John Ritter introduces Lucy who presents the Governor's Award to Skelton. September 21, 1986. Lucy's last show "Life with Lucy" had premiered the night before on ABC.
I met Red Skelton in the 1970's. He was exactly the humble, soft speaking and reverent person you see here saying, "Good night and God bless". He did exactly what he said, he said something small and special to me that has stayed with me for 50 years and counting. Thank you, Red. Thank you, Lucy.
Beautiful Lucille Ball gave a classy introduction to one of my favorite comedians of my childhood. My whole family waited all week for the Red Skelton Show. Gertrude and Hecliff, I miss you.
Lucy was a remarkable woman, a legendary talent, and a powerhouse in the Television industry. She definitely earns and commands the respect of all who enjoyed her work through out all years.
While so many below want to talk about Lucy, let me just say that Red Skelton was the best. This video was about Red, and he more than deserved this award, for all the years of joy and laughter, he gave to the world. Rest In Peace Red. You were one of a kind.
Weren't we fortunate to have a man with full of grace ,dignity 😅plus a genuine heart. Red Skelton was that and more. Lucille Ball was as genuine as they came. God bless them both ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Lucille Ball is a legend forever!!! I Love Lucy! This woman deserves all of the honors and tributes because they'll never be another person as Talented as Ms. Lucille Ball
Yep...Red Skelton did not care for an off color joke and never told one. I miss those beautiful people who loved life and seemed to hate no one. They respected the office of the president and never berated our country or disrespected our national heritages. It's like Dolly Parton said once, "If you wanna make it in this business you need to keep your damned mouth shut about politics". She was sure right about that. I say "Carol Burnett" and even the kids know who I'm talking about. I say "Kathy Griffin" and they go "who?", or they say, "ain't that the psycho that cut Trump's head off?" But they can't think of one funny thing she ever did or said. In fact when she quit show business I think her and a couple of her remaining friends were the only ones who knew she quit....lol
Lucy carried herself so well. Straight back, head held high, just like the Queen of Comedy she will always be. Red Skelton was the epitome of kindness and humility. He so deserved this award (and many others). Thank you both for the laughter and the tears. 💖💖
Red Skelton was such a genuinely kind man with a pure soul. When he won an Emmy award in the early 1950s over Lucy, he stepped up to the podium to accept the award and humbly stated, "Ladies and Gentlemen, you gave this award to the wrong redhead." Such class and humility. Lucy never forgot it. "Good night and may God bless".

my god. just observe how she reads from that auto-cue. how she deliberately speeds up and lulls her words to make up for the beats in the rolling transcript and her seamless diction as she cruises through the script. Ms. Ball is, quite simply, a master class in delivery, timing and performing.
Im such a weirdo lol I get chill bumps at 0:55!! She's so regal and rightfully the Queen of Comediennes in this clip. imagine having all of those super talented colleagues acknowledge a person like that- no one can be that wacky wonderful Lucy but Lucille Ball :D
Wow. Now this is an awards presentation. Lucy presenting to Red. Superb, articulate delivery by Ball, beautifully edited tribute, perfectly scored, directed and produced. Class all the way around, and a million miles from Adele Dazee.
Red Skelton (along with Buster Keaton) helped to train Lucy in her comedic talents in the 1940s when she was dropped by MGM because they didn't know what to do with her. They taught her physical comedy and the importance of timing....her and Red Skelton were lifetime friends. I miss them both!
Red never told a dirty joke in his whole career; of course never on tv, but also never in his nightclub performances. He said that dirty jokes are the creation of a lazy mind, and that It takes much more ability and effort to create clean, wholesome humor.
Got pictures of Red holding his Emmy that night at the Pasadena civic...very nice man too...good night and god bless...thats what he told me when I thanked him for stopping for afew photos...
You're so right, every time I see clips from her later appearances where she receives a standing ovation she always looks genuinely surprised and pleased and grateful.
Add, you're so right. Even as a devout atheist, I can appreciate the genuine warmth and goodwill behind that farewell saying. We've lost that sense of unity, and of caring for each other, focusing on our similarities. Now all that people seem to focus on is our differences, and look where THAT's gotten us...
