The Top 10 Bass Intros of All Time
Vložit
- čas přidán 12. 08. 2019
- So there are a heap of amazing bass intro’s, right?
But, have you ever tried to boil them all down to a top 10?
Well. I did.
And it was crazy hard.
But fear not… I think (hope) I’ve done the bass community proud with the new video I’ve just released…
And if you wanna do me a favour… make sure to let me know in the comments who you would have loved to see in there, and I’ll add them into my ‘part 2’ of the series.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Wolstenholme was one of the biggest motivators for me picking up the bass in the first place. I love Muse!
N.I.B. - Geezer Butler... even without the solo it's still a killer intro on the bass before the band joins in, & there's that lovely little transition between the solo & the song proper where you can hear Geezer turn up the volume on his bass to get the extra crunch for the riff.
Whilst we're at it, Geezer's bass intro on Master of Insanity (from Dehumanizer) is bloody brilliant. That album has an absolutely killer tone on the bass, too
Agreed
I came here just to say the same, N.I.B. has one of the best bass solos I've ever heard damn
Simply have to second that! Absolutely no doubt! Thank you!
NIB is the classic psych rock jam every band should learn! So much fun to play
czcams.com/video/Zxjz6VhUOr8/video.html
Speaking of Flea, his intro on “Higher Ground” introduced the world to RHCP, made me want to play bass.
‘Higher Ground’ is a cover of ‘Higher Ground’ by Stevie Wonder, how does almost no one know that
@@ryplay5430 Did anyone say it isn’t?
@@IanFarrington1 No, but many people who talk about ‘Higher Ground’ don’t acknowledge that it’s a cover of a Stevie Wonder song
Megadeth Peace Sells should have been mentioned. It was used as the intro to MTV news.
For whom the bell tolls shud be up there as well!
Shit, peace... Should be there between one of The best. If not The best.
Or For whim the bell tolls
That was good.
@@archipimeda487 I agree, For whom the bell tolls has one of the best intros
4:10 The Official Bassist Language. Only spoken by true Bass Players
Joel Matovu as a drummer, I think I caught most of this, but it’s what I imagine an Italian feels like listening to Spanish
Borabosal 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Good stuff!
Thats what Music teachers sound like when they want you to do a drum fill
as a bass player i can say truthfully that this is what we speak, the only reason why most bands only have one bass player is because the guitarists don’t want the bass players to talk behind their backs
To be Honest Scott, you should have done a top 100 I think there's a small riot happening in the comment sections
Haha true
😂👍
Mark Adams
Band: Slave
Song: Just a touch of love
ONE OF MANY OF HIS.
R.I.P.
GREAT bass player. SALUTE!!
Groove is in the Heart - Deelite. Love me some Bootsy "The One"!
"46 and 2" by Tool. The opening bassline is ICONIC......
Schism too...
The Pot if we don't count the voice, Weak and Powerless by A Perfect Circle, etc etc etc
Not really, it's just popular among Tool fans
Jasper Störningar i’m not a tool fan and i think 46 and 2 along with schism are fantastic intros
Even “Sober” has a pretty kickass bass intro.
"A Town Called Malice" - great Motown style bass line by Mr Bruce Foxton of The Jam 🙂
Yes and... Tube Station and Going Underground and more...
nobody weird like me is one of my favourite bass intros
Also one of the sickest songs ever. That second part breakdown is my life soundtrack
This. And get up and jump, or higher ground.
Brady Connor higher ground is also one of my favourites
YESSS
I really like the intro to "Lounge Act", by Nirvana.
Jaime Laverc couldnt agree more buddy
Blew has an amazing intro too!
I couldn’t agree more, dude
Rick Beato agrees
Theme to Barney Miller rocked my world
How many different versions of this are there? IDK, but it is well top drawer.
That's legendary line. They used to talk about it a lot in Bass Player magazine. However, since it's a theme song and not a mainstream song, I don't think it was considered eligible for this list.
For anyone interested: www.google.com/search?q=barney+miller+theme&rlz=1C5CHFA_enCA503CA504&oq=barney+millerm&aqs=chrome.3.69i57j0l5.6599j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
So Your Place Came With A Kitchen oh hell yes!!
That was Carol Kaye on bass.
