Unless they had behaved inappropriately or seriously underperformed then of course AVB's idea was a completely stupid one. The youth players have to aspire to be seated in first-class alongside the Premiership elite. Not the other way around.

Chelsea are a big club. Especially during billionaire Roman Abrahamovic's pre-FFP tenure.
Chelsea were not a lower league club on a shoestring budget.

If you listened to the full interview you'll hear the bit about John Terry mentioning that those on international duty were made to wear formal suits by Fabio Capello on a team-bus where the air-con was broken. The players all sat there uncomfortable, cramped-up and dehydrated.

The reason why Chelsea are failing now because Terry viewed himself as historic, that he was at the highest order. At Real Madrid, Terry's achievements would not make him top 20 football player in terms of legends.
