Behind the Curtain with Walter M. Mayes

Walter M. Mayes is wearing two hats at South Bay Musical Theatre. He is the company's Artistic Director while doubling as Director for our upcoming production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC-a show with which he has had "a life-long love affair." In this 20-minute interview, Walter talks about the circumstances that led to this show being selected, then postponed due to COVID, and finally reinstated in our current season. He lauds the fantastic cast and staff who are creating the show, and gives the kind of in-depth background that you might enjoy at a traditional audience talkback session, explaining how the show differed dramatically from the Golden Age musicals that preceded it. This interview was recorded three weeks before opening night, and even at that date, Walter says that of all the countless shows on which he has worked at SBMT, this is the one that takes the prize for his proudest achievement.