Cygnus X-1 - RUSH
Ace Of Spades - Motorhead
Peace Sells - Megadeth
You're No Good - Van Halen
Wrathchild - Iron Maiden
Hand Of Doom, N.I.B. - Black Sabbath
Money - Pink Floyd
For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica
big money, if it counts, I'd pick for rush
Only Metal/rock intros ? Why
@@TDB97 they're the best
He did 'Money'
@@j_velazquez307 when you are 12 Years old ok
I’m kinda late to the party however I didn’t see a comment regarding this issue so I’m sorry if I’m repeating somebody BUT:
In 2003 Chris didn’t have his Status basses (those he first acquired during The Resistance era), he was still maining his Pedulla Raptures as he did during the Origin of Symmetry tour and Hullabaloo.
Flea played a Modulus on Californication for all tracks except Road Tripping where he used an acoustic bass
“I Wish” -Stevie Wonder should’ve been in there!
That was Nate Watts on there
Mico Olmos Sir Duke is a badass bassline.
@@IAgreeLetsGoBrandon but the gimmick isn't the intro though
Omg yes. It absolutely kills. And no James Jamerson?
Phil Lynott - Dancing in the moonlight
Herbie Flowers- Walk on the wild side
Roger Waters - Money
Phil Porter
Also Waiting for an Alibi. Another great intro from Phil.
Yes, yes, yes, and yes!
I agree about Walk on the Wild Side. Give me atmospheric simplicity any day instead of grandiose showmanship.
@@credenza1 Problem with WOTWS is that it's actually TWO basslines - standup bass sliding down on the root note, electric sliding up on the third. . That's cheating!
Definitely agree on Walk on the Wild Side but also the Temptations Papa Was A Rolling Stone. Doesn’t get more iconic then that
Theme song to Barney Miller
This was a sitcom on American TV from 75 to 82
Just an awesome bass intro and overall bass line
I use it constantly for sound checks. ("Ok bass man. Lemme here you")
Ha! I was just playing this the other day. So hip! I just looked it up on Wiki, and the bass line was IMPROVISED by studio musician Chuck Berghofer. Wow, just wow!
"Spirit Crusher" from Death's album "The sound of perseverance" is one of the most iconic intros too.
Black Sabbath - N.I.B.
Metallica - Orion
Tool - Forty Six and 2 or Schism
The Pot by tool as well
Orion's intro is pretty lackluster when it comes to bass imo
Christian Cruz Uh, the intro chords are bass. The first instrument heard is literally bass.
@@Kikaimetsu r/whooshhh
all 3 of those will get you demonetized on yt. per Rick Beato. and he would know.
Level 42's Love Games. Totally recognizable, totally British, an 80s/90s music shop brain ache!!
slacker42uk - that should’ve been #1
How 'bout a little Taste of Honey, Boogie Oogie Oogie? Everyone breaks out their air bass for this one.
Absolutely.
I’m shocked that schism or 46 and 2 by tool isn’t featured
There's always room for improvement. That's what you get when you can only pick 10 songs.
Super Cock schism is my favorite bass line and Fieldy my favorite bassist
Or The Pot...
I believe Forty six and 2 doesn’t exactly have a bass intro. It opens with the main bass riff but that’s not necessarily and introduction.
Overrated shite that’s why 😉
“Jungle Boogie” by Kool and the Gang. One of my favorite disco/funk bass lines.
I never thought I'd see Scott dog paddling, but Hysteria is a beast.
Megadeath: Dave Ellefson's bass line in Peace Sells.
Yes, indeed. They used it on MTV years ago.
Rage Against the Machine's first album had Bullet in the Head!
Take the Power Back is great, but the iconic bass intro on that album is definitely BitH.
Dazed and confused Led Zeppelin. Simple, but effective as heck! Sets the tone for the song.
It was not their song, they did not write the music to it. Plant changed the original lyrics some but that’s it.
The real me -John entwistle
Badge- jack bruce
Ryan Perron Yeah how the fuck did he forget those two. That and fucking NIB
@@pat8437 Yes, The REAL ME, HELLO!!!!!!!
Yes! Absolutely! The Real Me!!
Tool 46 & 2 for sure is one of the best bass lines ever, and one that I've found very hard to play. Im not too good with a pick. Justin is really underrated as a bassist imo.