Red was truly a wonderful man, from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. A clown extraordinaire, with a loving, caring heart. RIP Red, and may God Bless. Enjoyed having you in our homes.
Back when Hollywood had style, grace, & class. Red Skelton was a TRUE comedian. He NEVER resorted to foul language, or indecent actions. Skelton, I grew up watching your TV show and I will say, You are missed.
My grandmother came to America when she was 18 years old in 1922 to marry my grandfather, and was widowed after 24 years of marriage. Her hair turned gray within that year. She never remarried, even though she was asked by 2 men. She loved to watch Red Skelton. He made her laugh, which was such a treat for me to see her enjoying herself. She learned to speak enough English to communicate, whether she understood everything he said, I don't know. Looking back, I am grateful that his comedy reached beyond words to make her laugh. She also loved Danny Kaye. We would watch these shows together, and I miss all of it. Comedy will never be like this again. They were class acts.
More like the WB, than Ball. If anything, the studio, in the eyes of broadway critics, didn't learn from the financial and critical wrecking Hello Dolly got for having Barbra Streisand over Carol Channing from when Mame was being developed for film. Though many could say Mame was the Godzilla '98 worse of 1974: critics tore it apart but it was financially successful.
For those of you who miss Red Skelton and for those of you who missed Red Skelton, look up some of his old shows on CZcams and enjoy real comedy from back in the day when humor wasn't about making other people feel small. We sure could use some of those Tuesday nights these days.
I thought it was classy of Lucille Ball for interrupting John Ritter at the beginning. It seems that Ritter was going to give Ball a long glowing introduction, but she knew enough that the award presentation was for Red and that she did not want to upstage him.
+news2morrow All the introductions at these awards shows are scripted. I'm 99.99% sure that John Ritter was told to come on stage with an oversized prop scrapbook to make it look like he was going to give Lucy a long intro--and Lucy "interrupted" him to get to her intro for Red Skelton..
Not true, actually. John Ritter was going to give her a glowing, lasting tribute, and she decided to cut it short, by walking on to the stage before he had a chance to really get into the meat of the introduction. Lucy felt that the award being presented to Red Skelton, and she did not want to upstage him.
+ John Dalton - No, YOU are wrong. John Ritter was, obviously, NOT going to read the whole biography, for goodness sake. It was a prop. Ritter did, however, have more to read on the script pages contained within the huge book, but the show was running long, and Lucy was aware of this, so she "cut him short", even at the expense of accolades towards her. No one was more aware of the "behind the scenes" actions besides Lucy, who not only was the greatest comedian of all-time "on camera", but also a studio owner who knew the ins and outs of the "behind the camera" action and time frame that they had to do their scenes.
Respectfully it was staged and Ms. Ball would rather have accepted the applause, don't you think? Rest In Peace to Red Skelton, to Lucille Ball and John Ritter.
One, out of the many things that he has done, is when he portrayed a principal, and telling the children what the Pledge of Allegiance stood for, each word had/has a meaning. I watch that every now, and then. I wonder if it would have any effect on the children nowadays.
I just saw that today which has led to my 'going back' and re-discovering Red. I would like to think it COULD have an impact on some kids but most would not have the attention span I fear. It made my eyes well up.
AND "Life with Lucy" had just premiered the night before OPPOSITE "Murder She Wrote". I don't know if they had overnight ratings but LWL won the time slot, the only good rating the series had. The Emmys were Sunday night so Lucy had no yet read the scathing, and rather cruel, reviews of her new series.

Standing to Angela's right is her late husband, Peter Shaw. While Angela wears a saintly expression, note that husband Peter is frowning and not applauding Ball. Angela was always gracious at public events. I read, somewhere, that the Lansbury and Ball had been at odds in the early 1960's. One wonders if Ball's usurping of "Mame", a decade later, was a kind of professional "payback". At any rate, having seen Miss Lansbury on stage three times, I can tell you that she has more talent in her little finger than Lucille Ball had in her entire body.
