As a small child even before kindergarten, this voice was beautifully haunting , sad, mysterious and deathly. Something about hearing Jim Morrison singing reminded me of a young man embracing a tragic end. As a kid, I thought this was an older black man singing. I was only about 4-6 years old and when I saw from footage of his picture and image on tv that he was white; blew me away and left me speechless. I knew he would not be on this earth long. I did not understand it then but I knew. My father was in the entertainment business briefly in the 70's and it was he who confirmed to us, exactly how Jim Morrison died. I will always feel a connection to this artist and his fans. RIP Jim Morrison

I have always loved this rendition - screaming "Fire," the looks on the other three guys' faces - especially Krieger and Manzarek smirking after they knew Jim said "higher." As many many know, the executives wanted them to cut out the word "higher" and replace it with "better -" but even though the band agreed, Jim threw it in their face. When they were told they'd never play Sullivan, their reply was, "Hey man, we just DID Sullivan." Classic.

Organ playing is amazing. Singing is great, drumming is on the spot and the guitar is also fantastic. The Doors knew what they wanted out of music and did it brilliantly.
They got in a TON of trouble by Ed Sullivan when he sang the word higher (as in the drug refrence). In fact Ed Sullivan said before they went on he thought people would be upset if he said high on live television and they had to substitute it with a different word. Jim Morrison agreed. He than proceeded to go on and sang it the way it was written. They got in trouble and were banned from ever performing on Ed Sullivan again. But it did't matter. By than it was too late. The Doors had already gotten famous in the U.S. It was very bold (in a good way) of him to sing the song how it was written, and even though I don't condone doing drugs that was the way the song was written and he refused to let censorship ruin his art.
What's funny is that they were told they'd never do Ed Sullivan ever again (he was a huge show for aspiring musicians). Jim replied "we already did Ed Sullivan" Haha i'm glad the doors didn't cave to that PC bullshit over the word fucking 'higher' which can mean many things including an opposition to lower. You can see Mick's face turn red on the show. 'Let's spend some time together'. How do you ever get over that? Clearly you bury it and never think about it again. Because if you do think about it again, you will come up against a chap called Jim.
Reading thru the earlier posts.... At the end of the day it's not about how 'popular' a band were, it's how important and affecting they were.... The Doors were far more important than Mick and the money machine and had a far reaching affect on music that the stones and their Chuck Berry riffs could ever hope to convey.
Hard to believe this guy was 10 days older than Keith Richards, and yet he was even far more rebellious and controversial than the Stones. So far ahead of his time.
That striking stature Jim does at around 2:03 is his way of saying I got you locked now like a deer in headlights that can’t look away. What a amazing performance. I’m only 32 and can remember this song from since I was a kid even. Sometimes you gotta revisit it time after time to see how epic it really is. The world could never make music like this ever again.
Imagine the kind of arrogance it would take to tell an internationally famous artist to change the lyric of an internationally famous song!!!!Unbelievable gall! Oh Picasso, can you please just paint some clothes on Les Demoiselles before we bring it in the show.Sullivans show was a such an oppressive, controlling moronic group, who had no idea what they were doing. They censored several great artist and performers work, ruining it.

I understand your point, that it could be said that anything subject to the mainstream is Pop, but in this case it is wrong to call Morrison a pop singer, because there is already a musical genre called that, and although The Doors did some songs where they were closer to that genre, they are far from being a pop band, rock, blues, psychedelic rock would be more appropriate, but whatever.
I wonder why you can't still say FUCK or I SWEAR like lmo American TV is so primitive still I mean lmao those are everyday words you her and say everywhere nothing new

Story: he lived in a caravan prior to The Doors. Inside was floor to roof, wall to wall books. The classics ,the obscure, philosophy, poetry, etc. You could pick any page from any book in that caravan and Jim could recite word for word what was on that page. Deeply well read and knowledgeable. His pet hate was when people answered with a " i dont know".
morrison looks like he was working out in this period. very healthy looking... he put on about 10lbs or so from 6 months earlier when this was recorded in late '66. I doubt he actually was lifting weights, but he was living well by this point. he came from military lineage & was natually built like a swimmer or safety. wiry strong. this was before the booze, coke & trial depression turned him into paste. he was basking in success by this point, living very well. for the next year thru the spring of '69, the doors dominated american rock. jagger would never admit it, but he was scared by morrison presence and power on stage. he should be glad jim was inconsistent, b/c when he was focused like here, there was no more dangerous and dominant lead in rock then the lizard king.
You can see Robby Krieger smile when Jim said, “girl we couldn’t get much higher”