Damn near anything Geddy played, but specifically YYZ and Tom Sawyer.
Another great video Scott. I'd like you to consider (my favourite bassist), Matt Freeman (Rancid). He wrote so many killer riffs, think he would deserve to be featured. Keep up the good work mate!
Tool - Schism. Definitely an iconic intro.
That's iconic but not the best
@@FireGrizzlyy to me it's definitely one of the most memorable bass intros of the last thirty years, and I'm not even a huge Tool fan
@@ptose i admit that. There are more than 10 best intro in the world, and to put it into 1 video is so difficult. And btw it's also subjective. There's no certain rule for you to follow in order to be labeled as the best. It's up to the listener, your list might be different but at the end of the day we just want to appreciate music
Lets face it, Justin Chancelor could have populated the list on his own.
@@ptose I agree, having Sweet Emotion (for example) on the list and not Schism is a crime.
One of these nights by Eagles is such a great bass intro.
Now you mention it... Not a fan but a great intro.
@@russ6697
Not a fan??? Of the Eagles???
Less headphone time with metal rock music, please.
@@gottalottarugs Not for me I'm afraid. I like a couple of songs though.
Solid list. For Hysteria in recording I reckon he would have been using one of his Pedulla Rapture basses from around that era, he didn’t start issuing status basses until 2009.
Here are two you might have considered...
"Heart of the Sunrise" by YES. - played by Chris Squire
"I'm a Man" by Chicago - played by Peter Cetera
Heart of the sunrise should SOOOOOO be on the top basslines of all time list (Universe Edition)
Heart of the sunrise is the best music gets for me!
I was just reminded today of one of my favorite trax ever - Self Esteem by the Offspring. Right from the start, Greg K.lays down the whole meaning, all the emotions of the song.
Another one, of course, is 'Strawberry Letter 23' by T-T.
for me #1 is PINO on Paul Youngs "Wherever I lay my hat"... but he is my No1 in general... ✌
Konrad Fichtner was about to write that!
It’s not exactly something we ever hear on the radio, but the theme from Barney Miller has one of the greatest bass intros in the history of music period.
Green Day's "When I Come Around" is another great one!
i feel like she, longview, and welcome to paradise have better basslines, but yeah mike dirnt is great
Yes - Heart of the Sunrise.
and Every Rush song ever
Loudbottom totally agree
It took a while to find this comment
Does it really happen? is quite nice too
School Days by Stanley Clarke!
Oh gahd yes.
Jeff Beck solo for it is awesome.
@@coffinman5007 Jeff beck doesn't play on School days its Raymond Gomez.
@@patbassman8251 Yes I had it wrong for 40 years!
Could be the best lead solo I ever heard:
Maybe.
czcams.com/video/WfC7Bezmd5s/video.html
“Brick House” by The Commodores
Dude, the greatest bass intro of all time is from My Girl. Simplicity at its finest and everyone instantly recognizes it.
Flea. That riff is off of Breadfan from Budgie and later covered by Metallica.
Ytsebri thought of that right away
It's similar but breadfan pedals the hammer on section twice as long as does a different run down and it's singular
Bingo!!!!
Yep, not a straight copy but you can hear the influence, assuming he's heard of Budgie.
Jane’s Addiction - Three Days - album - Ritual De Lo Habitual from 1990
Love it, simple but it inspired me to pick up a bass.
One of my favorites as well
O, same…
Scott, I'm a professional keyboardist, not a bassist... bass is my 2nd instrument that I don't gig with. I thought the "Come Together" bassline was played on an open D string that continues to ring, WHILE sliding up from F on the A string, and then crossing over to the F on the G string, then D on the 12th fret. I could just swear that the D string rings throughout the slide! But hearing the isolated track, it definitely begins with the fretted D, as you played it. Wow, that's a revelation to me!
In other news: the intro to "One of These Nights" by The Eagles is one of my all-time favorite bass intros! Really takes me back...
Dancing in the Moonlight - Thin Lizzy
Sunshine of your Love- Cream
I Wanna Be Adored- Stone Roses
Dancing in the moonlight was by King Harvest, not thin lizzy.
