaking everything down step-by-step.
As well as a full walkthrough of the software, we'll go over the simple tips, keyboard shortcuts tricks and techniques that can dramatically improve your editing game.
In this video, I'll show you exactly how to use Final Cut Pro - along with some next level Final Cut Pro tips! Even if you’re a complete beginner, you'll be editing with FCPX in no time!

My best tip would be keyboard shortcuts! They speed up your workflow so much and you don't have to spend that much time setting them up. I specifically like "C" for cut and "F" for delete because then you can keep your left hand on the keyboard and your right hand on your mouse.
One of the best tutorials I've come across. Some videos make it way more complicated than it should be. Thanks!
Wow, so awesome to hear it. Thanks! 👍
I've watched a lot of final cut beginner tutorials but this is the one that I needed. Thank you so much!
You're welcome - glad you found it useful! 🙏
This was wildly helpful, thank you! I’ve been editing close to two years and just today learned about that audio “range selection” option (that adds the fades for you). Game changer that will make editing faster. THANK YOU, Justin. As always, your vids have so much value. 💯🥇
You're welcome - so glad you've found value in our content! 😊
Thank you in the process of starting my CZcams channel and you have the best steps to explaining how to use the program
No problem, so glad it helped 👍 - Hazel, PV Team
I have learned how to create new libraries, naming them properly, for anything new I edit. I even have a library named “tests” for new microphones, other adjustments, and even things I learn where I practice. I can always refer back to this library for when I forget how to do something I have learned.
Been messing with iMovie, learning the basics. Ready to move on to the bigger, better program. FANTASTIC video once again. Thank you!!!
You're welcome - glad you liked it! 👍
Hello I just made this switch in the last few days to FCPX and I really love how you explain everything! I'm so grateful for you doing what you do. Thank you so much and keep up the good work!
You’re welcome - enjoy your edits! 😃
@Primalvideo Another thing I found in Final Cut Pro to help audio for the primary footage is using audio cross fades. If you cover this in another Final Cut Pro tutorial, I think this is a really good tip. Great video, since I’m eventually planning on using LumaFusion and Final Cut Pro together.
I'm not a tech person but his is probably the "easiest" video editing tutorial I've ever come across on CZcams.
Some begginers tutorials are too complicated for me to follow because I thought my brain capacity has been maxed out for medicine alone. 😂
Glad I didn't waste my precious 24 minutes for nothing. Thank you so much!
That's great to hear, all the best with your edits 👍 - Hazel, PV Team
Thanks for an amazing, efficient, walkthrough. It was really helpful to get started. If you were to do another, It would be cool to see to an actual cohesive video done start to finish. But, this was far better than I could have asked for.
You're welcome - glad you enjoyed it! 😊 - Hazel, PV Team
Thank you so much for your help! I'm a new CZcamsr and I have been trying to find new ways to edit my videos. Make them look more professional, you know? Have your viewers interested and wanting to watch more!! God Bless!!
You're welcome - good luck with your edits! 👍
@@PrimalVideo Hi sir! I just finished editing my video for tonight. It looks awesome!!! Thank you 😊 !!! Keep doing what you're doing!!! Your helping a lot of beginners like me
I really appreciate your attention to detail and thorough explanations. Without your help, my entry into FCPX would not have been nearly as seamless as it’s been. Thank you so much!
You're welcome - so awesome to hear it! - Hazel, PV Team
I really wish you were my Professor... Crystal clear. I didn't miss any dot. Thanks...
Much appreciated 😊
This is just so amazingly good. Thank you so much for this. The ability to teach something in such a comprehensive way shows not only the command of the subject matter, but a special gift in the ability to teach!
So awesome to hear it, cheers - Hazel, PV Team
I literally used this video as a step by step to get started. Thank you! Lifesaver
That's awesome! You're welcome! 😃
Justin my man! This tutorial was soooo good! II really struggle with FCPX and you really opened my eyes to some basic settings. Thanks my man!
You're welcome - so glad you've found value in our content! 😊
One of the best tutorials I have seen and this gets you from zero to editing basics so fast. Thanks!!
Great, you're welcome! 😃 - Hazel, PV Team
I've been using Final Cut Pro for about year (but only less than 10 videos in that time). A few days ago, I edited and uploaded my first video this year (which was probably the first video I've worked on the last six months) and my process certainly wasn't the most efficient. When you mentioned copying and pasting attributes, I went, "oh yeah! I forgot all about that!" I learnt at least a couple more things that will be useful in future. Thanks for sharing this video.
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for your awesome presentation! I just purchased FCPX a few days ago and your video has touched upon so many features, so quickly. I especially love the SUBJECT line at the very bottom so I can go back to a certain part of the video to review.
I will play this back on my iPad while I’m running FCPX on my MacBook Pro.
You're welcome - good luck with your edits! 👍
After learning editing on Lumafusion moving to FCP is incredibly frustrating, after more than 40 hours trying to figure out how to do simple things like adding videos to projects or trying to understand why do I need events and projects being an old school gamer I broke 3 mouses. I bought this thing about 4 years ago, gave it a try got super disappointed (on myself) turned it off and never touched it again. After some time I found out about LumaFusion and decide to learn the ropes there. The learning curve was more like a learning slide because things were very easy to pick up, everything makes sense and is intuitive. Great? Nope, even though FCP has way, way more options and possibilities I can’t learn how to use it. I tried to edit the same small video on each one and in lumafusion after 45 minutes it was done, on FCP after 10 hours I gave up not even close to one quarter of the editing. $300 dollars burned to ashes, sorry about my complaining… so frustrating 😢
Always so helpful Justin, thank you for doing these for us.
You’re welcome!
As usual, excellent information, Justin! Thanks for adding up all the options available in the FCP..cheers😎
You're welcome - glad you enjoyed it 😊
This video really has help me a lot. Now I feel confident on continuing on editing videos. Thank you so much