what a band what a singer what a performance...truly amazing.
I love it at the end as the crescendo builds and Ray shouts "Come on "!
Magnificent Masterpiece from Master Musicians, a favorite since 1967, top of the line solid gold standard of excellence
If this isn't your favourite band you're not drunk enough
incredible one of my favs but im still clean!!
I'm 9
Amerjit Sidhu fuck you little kid
@@amerjit54 why are you 9 and listening to the doors.
S M IM DEAD
This band is on fire.
Hard to believe this guy was 10 days older than Keith Richards, and yet he was even far more rebellious and controversial than the Stones. So far ahead of his time.
Its even more surprising than Richards today is so much alive at near 79 while Morrison couldn't crack 28
I get the chills when he screams light my...FIRE! One of the greats
Simply divine...Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, The Doors- absolute gods of music.
1:03
HOLY SHIT JIM!!😂😂
That's louder than any death metal scream ever
Not even Scott Stapp was able to get Jim' screaming voice in his covers.
Wasn’t expecting that to happen.
Fuckin insane for 1967 and especially the ed sullivan show
But I do look like Jim Morrison
@@acnhtunemusicvids your not the real Jim
That striking stature Jim does at around 2:03 is his way of saying I got you locked now like a deer in headlights that can’t look away. What a amazing performance. I’m only 32 and can remember this song from since I was a kid even. Sometimes you gotta revisit it time after time to see how epic it really is. The world could never make music like this ever again.
0:53 Robbie Krieger thinking about the Ed Sullivan crew totally freaking out backstage. LOL! :D
0:25 seconds after Jim said higher, Robbie is probably thinking "Holy shit he said it :D"
Heh, heh! Absolutely!
Well, he wrote that song...
If only the industry was worried about the shit on tv now days, maybe we wouldn't be living in such a lame generation.
Jim does not simply say BETTER instead of HIGHER
he would never have changed the lyric anyway good thing!
I suppose it WAS ON PURPOSE.
The Doors discussed about changing the lyrics before their performance. And Jim was pissed off to do it...
Marulete Jones that's classic Jim for ya
how stupid, it doesnt even rhyme..nor make sense
How about "come on baby bite my wire."
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Another one on my list of songs that captures the vibe of that era dead-on.
One of the best live performances ever. Could only imagine what it was like to see this for the 1st time in the 60s
That feeling never gets old...
56 years ago and still looks fresh.
IMO, one the most electrifying performances by a pop lead singer, ever
Pop? It WAS rock n roll, u know
@@deanvo503 If it's made en masse, it's pop 🤷🏻♂️
I understand your point, that it could be said that anything subject to the mainstream is Pop, but in this case it is wrong to call Morrison a pop singer, because there is already a musical genre called that, and although The Doors did some songs where they were closer to that genre, they are far from being a pop band, rock, blues, psychedelic rock would be more appropriate, but whatever.
@@deanvo503 Lol come on. Let's be realistic here. We're fans, but let's not be foolish.
@Sullen Morbius oh well, I was just correcting your inaccuracy in your comment, no big deal. Ciao.
The most beautiful man and one of the most incredible and electric performances I’ve ever seen ❤️❤️❤️
Jim’s range is absolutely impeccable
Ho Ho l e b a n b l y
Strike a pose! Jim Morrison will forever live as one of the greatest rock and rollers of all time!
Playing the key board with one hand and bass guitar part with the other!!
I wonder what Ed Sullivan would say if he was still alive today and saw the cuss words that these days are so common on TV.
You still can't curse on primetime tv, at least not in the US
He would probably literally birth a cow and pay a little visit to jimmy boy
Truth, He is probably spinning in his Grave. Ugh
vegaslover777 he would set himself on fire
I wonder why you can't still say FUCK or I SWEAR like lmo American TV is so primitive still I mean lmao those are everyday words you her and say everywhere nothing new
To this day, still one of the greatest bands ever to grace us. Lyrically a true genius, manzarek just simply awesome at putting music to Morrisons lyrics
Robby Kreiger wrote the lyrics to Light My Fire.
Fifty~five years afterward, this timeless masterpiece recording and performance still light the audiophile and aesthetic world "on fire."
I love how he doesn’t miss a beat when he sings “higher” :)
One of the best live performances ever.
Had a crush on him as a child, I’m 65 and I still have it 😊
Ray tho, his keyboard work, when when you see him do you it, you can see how immersed he is and you can just feel it radiate..he’s surprisingly quite underrated
Jim Morrison was the sexiest and most charismatic performer to ever exist. He was an angel and a devil
Elvis too
I discovered this performance on 31.12.1982 and it change my life forever.
Wtf
How so?
We had tapes and other forms of recordings back then kids
This performance may have gotten them banned from Ed Sullivan for life but it helped to stamp them in my heart for life.
They were truly very talented..the lot of them. 👏🏽🤗

More like, "im so high or drunk i dont care".
It’s a shame that this video has only 2.2 million views. It should easily have over 100 million hits.Love the Doors❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️They live 4 EVER!!!!
It had over 20 Million views and someone on here did something. Ugh
Jim was only 23 here unbelievable
The feeling I get when I hear this song is a feeling I wish others could experience. I’m a a 15 year old who is obsessed with guy from the 60s, may the lizard king live on forever
Welcome to real rock and roll youngster!!!😁☮️♥️🎤🎸🎸🎶🎶

@G Spot Man i was born in 68..didn't know a thing about the doors..i DO remember hearing this song on the radio..as years went by..i begin studying morrison..im hooked!!
The sophistication in this song is just exponential.
I was a 90s kid, but my parents listened to oldies radio all the time. This is the song that turned me onto music. Been a huge Doors fan since I was 11.
My introduction to The Doors was in July 81 on Jim's tenth anniversary. The dj played them all.
Watched it again- doesn't get cooler than that. Great song and Jim owns it! Feels every emotion and makes you feel every one too.
The Doors❤❤
Back when you could get banned from a show for saying the word "higher."
And the older generation bashes us for being too sensitive? 😂
Mediocre Joker we are though...
While getting High on the scene
Lol, feels like society’s just as weak and sensitive today
Y'know shit slaps when your band mates are singing the words too
This is my favorite rock band of all times and I’m still in love with Jim (The Lizard King).
morrison looks like he was working out in this period. very healthy looking... he put on about 10lbs or so from 6 months earlier when this was recorded in late '66.
One of the best moments in rock history.
Jim Morrison e suas roupas de couro.. Que elegância e estilo
I have been in love with the way he plays that piano from the first time I heard it