Kyle Motty czcams.com/video/gTONQNWeGZo/video.html
@@kylemotty5951 They are rdifferent songs. The King Harvest one is the song Toploader covered.
@@CJM8615 I stand corrected. Excuse the ignorance.
Rancid - Journey to the end of the east bay has quite awesome bass intro
Obviously, first one on the metal side should be Billy Sheehan and Mr. Bug's debut "Addicted to that rush"
Other great examples are:
David Ellefson and Megadeth's "Peace sells"
Steve Harris and Iron Maiden's "Clairvoyant"
John Myung and Dream Theater's "Lifting shadows off a dream"
Justin Chancellor and Tool's "46 and 2" (or maybe "Schism")
And my personal favourite, of course, Christian Giesler and Kreator's "Voices of the dead"
And we are not even stepping into the extreme zone, which has fantastic bass players as well.
Ace of Spades. Simple to play but so full of attitude that it is timeless.
Level 42 - Mark King - Love Games, Heathrow, Kansas City Milkman, Hot Water...
"Love Games"...No doubt...But the intro is sequenced.
So you like Mark King?? 😀
Jackson 5, Winton Fielder "I want you back"
Robert Box
Not really an intro though is it
Also has guitar and piano with it...
Ball of confusion by the Temptaions. I believe it was James Jamerson
I stand corrected it was Bob Babbit on Ball of Confusion.
@@halcop While there's no doubt that is a great bass line, my favorite from Bob (correction: favorite period) is Inner City Blues.
Theme Song to the TV Series "Barney Miller"
wayn3w - and that was james jamerson doing that
Chuck Berghofer was the bass player. He also play the upright bass on Nancy Sinatra’s these boots were made for walking
Thank you Scott! I’m really happy with this video, top notch!
Scott - I'd love to see a full tutorial on Hysteria. It's a monster of a bass part!
10 is not enough! Do a part 2! Amazing bass lines btw
Tony Levin's intro on "Sleepless" by King Crimson is a glaring omission.
King Crimson never gets the love and recognition they deserve
Watching this and seeing that you play the intro from "Around the world" makes me happy 😊
Get some Primus love!
Primus Suck
joel loughner he couldn’t handle it
It's not his fault we can't blame him for not being able to play a gods bass lines
theres a surprising lack of les claypool mentions on this channel at all i think its just maybe not scotts style?
@@beepboop974 I think it's because Claypools not so theoretical approach to music.
I think for Around The World Flea was using his Modulus
I agree on that :)
You’re right from my memory. He used the modulus on a lot of stuff from 90s onward.
unamericano well he actually used his musicman stingray in 95 on One Hot Minute but yea, in 99 when californication came out he switched to modulus cuz he had a signature bass with them
Bruce Foxton playing “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight”. Bruce is probably one of the best bass players out there. Much underrated.
Good shout. I'd been thinking "Town Called Malice" as well.
Thorazine Shuffle by Gov't Mule with Allen Woody on bass. They released their first album about the same time I started playing bass, so he had a huge influence on me.
Just Marcus’ slide on Never Too Much.
Also I’d have put The Chillis version of Higher Ground in there. That and Domination by Symphony X
I was made to love her Stevie wonder bassist James Jameson
yes indeed. amazing
Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing (Marvin Gay & Tami Terrelle) another Jamerson bassline
That bass line for Flea's 'Around the World', reminds me of the riff for Budgie's 'Breadfan'!!
Cool man! While watching, I was thinking Bernard Edwards - "Everybody Dance" just before you had him on your list. Stanley Clarke "School Days" and Marcus Miller should at least be mentioned. Janice Marie Johnson playing bass on "Boogie Oogie Oogie" from the band A Taste of Honey.
Never too much was Marcus Miller... maybe it was too short
I expected something like "Come on Come over"
A glaring omission is Roundabout by Yes - iconic intro which sets the tone for the entire song.
The intro is the acoustic guitar. When the bass kicks in the track has already started.
Does it really happen is my favorite Yes bass intro
Beautiful sound and bass ! Love it !
"Live With Me" is my fave. Birdland is hard to ignore too.
Well things have changed since my day.. the idea of a list such as this without Stanley Clarke´s ¨Schooldays¨or ¨Birdland¨ would be unthinkable..
