It's comforting to hear someone as experienced as yourself still gets frustrated and stuck on dumb things. I'm building a cat patio and had to walk away the other day because it was taking me way longer than I thought, having to deal with little problems and mistakes, getting stressed over something that's supposed to be fun and relaxing. You'd expect these projects to be super easy because cats are light-weight and don't care how it looks, but I think that expectation can become a burden if you underestimate the inherent challenges. Keep the cat projects coming!
We had exactly the same eerie red glow during our last summer in Australia. Hope you get some rain soon.
Wow Peter . You guys had all the fires last summer ehhh?
@@BearMeat4Dinner We cerainly did. Not so much here in Sydney, but other parts of the state were devestated. All good now, but the hot weather is just about to start again.
Thank God you are good.
Thank you for everything you did to entertain and help us.
I live in the East Bay and the sky just threw me off this morning. I thought my alarm had gone off an hour early! It felt unreal all day--it was like we were in a perpetual dusk. I had to drive to the store and all the night security lights were on at all the buildings I passed. Apparently, it felt like dusk to all the sensors, too.
Something I learned from doing my cat wall is that they (my cats at least) don't like to turn around while climbing up something. It took mine a longer than expected time to figure out the best way up, so if it's not too late I recommend trying to get a single fluid direction from the floor up more like a spiral, rather than a zig zag. I'm sure they'll still use it either way but they're certainly a bit clunkier on it, especially from a place where they can get more a running start (unlike the nook in the wall on the other side of your walk).
Love all the content you've been putting out!
Praying for the safety of you and your family and everyone affected by the fires!
Wood working on the fly, I love it! For me it's always another trip to the hardware store ... another trip to the hardware store ... another trip to the hardware store ... another
Glad to see you’re still safe and your home and stop isn’t getting threatened by the fire.
Cardboard template! Genius! 🐈

Great Update ! Stay Safe Steve And Thoughts And Prayers For All In California
Oh I sure hope your cats appreciate all the hard work you're doing for them!
I like how each cat has their own theme music. Stay Safe
Great, you lacquered the sun and now the whole world is sepia! Thanks, Steve Ramsey 😷😜🤙
I just came inside from the garage/shop... I was out there for about 2 hours, and I was soaking wet from head to toe... And it's only about 90F outside... but oooh so much hotter in the shop!... But I'm in New Orleans, so... we get about 4 days of cold weather each year... then summer for the rest...
I see you are into CAD. Cardboard Aided Designing.
🤣
Oh man! I've got to remember that one. 👍😀
The design process is one of the most time consuming, frustrating and satisfying parts of a project. It’s nice to see someone’s frustration during that process.
I imagine this wasn't your favourite video to shoot, given the frustration, but I actually really enjoyed it! It was interesting to watch your process when plans and dimensions weren't enough, and see you work through the problems one cut at a time. I imagine a lot of things hit the cutting-room floor, and I'm obviously not going to build exactly the same cat tree, but the process of making decisions and figuring things out is valuable to see.
You have many videos of a plan being executed, and I really like the vagueness of the plans being planned.
I have to agree with you about knowing when to take a break from a project. Not only do not enjoy yourself, but you get aggravated and make hasty decisions that create even more problems for you in the future.
For the circles around the trunk try making 4 halves of a circle and use pocket holes in the middle that screw into the trunk for the top 2 halves then turn the lower 2 halves 90 degrees so they act as a brace for the upper 2 semi circles making a circle sandwhich. (Add glue if feeling fancy)
Exactly what I was thinking :)
Initially I saw your day by day videos as an effort to help your community as we all wrestle with a pandemic. But I’m now understanding that this is as much something to help you get through some really really messed up stuff all piled up high. Either way you make great material so thanks.
Stay safe and keep smiling.
Thanks For continuing to post amid all the craziness - we appreciate you!
I love the things you do for your cats! That´s love :-)
Oh dang! I've lived in the west my whole life, NV, UT, ID. So I've always had smoke and wildfire season. But I've only ever had it get that dark ONCE because of the smoke. That sucks, I'm sorry. Stay safe and healthy Steve!
That kind of atmosphere carries a long way. We had sickly, yellow skies in New Zealand during the Australian wildfires this year - and we’re about as far from Sydney as Houston is from Los Angeles.
Totally understand what you are saying about the eerie feeling as we have just been through that. We have had three disasters this year so not a good one for Australia. Fires, Floods and COVID is enough.
When mounting shelves around a complex brace/support system, you might consider the occasional pocket screw on the underside (or out-of-vision side). The connection to a wall (always at a stud) can use a long PS, and that joint makes excellent shear support, but you do need something (eg, tree branch) at the opposite edge for torsion support. Together (wall and branch) you get the appearance of "floating" shelf.