You're welcome - glad you found it here! 😃
Thank you...thank you! Iv'e used iMovie for years but just got Final Cut with my new iMac. This helped be primarily in locating things like Transitions and durations. Also the keyboard shortcuts like C and R. Great help!
No problem, all the best with your edits 👍 - Hazel, PV Team

Hi I just wanted to say thank you so much!!! This was so helpful because I only been using Luma Fusion on my iPad and I just got a MacBook and downloaded final cut pro to use for my channel and definitely felt scared and didn't know what to do especially being so used to Luma Fusion functions so your video was perfect and so easy to learn because I have seen other tutorials and they were fine but since I am new I just want to know the basics and yours was perfect so thank you again for making this video!
You're welcome - so glad you've found value in our content!
This was extremely helpful! I’ve been having a difficult time finding help using the program. I’m working on a podcast now and can do my own editing.
So glad you found it helpful 🙏
Thank you for putting this together. I just came over from premiere pro and decided to give final cut a shot after exporting issues on the M1 mac. brutal.

JB! I needed this! I've been doing it all wrong for YEARS. I was editing in iMovie first and then sending it to Final Cut Pro. Now I won't have to double work! My number one Final Cut Pro Tip? *Watch THIS Video Tutorial!* Thanks Justin!

Definitely my software! The big and better brother of iMovie. Thank you Justin.
You're welcome, cheers!
@@PrimalVideo I watched the whole video, downloaded the trial version of the software, edited my first video last night, amazing quality, very handy and useful software, much easier than Adobe Premiere Pro, in my opinion only, which makes work faster. Very very nice one. Do you know any place where I can download templates/graphics for Final Cut Pro X? I remember you said it once or twice in some of tour videos, but I cannot remember which were they to check again?
This was absolutely fantastic. Thank you so much, Justin.
Glad you enjoyed it, you're welcome 😊 - Hazel, PV Team

I just wanted to say thanks Justin. I have been a photographer forever and always wanted do video, especially with drones these days. I played with a few editors and made myself crazy. You made this so clear that I have decided to actually buy FXP as I want things simple and I can build from there. You laid out this very nicely Thanks again
So glad we're able to help with your decision making 😊 - Hazel, PV Team
You are worthy of so many likes for this video. I've watched countess others and they don't take the time, detail or show the specifics that a beginner actually needs .

Hi Justin, thank you for another excellent tutorial.
I'm having trouble figuring out how to perform the Ripple Edit Right ( Option [ ) OR Ripple Edit Left ( Option] ) on my Mac. Could you please guide me on how to access the square brackets shortcut? (Option + Option + 5 doesn't seem to work...)
Additionally, I've noticed that there is always a gap between clips when I use the Blade tool. Is this a common issue or am I missing something?
I recently switched from Premiere to Final Cut because I couldn't bear the payment model of Adobe any longer. This is my first time using Final Cut, so I appreciate your assistance in navigating the software.
Thank you for your time and keep up the great work!
Learnt so much even though I've been using this for over a year. Cheers.
Awesome, cheers!

@@PrimalVideo Any advice for isolating some sound effects over others? I have a video that I'm working on with some asmr type paper cutting noises, but there's some breathing sounds, phone ring, distant talking that like to remove.
Thank you! Very helpful
You're welcome - glad we're able to help 🙏
Good overview. Thanks!
You're welcome, Gary - Hazel, PV Team
Great video Justin ! Much appreciated .. BOOM!
Thanks, cheers 😊 - Hazel. PV Team
Looking forward to walking through this. I have had FCPX for many years and managed to stumble through it creating audition tapes (I'm an actor), but found a lot of it baffling and the symbols counterintuitive. BTW is it possible to edit MP3 audio files on this? I'm not technically savvy, and about to start creating audio files, podcasts, etc. Trying to create decent quality while keeping the system as simple as possible.
Really useful video and very helpful!! Thank you
So glad you find it useful 😃 - Hazel, PV Team
Been using it but am now here to add knowledge 🙌🏽
Cool 😎 - Hazel, PV Team