I also object to a list for ¨low-enders¨with so many entries that have basically turned their bass into a distorted guitar, with no thump in sight haha
I agree. The distorted guitar sound has nothing to do with bass as I understand it.
the billie jean line puzzled me for years....it never sounded right....i tried the low f# and i tried the high f#......it never occurred to me that was both at the same time....
thanks scott!
Awesome selection!
In my opinion, I would not forget to add one of my favorite bass intros of all time, which is from weak and powerless by A perfect Circle
A few you didn't mention Scott: "Mudshovel" by stained, "Jet City Woman" and "Della Brown" by Queensrych (none difficult, but all memorable) and "Turn the Page" by Rush. (That's a toughie!)
Love your videos! Thanks for all your hard work. Cheers!
Great video. And a good list! Weirdly for me when I think of bass intros, the only one for me you missed was Peaches by the Stranglers.
The lack of Steve Harris is criminal
He can't play it 😂
Tragic!!!
Study bass players dont like Harris?! Up the irons!
Up the Irons.
I agree. I'm dying here.
Chris Squire on Roundabout or Heart of the Sunrise.
Roundabout? There is no bass in the intro of Roundabout.
Definitely Heart of the Sunrise, it just throws you right into the song and shows a lot of skill. One of my favorite songs, and it definitely got me started on the bass. Chris Squire rocks!
I saw Aerosmith some time after their Run DMC resurrection, and our seats absolutely sucked. Upper level, behind the stage. I thought, oh great, we get to watch these guy’s backsides the whole show. Then, out of nowhere, Tom Hamilton to the rescue. He turned around and faced all of us in the cheap seats and laid that Sweet Emotion intro down. We all got up and started grooving in serious fashion.
This list misses N.I.B. by Black Sabbath IMHO
That Immo
I totally agree.😉
You can't leave out NIB if you are gonna get some rockbass intros on the list, Geezer was possibly the first one to add a wah on a bass and made bass more relevant in the rock/metal-genre over all in my opinion.
yes you can. it's just pentatonic fiddling. nothing unique
@@biologicalstepdad9082 but isn't that what literally the #2 bassline was?
You could (and I will) argue that Hand of Doom is even better. That tone is the definition of doom. (But they could've been 1 and 2).
Paul Chambers Double bass intro on Miles Davis' "So What"
Thank you
Ron Carter
Chameleon by Herbie Hancock. Thanks for the entertainment- I‘m glad you did mention So What at the end.
Sir absolute brilliance! Love the show!
Love your videos bud and you're a Leeds boy same as me LOL but no Jamiroquai? Weather Report?
Pink Floyd - " Money "
@@Rok_Piletic He put Money in his honorable mentions, but I agree it belongs in the top 10. Most iconic bass intro I can think of.
Kind of surprised Rio wasn't even mentioned in the end. Too much glam?
Whenever I see any video entitled "Top x of all time", I just know it's going to be a nonsense-fest of self-indulgent twattery on a scale that only a musician can attain.
Well, it starts with keyboard and drums AND bass so I guess it doesn't count
See, don't need no six string bass to be great . I understand expanding / experimenting with different sounds.
Appreciate your time and effort, and as well as your knowledge you impart. Thank you!
Am I the only one who heard the intro of "RHCP - Around the world" and immediately thought about the intro of "Budgie - Breadfan"?
Totally. I always associate it w the Metallica version though.
American life... anybody. No? Ok I'll go.
Yes! That track got me playing bass
Tuuuunnnnnnneeeeee
Yessss
AMAZING song and intro.
Primus sucks
Artist - Fugazi, song - "Waiting Room", bassist - Joe Lally
Fugazi fan!! Repeater.. all the instrument album is brilliant.
During the early '00s I remember Chris from MUSE using a Candy Tangerine Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass with maple fingerboard and the same one with a rosewood fingerboard, I guess that what he used on the album.
I'm a Man - Peter Cetera of Chicago, My Girl - James Jamerson, Temptations (though its a Duet with Robert White on guitar)
Chris Squire, Yes, Does it really happen? Drama. Killer intro. Killer outro.
John Entwistle, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee. Anything by any of these.
As long as there is none of Geddy's singing
@@user-of3vr7je4n Geddy is an amazing singer.
