  • #thinklikeahorse #ItIsNeverTheHorsesFault I am often asked why don't horses in the wild need trims and horseshoes, I try and answer that question. The reasons are varied and complex but most horse questions are, but people want the fast and easy way and then wonder why it does not work.
    Horsemanship, horse training, horse care IS A PROCESS NOT AN EVENT.

    I know this is about feet, but for people who don't believe in letting their horses out 24/7, I have to share a story of my mare.... I have always kept my horses outdoors 24/7... And last September I got a new mare who was a chronic and severe cribber, a severe weaver, had ulcers and was underweight from being so stressed out. This poor mare had spent most of her life locked up in a stall before she came to live with my guys...
    In 6 months of being kept outside 24/7 in a herd environment I have seen dramatic changes and improvements.. The cribbing behaviour is almost gone. She put on about 300 lbs over the winter. She is ulcer free as well. So I must say i have witnessed first hand the benefits a horse gets from being allowed to behave in a natural way and be outdoors 24/7 with other horses.

    The hoof will naturally flex with every step, activating blood flow mechanisms within. A metal shoe will keep the hoof from flexing, and reduces blood flow. There exist a thermal image of a horse's front legs, to compare shod and barefoot body temperature of the hoof.
    If a horse must work long hours on hard surfaces (example: mounted police), there exist flexible boots a horse can wear, and removed for rest hours.
    Hooves become tougher when allowed to remain barefoot, but will still wear fast on asphalt.

    It's the same with dogs. It breaks my heart knowing there are dogs out there who never get walked, who live their lives locked up in a house. My mom will sometimes not take the dog out for a day or two (when I'm out of the house) and I try to explain to her that dogs don't have the internet or video games or entertainment like humans do. They just lay around all day, bored and without a purpose. It's cruel not to take them out.

    • @littlesugarbug180
      @littlesugarbug180 Před 7 lety +46

      You can't really put dogs and horses on the same plan because one is a predator and one is prey. Some dogs do not mind being couch potatoes, and I'm pretty sure they could care less if they're being walked or not. Now, if a dog is misbehaving because it's "bored" then that's a different story.

      Little Sugarbug A dog may _like_ staying inside and lie around all day, but that's not very optimal for health. More dogs are obese than not nowadays.

      @littlesugarbug180 Před 7 lety +7

      I agree that more dogs these days are obese (it makes many people tell me that my dogs are too skinny), but part of that I think also has to do with diet. I rarely give my dogs treats or vegetable and fruit scrapes of any kind. The only time they get food is during training, and during the "meal times" when I don't have time to train. But I've found that people who spoil their dogs with doggie treats and table-food are the ones whose dogs are a little on the chubby side.

      I have a german working line Belgian Malinois and his line gets big. 100lbs or so. He is the hardest healthy dog to put weight on that I've ever known. To the point I had to go to free-feeding him which, with any other dog, I'm vehemently against. Until him I've never used free-feeding and I've had dogs all my life. Right after I got Tango, our landlord's 6 year old Rottweiler died. This dog was massively overweight. I had actually never seen a Rotti so heavy nor do I wish to anytime soon. He could barely walk and, because our landlord owned a camp next to the aparment, everyone would give him food but never understand everyone else at the camp was doing it too. Most of my dogs may have been a couple pounds over ideal but never so much so that they couldn't move properly and freely without difficulty. Even my 17 year old, 80lb husky/shepherd mix still acted like a puppy because her arthritis pain wasn't exacerbated by extra weight. I feel soort for dogs who look like skeleton s but I feel equally bad about dogs who are obese.

    Couldn't agree more! I read about how horse physiology experts did research on the effects of shoes. It's been thoroughly proven that a shod horse going at a walk over pavement has at least 3X the concussive impact of a barefoot horse going at a trot. Afterwards they did a thermal imaging scan after giving it a good workout. The barefoot legs were fully red with blood circulation, but the shod leg was blue!
    I've had my mare for going on 6 years now and she's never had shoes on since the day I owned her. She lives in our backyard barn and we do trail rides in the country. Walking through fields, trotting alongside/down paved backroads, and we used to ride to town once a month with my mom when she owned a horse, also no shoes.

      Very true. But I wouldn't want to trust a horse while trotting or loping to have his head lower to his knees. (nose just at the top of where the knees begin) We've all seen them in the show rings doing this, its just not a natural gait for a horse. In my experience when a horse lowers his head, he is about to crow hop or buck you right off. I used to love rip Patrick Swayze, but after seeing his trainers train his Arabians to keep their heads down, not so much. Using cement blocks tied their heads down to the ground. He sold his property close to me in Magnolia now called High Meadow Ranch years before he passed away.

    I've always found (in fifty years of experience) that what this gentleman is saying is absolutely true. If you are using the horse as a hack taking it out daily, with a bit of time on the road or harder surface, all you really need to do is check daily for stones or anything that could bruise the frog or sole of the foot and if this isn't enough, I've always found that a bit of filing by yourself (as long as you know what you are doing!) is much less traumatic than a visit from the Farrier (who in our case is a horrible little man, but he's the only one in the area! He's sadistic if you don't keep your eye on him all the time too!). I would definitely listen to this video as it's not rocket science, just horse sense!

The reasoning behind this makes perfect sense. These animals used to run wild. They helped build the modern world. I’m glad there’s people out here being vocal on their behalf.