Today in Fortuna, CA .... We had the same dreary dark "Mars" sky as well. I had to have the lights on all day inside in order to see. I have a small garage/storage shed and with the garage door fully open to the midday light I still needed to turn the light on to find something in the back of the garage.
Yeah, I live in Missouri, and while it hasn’t been super hot, humidity adds to it, so it’s been hard to get outside to work on projects.
Stay safe!!! My parents and many of my good friends are in the Pasadena are in SoCal, so they’re not in any immediate danger, but it’s been crazy!!!
Thanks Steve. You've given me an idea for a one of a kind book case. Stay safe.
If you’re concerned with the seam between the plywood and the wood use some rope as some trim to hide any gaps
It looks like you have the prefect post (or pre) apocalyptic woodworking scenery without post production! (I live in FL and yes, it totally sucks to woodwork anytime beyond 10:00 am) I appreciate your continued dedication to your craft :)
Hope you all keep safe. 👍👍
Steve what you call an organic approach, around here we call it winging it, lol
Good to know you’re all safe and well. We were covered in smoke haze here last summer, eerie is exactly the right word. When it finally did rain here , it was filthy rain from the ash in the air. Keep safe. Thinking of you all. Cheers,🙏🏽
It was as creepy here in Santa Cruz today. Thanks for the cat play area update. I built a catio off of my deck a few years ago. That way my cats got to roll around in the grass whenever they wished, but the coyotes couldn’t eat them. Your twosome look like a fun pair.
I'm usually jealous of people who live in the mountains of CA. Now, I'm perfectly happy living in the Hudson Valley of NY. The virus is almost gone, things are reopening, the weather is not too hot, we don't have fires, earthquakes, or mudslides, and the real estate isn't as crazy as that in CA. Around January, I will again wish I was in CA.
We have had that happen a few times here in Albuquerque, NM. It wasn't quite that bad the other night, but it was a bit of that eerie glow with a bright red sun. Several years back there was a wildfire in AZ that the smoke drifted here making it look just like that last shot in your video. It smelled really heavily of smoke. I haven't smelled it as much lately, but this is definitely a crazy year.
I absolutely agree with you: if there’s one lesson I’ve learned in my relatively short history of woodworking (and there is definitely more than one) it’s knowing when to walk away. On another note, when we had our big fires down here in Ventura Co. a couple years ago, you could smell the burning as well as having smoke like yours. I described it as being like we were camping on Mars. Stay safe and wear you N99 mask!
Here in Oregon, we are living on Mars too, crazy
Crazy, I've got family in Oregon city and Beaverton
As a Texan it’s been pretty tough to get the workshop projects done! It’s 90F in the garage by 10am with it hitting 105+ in the afternoon! Started to get cold fronts and looks to be a merciful 90F this weekend at least!
I love that the cats each get their own theme song, or if you want to get extra fancy, their own leitmotif.
When you get your shop straightened up, I find if I'm still frustrated, I take a nap.
I'm in southern california and we felt it as well. It's been hard getting time in the garage
LOVED THE 2 DIFFERENT MUSIC' FOR COBRA AND BUBBLES
The smoke has been insane! I live in Placer County and yesterday evening I was outside ripping boards and couldn't even breathe. It was so smoky it was dark around 4PM. Stay safe and I enjoy your content.
Auckland looked the same during the fires in AU. It is freaky and there are no words to describe. Great to see you are ok
I mean this in the nicest way possible as both a long-time fan and a cat owner: Steve, you are a huge dork :P I love these videos, please don't stop, and also please stay safe with these insane fires.
We are getting red, red, red sunsets here in Phoenix too.
Between the California wildfires and several in my neck of the...
country.
Stay safe!
Love the Cobra and Bubbles leitmotifs that you sprinkle throughout your productions.
I also appreciate your assessment of 2020. Oh my! Hope all continues to go well for you and yours.
Best thing that came out of COVID? lockdown videos!
Excellent job... And hard... You REALLY love your cats :-)
Stay safe love your videos always look forward to seeing them
G'day mate enjoy all your videos hope you and your family are are all staying safe
Drill holes through the tree branch for wooden dowels? A little glue on the dowels in the hole should support the shelf
If you kept some of the branches you cut off, you may be able to use them for support for the circle. It would keep the natural look of the tree.