    I'm currently fostering an abuse case QH palo ex-rodeo mare. She will NOT let a farrier anywhere near her. To be sure there was one woman farrier that did only trim work and the mare was a handful even for her. The last time she tried the mare got too dangerous to control and had to stop to protect herself. The owner wasn't happy and then tacked the mare and rode off with her to have the street finish the job. That farrier has since died and I've been able to shape the fronts with a rasp but the mare is very arthritic and getting her to allow me to lift the fores even to pick is problematic as she will object because of pain. This mare was thrown and hogtied by other farriers in the past and to even try to touch her hinds requires a Tony Stark MK46 suit. It's been 15 months and I have gained a lit of her trust to the point that through love, soft hands, and a gentle voice I have teased to the surface the sweetness that she had hid down deep for over 20+ years. You read correctly: 20+.
    This mare has had at least 5 owners. I'm willing to bet that her first was the one who foaled her out. Her problems began at weaning and being sold. From then it went down hill fast. 2nd owner green broke and since she's a Texas horse probably none to gently. 3rd owner competed in the rodeo circuit. Mare has a nice gouge scar in the butt from a steer. #3 ran out of luck and money at the Davie Fl rodeo and sold her to a latino who also are not known for gentle handling. Somewhere between owner 2 and 5 the mare acquired a scar that runs diagonally from upper left to lower right across the tongue. A bicycle chain bit perhaps? The current owner #5 has had her the longest about 10 years and has been a recovering alcoholic for about 3 months. Until that time #5 treatment of the mare has been less than stellar as you can imagine. I've taken on the daily care of this mare and my description her is fear reactive. Constantly on alert for any threat. A bomb with a smoldering lit short fuse. Under my care a lot has changed. People cannot believe it's the same mare that once tried to kick them to the moon. I've gained a lot of her trust and have calmed her down considerably, but I must be careful. My hope is to get her away from where she is currently stabled so her past wains with the absence of her #5 owner who has said will give me the horse free and clear when she leaves to move. If it happens great. If not I'm giving the mare a soft place to fall. That way she focuses only on me.

    What? Where I'm from it's considered weird to keep the horses in all the time - only like a rich sports stable would do that. Everyone else keeps the horses outside at least when the sun is out. In the stable I ride at, we even started to keep them outside during the night a few years back. We just put them in a smaller safer inner pasture/riding rectangle for the night. It's actually cheaper for us and it's less work - fewer boxes to clean. We only keep some older and privately owned horses in for the night because it's safer for them. We only put all the horses in if there is really bad weather.

    after watching your videos I feel like I understand horses more, I've never thought about the damage horse shoes would do before but it all makes sense that they should damage their feet, I've always preferred to see a horse as it is; no rug, no shoes, no stupid processed food or tack, just the bare animal living the way it should. So after these videos, I now can't STAND people who do blogs on here who keep their horses in barns, train horses and ride their horses ignorantly whilst claiming to know what theyre doing (they're also young women who likely have never worked a hard day in their life, people who own whips despite knowing how they hurt) and there's just so many people who think they understand but are so set in their ways, so unwilling to change, because they're not up to it or the horse is "too old to learn" I think it's such bullshit and i CAN'T STAND IT. especially when rescues do this. EUGH. there's a video on here of these unexperienced lil girls buying a horse from a sale to "rescue it* one horse out of hundreds and when they're done THEY SELL IT TO A LITTLE GIRL WHO WILL INEVITABLY SELL IT ON AND START THE PROCESS AGAIN they're thinking they're helping but making it worse. And I wouldn't have realised that if not for your videos. There's so many selfish horse people it makes me sick, for the same reason I don't want to own a horse, but I do want to help horses have a better life with humans because let's face it (most of them are forced to). I'd love to have a controlled herd living all naturally but also with people, no riders, no nothing just living life the way they should on an all natural diet, no grain or crap like that.

    Fun fact humans do not need shoes as well, we just started wearing them first in the form of sandals and it got narrower and narrower and now most modern people have crooked feet and a very soft foot sole that cannot handle hot/spiky/rougher terrains like it’s supposed to do. Some people battle this by practicing running barefoot and after only months of freedom the foot regains some of its original wider form and your toes become stronger

      humans are supposed to be barefoot running 60-100km a day or two in the wild. we are built to outrun any animal to death. that said, now that so many of us wear shoes, we have so many problems with our feet, our shins, our Achilles, etc. this doesnt happen when you stop wearing your shoes because your foot becomes like its own shoe the more you use it. your running form naturally improves so that your whole body works together to make the pressure from running as minimal and painless as possible. if you really need shoes because of a harsh floor you should get zero drop barefoot shoes. otherwise, just let loose

    If your horse needs shoes due to the wear exceeding the growth due to work, use what are essentially horse sneakers. Put them on when they need to work and take them off when they're done. The best part is that they can be used over and over again and they do not restrict blood flow to the entire leg unlike traditional horse shoes that are nailed to the horses hooves.

I agree with you and all of your followers here about going all natural! I adopted my girl last February, and she does have front shoes on due to founder and white line (before I got her) but I am going to try and go shoeless here as soon as I can. I hate shoes! Here front hooves are always so packed with sh&7 and everything. I have her boarded right now (actively looking for property now to keep her and my friend’s horse on our own property), and the owner keeps everything as clean as possible. They are on 24/7 turnout unless extreme weather. When I move, they will have access to either their stalls or a run-in should they choose. Love, love loved this video and all of the comments!!