I really like this kind of video format. It reminds me of the early videos that you have posted on youtube >10 years ago. Very entertaining and relaxed... :)
Take up making shine! Perfect weather🍺
"Purple haze, all around, don't know if I'm goin' up or down." Jimi Hendrix
What if you re-joined the circles with biscuits? I know how you love biscuit joinery
Stay safe my friend, I'm from Cali but I now live in Arizona
I'm sure the smell bothers the cats, even if you don't smell it. And the light is probably affecting them, too. If your workshop air cleaner is easily movable, you might consider moving it into the house and leaving it run. You stay safe, Steve. Best wishes.
The sky was similar down in San Diego the day after my friend graduated from basic training back in 2007. The sky was orange, the sun was red, and ashes were falling from the sky. Very post-apocalyptic.
Hi Steve we went through this smoke haze in Australia last summer real unpleasant time. Keep on keeping on mate
Down here in San Mateo there weren't no ball O' sun all day. And it got darker towards noon.
Stay safe, Steve!
Hope you stay safe there steve
The sunrise in Dixon was crazy, all red
Doesn't quite capture how *dark* it was this morning.
*8:28 Ah, there we go.
12800 ISO will do that. The interior lights looked like searchlights so that puts it in perspective.
Your cats have it made! Stay safe out there...what a horrifying situation you have in CA!
Glad you are OK.
6:21 Steve is actually capable of making a mess!!!!
What about just cleats that screw into the shelf and into the tree to give it support?
Really appreciate your videos and advice, keep it going!
Wish you all the best, Steve! Stay safe!
thanks for the metric conversion
I'm in the SF Bay area and the sky has been orange all day. Ash all over everything and it's kind of cold.
When the smoke clears you will have to change your furnace filters.
Heard how bad the fires are in SF. Hope you’re OK. I’m in Australia and live in a bush fire prone area so fully understand the difficulties. Cheers from down under Mike V
I need.....no, we all deserve ....a shirt that says “ I survived 2020” come 1/1/2021.
2020 is fast becoming a description, as in "How are you?", "I'm totally 2020'd"
Thank you for making the videos! Any time there is a new video from you, I click it immediately.
me, too.
Good luck with the whole ordeal over there Steve! Seems really tiring to deal with.
Yeah we been seeing that in Vegas too.
This isn't the first time we've seen this in the bay area. When Mt. St. Helens erupted we had ash and red skies for a while.
8:335 reminds me of the coloring of our family photos from the mid to late 70s. We’ve had summers like that with smoke from fires in Russia or other parts of Alaska. It’s not fun. Sorry you’re having to deal with it.
@steveramsey do you remember when the lockdown was supposed to last two weeks? Good times, man, good times. Stay safe
2020 is just ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!!!!!! never fort id still be saying this 7 months on but stay safe out there !!
It was 110 in the shop today I lasted about an hour to change my planer blades and I was done. Went and had ice cream to cool off
You & your family be safe.
Very weird and dark in No. California this morning. Did feel like we lived on another planet. Thanks for sharing your catification! Stay safe.
Wow, 46 degrees. I will die up there!!! Best of luck.
That Cat Tree is going to look great!! Wow, that looks so freaky outside there! Be careful breathing that air. Peace and Good Fortune and Good Health to you and your family.
I can see you trimming that tree down and down and down, until eventually it is just a low stump with a platform on it "There... that's, just, fine"
I'm glad to know you're okay. I'm sure I haven't been the only one checking daily for a post for that reason. Your kitty climber is coming along quite nicely. Ponder and perform, and it will be done soon. Unless you keep adding to it like Winchester House. Haha! Thanks for all you do.
My co worker moved to Vegas and he emailed us a picture of the sun from yesterday and it looked exactly the same.
OMG! Your grey is showing! And you haven't shaved! That must be killing yourself image! Seriously, the cats are going to have a blast with all of that. What's sad is that they have no idea what a labor of love it is. Looking forward to more.
Exactly the same weird red glow here in New Zealand last summer, from fires in Australia.
Yeah here in alameda today (9/9/2020) at noon it was as bright as when sunrise is starting normally...at least the smoke is high vs ground level. yay for marine layer
Red/grey skies and crazy suns was our life for about 3-4 months over the last summer on east coast NSW (Australia). Non-stop fires and shocking air quality. Days when the smoke was so thick it was like a fog. Hideous.
Steve! I wasn't sure if you checked your Instagram messages very often, so I thought I would try here - I just wanted to say thank you very much for recommending "Host" (the Zoom meeting horror movie) in one of your Instagram stories a while back. Wife and I just watched it tonight and I was very pleasantly surprised. Definitely didn't look like a movie I would like from the description alone, but we trusted your recommendation and are really glad we gave it a shot! Thanks again and keep those fun horror movie recommendations coming! 😁💀
